We obtain a new series of integral formulae for symmetric functions of curvature of a distribution of arbitrary codimension (an its orthogonal complement) given on a compact Riemannian manifold, which start from known formula by P.Walczak (1990) and generalize ones for foliations by several authors: Asimov (1978), Brito, Langevin and Rosenberg (1981), Brito and Naveira (2000), Andrzejewski and Walczak (2010), etc. Our integral formulae involve the co-nullity tensor, certain component of the curvature tensor and their products. The formulae also deal with a number of arbitrary functions depending on the scalar invariants of the co-nullity tensor. For foliated manifolds of constant curvature the obtained formulae give us the classical type formulae. For a special choice of functions our formulae reduce to ones with Newton transformations of the co-nullity tensor.

Metropolitan areas concentrate the main share of population, production and consumption in OECD countries. They are likely to be the most important units for economic, social and environmental analysis as well as for the development of policy strategies. However, one of the main problems that occur when adopting metropolitan areas as units of analysis and policy in European countries is the absence of widely accepted standards for identifying them. This severe problem appeared when we tried to perform comparative research between Spain and Italy using metropolitan areas as units of analysis. The aim of this paper is to identify metropolitan areas in Spain and Italy using similar methodologies. The results allow comparing the metropolitan realities of both countries as well as providing the metropolitan units that can be used in subsequent comparative researches. Two methodologies are proposed: the Cheshire-GEMACA methodology (FUR) and an iterative version of the USA-MSA algorithm, particularly adapted to deal with polycentric metropolitan areas (DMA). Both methods show a good approximation to the metropolitan reality and produce very similar results: 75 FUR and 67 DMA in Spain (75% of total population and employment), and 81 FUR and 86 DMA in Italy (70% of total population and employment).

In this paper I review a series of theoretical concepts that are relevant for the integrated assessment of agricultural sustainability but that are not generally included in the curriculum of the various scientific disciplines dealing with quantitative analysis of agriculture. I first illustrate with plain narratives and concrete examples that sustainability is an extremely complex issue requiring the simultaneous consideration of several aspects, which cannot be reduced into a single indicator of performance. Following, I justify this obvious need for multi-criteria analysis with theoretical concepts dealing with the epistemological predicament of complexity, starting from classic philosophical lessons to arrive to recent developments in complex system theory, in particular Rosen´s theory of modelling relation which is essential to analyze the quality of any quantitative representation. The implications of these theoretical concepts are then illustrated with applications of multi-criteria analysis to the sustainability of agriculture. I wrap up by pointing out the crucial difference between "integrated assessment" and "integrated analysis". An integrated analysis is a set of indicators and analytical models generating an analytical output. An integrated assessment is much more than that. It is about finding an effective way to deal with three key issues: (i) legitimacy – how to handle the unavoidable existence of legitimate but contrasting points of view about different meanings given by social actors to the word "development"; (ii) pertinence – how to handle in a coherent way scientific analyses referring to different scales and dimensions; and (iii) credibility – how to handle the unavoidable existence of uncertainty and genuine ignorance, when dealing with the analysis of future scenarios.

In 2006, a medico-legal consultation service devoted to adult victims of interpersonal violence was set up at the Lausanne University Hospital Centre, Switzerland: the Violence Medical Unit. Most patients are referred to the consultation by the Emergency Department. They are received by forensic nurses for support, forensic examination (in order to establish medical report) and community orientation. Between 2007 and 2009, among community violence, aggressions by security agents of nightclubs on clients have increased from 6% to 10%. Most of the victims are young men who had drunk alcohol before the assault. 25.7% presented one or several fractures, all of them in the head area. These findings raise questions about the ability of security agents of nightclubs to deal adequately with obviously risky situations and ensure client security.

Computer chips implementation technologies evolving to obtain more performance are increasing the probability of transient faults. As this probability grows and on-chip solutions are expensive or tend to degrade processor performance, the efforts to deal with these transient faults in higher levels (such as the operating system or even at the application level) are increasing. Mostly, these efforts are trying to avoid silent data corruptions using hardware, software and hybrid based techniques to add redundancy to detect the errors generated by the transient faults. This work presents our proposal to improve the robustness of applications with source code based transformation adding redundancy. Also, our proposal takes account of the tradeoff between the improved robustness and the overhead generated by the added redundancy.

