A potentiometric sensor constructed from a mixture of 25% (m/m) spinel-type manganese oxide (lambda-MnO2), 50% (m/m) graphite powder and 25% (m/m) mineral oil is used for the determination of lithium ions in a flow injection analysis system. Experimental parameters, such as pH of the carrier solution, flow rate, injection sample volume, and selectivity for Li+ against other alkali and alkaline-earth ions and the response time of this sensor were investigated. The sensor response to lithium ions was linear in the concentration range 8.6 x 10(-5) - 1.0 x 10(-2) mol L-1 with a slope 78.9 +/- 0.3 mV dec(-1) over a wide pH range 7 - 10 (Tris buffer), without interference of other alkali and alkaline-earth metals. For a flow rate of 5.0 mL min(-1) and a injection sample volume of 408.6 muL, the relative standard deviation for repeated injections of a 5.0 x 10(-4) mol L-1 lithium ions was 0.3%.

The sintering of ZrO2. MgO . ZnO powder has been investigated by TMA (Thermal Mechanical Analyser) and its phases analysed by XRD (X-ray diffraction pattern). The data obtained from sintering was studied by the Bannister equation and its dominant sintering mechanism was calculated. It was observed that the ZnO addition in the ZrO2. MgO solid solution lead to increased zirconia stabilization, According to the vacancies model, the ZnO addition did not lead to zirconia phases stabilization (PSZ). An analysis of the rate control in the initial stage of the sintering (region I) showed a mechanism of volume diffusion type. In other regions (regions II and III), the grain growth did lead to the Bannister equation deviation, which was observed by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). These results were different from those demonstrated by other authors who studied the ZrO2. Y2O3 solid solution and obtained a mechanism of grain boundary diffusion type. This study evaluated histomorphologically the influence of chronological age of the dog on the dental pulp-healing process after capping with the All Bond 2 system or with calcium hydroxide paste. The animals were divided according to age into young and adult groups. Class 5-type cavities were prepared, and the pulp was submitted to an exposure of a diameter of 0.5 mm. The pulp of the teeth was then protected with the adhesive system or with a calcium hydroxide paste. Sixty days after treatment, the results obtained with the adhesive system in the young group were significantly better than those in the adult group. With calcium hydroxide, the results were similar for both groups. The pulp treated with calcium hydroxide exhibited a complete hard tissue bridge and a pulp without inflammatory reaction, a fact not observed when the adhesive system was used. In conclusion, the chronological age of the pulp influenced the comparative results only for the adhesive system (P = 0.1), and the total results were better with calcium hydroxide than with the All Bond 2 system (P = 0.01).

A relativistic treatment of the deuteron and its observables based on a two-body Dirac (Breit) equation, with phenomenological interactions, associated to one-boson exchanges with cutoff masses, is presented. The 16-component wave function for the deuteron (J(pi) = 1+) solution contains four independent radial functions which obey a system of four coupled differential equations of first order. This radial system is numerically integrated, from infinity to the origin, by fixing the value of the deuteron binding energy and using appropriate boundary conditions at infinity. Specific examples of mixtures containing scalar, pseudoscalar and vector like terms are discussed in some detail and several observables of the deuteron are calculated. Our treatment differs from more conventional ones in that nonrelativistic reductions of the order c-2 are not used.

The structural organization of Sb2O3-SbPO4 glasses has been studied by FTIR, Raman, P-31 MAS and spin echo NMR, Mossbauer and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES at K and L-3,L-1-Sb edges). The combined results can be explained in terms of two potential mechanisms describing the change of the Sb(m) local environment upon incorporation of Q((4))-type phosphate. The formation of the latter species requires anionic compensation that may be adjusted by (a) formation of non bridging oxygen or (b) formation of SbO4E- groups (E = non-bonding electron pair). The second model is favored.

