This work reports theoretical and experimental studies on the first hyperpolarizability (beta) of aminophenols, evaluating the influence of the NH(2) group position relative to the OH group on the hyperpolarizability. A new extension of hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique using picosecond pulse trains was employed to obtain the experimental absolute values of (beta). The theoretical static beta(0) values were calculated using AMI method implemented in the AMPAC program. The theoretical and experimental data show a clear dependence between beta and the relative position of the electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) groups, presenting the 2-aminophenol the higher values. Moreover, calculations show excellent qualitative agreement between theoretical and experimental data, which are improved when the simulations considering the solvated molecule in a combination of discrete solvent molecules interacting with the solute and the application of continuous dielectric model. Besides, the study indicates that the experimental hyperpolarizabilities seem to be a property of the solute-solvation shell system. These facts have affirmed that the theoretical approach employed can be successfully used to foresee the variation in beta due to modifications in the D/A position. Moreover, a theoretical study of the ground state absorption is performed and compared with experimental data. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we used the conversion process of a precursor polymer into polyparaphenylenevinylene (PPV) at low temperatures in order to control the effective conjugation degree of spin-casted PPV films. The absorption and emission spectra of the films were studied by following a partial substitution of chloride counterions from poly(xylylidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT), used as a precursor, by sodium acid dodecyl benzenesulfonate (DBS), added as a surfactant salt. Upon controlling the DBS amount and conversion temperature (T-c) of PTHT/DBS to PPV films, the band gap of PPV changed from 409 to 506 nm, and 505 to 532 nm, values obtained from absorbance and emission measurements, respectively. Based on these experimental data, we proposed a physical model which represents the chemical structure of PPV as a distribution of conjugated chain segments (like oligomers) alternated by non-conjugated segments (structural defects and/or from the precursor polymer). The solvatochromism and other spectroscopic and photophysical characteristics of four azo disperse dyes, derived from 2-amino-5-nitrothiazole, were evaluated and interpreted with the aid of experimental data and quantum mechanical calculations. For the non-substituted compound two conformers, E and Z, were proposed for the isolated molecules, being the second one considerably less stable. The optimization of these structures in combination with a SCRF methodology (IEFPCM, Simulating the molecules in a continuum dielectric with characteristics of methanol), suggests that the Z form is not stable in solution. This same behaviour is expected for the substituted compounds, which is corroborated by experimental data presented in previous investigations [A.E.H. Machado, L.M. Rodrigues, S. Gupta, A.M.F. Oliveira-Campos, A.M.S. Silva, J. Mol. Struct. 738 (2005) 239-245]. For the substituted compounds, two forms derived from E conformer (A and R) are possible. Quantum mechanical data suggest for the isolated molecules, that the low energy absorption hand of the E conformers involve at least two close electronic states. having the low-lying excited state a (1)(n,pi*) nature, and being the S-2 state attributed to a (1)(pi,pi*) transition. The data also suggest a small energy gap between the absorption peaks of A and B, related to the easy conversion between these forms. For the structures optimized in combination with the applied SCRF methodology, an states inversion is observed for the Substituted compounds, with a considerable diminish of the energy gap between A and B absorption peaks. The electronic spectra of these compounds are quite sensitive to changes in the solvent polarity. The positive solvatochromism is more evident in aprotic solvents, probably due to the polarization induced by the solute. These compounds do not fluoresce at 298 K, but present a small but perceptible fluorescence at 77 K, which seems to be favoured by the nature of the group in the 2 `-position of the phenyl ring. Moreover, such compounds present expressive values for first hyperpolarizability, which implies in good non-linear optics (NLO) responses and photoswitching capability. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. A Li(2)O-B(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3) glass system, un-doped and doped with LiF, and/or TiO(2) was synthesized by the fusion method and its physical properties were investigated by thermoluminescence (TL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The samples were subjected to gamma-rays from a colbalt-60 ((60)Co) source. These techniques provided evidence of LiF and LiF doped with Ti crystal formation in the glass system. A TL glow peak at about 433 K was sensitive to (60)Co gamma-rays and showed good linearity with doses and consequently could be used to quantify radiation doses. The fabrication of controlled molecular architectures is essential for organic devices, as is the case of emission of polarized light for the information industry. In this study, we show that optimized conditions can be established to allow layer-by-layer (LbL) films of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV)+dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) to be obtained with anisotropic properties. Films with five layers and converted at 110 degrees C had a dichroic ratio delta = 2.3 and order parameter r = 34%, as indicated in optical spectroscopy and emission ellipsometry data. This anisotropy was decreased with the number of layers deposited, with delta = 1.0 for a 75-layer LbL PPV + DBS film. The analysis with atomic force microscopy showed the formation of polymer clusters in a random growth process with the normalized height distribution being represented by a Gaussian function. In spite of this