Drawing on PISA data of 2006, this study examines the impact of socio-economic school composition on science test score achievement for Spanish students in compulsory secondary schools. We define school composition in terms of the average parental human capital of students in the same school. These contextual peer effects are estimated using a semi-parametric methodology, which enables the spillovers to affect all the parameters of the educational production function. We also deal with the potential problem of self-selection of student into schools, using an artificial sorting that we argue to be independent from unobserved student’s abilities. The results indicate that the association between socio-economic school composition and test score results is clearly positive and significantly higher when computed with the semi-parametric approach. However, we find that the endogenous sorting of students into schools plays a fundamental role, given that the spillovers are significantly reduced when this selection process is ruled out from our measure of school composition effects. Specifically, the estimations suggest that the contextual peer effects are moderately positive only in those schools where the socio-economic composition is considerably elevated. In addition, we find some evidence of asymmetry of how the external effects and the sorting process actually operate, which seem affect in a different way males and females as well as high and low performance students.

Recently, we were faced with a request from a student photographer who wanted to take pictures of bodies donated to our institute and used for dissection courses for medical students or for scientific purposes. Students are expressly forbidden to take pictures in the dissection hall; however, we allowed this student photographer to do her diploma work in our institute. The reason why she was proposing such a topic was that her brother died young and her parents donated his body to science. To overcome this loss of a loved one, she wanted to know what happens to the donated bodies. She followed the procedure of embalming and different dissections that took place during the summer semester and she took pictures throughout. The outcome of this work was a very nice photographic document, called 'dissection', a book with many pictures but no figure legends. The image document shows the different steps in the preparation and preservation of bodies and the work of an anatomist in the dissection hall. As we impose rules on our students, we had also to give directives in the use of the photographs taken, especially for a photographer who will use the most prominent pictures for exhibitions, i.e. that the pictures do not show names or are used for publication on the internet, or show identification numbers of cadavers, or give indication ofn the institution and are relatively anonymous. This story tells how one can deal with death and at the same time advance one's personal career. El procés de fusió de dues o més imatges de la mateixa escena en una d'única i més gran és conegut com a Image Mosaicing. Un cop finalitzat el procés de construcció d'un mosaic, els límits entre les imatges són habitualment visibles, degut a imprecisions en els registres fotomètric i geomètric. L'Image Blending és l'etapa del procediment de mosaicing a la que aquests artefactes són minimitzats o suprimits. Existeixen diverses metodologies a la literatura que tracten aquests problemes, però la majoria es troben orientades a la creació de panorames terrestres, imatges artístiques d'alta resolució o altres aplicacions a les quals el posicionament de la càmera o l'adquisició de les imatges no són etapes rellevants. El treball amb imatges subaquàtiques presenta desafiaments importants, degut a la presència d'scattering (reflexions de partícules en suspensió) i atenuació de la llum i a condicions físiques extremes a milers de metres de profunditat, amb control limitat dels sistemes d'adquisició i la utilització de tecnologia d'alt cost. Imatges amb il·luminació artificial similar, sense llum global com la oferta pel sol, han de ser unides sense mostrar una unió perceptible. Les imatges adquirides a gran profunditat presenten una qualitat altament depenent de la profunditat, i la seva degradació amb aquest factor és molt rellevant. El principal objectiu del treball és presentar dels principals problemes de la imatge subaquàtica, seleccionar les estratègies més adequades i tractar tota la seqüència adquisició-procesament-visualització del procés. Els resultats obtinguts demostren que la solució desenvolupada, basada en una Estratègia de Selecció de Límit Òptim, Fusió en el Domini del Gradient a les regions comunes i Emfatització Adaptativa d'Imatges amb baix nivell de detall permet obtenir uns resultats amb una alta qualitat. També s'ha proposat una estratègia, amb possibilitat d'implementació paral·lela, que permet processar mosaics de kilòmetres d'extensió amb resolució de centímetres per píxel.

