Analysis of the Fugl-Meyer outcome measures assessing the effectiveness of robot-mediated stroke therapy

Robot-mediated therapies offer a new approach to neurorehabilitation. This paper analyses the Fugl-Meyer data from the Gentle/S project and finds that the two intervention phases (sling suspension and robot mediated therapy) have approximately equal value to the further recovery of chronic stroke subjects (on average 27 months post stroke). Both sling suspension and robot mediated interventions show a recovery over baseline and further work is needed to establish the common factors in treatment, and to establish intervention protocols for each that will give individual subjects a maximum level of recovery.

Multivariate analysis of the Fugl-Meyer outcome measures assessing the effectiveness of GENTLE/S robot-mediated stroke therapy

Background: Robot-mediated therapies offer entirely new approaches to neurorehabilitation. In this paper we present the results obtained from trialling the GENTLE/S neurorehabilitation system assessed using the upper limb section of the Fugl-Meyer ( FM) outcome measure. Methods: We demonstrate the design of our clinical trial and its results analysed using a novel statistical approach based on a multivariate analytical model. This paper provides the rational for using multivariate models in robot-mediated clinical trials and draws conclusions from the clinical data gathered during the GENTLE/S study. Results: The FM outcome measures recorded during the baseline ( 8 sessions), robot-mediated therapy ( 9 sessions) and sling-suspension ( 9 sessions) was analysed using a multiple regression model. The results indicate positive but modest recovery trends favouring both interventions used in GENTLE/S clinical trial. The modest recovery shown occurred at a time late after stroke when changes are not clinically anticipated. Conclusion: This study has applied a new method for analysing clinical data obtained from rehabilitation robotics studies. While the data obtained during the clinical trial is of multivariate nature, having multipoint and progressive nature, the multiple regression model used showed great potential for drawing conclusions from this study. An important conclusion to draw from this paper is that this study has shown that the intervention and control phase both caused changes over a period of 9 sessions in comparison to the baseline. This might indicate that use of new challenging and motivational therapies can influence the outcome of therapies at a point when clinical changes are not expected. Further work is required to investigate the effects arising from early intervention, longer exposure and intensity of the therapies. Finally, more function-oriented robot-mediated therapies or sling-suspension therapies are needed to clarify the effects resulting from each intervention for stroke recovery.

On a Gromoll-Meyer type theorem in globally hyperbolic stationary spacetimes

Following the lines of the celebrated Riemannian result of Gromoll and Meyer, we use infinite dimensional equivariant Morse theory to establish the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct closed geodesics in a class of globally hyperbolic stationary Lorentzian manifolds.

Patrimônio em prosa e verso: a correspondência de Rodrigo Melo Franco de Andrade para Augusto Meyer

A presente dissertação se propõe a resgatar a participação de Augusto Meyer nas primeiras iniciativas de proteção ao patrimônio cultural do Rio Grande do Sul, entre os anos de 1937 e 1938, por meio da análise da correspondência a ele enviada pelo então diretor do Serviço do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional - SPHAN, Rodrigo Melo Franco de Andrade. A referida correspondência integra o arquivo privado pessoal de Augusto Meyer que se encontra sob a guarda do Arquivo-Museu de Literatura Brasileira - AMLB, da Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa-FCRB. O trabalho em questão parte do pressuposto de que os arquivos privados pessoais se constituem em importante fonte documental para a pesquisa histórica. Como produto final apresentamos a edição anotada das cartas e telegramas dirigidas a Meyer, acompanhados de um índice geral.