The application process of fluid fertilizers through variable rates implemented by classical techniques with feedback and conventional equipments can be inefficient or unstable. This paper proposes an open-loop control system based on artificial neural network of the type multilayer perceptron for the identification and control of the fertilizer flow rate. The network training is made by the algorithm of Levenberg-Marquardt with training data obtained from measurements. Preliminary results indicate a fast, stable and low cost control system for precision fanning. Copyright (C) 2000 IFAC.

The tin dioxide is an n-type semiconductor, which exhibits varistor behavior with high capacity of absorption of energy, whose function is to restrict transitory over-voltages without being destroyed, when it is doped with some oxides. Varistors are used in alternated current fields as well as in continuous current, and it can be applied in great interval of voltages or in great interval of currents. The electric properties of the varistor depend on the defects that happen at the grain boundaries and the adsorption of oxygen. The (98.90-x)%SnO2.0.25%CoO+0.75%MnO2+0.05%Ta2O5+0.05%Tr2O3 systems, in which Tr=La or Nd. Current-voltage measurements were accomplished for determination of the non-linear coefficient were studied. SEM microstructure analysis was made to evaluate the microstructural characteristics of the systems. The results showed that the rare-earth oxides have influenced the electrical behavior presented by the system. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

An experiment that combines opto-mechanical and electrical measurements for the characterization of a loudspeaker is presented. We describe a very simple laser vibrometer for evaluating the amplitude of the vibration (displacement) of the speaker cone. The setup is essentially a Michelson-type interferometer operated by an inexpensive semiconductor laser (diode laser). It is shown that the simultaneous measurements of three amplitudes (displacement, electrical current, and applied voltage), as functions of the frequency of vibration, allow us to characterize the speaker system. The experiment is easy to perform, and it demonstrates several useful concepts of optics, mechanics, and electricity, allowing, students to gain an intuitive physical insight into the relations between mathematical models and, an actual speaker system. The SPPS methodology has continuously been investigated as a valuable model to monitor the solvation properties of polymeric materials. In this connection, the present work applied HRMAS-NMR spectroscopy to examine the dynamics of an aggregating peptide sequence attached to a resin core with varying peptide loading (up to 80%) and solvent system. Low and high substituted BHAR were used for assembling the VQAAIDYING sequence and some of its minor fragments. The HRMAS-NMR results were in agreement with the swelling of each resin, i.e. there was an improved resolution of resonance peaks in the better solvated conditions. Moreover, the peptide loading and the attached peptide sequence also affected the spectra. Strong peptide chain aggregation was observed mainly in highly peptide loaded resins when solvated in CDCl3. Conversely, due to the better swelling of these highly loaded resins in DMSO, improved NMR spectra were acquired in this polar aprotic solvent, thus enabling the detection of relevant sequence-dependent conformational alterations. The more prominent aggregation was displayed by the VQAAIDYING segment and not by any of its intermediary fragments and these findings were also corroborated by EPR studies of these peptide-resins labelled properly with an amino acid-type spin probe. Making diagnoses in oral pathology are often difficult and confusing in dental practice, especially for the lessexperienced dental student. One of the most promising areas in bioinformatics is computer-aided diagnosis, where a computer system is capable of imitating human reasoning ability and provides diagnoses with an accuracy approaching that of expert professionals. This type of system could be an alternative tool for assisting dental students to overcome the difficulties of the oral pathology learning process. This could allow students to define variables and information, important to improving the decision-making performance. However, no current open data management system has been integrated with an artificial intelligence system in a user-friendly environment. Such a system could also be used as an education tool to help students perform diagnoses. The aim of the present study was to develop and test an open case-based decisionsupport system. Methods: An open decision-support system based on Bayes' theorem connected to a relational database was developed using the C++ programming language. The software was tested in the computerisation of a surgical pathology service and in simulating the diagnosis of 43 known cases of oral bone disease. The simulation was performed after the system was initially filled with data from 401 cases of oral bone disease. Results: the system allowed the authors to construct and to manage a pathology database, and to simulate diagnoses using the variables from the database. Conclusion: Combining a relational database and an open decision-support system in the same user-friendly environment proved effective in simulating diagnoses based on information from an updated database.
