Assembly consisting of cast and wrought aluminum alloys has wide spread application in defense and aero space industries. For the efficacious use of the transition joints, the weld should have adequate strength and formability. In the present investigation, A356 and 6061 aluminum alloys were friction stir welded under tool rotational speed of 1000-1400 rpm and traversing speed of 80-240 mm/min, keeping other parameters same. The variable process window is responsible for the change in total heat input and cooling rate during welding. Structural characterization of the bonded assemblies exhibits recovery-recrystallization in the stirring zone and breaking of coarse eutectic network of Al-Si. Dispersion of fine Si rich particles, refinement of 6061 grain size, low residual stress level and high defect density within weld nugget contribute towards the improvement in bond strength. Lower will be the tool rotational and traversing speed, more dominant will be the above phenomena. Therefore, the joint fabricated using lowest tool traversing and rotational speed, exhibits substantial improvement in bond strength (similar to 98% of that of 6061 alloy), which is also maximum with respect to others. This paper presents a complete asymptotic analysis of a simple model for the evolution of the nocturnal temperature distribution on bare soil in calm clear conditions. The model is based on a simplified flux emissivity scheme that provides a nondiffusive local approximation for estimating longwave radiative cooling near ground. An examination of the various parameters involved shows that the ratio of the characteristic radiative to the diffusive timescale in the problem is of order 10(-3), and can therefore be treated as a small parameter (mu). Certain other plausible approximations and linearization lead to a new equation whose asymptotic solution as mu --> 0 can be written in closed form. Four regimes, consishttp://eprints.iisc.ernet.in/cgi/users/home?screen=EPrint::Edit&eprintid=27192&stage=core#tting of a transient at nominal sunset, a radiative-diffusive boundary ('Ramdas') layer on ground, a boundary layer transient and a radiative outer solution, are identified. The asymptotic solution reproduces all the qualitative features of more exact numerical simulations, including the occurrence of a lifted temperature minimum and its evolution during night, ranging from continuing growth to relatively sudden collapse of the Ramdas layer.

The Palu Metamorphic Complex (PMC) is exposed in a late Cenozoic orogenic belt in NW Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is a composite terrane comprising a gneiss unit of Gondwana origin, a schist unit composed of meta-sediments deposited along the SE Sundaland margin in the Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary, and one or more slivers of amphibolite with oceanic crust characteristics. The gneiss unit forms part of the West Sulawesi block underlying the northern and central sections of the Western Sulawesi Province. The presence of Late Triassic granitoids and recycled Proterozoic zircons in this unit combined with its isotopic signature suggests that the West Sulawesi block has its origin in the New Guinea margin from which it rifted in the late Mesozoic. It docked with Sundaland sometime during the Late Cretaceous. U–Th–Pb dating results for monazite suggest that another continental fragment may have collided with the Sundaland margin in the earliest Miocene. High-pressure (HP) and ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) rocks (granulite, peridotite, eclogite) are found as tectonic slices within the PMC, mostly along the Palu–Koro Fault Zone, a major strike-slip fault that cuts the complex. Mineralogical and textural features suggest that some of these rocks resided at depths of 60–120 km during a part of their histories. Thermochronological data (U–Th–Pb zircon and 40Ar/39Ar) from the metamorphic rocks indicate a latest Miocene to mid-Pliocene metamorphic event, which was accompanied by widespread granitoid magmatism and took place in an extensional tectonic setting. It caused recrystallization of, and new overgrowths on, pre-existing zircon crystals, and produced andalusite–cordierite–sillimanite–staurolite assemblages in pelitic protoliths, indicating HT–LP (Buchan-type) metamorphism. The PMC was exhumed as a core complex at moderate rates (c. 0.7–1.0 mm/yr) accompanied by rapid cooling in the Plio-Pleistocene. Some of the UHP rocks were transported to the surface at significantly higher rates (⩾16 mm/yr). The results of our study do not support recent plate tectonic reconstructions that propose a NW Australia margin origin for the West Sulawesi block (e.g. Hall et al., 2009).

A miniature furnace suitable for routine collection of x-ray data up to 1000°C from single crystals on the Hilger and Watts linear diffractometer, without restricting the normally allowed region of reciprocal space on the diffractometer, is described. The crystal is heated primarily by radiation from a surrounding current-heated, stationary platinum coil wound on a silica bracket. The coil is split at its middle to provide a 4 mm gap for crystal mounting and x-irradiation. The crystal, mounted on a standard goniometer head, can be rotated and centred freely, as in the room temperature case. There is no need for any radiation shields or water-cooling arrangement. Investigations up to 1500°C are possible with slight modifications of the furnace.

