Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a painful condition and is a clinical challenge due to the different treatment strategies available. High-intensity lasers have been studied as a possible option. The aim of this randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical study was to evaluate the effects of Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers on DH. The study group comprised 28 subjects who met the inclusion criteria. A visual analogue scale was used to quantify sensitivity before treatment as baseline, immediately before and immediately after treatment, and 1 week and 1 month after treatment. Teeth were assigned to four groups: group 1 control (no treatment), group 2 Er:YAG laser treatment (2 Hz/32.4 mJ/5.9 J/cm(2)), group 3 Er,Cr:YSGG laser treatment (0.25 W/4.4 J/cm(2)), and group 4 Er,Cr:YSGG laser treatment (0.50 W/ 8.9 J/cm(2)). Data were collected and submitted to statistical analysis for both evaporative (air) and mechanical (probe) stimulation. For both the air and probe stimulation no differences were observed between the pretreatment sensitivities. With the evaporative stimulus, the pain level immediately after treatment was reduced; however, after this the values remained stable. Irradiation with the Er:YAG laser was associated with the lowest level of pain. With the mechanical stimulus, group 4 showed the most pronounced decrease in pain immediately after treatment; however, by the end of the study, pain levels had increased. Groups 1, 2 and 3 showed a reduction in pain that was significantly different from that in group 4 after the 4 weeks of clinical follow up. Based on the results and within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that none of the laser treatments studied was capable of completely eliminating pain, but the Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers are suitable for the treatment of DH.

The experiment aimed to study the effect of physiological stress on cortisol levels, quality and quantity of milk through punctual administration of ACTH. Twelve Saanen goats were divided in two experimental groups: ACTH group (0,5 mu g of ACTH/Kg.L.W); Placebo group (placebo solution). Milk production, and percentages of protein, fat, lactose and SCC (somatic cells counting) of the milk were analyzed before, during and after the administration of ACTH/placebo. Simultaneously to the ACTH/placebo administration and during three sequential days, blood was collected to evaluate cortisol concentrations. At times -30 and zero, both groups presented basal concentrations of cortisol. The increase of cortisol contents was significant at times 60 (group ACTH: 59.00 +/- 5.70 and groups placebo: 5.23 +/- 1.37ng/mL) and 120 (group ACTH: 47.96 +/- 9.72 and group placebo: 4.38 +/- 1,14ng/mL) since the cortisol content was higher on the ACTH group. The values returned to the basal level at 300 minutes. Concerning milk production, no differences were found between ACTH and placebo groups. Milk, protein, fat, lactose and SCC did not distinguish one group from another. The results indicated that the physiological stress induced during three days was not harmful to milk production and milk quality of Saanen goats.

The aim of this research was to test the hypothesis that treatment with intra-oral appliances with different occlusal designs was beneficial in the management of pain of masticatory muscles compared with a control group. A total of 51 patients were analysed according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) to obtain the diagnosis of masticatory myofascial pain (MMP). The sample was then randomly divided into three groups: group I (n = 21) wore a full coverage acrylic stabilisation occlusal splint; group II (n = 16) wore an anterior device nociceptive trigeminal inhibitory (NTI) system; and group III (n = 14) only received counselling for behavioural changes and self-care (the control group). The first two groups also received counselling. Follow-ups were performed after 2 and 6 weeks and 3 months. In these sessions, patients were evaluated by means of a visual analogue scale (VAS) and pressure pain threshold (PPT) of the masticatory muscles. Possible adverse effects were also recorded, such as discomfort while using the appliance and occlusal changes. The results were analysed with KruskalWallis, anova, Tukeys and Friedman tests, with a significance level of 5%. Group I showed improvement in the reported pain at the first follow-up (2 weeks), whereas for groups II and III, this progress was detected only after 6 weeks and 3 months, respectively. The PPT values did not change significantly. It was concluded that behavioural changes are effective in the management of pain in MMP patients. However, the simultaneous use of occlusal devices appears to produce an earlier improvement.

Root canal preparation may damage NiTi instruments resulting in wear and deformation. The aim of this study was to make a comparative evaluation of the surface topography of the cervical third of four different rotary systems, before and after being used twelve times, in 1.440 resin blocks with simulated root canals with standardized 45 degrees curvatures, and analyzed by atomic force microscopy AFM. The blocks were divided into four groups and prepared according to the manufacturers recommendations: Group 1 - K3 (R); Group 2 - Protaper Universal (R); Group 3 - Twisted Files (R) and Group 4 - Biorace (R). After each preparation, the instruments were washed and autoclaved. A total of 240 instruments were selected, being 30 new instruments and 30 after having been used for the 12th time, from each group. These instruments were analyzed by AFM and for quantitative evaluation, the mean RMS (Root mean square) values of the cervical third of the specimens from the four groups were used. The result showed that all the rotary files used for the 12th time suffered wear with change in the topography of the cervical region of the active portion of the file (ANOVA p < 0.01). Classifying the specimens in increasing order, from the least to the greatest wear suffered, Group 3 (2.8993 nm) presented the least wear, followed by Group 4 (12.2520 nm), Group 1 (36.0043 nm) and lastly, Group 2 (59.8750 nm) with the largest amount of cervical surface wear. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of 830 and 670 nm diode laser on the viability of random skin flaps in rats. Background data: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been reported to be successful in stimulating the formation of new blood vessels and reducing the inflammatory process after injury. However, the efficiency of such treatment remains uncertain, and there is also some controversy regarding the efficacy of different wavelengths currently on the market. Materials and methods: Thirty Wistar rats were used and divided into three groups, with 10 rats in each. A random skin flap was raised on the dorsum of each animal. Group 1 was the control group, group 2 received 830 nm laser radiations, and group 3 was submitted to 670 nm laser radiation (power density = 0.5 mW/cm(2)). The animals underwent laser therapy with 36 J/cm(2) energy density (total energy = 2.52 J and 72 sec per session) immediately after surgery and on the 4 subsequent days. The application site of laser radiation was one point at 2.5 cm from the flap's cranial base. The percentage of skin flap necrosis area was calculated on the 7th postoperative day using the paper template method. A skin sample was collected immediately after to determine the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and the epidermal cell proliferation index (KiD67). Results: Statistically significant differences were found among the percentages of necrosis, with higher values observed in group 1 compared with groups 2 and 3. No statistically significant differences were found among these groups using the paper template method. Group 3 presented the highest mean number of blood vessels expressing VEGF and of cells in the proliferative phase when compared with groups 1 and 2. Conclusions: LLLT was effective in increasing random skin flap viability in rats. The 670 nm laser presented more satisfactory results than the 830 nm laser.

In this paper we analyze the problem of light-matter interaction when absorptive resonances are imbedded in the material dispersion. We apply an improved approach to aluminum (Al) in the optical frequency range to investigate the impact of these resonances on the operating characteristics of Al-based nanoscale devices. Quantities such as group velocity, stored energy density, and energy velocity, normally obtained using a single resonance model [Wave Propagation and Group Velocity (Academic Press, 1960), Nat. Mater. 11, 208 (2012)], are now accurately calculated regardless of the medium adopted. We adapt the Loudon approach [Nat. Mater. 11, 208 (2012)] to media with several optical resonances and present the details of the extended model. We also show pertinent results for Al-based metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguides, around spectral resonances. The model delineated here can be applied readily to any metal accurately characterized by Drude-Lorentz spectral resonance features. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Nd:YAG and argon laser irradiations on enamel demineralization after two different models to induce artificial caries. Background data: It is believed that the use of the high-intensity laser on the dental structure can lead to a more acid-resistant surface. Materials and methods: Twenty-one extracted human third molars were sectioned into tooth quarters. The quarters were distributed in three groups: Group I (control), untreated; Group II, Nd:YAG laser (60 mJ, 15 pps, 47.77 J/cm(2), 30 sec); and Group III, argon laser (250mW, 12 J/cm(2), 48 sec). Tooth quarters from each group were subjected to two different demineralization models: cycle 1, a 14 day demineralization (pH 4.5; 6 h) and remineralization (pH 7.0; 18 h) solutions, 37 degrees C and cycle 2, 48 h in demineralization solution (pH 4.5). Samples were prepared in slices (60-100 mu m thick) to be evaluated under polarized light microscopy. Demineralization areas were measured (mm(2)) (n = 11). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). Results: Means followed by different letters are significantly different: 0.25 A (control, cycle 48 h); 0.18 AB (control, cycle 14 days); 0.17 AB (Nd:YAG, cycle 14 days); 0.14 BC (argon, cycle 48 h); 0.09 BC (Nd:YAG, cycle 48 h), and 0.06 C (argon, cycle 14 days). Conclusions: The argon laser was more effective for caries preventive treatment than Nd: YAG laser, showing a smaller demineralization area in enamel.

We analyse the dependence of the luminosity function (LF) of galaxies in groups on group dynamical state. We use the Gaussianity of the velocity distribution of galaxy members as a measurement of the dynamical equilibrium of groups identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 by Zandivarez & Martinez. We apply the Anderson-Darling goodness-of-fit test to distinguish between groups according to whether they have Gaussian or non-Gaussian velocity distributions, i.e. whether they are relaxed or not. For these two subsamples, we compute the (0.1)r-band LF as a function of group virial mass and group total luminosity. For massive groups, , we find statistically significant differences between the LF of the two subsamples: the LFs of groups that have Gaussian velocity distributions have a brighter characteristic absolute magnitude (similar to 0.3 mag) and a steeper faint-end slope (similar to 0.25). We detect a similar effect when comparing the LF of bright [M-0.1r(group) - 5log(h) < -23.5] Gaussian and non-Gaussian groups. Our results indicate that, for massive/luminous groups, the dynamical state of the system is directly related to the luminosity of its galaxy members.

The automatic disambiguation of word senses (i.e., the identification of which of the meanings is used in a given context for a word that has multiple meanings) is essential for such applications as machine translation and information retrieval, and represents a key step for developing the so-called Semantic Web. Humans disambiguate words in a straightforward fashion, but this does not apply to computers. In this paper we address the problem of Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) by treating texts as complex networks, and show that word senses can be distinguished upon characterizing the local structure around ambiguous words. Our goal was not to obtain the best possible disambiguation system, but we nevertheless found that in half of the cases our approach outperforms traditional shallow methods. We show that the hierarchical connectivity and clustering of words are usually the most relevant features for WSD. The results reported here shed light on the relationship between semantic and structural parameters of complex networks. They also indicate that when combined with traditional techniques the complex network approach may be useful to enhance the discrimination of senses in large texts. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2012

Increased plasma osmolality by food intake evokes augmentation of plasma oxytocin (OT). Ovarian steroids may also influence the balance of body fluids by acting on OT neurones. Our aim was to determine if estrogen influences the activity of OT neurones in paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and supraoptic nucleus (SON) under different osmotic situations. Ovariectomized rats (OVX) were treated with either estradiol (E-2) or vehicle and were divided into three groups: group I was fed ad libitum, group II underwent 48 h of fasting, and group III was refed after 48 h of fasting. On the day of the experiment, blood samples were collected to determine the plasma osmolality and OT. The animals were subsequently perfused, and OT/FOS immunofluorescence analysis was conducted on neurones in the PVN and the SON. When compared to animals which were fasted or fed ad libitum, the plasma osmolality of refed animals was higher, regardless of whether they were treated with vehicle or E-2. We observed neural activation of OT cells in vehicle-or E-2-treated OVX rats refed after 48 h of fasting, but not in animals fed ad libitum or in animals that only underwent 48 h of fasting. Finally, the percentage of neurones that co-expressed OT and FOS was lower in both the PVN and the SON of animals treated with E-2 and refed, when compared to vehicle-treated animals. These results suggest that E-2 may have an inhibitory effect on OT neurones and may modulate the secretion of OT in response to the increase of osmolality induced by refeeding. Chronic periodontitis (CP) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are complex inflammatory conditions. Higher levels of MMP-1 were found in fluids and gingival tissues from CP patients and in the blood and tissues from ESRD patients. MMP1-1607 (1G/2G) is a functional polymorphism, as it alters MMP-1 expression. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the MMP1-1607 (1G/2G) polymorphism with CP and ESRD and evaluate differences in transcript levels between the groups. Design: A total of 254 individuals were divided into four groups: Group 1, without CP and without chronic kidney disease (CKD) (n = 67); Group 2, with CP and without CKD (n = 60); Group 3, without CP and with CKD stages (ESRD) (n = 52), and Group 4, with CP and with ESRD (n = 75). The MMP1-1607 polymorphism was analysed by PCR-RFLP. MMP1 gene transcripts from gingival tissues were analysed by real-time PCR. Results: No association was found between the MMP1-1607 polymorphism and CP or ESRD. Increased levels of MMP1 transcripts were observed in CP patients with or without ESRD. No differences were observed in the transcript levels according to the genotypes. Conclusion: It was concluded that the MMP1-1607 polymorphism was not associated with either CP or ESRD. However, higher levels of MMP1 gene transcripts were found at gingival sites of CP in patients both with and without ESRD. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the platelet count, coagulation time and platelet activity in dogs experimentally infected with Rangelia vitalii during the acute phase of the disease. For this study, 12 young dogs (females) were used, separated in two groups. Group A (uninfected control) was composed by healthy dogs (n=5), and group B consisted of R. vitalii-infected animals (n=7). After being inoculated with R. vitalii-infected blood, animals were monitored by blood smear examinations, which showed intra-erythrocytic forms of the parasite five days post-inoculation (PI). Blood samples were collected on days 0, 10, 20 and 30 PI. The material collected was placed in tubes containing EDTA for quantification of platelets, citrate anticoagulant platelet aggregation, and measuring the clotting time. Right after blood collection on days 10 and 20 PI, dogs were anesthetized for collecting bone marrow samples. A significant reduction (P<0.01) of the number of platelets was observed in R. vitalii-infected blood, when compared with uninfected dogs on days 10 and 20 PI. Additionally, macro-platelets were observed only in infected dogs. Prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time did not differ between infected and uninfected dogs. The megakaryocyte count increased (P<0.01) significantly in infected dogs when compared with uninfected ones on days 10 and 20 PI. Platelet aggregation decreased (P<0.01) significantly in infected dogs in comparison to the control on days 10 and 20 PI. Therefore, rangeliosis in dogs causes a severe thrombocytopenia during the acute phase of infection. This platelets reduction probably occurred due to splenic sequestration and/or immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objective: To test the null hypothesis: Subjects with isolated complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) show no differences in overall frequency of tooth agenesis (hypodontia), comparing a subsample with cleft-side maxillary lateral incisor (MxI2) agenesis to a subsample without cleftside MxI2 agenesis. Findings could clarify the origins of cleft-side MxI2 agenesis. Materials and Methods: Tooth agenesis was identified from dental radiographs of 141 subjects with UCLP. The UCLP cohort was segregated into four categories according to the status and location of MxI2 in the region of the unilateral cleft: group M: subjects with one tooth, located on the mesial side of the alveolar cleft; group D: subjects with one tooth, located on the distal side of the alveolar cleft; group MD: subjects with two teeth present, one mesial and one distal to the cleft; and group ABS: subjects with lateral incisor absent (agenesis) in the cleft area. Results: The null hypothesis was rejected. Among UCLP subjects, there was a twofold increase (P < .0008) in overall frequency of tooth agenesis outside the cleft region in a subsample with cleftside MxI2 agenesis (ABS), compared to a subsample presenting with no agenesis of the cleft-side MxI2 (M+D+MD). Conclusions: Cleft-side MxI2 agenesis in CLP subjects appears to be largely a genetically controlled anomaly associated with cleft development, rather than a collateral environmental consequence of the adjacent cleft defect, since increased hypodontia involving multiple missing teeth observed remote from a cleft clearly has a significant genetic basis. PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of cilostazol, in kidney and skeletal muscle of rats submitted to acute ischemia and reperfusion. METHODS: Fourty three animals were randomized and divided into two groups. Group I received a solution of cilostazol (10 mg/Kg) and group II received saline solution 0.9% (SS) by orogastric tube after ligature of the abdominal aorta. After four hours of ischemia the animals were divided into four subgroups: group IA (Cilostazol): two hours of reperfusion. Group IIA (SS): two hours of reperfusion. Group IB (Cilostazol): six hours of reperfusion. Group IIB (SS) six hours of reperfusion. After reperfusion, a left nephrectomy was performed and removal of the muscles of the hind limb. The histological parameters were studied. In kidney cylinders of myoglobin, vacuolar degeneration and acute tubular necrosis. In muscle interstitial edema, inflammatory infiltrate, hypereosinophilia fiber, cariopicnose and necrosis. Apoptosis was assessed by immunohistochemistry for cleaved caspase-3 and TUNEL. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference between groups. CONCLUSION: Cilostazol had no protective effect on the kidney and the skeletal striated muscle in rats submitted to acute ischemia and reperfusion in this model.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of ultrasonic activation of calcium hydroxide (CH) pastes on pH and calcium release in simulated external root resorptions. Methods: Forty-six bovine incisors had their canals cleaned and instrumented, and defects were created in the external middle third of the roots, which were then used for the study. The teeth were externally made impermeable, except for the defected area, and divided into the following 4 groups containing 10 samples each according to the CH paste and the use or not of the ultrasonic activation: group 1: propylene glycol without ultrasonic activation, group 2: distilled water without ultrasonic activation, group 3: propylene glycol with ultrasonic activation, and group 4: distilled water with ultrasonic activation. After filling the canals with the paste, the teeth were restored and individually immersed into flasks with ultrapure water. The samples were placed into other flasks after 7, 15, and 30 days so that the water pH level could be measured by means of a pH meter. Calcium release was measured by means of an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Six teeth were used as controls. The results were statistically compared using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests (P < .05). Results: For all periods analyzed, the pH level was found to be higher when the CH paste was activated with ultrasound. Calcium release was significantly greater (P < .05) using ultrasonic activation after 7 and 30 days. Conclusions: The ultrasonic activation of CH pastes favored a higher pH level and calcium release in simulated external root resorptions. (J Endod 2012;38:834-837)
