Reasons and benefits associated with ISO 9001 - Certification for sugar and ethanol companies

With increasing business competitiveness, companies have sought to adapt their processes and / or products to worldwide established quality standards in order to achieve a greater share of consumers having as favorable aspect the quality assurance of the products and/or services provided. It was observed that companies of different sizes have different challenges regarding the certification however, the degree of difficulty is the same for all of them. The objective of this paper is to verify the reasons for the implementation of ISO 9001, the obstacles encountered during the implementation, the benefits arising from the use of the quality management system and the degree of difficulty to implement this standard. This work was developed based on a survey involving companies certified with ISO 9001:2008 from the productive sector of sugar, ethanol and derivatives of sugarcane, located in all Brazilian states. It was observed that companies of different sizes have different challenges regarding the certification however the degree of difficulty is the same for all of them. Thus, we believe that expected results represent a very important contribution to examining the reasons, benefits and difficulties of the ISO 9001 to both, the companies and certification bodies, and to researchers.

Economic evaluation of occupational safety preventive measures in a hospital

BACKGROUND: When an organization performs an integrated analysis of risks through its Occupational Health and Safety Management System, several steps are suggested to address the implications of the identified risks. Namely, the organization should make a detailed analysis of the monetary impact for the organization of each of the preventive measures considered. However, it is also important to perform an analysis of the impact of each measure on society (externalities). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to present a case study related to the application of the proposed economic evaluation methodology. METHODS: An analysis of the work accidents in a hospital has been made. Three of the major types of accidents have been selected: needle stings, falls and excessive strain. Following the risk assessment, some preventive measures have been designed. Subsequently, the Benefit/Cost ratio (B/C) of these measures has been calculated, both in financial terms (from the organization’s perspective) and in economic terms (including the benefits for the worker and for the Society). RESULTS: While the financial ratio is only advantageous in some cases, when the externalities are taken into account, the B/C ratio increases significantly. The Data Mining applied for the prediction of highway roughness due to overloaded trucks

Currently, the quality of the Indonesian national road network is inadequate due to several constraints, including overcapacity and overloaded trucks. The high deterioration rate of the road infrastructure in developing countries along with major budgetary restrictions and high growth in traffic have led to an emerging need for improving the performance of the highway maintenance system. However, the high number of intervening factors and their complex effects require advanced tools to successfully solve this problem. The high learning capabilities of Data Mining (DM) are a powerful solution to this problem. In the past, these tools have been successfully applied to solve complex and multi-dimensional problems in various scientific fields. Therefore, it is expected that DM can be used to analyze the large amount of data regarding the pavement and traffic, identify the relationship between variables, and provide information regarding the prediction of the data. In this paper, we present a new approach to predict the International Roughness Index (IRI) of pavement based on DM techniques. DM was used to analyze the initial IRI data, including age, Equivalent Single Axle Load (ESAL), crack, potholes, rutting, and long cracks. This model was developed and verified using data from an Integrated Indonesia Road Management System (IIRMS) that was measured with the National Association of Australian State Road Authorities (NAASRA) roughness meter. The results of the proposed approach are compared with the IIRMS analytical model adapted to the IRI, and the advantages of the new approach are highlighted. We show that the novel data-driven model is able to learn (with high accuracy) the complex relationships between the IRI and the contributing factors of overloaded trucks

El present projecte de final de carrera ha sigut desenvolupat en el marc d'un conveni de col·laboració entre la UAB i l'empresa Unit4. Aquest projecte reflecteix les millores que s'han implementat en l'aplicació anomenada Porta Firmas, que és una aplicació web de gestió de signatura digital de documents electrònics de Unit4. Aquesta aplicació utilitza frameworks com ara Struts 2, Hibernate i Web Services per oferir serveis de signatura, validació i gestió de documents.

Gestión de objetos digitales con ContentDm: estudio de caso en el Consorci de Biblioteques Universitàries de Catalunya y el Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya

La gestión de objetos digitales, ya sean imágenes u otros tipos de ficheros digitales, supone un reto para las organizaciones. Es un proceso estratégico en el que están implicadas varias tareas dentro de la propia institución, desde una posible digitalización del documento físico a una correcta gestión documental pasando por la óptima definición de los requisitos funcionales que debe tener la herramienta que publique y gestione los objetos digitales. Se presenta el caso de dos instituciones, Consorci de Biblioteques Universitàries de Catalunya e Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya, que afrontaron este proceso estratégico y escogieron ContentDm para la publicación y gestión de sus imágenes digitales.

La Comunitat Europea ha encarregat el disseny i implementació d'una base de dades per a un futur sistema de votacions ciutadanes per Internet. Aquest projecte realitza una proposta del disseny de la base de dades segons els requeriments especificats, i la seva implementació en un sistema de gestió de bases de dades, que en aquest cas és l'ORACLE.