RECENT work on the lower oxide of sulphur1,2 has established that disulphur monoxide (S2O) or its polymeric form is produced when sulphur is burnt in oxygen under reduced pressure. It has now been shown that it is possible to make use of an oxide of a heavy metal as a source of limited supply of oxygen to prepare the disulphur monoxide. For example, when a mixture of finely powdered cupric oxide and sulphur (1 : 5 by weight) is heated under vacuum in a glass tube gaseous products are evolved. which, on cooling in a trap surrounded by liquid air, will give an orange-red condensate (S2O)x. This condensate also gives off sulphur dioxide in stages as the temperature is raised, finally leaving a residue of elemental sulphur. Copper sulphide and excess of sulphur are left behind in the reaction tube.

Details of the design and operation of a Weissenberg camera suitable for x-ray investigations between -180°c and 200°c are presented. The camera employs a novel arrangement of spur and bevel gears to couple the goniometer spindle to the worm rod which controls the range of oscillation. The entire drive system and the goniometer assembly are mounted on a support which permits the insertion or removal of a cylindrical cassette from the gear-box side without disturbing the cooling assembly and the layer-line screen. The cassette can also be inserted from the opposite side. The specimen can be cooled either directly by a stream of liquid air or by the cold gas from its evaporation. Condensation of moisture at low temperatures is prevented by heating the layer-line tubes internally.

Thermotropic liquid crystals are known to display rich phase behavior on temperature variation. Although the nematic phase is orientationally ordered but translationally disordered, a smectic phase is characterized by the appearance of a partial translational order in addition to a further increase in orientational order. In an attempt to understand the interplay between orientational and translational order in the mesophases that thermotropic liquid crystals typically exhibit upon cooling from the high-temperature isotropic phase, we investigate the potential energy landscapes of a family of model liquid crystalline systems. The configurations of the system corresponding to the local potential energy minima, known as the inherent structures, are determined from computer simulations across the mesophases. We find that the depth of the potential energy minima explored by the system along an isochor grows through the nematic phase as temperature drops in contrast to its insensitivity to temperature in the isotropic and smectic phases. The onset of the growth of the orientational order in the parent phase is found to induce a translational order, resulting in a smectic-like layer in the underlying inherent structures; the inherent structures, surprisingly, never seem to sustain orientational order alone if the parent nematic phase is sandwiched between the high-temperature isotropic phase and the low-temperature smectic phase. The Arrhenius temperature dependence of the orientational relaxation time breaks down near the isotropic-nematic transition. We find that this breakdown occurs at a temperature below which the system explores increasingly deeper potential energy minima.

The crystal structure determination of the anhydrous form of any organic compound has been a challenge because of solvent incorporation during crystallization. A device to grow anhydrous forms of low melting organic solids based on vaporization and condensation by a gradient cooling technique has been designed. Its utility has been evaluated by growing anhydrous forms of ciprofloxacin, midazolam, and ofloxacin. Ciprofloxacin crystallizes in triclinic P (1) over bar, midazolam in monoclinic P2(1)/n, and ofloxacin in the C2/c space group. Comparative studies on the conformational features with solvated structure show no significant variation in the aromatic moieties.

We report the results of our non-resonant microwave absorption (NRMA) studies on single crystals of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl 2212) which reflect the occurrence of intrinsic Josephson coupling in these crystals. We have studied the magnetic field induced microwave absorption at various temperatures from 4.2K to T-c (similar to 104K) using a standard CW EPR spectrometer (H-dc parallel to c). We observe the appearance of a characteristic feature in the NRMA signals similar to the ones observed earlier by us in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi 2212) starting a few degrees below T-c, which on cooling passes through a maximum in intensity before disappearing at a further low temperature. This behaviour is attributed to the appearance, strengthening and disappearance of Josephson response consequent to the temperature dependence of the viscosity of the Josephson medium between the CuO2 superconducting sheets.