El objetivo de esta investigación es aportar evidencia sobre las fuentes de las economías de aglomeración para el caso español. De todas las maneras posibles que se han tomado en la literatura para medir las economías de aglomeración, nosotros lo analizamos a partir de las decisiones de localización de las empresas manufactureras. La literatura reciente ha puesto de relieve que el análisis basado en la disyuntiva localización / urbanización (relaciones dentro de un mismo sector) no es suficiente para entender las economías de aglomeración. Sin embargo, las relaciones entre los diferentes sectores sí resultan significativas al examinar por qué las empresas que pertenecen a diferentes sectores se localizan unas al lado de las otras. Con esto en mente, intentamos explicar que relaciones entre diferentes sectores pueden explicar coaglomeración. Para ello, nos centramos en aquellas relaciones entre sectores definidos a partir de los mecanismos de aglomeración de Marshall, es decir, labor market, input sharing y knowledge spillovers. Trabajamos con el labor market pooling en la medida en que los dos sectores utilizan los mismos trabajadores (clasificación de ocupaciones). Con el segundo mecanismo de Marshall, input sharing, introducimos cómo dos sectores tienen una relación de comprador / vendedor. Por último, nos referimos a dos sectores que utilizan las mismas tecnologías en cuanto a los knowledge spillovers. Con el fin de capturar todos los efectos de los mecanismos de aglomeracion en España, en esta investigación trabajamos con dos ámbitos geográficos, los municipios y los mercados de trabajo locales. La literatura existente nunca se ha puesto de acuerdo en cual es el ámbito geográfico en el que mejor trabajan los mecanismos Marshall, por lo que hemos cubierto todas las unidades geográficas potenciales.

El projecte està associat a l'assignatura de Disseny Microelectrònic I, Troncal de 2on cicle d'Enginyeria en Electrònica a la Universitat de Barcelona. A l'actualitat aquesta assignatura incorpora tant d'estudiants de Física com d'Enginyeries Tècniques d'altres universitats. El seu enfoc és de caire formador pràctic. Temporalment l'assignatura correspon al primer quadrimestre en una carrera que a l'actualitat és només de segon cicle. Per tant correspon a un moment en el qual l'estudiant té el primer contacte amb aquest ensenyament. La introducció de nous conceptes i continguts és constant. Durant els dos anys de durada del projecte, aquest ha permès l’elaboració de material didàctic digital que ha estat incorporat satisfactòriament (ben avaluat per l’alumnat) al material didàctic i les activitats del curs. Un dels objectius principals a aconseguir amb el projecte, combatre el fracàs escolar associat a l’alt índex d’absentisme, s’assoleix amb aquest material. D’altra banda, els alumnes que opten per un seguiment continuat, seguint la metodologia activa del curs, veuen en aquest material el recolzament necessari per afrontar les activitats que se’ls plantegen. En ambdós casos i juntament amb la resta d'activitats presencials del curs, s'aconsegueix incentivar l'autoaprenentatge i motivar l’alumne de forma continuada. El material digital comprèn apunts de l'assignatura i problemes resolts de referència. Durant l’execució del projecte s’ha mesurat contínuament l’esforç de l’estudiant. Aquest era el segon principal objectiu del projecte, sense el qual una adaptació a la metodologia ECTS i a l’EEES és impossible. S'ha mesurat l'esforç que provoquen les diferents activitats, especialment aquelles activitats cooperatives que motiven més l'alumnat però que també el carreguen més. Com a eina per a l'estudiant s'ha desenvolupat un aplicatiu que permet que ell mateix conegui el seu esforç enfront de la resta d'alumnes com a mesura de la seva qualitat d'estudi.