Estudo comparativo dos efeitos do extrato de Ginkgo biloba L. e Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer na reprodução de ratos machos e fêmeas Wistar

Ensaios sobre a metodologia do estudo da influência de três herbicidas em Spirodela punctata (G.F.W. Meyer) Thompson (Lemnaceae)

O presente trabalho visa conhecer a taxa de multiplicação e o índice de mortalidade de S. punctata a diversas concentrações do butaclora, propanila e glifosato bem como comparar dois métodos diferentes de investigações (ensaio 1 e 2). Os dados indicaram que no ensaio 1 as concentrações foram pouco tóxicas provocando baixos índices de mortalidade embora tenha ocorrido inibição do crescimento nas concentrações mais fortes. O ensaio 2 mostrou que a butaclora e a propanila são mais tóxicas que o glifosato, com valores de mortalidade de 100% em apenas 48 horas. A taxa de multiplicação, neste ensaio, somente foi determinada para o glifosato, pois os demais herbicidas foram altamente tóxicos para a espécie. Verificou-se, na comparação dos dois métodos diferentes, que os recipientes utilizados no ensaio 2 foram mais adequados ao cultivo da espécie e que os efeitos tóxicos devem ser observados em frondes consideradas individualmente e não em plantas inteiras.

A poesia a dois passos (sobre os Anagramas, Ferdinand de Saussure)

Propomos neste trabalho uma análise dos Cadernos de Anagramas, de Ferdinand de Saussure, estabelecendo um contraponto entre o tipo de abordagem usado pelo autor em seu estudo sobre a poesia latina e a concepção do método sincrónico de análise surgida de seu Curso de lingüística geral. As dificuldades na constituição das hipóteses e na organização metodológica do texto dos Anagramas revelam uma angustiante reflexão sobre a natureza da língua, e da lingua poética de maneira especial. Como atividade contemporânea à do Curso, o reconhecimento dessas perplexidades pode ser colocado em paralelo com a tentativa de resguardo da transcendência da lingua enquanto sistema de valores, apontando para a necessidade de se pensar as tensões constitutivas do saber.

Effect of plant regulators on growth and flowering of 'Meyer' zoysiagrass

This trial aimed to evaluate the effect of sequential applications of different plant regulators over growth and flower rachis emission of 'Meyer' zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica). The study was conducted on 15-month old green turfgrass under a randomized complete block design with four replications. The following plant regulator and doses were tested: trinexapac-ethyl (113+113, 226+113, 226+226, 452+113, 452+226, 452+452, 678+339 e 904+452 g a.i./ha-1), prohexadione-calcium (100+100 e 200+200 g a.i. ha-1) and bispyribac-sodium (40+40 e 60+60 g a.i. ha-1), as well as an untreated control. The turfgrass was mowed again at 3.0 cm aboveground and the second plant regulator was applied when 'Meyer' zoysiagrass was between 5.0 and 6.0 cm high. The effect of the treatments was visually rated for visual injury, plant height, height and number of flower rachis, and total dry mass production of clippings. Only bispyribac-sodium had visual symptoms of injury on 'Meyer' zoysiagrass, and no intoxication was observed at 28 days after the second application (DAAB). The sequential applications of trinexapac-ethyl, prohexadione-calcium and bispyribac-sodium reduced by more than 80% the total clipping dry mass produced by 'Meyer' zoysiagrass. All the plant regulators tested also showed promising results in reducing the height and emission of rachis, especially when trinexapac-ethyl was applied at the doses 452+452, 678+339 and 904+452 g a.i. ha-1. 'Meyer' zoysiagrass turfgrass can be handled with the sequential application of a plant regulator, which reduces the need for mowing over a period up to 110 days after the application of the second plant regulator, and it also avoids deleterious visual effects over turfgrass.

Leituras de Grande Sertão Veredas: sua tradução alemã e a correspondência de Guimarães Rosa com seu tradutor alemão Curt Meyer-Clason

The present article gets organized around two main axles. The first one briefly presents a discussion of aspects related to the study of epistolary documents as research source and discusses some issues of the correspondence exchanged between João Guimarães Rosa and his German translator Curt Meyer-Clason. In the sequence, elements are presented that, on basis of an analysis of published and unpublished letters, lead one to the consideration of work points and author’s poiësis aspects not yet openly considered by the specialized criticism on him.
