This article applied [HEH(HEP)] (2-ethyhexyldrogen-2-ethylhexyl phosphonate)extraction chromatography to separate 14 rare earth impurities from ultra-highly pure Er2O3 and Ho2O3, and then the impurities were determined by atomic emission spectrometry. The average percentage recovery for each element is in the range of 70%similar to 140%. The relative standard deviations of the determination are +/-3.3%similar to 2.2%. This method can be applied to the determination of the trace amounts of rare eath impurities in Er2O3 and Ho2O3 with a purity of 99.999 9%-99.999 99%.

A series of new optically active aromatic polyimides containing axially dissymmetric 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2-diyl units were prepared from optically pure (R)-(+)-or (S)-(-)-2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthalene dianhydrides and various aromatic diamines via a conventional two-step procedure that included ring-opening polycondensation and chemical cyclodehydration. The optically pure isomer of dianhydride was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution of optically pure (R)-(+)or (S)-(-)1,1'-bi-2-naphthol with 4-nitrophthalonitrile in aprotic polar solvent and subsequent hydrolysis of the resultant tetranitrile derivatives, followed by the dehydration of the corresponding tetracarboxylic acids to obtain the dianhydrides. These polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and m-cresol, etc., and have glass transition temperatures of 251-296 degrees C, and 5% weight loss occurs not lower than 480 degrees C. The specific rotations of the optically active polyimides ranged from +196 degrees to +263 degrees, and the optical stability and chiroptical properties of them were also studied. Cloud point curves reported in the literature for five representatives of the system poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polystyrene were evaluated theoretically by means of the Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory. The measured phase separation behavior can be described within experimental error using only one adjustable parameter (quantifying the interaction between the unlike mers). The Flory-Huggins interaction parameters calculated from this theoretical description depend in good approximation linearly on composition (volume fractions) and on the inverse temperature. An evaluation of these data yields a maximum heat effect which is almost one order of magnitude less (ca. -0.25 J/cm(3)) than obtained via Hess's cycle (dissolution of the components and of the blend) from calorimetric measurements. Model calculations on the basis of the present theory demonstrate that the critical points shift to a different extent upon a certain relative change in the molar mass of the blend components. The sensitivity of the calculated phase diagrams against changes in the scaling parameter decreases in the following order: interaction energies between unlike mers, differences in the scaling temperatures, pressures and densities.

The determination of benzoic acid, thiourea and 2-mercaptoethanol in three pure organic solvents, viz., chloroform, chlorobenzene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene, by using an amperometric cryohydrogel tyrosinase biosensor is described. Measurements were carried out with phenol as the enzyme substrate. Kinetic parameters (K-i and I-50) were determined in the three solvents for various inhibitors. The sensor showed the most sensitive measurements to these inhibitors in pure chloroform. The solvent-induced deviation of the biosensor to thiourea was evaluated by means of Hill coefficients. The smallest deviation as observed in 1,2-dichlorobenzene, owing to the high hydrophobicity of this solvent. The nature of the inhibition process and its reversibility mere also examined.

A novel immobilization method for construction of a tyrosinase-based biosensor applied in pure organic phase is described. This method gives the enzyme a hydrated shell which allows the enzyme to maintain its biocatalytic activity in a pure organic solvent The enzyme electrode was used to determine several phenols and o-diphenols in pure chloroform and chlorobenzene. The biosensor can be stored in dry state for more than 3 months without any loss of the activity. The kinetic parameters have also been calculated and are presented herein.

A statistical thermodynamics theory of a polydisperse polymer based on a lattice model of a fluid is formulated. The pure polydisperse polymer is completely characterized by three scale factors and the distribution law of the system. The equation of state does not satisfy a simple corresponding state principle, except for the polymer fluid with sufficiently high molecular weight.

Two approximate formulae to calculate the eigenvalues of pure quadrupole interaction in Mossbauer effect studies have been proposed and the eigenvalue coefficients in the formulae have been given for various excited states and ground states of the nucleus with different spin. All the eigenvalues of pure quadrupole interaction between both excited state and ground state of nucleus with spin I = 3/2 divided-by 9/2 and the electric-field gradient with different asymmetry parameter (eta = 0 divided-by 1.0) have been calculated by these formulae. The results show that the accuracies in all the calculations are more satisfactory or same in comparison with those obtained by the formula of Shenoy and Dunlap, especially when the asymmetry parameter of electric-field gradient is larger than 0.8 for the nucleus with spin I = 5/2.

The method for the measurement of the pure mechanical wear loss for 321 stainless steel, 1045 steel and pure iron in the study of the synergy between corrosion and wear was studied, The methods studied included the measurement in distilled water, by cathodic protection and by adding inhibitor KI, and all were compared with the wear loss in air. The experiment showed that the pure mechanical wear losses and friction coefficients obtained by the three methods were close to each other and can be used to calculate the various wear components in the study of the interaction of corrosion and wear, but the measurements in distilled water for pure iron and 1045 steel are not recommended due to their corrosion.

In the ocean, natural and artificial processes generate clouds of bubbles which scatter and attenuate sound. Measurements have shown that at the individual bubble resonance frequency, sound propagation in this medium is highly attenuated and dispersive. Theory to explain this behavior exists in the literature, and is adequate away from resonance. However, due to excessive attenuation near resonance, little experimental data exists for comparison. An impedance tube was developed specifically for exploring this regime. Using the instrument, unique phase speed and attenuation measurements were made for void fractions ranging from 6.2 × 10^−5 to 2.7 × 10^−3 and bubble sizes centered around 0.62 mm in radius. Improved measurement speed, accuracy and precision is possible with the new instrument, and both instantaneous and time-averaged measurements were obtained. Behavior at resonance was observed to be sensitive to the bubble population statistics and agreed with existing theory, within the uncertainty of the bubble population parameters. Scattering from acoustically compact bubble clouds can be predicted from classical scattering theory by using an effective medium description of the bubbly fluid interior. Experimental verification was previously obtained up to the lowest resonance frequency. A novel bubble production technique has been employed to obtain unique scattering measurements with a bubbly-liquid-filled latex tube in a large indoor tank. The effective scattering model described these measurements up to three times the lowest resonance frequency of the structure.