El projecte ha d’establir xarxes per posar en contacte els diferents continguts, reflexions i recursos docents emprats per professors d’art medieval de la UB i la URV s’ha dut a terme adaptant-se a diferents conjuntures. Una modificació sorgida durant el desenvolupament del projecte deriva de la transformació que han de patir els actuals plans d’estudis enfront dels nous títols de grau. Els lligams plantejats en funció d’unes determinades assignatures s’ha vist alterat quan la seva definició i durada ha variat dins els nous plans d’estudis, en la preparació dels quals han intervingut diversos membres del projecte, tant des del Consell d’estudis com des de la Comissió promotora del grau d’història de l’art. Malgrat tot, els diferents professors hem elaborat materials específics per a la docència de les actuals assignatures, incloent un extens ventall de presentacions en PowerPoint, que abasten les distintes matèries implicades. A més de les classes i pràctiques pròpies de cada assignatura, vàrem dur a terme el cicle de conferències Imatges Indiscretes. Art i devoció a l’Edat Mitjana, per tal d’aproximar l’alumnat a la recerca desenvolupada pels membres del grup (incloent becaris i alguns invitats procedents d’altres universitats), ampliant l’oferta formativa més enllà dels formats més predeterminats. És en curs la publicació del cicle en forma de dossier docent. Si aquesta activitat s’orientava vers els continguts relatius a l’art medieval, també hem promogut una reflexió adreçada vers una problemàtica general específicament docent amb un Seminari de docència sobre a història de l’’art en el qual han participat, a més del grup, un ampli ventall de professors del Departament d’Història de l’Art de la UB, així com docents d’altres universitats i professionals vinculats a l’exercici de la disciplina. Tant el seminari com el cicle de conferències són propostes a les quals és previst donar continuïtat en futures convocatòries.

El projecte "Programa d'introducció al dret espanyol per a estudiants d'intercanvi" s'ha dut a terme a la Facultat de dret de la Universitat de Barcelona des del mes de juny de 2007 al mes de setembre de 2008. Ha consistit en iniciar l’esmentat programa que suposava, pels estudiants d’intercanvi sol·licitants, la consecució d’un Diploma d’Introducció al Dret espanyol, expedit per la Facultat de Dret de la UB, a banda del reconeixement dels crèdits cursats a Barcelona. L’objectiu va ser proposar canvis en el plantejament curricular, en concret la posada en marxa de les assignatures del Diploma: Introducció al Dret Privat, Introducció al Dret públic, Introducció al sistema processal espanyol, i Bases del sistema legal espanyol. Com a tasca prèvia que havia de garnatir l’èxit es va fer una difusió del programa a les universitats d’origen i es va articular un sistema d’acollida als estudiants que es va demostrar molt útil al principi de curs per a informacions diverses, però que després va ser infrautilitzat. Pel que fa a les assignatures, es van plantejar com un anàlisi dels trets fonamentals i diferencials del nostre dret, utilitzant elements de comparació amb els ordenaments dels països dels alumnes, però sense fer un exercici estricte de dret comparat. La taxa de rediment va ser alta – 75% - però es va detectar un problema, la insuficient preparació idomàtica, que depassa l’organització del programa. També es va considerar un repte pedagògic important: la heterogeneïtat dels estudiants tant en la seva formació jurídica prèvia –assignatures cursades en la seva Universitat-, com en relació al sistema legal del país del qual provenien, en relació al sistema espanyol. Per aquest motiu, el plantejament del curs i els materials a utilitzar va dependre en bona mesura del conjunt del grup al qual es va dirigr cada assignatura en concret.

