New protic ionic liquids (PILs) based on the diisopropyl-ethylammonium cation have been synthesized through a simple and atom-economic neutralization reaction between the diisopropyl-ethylamine and selected carboxylic acid. Densities and rheological properties were then measured for two original diisopropyl-ethylammonium-based protic ionic liquids (heptanoate and octanoate) at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The effect of the presence of water or acetonitrile on the measured values was also examined over the whole composition range at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. From these values, excess properties were calculated and correlated by using a Redlich-Kister-type equation. Finally, a qualitative analysis of the evolution of studied properties with the alkyl chain length of the anion and with the presence or not of water (or acetonitrile) was performed. From this analysis, it appears that selected PILs and their mixtures with water or acetonitrile have a non-Newtonian shear thickening behavior, and the addition of water or acetonitrile on these PILs increases this phenomena by the formation of aggregates in these media.

Racemic (1R*,2R*)-1,2-dihydroxy-[1- 13C 1]propylphosphonic acid and 1-hydroxy-[1- 13C 1]acetone were synthesized and fed to R. huakuii PMY1. Alanine and a mixture of valine and methionine were isolated as their N-acetyl derivatives from the cell hydrolysate by reversed-phase HPLC and analyzed by NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the carbon atoms of the respective carboxyl groups were highly 13C-labeled (up to 65 %). Hydroxyacetone is therefore considered an obligatory intermediate of the biodegradation of fosfomycin by R. huakuii PMY1.

A rapid liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method has been developed and validated for the simultaneous identification, confirmation and quantitation of seven licensed anti-inflammatory drugs (AIDS) in bovine milk. The method was validated in accordance with the criteria defined in Commission Decision 2002/657/EC. Two classes of AIDS were investigated, corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The developed method is capable of detecting and confirming dexamethasone (DXM), betamethasone (BTM), prednisolone (FRED), tolfenamic acid (TV), 5-hydroxy flunixin (5-OH-FLU). meloxicam (MLX) and 4-methyl amino antipyrine (4-MAA) at their associated maximum residue limits (MRLs). These compounds represent all the corticosteroids and NSAIDs licensed for use in bovine animals producing milk for human consumption. These compounds have never been analysed before in the same method and also 4-methyl amino antipyrine has never been analysed with the other licensed NSAIDs. The method can be considered rapid as permits the analysis of up to 30 samples in one day. Milk samples are extracted with acetonitrile; sodium chloride is added to aid partition of the milk and acetonitrile mixture. The acetonitrile extract is then subjected to liquid-liquid purification by the addition of hexane. The purified extract is finally evaporated to dryness and reconstituted in a water/acetonitrile mixture and determination is carried out by LC-MS/MS. Decision limit (CC alpha) values and detection capability (CC beta) values have been established for each compound. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Furazolidone, a nitrofuran antibiotic, is banned from use in food animal production within the European Union. Increasingly, compliance with this ban is monitored by use of analytical methods to detect a stable tissue-bound metabolite, 3-amino-2-oxazolidinone (AOZ). Widespread use of furazolidone in poultry and prawns imported into Europe highlighted the urgent need for development of nitrofuran immunoassay screening tests. The first enzyme-linked immunoabsorbant assay for detection of AOZ residues in prawns (shrimps) is now described. Prawn samples were derivatized with o-nitrobenzaldehyde, extracted into ethyl acetate, washed with hexane and applied to a competitive enzyme immunoassay based on a rabbit polyclonal antiserum. Assay limit of detection (LOD) (mean+3 s) calculated from the analysis of 20 known negative cold and warm water prawn samples was 0.1 mug kg(-1). Intra- and interassay relative standard deviations were determined as 18.8 and 38.2%, respectively, using a negative prawn fortified at 0.7 mug kg(-1). The detection capability (CCbeta), defined as the concentration of AOZ at which 20 different fortified samples yielded results above the LOD, was achieved at fortification between 0.4 and 0.7 mug kg(-1). Incurred prawn samples (n=8) confirmed by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry detection to contain AOZ concentrations between 0.4 and 12.7 mug kg(-1) were all screened positive by this enzyme-linked immunoabsorbant assay. Further data are presented and discussed with regard to calculating assay LOD based on accepting a 5% false-positive rate with representative negative prawn samples. Such an acceptance improves the sensitivity of an ELISA and in this case permitted an LOD of 0.05 mug kg(-1) and a CCbeta of below 0.4 mug kg(-1).

Mast cell activation by polycationic substances is believed to result from a direct activation of G protein alpha subunits and it was suggested that the adaption of amphipathic, alpha-helical conformations would allow the peptide to reach the cytosolic compartment to interact with G proteins (Mousli et al., 1994, Immunopharmacology 27, 1, for review). We investigated the histamine-releasing activity of model peptides as well as analogues of magainin 2 amide and neuropeptide Y with different amphipathicities and alpha-helix content on rat peritoneal mast cells. Amphipathic helicity is not a prerequisite for mast cell activation. Moreover, non-helical magainin peptides with high histamine-releasing activity were less active in the liberation of carboxyfluoresceine from negatively charged liposomes, indicating that peptide-induced mast cell activation and peptide-induced membrane perturbation do not correlate. In contrast to the negligible influence of the secondary structure, amino acid configuration may exert a striking influence on peptide-induced mast cell activation. Thus histamine-release by substance P was markedly impaired when the L-amino acids in the positively charged N-terminal region were replaced by D-amino acids, with [D-Arg(1)]substance P being the most inactive substance P diastereoisomer.

Cryptic plasmids were found in Rhodococcus rhodochrous NCIMB13064 derivatives which had lost the ability to utilize short-chain 1-chloroalkanes (chain length C-3-C-10) and had acquired the ability to degrade naphthalene. The reversions of these derivatives to the original phenotype were accompanied by the loss of the cryptic plasmids. The 4969-bp pKA22 plasmid was cloned in Escherichia coli and sequenced. This plasmid encodes a putative 33,200-Da protein which contains motifs typical of theta replicase proteins and shows a high degree of similarity to a putative theta replicase from Brevibacterium linens plasmid pRBL1 and to a putative protein encoded by ORF1 of the plasmid pAL5000 from Mycobacterium fortuitum. Two sets of long direct repeats were found in pKA22 which may be involved in the replication of the plasmid and recombination processes. (C) 1997 Academic Press.

Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators, which have the ability to return to a predetermined shape when heated, have many potential applications in aeronautics, surgical tools, robotics, and so on. Although the number of applications is increasing, there has been limited success in precise motion control owing to the hysteresis effect of these smart actuators. The present paper proposes an optimization of the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control method for SMA actuators by using genetic algorithm and the Preisach hysteresis model.
