Despite the general belief that the interaction between extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) and ants is mutualistic, the defensive function of EFNs has been poorly documented in South American savannas. In this article, we evaluate the potential impact of EFNs (benefits and costs) on two species of plants from the dry areas of Central Brazil, Anemopaegma album and Anemopaegma scabriusculum (Bignoniaceae). In particular, we characterize the composition of substances secreted by the EFNs, test whether EFNs attract ants, and whether ants actually present a defensive role, leading to reduced herbivory and increased plant fitness. Histochemical analyses indicated that EFNs from both species of Anemopaegma secrete an exudate that is composed of sugars, and potentially lipids and proteins. Furthermore, EFNs from both species were shown to present a significant role in ant attraction. However, contrary to common expectations, ants were not found to protect plants against herbivore attack. No effect was found between ant visitation and flower or fruit production in A. album, while the presence of ants led to a significant decrease in flower production in A. scabriusculum. These results suggest that EFNs might present a similar cost and benefit in A. album, and a higher cost than benefit in A. scabriusculum. Since the ancestor of Anemopaegma occupied humid forests and already presented EFNs that were maintained in subsequent lineages that occupied savannas, we suggest that phylogenetic inertia might explain the presence of EFNs in the species of Anemopaegma in which EFNs lack a defensive function.

We present STAR measurements of azimuthal anisotropy by means of the two- and four-particle cumulants nu(2) (nu(2){2} and nu(2){4}) for Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at center-of-mass energies root S-NN = 62.4 and 200 GeV. The difference between nu(2){2}(2) and nu(2){4}(2) is related to nu(2) fluctuations (sigma(nu 2)) and nonflow (delta(2)). We present an upper limit to sigma(nu 2)/nu 2. Following the assumption that eccentricity fluctuations sigma(epsilon) dominate nu(2) fluctuations nu(2)/sigma nu(2) approximate to epsilon/sigma epsilon we deduce the nonflow implied for several models of eccentricity fluctuations that would be required for consistency with nu(2){2} and nu(2){4}. We also present results on the ratio of nu(2) to eccentricity.

Feeding experiments with C-13-labeled precursors were performed in order to establish the biosynthesis of two N-acylated dihydropyrroles, (8E)-1-(2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-2- methyldec-8-ene-1,3-dione (1) and 1-(2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-2- methyldecane-1,3-dione (2), isolated from the cultures of a marine-derived Penicillium citrinum. The biosynthesis of both, 1 and 2, involves the incorporation of acetate, methionine and ornithine.

The Brazilian population represents an admixture of native Amerindians, Portuguese settlers and Africans who were brought as slaves during the colonization period that began in the 16th century and was followed by waves of immigrations of Europeans and Asians in the 20th century. The contribution of these different ethnic groups to the constitution of Brazilian populations from different geographic regions is variable and, in addition to environmental factors, might act by determining different allele profiles among Brazilian populations from different regions. We studied polymorphic sites at the 3' untranslated region of the HLA-G gene in individuals from a Northeastern Brazilian region and compared them to our previously published data about a Southeastern Brazilian region, located at a distance of 2589 km. Our results showed that most polymorphic sites present a similar distribution in both populations, except for the lower frequency of the +3003C allele in the Northeastern population compared to the Southeastern population. Although differences in genotypic distribution were only significant for the +3003 locus (P = 0.0201), the diversity of haplotypes was distinct for each population. These results are important for casecontrol studies on the association of human leucocyte antigen-G polymorphism with disease and also in terms of the genetic structure of two distinct Brazilian populations.