Motivation. The study of human brain development in itsearly stage is today possible thanks to in vivo fetalmagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. Aquantitative analysis of fetal cortical surfacerepresents a new approach which can be used as a markerof the cerebral maturation (as gyration) and also forstudying central nervous system pathologies [1]. However,this quantitative approach is a major challenge forseveral reasons. First, movement of the fetus inside theamniotic cavity requires very fast MRI sequences tominimize motion artifacts, resulting in a poor spatialresolution and/or lower SNR. Second, due to the ongoingmyelination and cortical maturation, the appearance ofthe developing brain differs very much from thehomogenous tissue types found in adults. Third, due tolow resolution, fetal MR images considerably suffer ofpartial volume (PV) effect, sometimes in large areas.Today extensive efforts are made to deal with thereconstruction of high resolution 3D fetal volumes[2,3,4] to cope with intra-volume motion and low SNR.However, few studies exist related to the automatedsegmentation of MR fetal imaging. [5] and [6] work on thesegmentation of specific areas of the fetal brain such asposterior fossa, brainstem or germinal matrix. Firstattempt for automated brain tissue segmentation has beenpresented in [7] and in our previous work [8]. Bothmethods apply the Expectation-Maximization Markov RandomField (EM-MRF) framework but contrary to [7] we do notneed from any anatomical atlas prior. Data set &Methods. Prenatal MR imaging was performed with a 1-Tsystem (GE Medical Systems, Milwaukee) using single shotfast spin echo (ssFSE) sequences (TR 7000 ms, TE 180 ms,FOV 40 x 40 cm, slice thickness 5.4mm, in plane spatialresolution 1.09mm). Each fetus has 6 axial volumes(around 15 slices per volume), each of them acquired inabout 1 min. Each volume is shifted by 1 mm with respectto the previous one. Gestational age (GA) ranges from 29to 32 weeks. Mother is under sedation. Each volume ismanually segmented to extract fetal brain fromsurrounding maternal tissues. Then, in-homogeneityintensity correction is performed using [9] and linearintensity normalization is performed to have intensityvalues that range from 0 to 255. Note that due tointra-tissue variability of developing brain someintensity variability still remains. For each fetus, ahigh spatial resolution image of isotropic voxel size of1.09 mm is created applying [2] and using B-splines forthe scattered data interpolation [10] (see Fig. 1). Then,basal ganglia (BS) segmentation is performed on thissuper reconstructed volume. Active contour framework witha Level Set (LS) implementation is used. Our LS follows aslightly different formulation from well-known Chan-Vese[11] formulation. In our case, the LS evolves forcing themean of the inside of the curve to be the mean intensityof basal ganglia. Moreover, we add local spatial priorthrough a probabilistic map created by fitting anellipsoid onto the basal ganglia region. Some userinteraction is needed to set the mean intensity of BG(green dots in Fig. 2) and the initial fitting points forthe probabilistic prior map (blue points in Fig. 2). Oncebasal ganglia are removed from the image, brain tissuesegmentation is performed as described in [8]. Results.The case study presented here has 29 weeks of GA. Thehigh resolution reconstructed volume is presented in Fig.1. The steps of BG segmentation are shown in Fig. 2.Overlap in comparison with manual segmentation isquantified by the Dice similarity index (DSI) equal to0.829 (values above 0.7 are considered a very goodagreement). Such BG segmentation has been applied on 3other subjects ranging for 29 to 32 GA and the DSI hasbeen of 0.856, 0.794 and 0.785. Our segmentation of theinner (red and blue contours) and outer cortical surface(green contour) is presented in Fig. 3. Finally, torefine the results we include our WM segmentation in theFreesurfer software [12] and some manual corrections toobtain Fig.4. Discussion. Precise cortical surfaceextraction of fetal brain is needed for quantitativestudies of early human brain development. Our workcombines the well known statistical classificationframework with the active contour segmentation forcentral gray mater extraction. A main advantage of thepresented procedure for fetal brain surface extraction isthat we do not include any spatial prior coming fromanatomical atlases. The results presented here arepreliminary but promising. Our efforts are now in testingsuch approach on a wider range of gestational ages thatwe will include in the final version of this work andstudying as well its generalization to different scannersand different type of MRI sequences. We consider environments in which agents can cooperate on multiple issues and externalities are present both within and across issues. We propose a way to extend (Shapley) values that have been put forward to deal with externalities within issues to games where there are externalities within and across issues. We characterize our proposal through axioms that extend the Shapley axioms to our more general environment.

Most bird studies of female signalling have been confined to species in which females display a male-ornament in a vestigial form. However, a great deal of benefit may be gained from considering phenotypic traits that are specific to females. This is because (1) sex-specific traits may signal sex-specific qualities and (2) females may develop a male-ornament not because they are selected to do so, but because fathers transmit to daughters the underlying genes for its expression (genetic correlation between the sexes). We investigated these two propositions in the barn owl Tyto alba, a species in which male plumage is lighter in colour and less marked with black spots than that of females. Firstly, we present published evidence that female plumage spottiness reflects parasite resistance ability. We also show that male plumage coloration is correlated with reproductive success, male feeding rate and heart mass. Secondly, cross-fostering experiments demonstrate that plumage coloration and spottiness are genetically correlated between the sexes. This implies that if a given trait value is selected in one sex, the other sex will indirectly evolve towards a similar value. This prediction is supported by the observation that female plumage coloration and spottiness resembled that of males, in comparisons at the level of Tyto alba alba populations, Tyto alba subspecies and Tyto species. Our results therefore support the hypothesis that sex-specific traits signal sex-specific qualities and that a gene for a sex-specific trait can be expressed in the other sex as the consequence of a genetic correlation between the sexes.
