Pattern formation of chevrons in the conduction regime in homeotropically aligned liquid crystals

We report on chevrons (herringbonelike patterns) observed in homeotropically aligned liquid crystals with high electric conductivity. We focus our attention on two types of chevrons observed in the conduction regime. The threshold voltage and the characteristic double periodicity of chevrons (i.e., the short wavelength lambda(1) of the striated rolls and the long wavelength lambda(2) Of the chevron bands) have been measured as functions of the applied electric frequency f. With the aid of a crossed polarizer set, we have, in addition, determined the director field which shows a periodic in-plane rotation for our chevrons (with a wavelength lambda(2)) We arrived at the types of chevrons after qualitatively different bifurcation sequences with increasing voltage. The frequency dependence of lambda(2) also shows a qualitatively different behavior with respect to the two types of chevrons. The experimental results are discussed in terms of recent theoretical investigations.

Structure of Adenine on Metal Nanoparticles: pH Equilibria and Formation of Ag+ Complexes Detected by Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

The SERS spectra of adenine recorded under a broad range of pH values and concentrations using both silver and gold colloids provided evidence for the existence of several distinct species. At high concentration (0.5-10 ppm), the spectra recorded between pH 1 and 11 showed only two distinct spectra, rather than the three forms that would be expected for a compound with two pK(a) values of 4.2 and 9.8. PicSOr - An objective test of perceptual skill that predicts laparoscopic technical skill in three initial studies of laparoscopic performance

Background: Laparoscopic surgery requires surgeons to infer the shape of 3-D structures, such as the internal organs of patients, from 2-D displays on a video monitor. Recent evidence indicates that the issue is not resolved by the use of contemporary 3-D camera systems. It is therefore crucial to find ways of measuring differences in aptitude for recovering 3-D structure from 2-D images, and assessing its impact on performance. Our aim was to test empirically for a relationship between laparoscopic ability and the perceptual skill of recovering information about 3-D structures from 2-D monitor displays.

Influence of the anion on the electrical conductivity and glass formation of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids

Six ionic liquids based on the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation have been studied. As anions Cl-, Br-, I-, [NCS](-), [N(CN)(2)](-), and [BF4](-) were selected. The electrical conductivities were determined between 173 and 393 K based on impedance measurements in the frequency range from 0.1 to 10(7) Hz. The electrical conductivity increases, whereas the glass transition temperature, the fragility, and the low temperature activation energy decrease with increasing anion size. The results can be understood from the changing anion-cation interaction strength with changing anion size and from the energy landscape interpretation of the glass transition dynamics.