We report self-similar properties of periodic structures remarkably organized in the two-parameter space for a two-gene system, described by two-dimensional symmetric map. The map consists of difference equations derived from the chemical reactions for gene expression and regulation. We characterize the system by using Lyapunov exponents and isoperiodic diagrams identifying periodic windows, denominated Arnold tongues and shrimp-shaped structures. Period-adding sequences are observed for both periodic windows. We also identify Fibonacci-type series and Golden ratio for Arnold tongues, and period multiple-of-three windows for shrimps. Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum antibodies in sera of 325 dogs in 11 villages inhabited by the Tapirape and Karaja ethnic groups in the south of the Brazilian Amazon was determined by the use of an indirect fluorescence antibody test. Antibodies (cutoff 1:16) to T. gondii were found in 169 (52%) and to N. caninum (cutoff 1:50) in 32 (9.8%) of 325 dogs. Seropositivity for both parasitic infections was widely prevalent in dogs from these villages and was higher in older dogs, indicating post-natal transmission.

Relativistic nuclear collisions data on two-particle correlations exhibit structures as function of relative azimuthal angle and rapidity. A unified description of these near-side and away-side structures is proposed for low to moderate transverse momentum. It is based on the combined effect of tubular initial conditions and hydrodynamical expansion. Contrary to expectations, the hydrodynamics solution shows that the high-energy density tubes (leftover from the initial particle interactions) give rise to particle emission in two directions and this is what leads to the various structures. This description is sensitive to some of the initial tube parameters and may provide a probe of the strong interaction. This explanation is compared with an alternative one where some triangularity in the initial conditions is assumed. A possible experimental test is suggested. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Two-photon cooperative absorption is common in solid-state physics. In a sample of trapped cold atoms, this effect may open up new possibilities for the study of nonlinear effects. The experiment described herein starts with two colliding Na atoms in the S hyperfine ground state. The pair absorb two photons, resulting in both a P-1/2 and a P-3/2 atom. This excitation is observed by ionization using an external light source. A simple model that considers only dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms allows us to understand the basic features observed in the experimental results. Both the pair of generated atoms and the photons originating from their decay are correlated and may have interesting applications that remain to be explored.

Guapira graciliflora and Neea theifera are taxonomically related species of the tribe Pisoneae. Both species are found in the same environment, the Brazilian Cerrado, and therefore, are subjected to similar selective pressures. These species occur in oligotrophic environments, yet contain high concentrations of nitrogen in their leaves. The present study was carried out to investigate the ecological role of nitrogen in herbivory on these species. The differences in the N content, compositions of secondary N-metabolites, mechanical resistance, and water content between their leaves indicate that these species have different adaptations as defense mechanisms. In both species, their high nitrogen content seems to promote herbivory. The presence of secondary nitrogen metabolites does not prevent the species from suffering intense damage by herbivores on their early leaves. The herbivory rates observed were lower for mature leaves of both species than for young leaves. In G. graciliflora, nutritional content and leaf hardness are the most important variables correlated with reduction of herbivory rates, whereas in N. theifera, N compounds are also correlated with herbivory rates. Despite the differences in the strategies of these two species, they exhibit a similar efficiency of protection against natural enemies because their total herbivory rates are similar. The difference in their N defense allocation may imply benefits for survival under Cerrado conditions. We briefly discuss the oligotrophic habitat conditions of the studied plants and possible advantages of their strategies of N accumulation and metabolic uses. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The C-13(O-18,O-16)C-15 reaction has been studied at 84 MeV incident energy. The ejectiles have been detected at forward angles and C-15 excitation energy spectra have been obtained up to about 20 MeV. Several known bound and resonant states of C-15 have been identified together with two unknown structures at 10.5 MeV (FWHM = 2.5 MeV) and 13.6 MeV (FWHM = 2.5 MeV). Calculations based Oil the removal of two uncorrelated neutrons from the projectile describe a significant part of the continuum observed in the energy spectra. In particular the structure at 10.5 MeV is dominated by a resonance of C-15 near the C-13 + n + n threshold. Similar structures are found in nearby nuclei such as C-14 and Be-11. Experimental and theoretical studies on the two-photon absorption properties of two oxazole derivatives: 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) and 2-(4-biphenylyI)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) are presented. The two-photon absorption cross-section spectra were determined by means of the Z-scan technique, from 460 up to 650 nm, and reached peak values of 84 GM for PBD and 27 GM for PPO. Density Functional Theory and response function formalism are used to determine the molecular structures and the one- and two-photon absorption properties and to assist in the interpretation of the experimental results. The Polarizable Continuum Model in one-photon absorption calculations is used to estimate solvent effects. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This study reports the isolation and biochemical characterization of two different serine proteases from Bothrops pirajai snake venom, thus providing a comparative analysis of the enzymes. The isolation process consisted of three consecutive chromatographic steps (Sephacryl S-200, Benzamidine Sepharose and C2/C18), resulting in two serine proteases, named BpirSP27 and BpirSP41 after their molecular masses by mass spectrometry (27,121 and 40,639 Da, respectively). Estimation by SDS-PAGE under denaturing conditions showed that, when deglycosylated with PNGase F, BpirSP27 and BpirSP41 had their molecular masses reduced by approximately 15 and 42%, respectively. Both are acidic enzymes, with pI of approximately 4.7 for BpirSP27 and 3.7 for BpirSP41, and their N-terminal amino acid sequences showed 57% identity to each other, with high similarity to the sequences of other snake venom serine proteases (SVSPs). The enzymes showed different actions on bovine fibrinogen, with BpirSP27 acting preferentially on the B beta chain and BpirSP41 on both A alpha and B beta chains. The two serine proteases were also able to degrade fibrin and blood clots in vitro depending on the doses and incubation periods, with higher results for BpirSP41. Both enzymes coagulated the human plasma in a dose-dependent manner, and BpirSP41 showed a higher coagulant potential, with minimum coagulant dose (MCD) of similar to 3.5 mu g versus 20 mu g for BpirSP27. The enzymes were capable of hydrolyzing different chromogenic substrates, including S-2238 for thrombin-like enzymes, but only BpirSP27 acted on the substrate S-2251 for plasmin. They also showed high stability against variations of temperature and pH, but their activities were significantly reduced after preincubation with Cu2+ ion and specific serine protease inhibitors. In addition. BpirSP27 induced aggregation of washed platelets to a greater extent than BpirSP41. The results showed significant structural and functional differences between B. pirajai serine proteases, providing interesting insights into the structure-function relationship of SVSPs. The global emergence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) has been characterized by a clonal spread of strains belonging to clonal complex 17 (CC17). Genetic features and clonal relationships of 53 VREfm isolated from patients in 2 hospitals in Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil, during 2005-2010 were determined as a contribution to the Brazilian evolutionary history of these nosocomial pathogens. All isolates were daptomycin susceptible, vancomycin-resistant, and had the vanA gene. The predominant virulence genes were acm and esp. Only 5 VREfm isolated in 2005-2006 had intact Tn1546, while 81% showed Tn1546 with deleted left extremity and insertion of IS1251 between the vanS and vanH genes. Multilocus sequence typing analysis permitted the identification of 9 different sequence types (STs), with 5 being new ones (656, 657, 658, 659, and 660). Predominant STs were ST412 and ST478, all belonging to CC17, except ST658. This is the first report of the ST78 in Brazil. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Stenophragma Skuse was originally described for S. meridianum (Skuse), from Australia. Since then seventeen species have been added to the genus-from Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, and Canada. We add two new species to the genus Stenophragma-S. bickeli n.sp. and S. collessi n.sp.-from Western Australia. An identification key for the Australian species of Stenophragma is provided. Comments are made about possible relationships among these new species and the remaining Australasian species of the genus. OLIVEIRA, SARAH SIQUEIRA, AND DALTON DE SOUZA AMORIM. 2012. Two new species of Stenophragma Skuse from Western Australia (Diptera, Mycetophilidae, Sciophilinae). Records of the Australian Museum 64(2): 149-158.