The charge-transfer complexes of p-dichlorobenzene (PDB) with some aromatic π acceptors such as m-nitrobenzaldehyde (MNB), picric acid (PA), p-nitrobenzoic acid (PNB), and m-dinitrobenzene (MDNB) were prepared by slowly adding the acceptor to the molten donor and then cooling the mass to 15°C. The NQR frequencies of these complexes were measured at room temperature. Contrary to the theoretical prediction, the NQR shift is positive, indicating that the NQR shift in donor-acceptor complexes is indirectly related to the charge-transfer interaction. Bond properties are discussed in terms of frequency shift.

We study the equilibrium properties of the nearest-neighbor Ising antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice in the presence of a staggered field conjugate to one of the degenerate ground states. Using a mapping of the ground states of the model without the staggered field to dimer coverings on the dual lattice, we classify the ground states into sectors specified by the number of "strings." We show that the effect of the staggered field is to generate long-range interactions between strings. In the limiting case of the antiferromagnetic coupling constant J becoming infinitely large, we prove the existence of a phase transition in this system and obtain a finite lower bound for the transition temperature. For finite J, we study the equilibrium properties of the system using Monte Carlo simulations with three different dynamics. We find that in all the three cases, equilibration times for low-field values increase rapidly with system size at low temperatures. Due to this difficulty in equilibrating sufficiently large systems at low temperatures, our finite-size scaling analysis of the numerical results does not permit a definite conclusion about the existence of st phase transition for finite values of J. A surprising feature in the system is the fact that unlike usual glassy systems; a zero-temperature quench almost always leads to the ground state, while a slow cooling does not.

Raman scattering experiments have been performed on ferroelastic CsIO4 over the temperature range 323K to 200K during cooling and heating cycles. The spectra display marked changes at 256K and 244K during the cooling cycle and at 287K and 291K during the heating cycle. The transition at 256K is suggested to be from normal to incommensurate phase which changes over to a commensurate structure at 244K.
Ultrasonic measurement of the elastic constants of sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate single crystals
Resumo:
Sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate single crystals possess excellent nonlinear optical properties such that they can be used for optical second-harmonic generation. It belongs to the orthorhombic system with the space group Ima2. Slow evaporation or slow cooling techniques can be used to grow good optical quality single crystals from supersaturated solution. All the nine elastic constants of this crystal have been measured using an ultrasonic technique. Samples for measurements have been cut along desired crystallographic axes and the pulse echo overlap technique has been used to measure longitudinal and shear ultrasonic wave velocities along appropriate symmetry directions in the crystal. The McSkimin Delta t criterion has been applied to determine the round trip travel time accurately, from which the nine elastic constants have been evaluated. Temperature variation of selected elastic constants in a limited range have also been measured and reported.

In this article, a general definition of the process average temperature has been developed, and the impact of the various dissipative mechanisms on 1/COP of the chiller evaluated. The present component-by-component black box analysis removes the assumptions regarding the generator outlet temperature(s) and the component effective thermal conductances. Mass transfer resistance is also incorporated into the absorber analysis to arrive at a more realistic upper limit to the cooling capacity. Finally, the theoretical foundation for the absorption chiller T-s diagram is derived. This diagrammatic approach only requires the inlet and outlet conditions of the chiller components and can be employed as a practical tool for system analysis and comparison. A solid solution of the type Ba5x/2Bi(1-x)5/3Nb5O15 has been identified in the BaO-Bi2O3-Nb2O5 system for the first time. The limits of the solid solution are within the range 0.52 <= x <= 0.80. The compositions x = 0.52, 0.60, 0.72, 0.77, 0.78, and 0.80 were synthesized by the solid-state technique from the starting materials in stoichiometric quantities. The powder X-ray patterns of all the phases in the domain indicate a structural similarity to tetragonal tungsten bronzes (TTBs). The compositions below x = 0.52 and those above x = 0.80 exhibit barium niobate and bismuth niobate impurities, respectively. Single crystals of the composition x = 0.77 were obtained by the melt cooling technique. The crystal structure of Ba3.85/2Bi1.15/3Nb5O15 (x = 0.77) was solved in the tetragonal space group P4bm (No. 100) with a = 12.4938 (14) angstrom, c = 3.9519 (2) A, V = 616.87 (10) angstrom(3), and Z = 2 and was refined to an R index of 0.034. Dielectric measurements on all the phases indicate a typical relaxor behavior with a broad phase transition at T-m approximate to 300 K.