randomness in film growth, the self-covariance function pointed to a correlation between clusters, especially for thick films. In summary, the LbL method may be exploited to obtain both anisotropic films with polarized emission and regular, nanostructured surfaces. (c) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report a new procedure to convert the polymer precursor poly(xylylidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT) into poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) using microwave irradiation. Spin-coated PTHT films were irradiated at room temperature under ambient conditions in a commercial microwave oven, with varying power from 20W to 100W. Complete conversion was reached within only 5 min of irradiation for powers above 50W, yielding PPV films with absorption and photoluminescence spectra that are practically indistinguishable from the spectra of thermally converted PPV films, which require ca. 2 h of a high temperature (similar to 200 degrees C) thermal treatment. In addition to a much faster conversion procedure, the irradiation with microwaves led to a red shift in the absorption spectrum of a PTHT film, which varied linearly with the time of irradiation. These films can then be used as low-cost, easy-to-use detectors of microwaves. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The discovery of an alternative route to convert poly(xylyliden tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT) into poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) using dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) has allowed the formation of ultrathin films with unprecedented control of architecture and emission properties. In this work, we show that this route may be performed with several sufonated compounds where RSO(3)(-) replaces the counter-ion (Cl(-)) of PTHT, some of which are even more efficient than DBS. Spin-coating films were produced from PTHT and azo-dye molecules, an azo-polymer and organic salts as counter-ions of PTHT. The effects of the thermal annealing step of PTHT/RSO(3)(-) films at 110 and 230 degrees C were monitored by measuring the absorption and emission spectra. The results indicate that the exchange of the counterion Cl(-) of PTHT by a linear long chain with RSO(3)(-) group is a general procedure to obtain PPV polymer at lower conversion temperature (ca. 110 degrees C) with significant increase in the emission efficiency, regardless of the chemical position and the number of sulfonate groups. With the enhanced emission caused by Congo Red and Tinopal as counter-ions, it is demonstrated that the new synthetic route is entirely generic, which may allow accurate control of conversion and emission properties. CaNb(2)O(6) single crystal fibers were grown by the laser-heated pedestal growth technique, directly from the starting reagents. Optically transparent fibers were obtained in the form of rods with elliptical cross-section, free from cracks, impurities, and secondary phases, with an average diameter of 0.4 mm and about 20 mm of length. The fibers grew within the orthorhombic Pbcn columbite structure, with the growth axis nearly parallel to the crystallographic a-direction. The parameters b and c were parallel to the shorter and larger ellipsis axes. A special setup using a microscope was developed to obtain the far-infrared reflectivity spectra of these micrometer-sized fibers, allowing the identification and assignment of 34 of the 38 polar phonons foreseen for the material. From these phonons, the intrinsic dielectric constant ( of 185 THz) could be estimated, showing the potential of the material for applications in microwave circuitry. These results, along with previous polarized Raman data (Cryst. Growth Des. 2010, 10, 1569), allow us to present a comprehensive set of optical phonon modes and to discuss the potential use of designed CaNb(2)O(6) microcrystals in compact optical devices.

We describe the assembly of layer-by-layer films based on the poly(propylene imine) dendrimer (PPID) generation 3 and nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) for application as chemically sensitive membranes in sepal alive extended-gate field effect transistor (SEGFET) pH sensors PPID/NiTsPc films wet e adsorbed on quartz, glass. indium tin oxide. or gold (Au)-covered glass substrates Multilayer formation was monitored via UV-vis absorption upon following the increment in the Q-band intensity (615 nm) of NiTsPc The nanostructured membranes were very stable in a pH range of 4-10 and displayed a good sensitivity toward H(+), ca 30 mV/pH for PPID/N(1)TsPc films deposited on Au-covered substrates For films deposited on ITO, the sensitivity was ca 52 4 mV/pH. close to the expected theoretical value for ton-sensitive membranes. The use of chemically stable PPID/NiTsPc films as gate membranes in SEGFETs, as introduced here, may represent an alternative for the fabrication of nanostructured, porous platforms for enzyme immobilization to be used in enzymatic biosensors.
From Rational Design of Drug Crystals to Understanding of Nucleic Acid Structures: Lamivudine Duplex
Resumo:
A DNA-like duplex of nucleosides is probable to exist even without the 5`-phosphate groups needed to assemble the chain backbone. However, double-stranded helical structures of nucleosides are unknown. Here, we report a duplex of nucleoside analogs that is spontaneously assembled due to stacking of the neutral and protonated molecules of lamivudine, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NTRI) widely used in anti-HIV drug combinatory medication. The left-handed lamivudine duplex has features similar to those of i-motif DNA, as the face-to-face base stacking and the helix rise per base pair. Furthermore, the protonation pattern on alternate bases expected for it DNA-like duplex stabilized by pairing of neutral and protonated cytosine fragments was observed for the first time in the lamivudine double-stranded helix. This structure demonstrates that hydrogen bonds can substitute for covalent phosphodiester linkage in the stabilization of the duplex backbone. This interesting example of spontaneous molecular self-organization indicates that the 5`-phosphate group could not be a requirement for duplex assembly.

A rational strategy was employed for design of an orthorhombic structure of lamivudine with maleic acid. On the basis of the lamivudine saccharinate structure reported in the literature, maleic acid was chosen to synthesize a salt with the anti-HIV drug because of the structural similarities between the salt formers. Maleic acid has an acid-ionization constant of the anti first proton and an arrangement of their hydrogen bonding functionalities similar to those of saccharin. Likewise, there is a saccharin-like conformational rigidity in maleic acid because of the hydrogen-bonded ring formation and the Z-configuration around the C=C double bond. As was conceivably predicted, lamivudine maleate assembles into a structure whose intermolecular architecture is related to that of saccharinate salt of the drug. Therefore, a molecular framework responsible for crystal assembly into a lamivudine saccharinate-like structure could be recognized in the salt formers. Furthermore, structural correlations and structure-solubility relationships were established for lamivudine maleate and saccharinate. Although there is a same molecular framework in maleic acid and saccharin, these salt formers are Structurally different in some aspects. When compared to saccharin, neither out-of-plane SO(2) oxygens nor a benzene group occur in maleic acid. Both features could be related to higher solubility of lamivudine maleate. Here, we also anticipate that multicomponent molecular crystals of lamivudine with other salt formers possessing the molecular framework responsible for crystal assembly can be engineered successfully.

Mebendazole (MBZ) is a common benzimidazole anthelmintic that exists in three different polymorphic forms, A, B, and C. Polymorph C is the pharmaceutically preferred form due to its adequated aqueous solubility. No single crystal structure determinations depicting the nature of the crystal packing and molecular conformation and geometry have been performed on this compound. The crystal structure of mebendazole form C is resolved for the first time. Mebendazole form C crystallizes in the triclinic centrosymmetric space group and this drug is practically planar, since the least-squares methyl benzimidazolylcarbamate plane is much fitted on the forming atoms. However, the benzoyl group is twisted by 31(1)degrees from the benzimidazole ring, likewise the torsional angle between the benzene and carbonyl moieties is 27(1)degrees. The formerly described bends and other interesting intramolecular geometry features were viewed as consequence of the intermolecular contacts occurring within mebendazole C structure. Among these features, a conjugation decreasing through the imine nitrogen atom of the benzimidazole core and a further resonance path crossing the carbamate one were described. At last, the X-ray powder diffractogram of a form C rich mebendazole mixture was overlaid to the calculated one with the mebendazole crystal structure. Chlortalidone (HIGROTON) is a diuretic drug widely used in antihypertensive therapy. Thus far, only two solid-state polymorphs of chlortalidone have been reported. We elucidated the structure of chlortalidone form I and a new polymorph. This new phase, namely, chlortalidone form III, was also entirely characterized. It was possible to conclude that it is a conformer with a different orientation of the chlorobenzenesulfonamide moiety. Compared to form I, it has a rotation of about 90 degrees on the axis of the C-C bond bridging the substituted phenyl and isoindolinyl rings. This conformational feature is related to the crystal packing patterns of the chlortalidone forms. Furthermore, certain intermolecular hydrogen bonds are present in both polymorphs, giving rise to ribbons with chlortalidone enantiomers alternately placed into them. The chlortalidone form I and form III crystallize in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar as racemic mixtures. Additional conformational details also differentiate the chlortalidone conformers. Slight twists on the isoindolinyl and sulfamyl groups exist. Considering all structural relationships, the fingerprint plots derived from the Hirshfeld surfaces exhibited the characteristics of the chlortalidone form I and form III crystal structures.

This work reports the structural and spectroscopy characterization of poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) films doped with neodymium (Nd) ions. Nd-PSS films were processed using the acid of poly(styrene sulfonate) - H-PSS and neodymium nitrate - Nd(NO(3))(3); the maximum incorporation of Nd ions in the polymeric matrix was equal 19.3%. The absorption in the UV-Vis-NIR spectral region presents typical electronic transitions of Nd 3, ions, with well resolved peaks. The infrared spectra present the transition bands of PSS with characteristic line shape broadening, and the presence of vibrational modes of N-O groups in the range of 1400-720 cm(-1), prove the permanence of Nd(NO(3))(x), with x = 1, 2 and/or 3. in the H-PSS matrix. UV-Vis site selective photoluminescence data indicate that the incorporation of Nd 31 introduces a blue shift in PSS emission (325-800 nm), decreasing the interaction between adjacent PSS lateral groups (aromatic rings). Nd(3+) reabsorption and energy transfer effects between the PSS matrix and Nd(3+) were also observed. The IR emission of Nd-PSS films at 1076 rim ((4)F(3/2) -> (4)I(11/2)) present constant efficiency, independent on Nd(3+) concentration. The Judd-Ofelt theory was employed to analyze radiative properties. The excitation spectra prove the energy transfer between the polymeric matrix and Nd(3+). Complex impedance data was used to probe relaxation processes during the charge transport within the polymeric matrix. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
