Limitations on the open-circuit voltage of p-ZnTe/n-ZnSe heterojunction solar cells are studied via current-voltage (I-V) measurements under solar concentration and at variable temperature. The open-circuit voltage reaches a maximum value of 1.95 V at 77 K and 199 suns. The open-circuit voltage shows good agreement with the calculated built-in potential of 2.00 V at 77 K. These results suggest that the open-circuit voltage is limited by heterojunction band offsets associated with the type-II heterojunction band lineup, rather than the bandgap energy of the ZnTe absorber material.

At the present time there is a high pressure toward the improvement of all the production processes. Those improvements can be sensed in several directions in particular those that involve energy efficiency. The definition of tight energy efficiency improvement policies is transversal to several operational areas ranging from industry to public services. As can be expected, agricultural processes are not immune to this tendency. This statement takes more severe contours when dealing with indoor productions where it is required to artificially control the climate inside the building or a partial growing zone. Regarding the latter, this paper presents an innovative system that improves energy efficiency of a trees growing platform. This new system requires the control of both a water pump and a gas heating system based on information provided by an array of sensors. In order to do this, a multi-input, multi-output regulator was implemented by means of a Fuzzy logic control strategy. Presented results show that it is possible to simultaneously keep track of the desired growing temperature set-point while maintaining actuators stress within an acceptable range.

OBJECTIVE High altitude-related hypoxia induces pulmonary vasoconstriction. In Fontan patients without a contractile subpulmonary ventricle, an increase in pulmonary artery pressure is expected to decrease circulatory output and reduce exercise capacity. This study investigates the direct effects of short-term high altitude exposure on pulmonary blood flow (PBF) and exercise capacity in Fontan patients. METHODS 16 adult Fontan patients (mean age 28±7 years, 56% female) and 14 matched controls underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing with measurement of PBF with a gas rebreathing system at 540 m (low altitude) and at 3454 m (high altitude) within 12 weeks. RESULTS PBF at rest and at exercise was higher in controls than in Fontan patients, both at low and high altitude. PBF increased twofold in Fontan patients and 2.8-fold in the control group during submaximal exercise, with no significant difference between low and high altitude (p=0.290). A reduction in peak oxygen uptake at high compared with low altitude was observed in Fontan patients (22.8±5.1 and 20.5±3.8 mL/min/kg, p<0.001) and the control group (35.0±7.4 and 29.1±6.5 mL/min/kg, p<0.001). The reduction in exercise capacity was less pronounced in Fontan patients compared with controls (9±12% vs 17±8%, p=0.005). No major adverse clinical event was observed. CONCLUSIONS Short-term high altitude exposure has no negative impact on PBF and exercise capacity in Fontan patients when compared with controls, and was clinically well tolerated. An innovative method for modelling biological processes under anaerobic conditions is presented and discussed. The method is based on titrimetric and off-gas measurements. Titrimetric data is recorded as the addition rate of hydroxyl ions or protons that is required to maintain pH in a bioreactor at a constant level. An off-gas analysis arrangement measures, among other things, the transfer rate of carbon dioxide. The integration of these signals results in a continuous signal which is solely related to the biological reactions. When coupled with a mathematical model of the biological reactions, the signal allows a detailed characterisation of these reactions, which would otherwise be difficult to achieve. Two applications of the method to the enhanced biological phosphorus removal processes are presented and discussed to demonstrate the principle and effectiveness of the method.

Particle breakage is an essential part of mineral processing. The aim is to reduce run of mine mineral ore to an optimal size for liberating target minerals and for subsequent recovery by separation processes such as flotation. This size reduction is typically accomplished in a series of stages in a grinding circuit tailored to the properties of the particular mine ore. Commonly this involves two or more classes of equipment starting with crushers, followed by SAG mills and then sometimes ball mills. Occasionally, high pressure grinding rolls or other novel devices are substituted. Broadly, energy consumption increases and energy efficiency decreases with the fineness of the material produced by each piece of equipment.

We demonstrate an end-to-end computational model of the HEG shock tunnel as a way to extract more precise test flow conditions and as a way of getting predictions of new operating conditions. For a selection of established operating conditions, the L1d program was used to simulate the one-dimensional gas-dynamic processes within the whole of the facility. The program reproduces the compression tube performance reliably and, with the inclusion of a loss factor near the upstream-end of the compression tube, it provides a good estimate of the equilibrium pressure in the shock-reflection region over the set of six standard operating conditions for HEG.

Methods of analysing and optimising flotation circuits have improved significantly over the last 15 years. Mineral flotation is now generally better understood through major advances in measuring and modelling the sub-processes within the flotation system. JKSimFloat V6 is a user-friendly Windows-based software package incorporating simulation, mass balancing, and, currently under development, liberation data viewing and model fitting. This paper presents an overview of the development of the program up to its current status, and the plans established for the future. The application of the simulator, in particular, at various operations is also discussed with emphasis on the use of the program in improving flotation circuit performance.
