Nove cultivares ('Taishowase', 'Tiodowase', 'Tamatsukuri', 'Isumo', 'Okuni', 'Moriwase', 'Kinshu', 'Senri' e 'Ibuki') e duas seleções ('KM-2' e 'KM-1') de castanheiro híbrido (Castanea crenata x Castanea sp.) foram analisadas em São Bento do Sapucaí-SP. Avaliaram-se o início e o término da colheita, a deiscência do fruto e a deiscência, as propriedades físicas, tais como dimensões e massas dos frutos e castanhas, além do formato das castanhas e a poliembrionia, e ainda as propriedades químicas e a composição mineral. Os dados apresentados indicam que as cultivares e seleções diferem quanto à deiscência dos frutos. A colheita das castanhas concentra-se entre a primeira quinzena de novembro e a segunda quinzena de abril. Algumas cultivares apresentaram reduzido número de castanhas dentro da cápsula, o que indica falta de sincronia no período de floração. Há diferença na constituição química das castanhas entre as cultivares e seleções. As castanhas analisadas possuem alta quantidade de proteínas e açúcares totais, baixa quantidade de sódio e extrato etérico, indicando que o amido é a principal substância de reservas das castanhas, das cultivares e seleções analisadas.

As cochonilhas-com-escudo (Hemiptera, Diaspididae) têm causado prejuízos significativos à cultura da videira no Rio Grande do Sul, principalmente em Vitis labrusca L. da cv. Niágara. No período de setembro de 2009 a outubro de 2011, foi realizado um inventário das espécies de Diaspididae ocorrentes no tronco das videiras e dos parasitoides associados. Foram avaliadas 32 propriedades localizadas nos municípios de Bento Gonçalves, Caxias do Sul, Flores da Cunha e Sarandi-RS. A espécie mais frequente e abundante foi Hemiberlesia lataniae (Signoret, 1869). Melanaspis arnaldoi (Costa Lima, 1924) e Pseudaonidia marquesi Costa Lima, 1924 foram registradas pela primeira vez em V. labrusca. Todas as espécies de cochonilhas apresentaram perfurações nos escudos indicando níveis de parasitismo natural que variaram de 11,3 a 76,5% para H. lataniae, de 9 a 58,8% para M. arnaldoi e de 3,4 a 22,2% para P. marquesi. As seguintes associações entre parasitoides e cochonilhas foram encontradas: Encarsia sp. (Aphelinidae), Plagiomerus sp. (Encyrtidae), Amitus sp. (Platygastridae) e o hiperparasitoide Chartocerus sp. (Signiphoridae) a H. lataniae; Homalopoda sp. (Encyrtidae) a P. marquesi e Chartocerus sp. a M. arnaldoi. Amitus sp., Homalopoda sp. e Chartocerus sp. foram associados pela primeira vez com estes diaspidídeos.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a contribuição da ultra-sonografia abdominal em um grupo de pacientes em seguimento pós-tratamento de câncer primário da mama. MATERIAL E MÉTODOS: Foram analisados, retrospectivamente, os resultados dos exames ecográficos abdominais em 100 prontuários de pacientes tratadas de câncer primário da mama, realizados de janeiro a dezembro de 1997, no Setor de Ultra-sonografia da Divisão de Radiologia do Departamento de Clínica Médica da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo. Informações como idade, tipo histológico, estadiamento, número e resultados dos exames ultra-sonográficos foram tabelados e analisados. RESULTADOS: Em 70% dos casos os laudos ecográficos abdominais eram normais. O diagnóstico de metástase hepática foi de 3%. CONCLUSÃO: O maior porcentual de alterações encontradas não estava relacionado diretamente como complicação do câncer mamário.

An automatic dispenser based on a flow-injection system used to introduce sample and analytical solution into an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer through a spray chamber is proposed. Analytical curves were constructed after the injection of 20 to 750 µL aliquots of a multielement standard solution (20.0 µg L-1 in Li, Be, Al, V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Sr, Ag, Cd, Ba, Tl, Pb) and the acquisition of the integrated transient signals. The linear concentration range could be extended to ca. five decades. The performance of the system was checked by analyzing a NIST 1643d reference material. Accuracy could be improved by the proper selection of the injected volume. Besides good precision (r.s.d. < 2%), the results obtained with the proposed procedure were closer to the certified values of the reference material than those obtained by direct aspiration or by injecting 125 µL of several analytical solutions and samples.

An automatic system for the direct determination of lead and tin by atomic absorption spectrometry is described. The on-line treatment of the metallic samples was obtained by anodic electrodissolution in a flow injection system. Lead was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and tin by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). A computer program managed the current source and the solenoid valves that direct the fluids. Good linear correlations between absorbance and current intensity for lead and tin were observed. Results were in agreement with the certified values. Precision was always better than 5%. The recommended procedure allows the direct determination of 60 or 30 elements/h using FAAS or GFAAS, respectively.

This study presents an automated system for potentiometric determination of free and total cyanide which employs a homogeneous membrane tubular ion-selective electrode. After the electrode is assembled, it is connected to a system composed of 3 three-way solenoid valves, sample line, carrier line, acid stream, and gas diffusion chamber. A Turbo Pascal® computer program, developed specifically for this task, automatically performs all the steps involved in data acquisition and processing. The proposed analytical procedure offers operational simplicity, since detection is performed by a tubular electrode, whose assembly is fast and easy. The system has shown reproducibility (r.s.d. < 0.5%, n=6) and high speed (30 readings/hour); it is efficient for determination of free and total cyanide in waste waters of starch processing plants. The detection limit was 1.2x10-5 and 1.5x10-5 mol L-1, for determination of free and total cyanide, respectively. The linear response range was between 1.2x10-5 and 1.0x10-2 mol L-1 for free cyanide and between 1.5x10-5 and 1.0x10-2 for total cyanide.

Anodic electrodissolution procedure in a flow injection system for determination of constituents in alloys is discussed. This approach implement sample preparation procedure by using a chamber and a DC power supply with constant direct current. Solid sample was attached to chamber as anode. In this review a general overview of these procedure is presented. The procedure presented a good performance characterized by a high sample throughput determinations, good accuracy and relative standard deviation.

European Directive (98/83/CE), compulsory after 2008, states that bromate in drinking water must be controlled at levels below 10 mg L-1. Supporting implementation of the Directive, the European Comission has established project SMT4-CT96 2134, in collaboration with various european institutions, aiming at the identification of the interferents to the current analytical method (Ionic Chromatography with Conductimetric Detection - IC/CD), their removal and the automation of pre-treatment and injection steps, as well as the development of alternative methods. EPAL, responsible for the water supply to a great deal of Portuguese regions, has taken steps to meet these requirements. Although not part of such project, this work (the result of a project conducted under a protocol of collaboration between EPAL SA and FCUL - Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon), reports on studies of usefulness to laboratories planning to monitor bromate in ozone treated waters, in conditions different from those described in EPA 300.1. Simultaneous determination of bromide is justified by its role as bromate precursor.

The atomization behavior of Au, Ag, Bi, Cd, Pb, and Sn from pyrolitic graphite coating (L'vov platform) with the use Pd and Mg solutions, and zirconium coated platform with the analytes in nitric acid 0.2% v/v and in ethanol was investigated. In ethanol medium, the sensitivity gain was three-fold for Bi and Cd using Zr as modifier. Without modifier, the ethanol medium is appropriate only for Au and Cd. In nitric acid medium, the Zr coated platform elevates sensitivity at least two-fold for Bi and Cd. The method was applied to the determination of Ag, Au and Bi of certified steel samples, after on-line preconcentration, sorption on a minicolumn filled with C-18 bonded to silica gel and elution with ethanol. The concentrations obtained agreed with the recommended values.

In atmospheric aerosol sampling, it is inevitable that the air that carries particles is in motion, as a result of both externally driven wind and the sucking action of the sampler itself. High or low air flow sampling speeds may lead to significant particle size bias. The objective of this work is the validation of measurements enabling the comparison of species concentration from both air flow sampling techniques. The presence of several outliers and increase of residuals with concentration becomes obvious, requiring non-parametric methods, recommended for the handling of data which may not be normally distributed. This way, conversion factors are obtained for each of the various species under study using Kendall regression.

Desde el s. XVIII todas las ciudades se plantean uno de los cambios fundamentales en la estructura de su paisaje. El aumento de población y de actividad económica conlleva la desaparición de las calles térreas y su sustitución por las calles que segregan la acera, convertida en la estructura de soporte de los servicios, de la calzada como espacio de circulación rodada. En Lisboa se extiende la pavimentación de la calzad a según el 'systema Portuguez' con piedras irregulares de basalto sobre arena y ya en 1834, se configura el 'Pelouro das Calçadas' responsable de experimentar, primero, el sistema 'macadam' (c. 1839) y, posterior y paulatinamente, de introducir el asfalto. º La acera, es tratada con losas de calcáreo que, sobre todo, a partir del último tercio de siglo serán substituidas por el 'empedrado ordinario á portuguesa' en piedra calcárea. Una derivación será el 'empedrado dito de mosaico'. Experimentado por Eusebio Pinheiro Furtado en el Castillo de São Jorge (1842), va a extenderse por la ciudad, especialmente, desde la pavimentación del 'Mar Largo' en el Rossio (1848). Así, con ocasión de la ampliación de las aceras del largo de Camões, Augusto César dos Santos, Inspector da Admistração das Calçadas expresa la política de substitución del enlosado por el empedrado 'O sistema a empregar no empedramento destos passeios, deverá ser mozaico, não só pela beleza que apresenta, como por ser uma especialidade nesta cidade, beleza que se pode levar ao efeito escolhendose um padrão simples que pela sua importância não exceda os 500‐600$ o metro superficial' (Cesar dos Santos 1869). Finalmente, en 1895 la Câmara Municipal decretará el uso del 'empedrado á portuguesa' en toda nueva pavimentación y reconstrucción de las aceras. Los sitios representativos de la ciudad se cualifican artísticamente con este modo de hacer tan característico e identitario, no en vano lo podríamos entender como una de las primeras producciones de arte público en el sentido contemporáneo del término. Este sistema de pavimentación se extiende por Portugal y se internacionaliza en España, cuando Júlio César Augusto Cordeiro patenta en Madrid (1895) el 'mosaico portugués' que cristalizará en las aceras laterales del Paseo de San Juan en Barcelona (1896) -antes de la Exposición de París de 1900, de la praça de São Sebastião de Manaus, de las avenidas Rio Branco y Atlántica de Río de Janeiro- llegando a convivir con las farolas modernitas que Pere Falqués diseñó para el 'Cincd'oros' barcelonés. La calçada á portuguesa forma parte de la identidad de Lisboa y afecta a la imagen de marca de la ciudad. Sin embargo, a pesar de su valor identitario y artístico, la calçada está en peligro de muerte. El pavimento -forma entre ellos la 'calçada-forma' está en la base de algunas de las operaciones emblemáticas de construcción de la imagen de la ciudad (La Habana, 1928; Alicante, 1957; las Ramblas de Barcelona, 1969; la reforma de la Avenida Atlántica de Río por Burle Marx, 1970). Sin embargo, estas mismas operaciones demuestran que la 'forma-calçada' no responde a muchos de los requisitos de economía, seguridad o accesibilidad universal que exige la ciudad contemporánea. En el artículo planteamos analizar los motivos y razones que planean sobre la muerte anunciada de la calçada á portuguesa.

Chromatography is a means of separating mixtures into their several components. TLC, mainly a liquid/solid process, is one of the separation techniques most often used. It is indispensable in laboratories dealing with natural products, organic and analytical chemistry. Commercial chromatography plates are offered at relatively high cost. In this work the construction of a hand-operated plate coater of stationary phases of low cost and good reproducibility is described to be used in teaching laboratories and research.

The chemical investigation of Salacia elliptica allowed to the isolation of 20 constituents: two polyols, one xanthone, a mixture of long chain hydrocarbons, one carboxylic acid, one polymer, two steroidal compounds, one aromatic ester and eleven pentacyclic triterpenes. These triterpenes include 3β-stearyloxy-oleanane, 3β-stearyloxy-ursane, one seco-friedelane, and eight compounds of the friedelane serie. The chemical structure and the relative configuration of a new triterpene 1,3-dioxo-16α-hydroxyfriedelane (15) were established through ¹H and 13C NMR including 2D experiments (HMBC, HMQC, COSY and NOESY) and herein reported for the first time.

Mercury (Hg) occurs in the environment as a natural and anthropogenic element, and through the years the accumulation of mercury has affected the integrity of ecosystems and human health. This study presents a screening of microorganisms resistant to organic and inorganic mercury, the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration of Hg, the estimation of the mercury volatilization by selected microorganisms and the dynamics of volatilization. Eight Gram-negative bacteria resistant to high concentrations of mercury (60 to 210 mg L-1) were selected, and these isolates showed ability to volatilize the metal. The dynamics of the volatilization of the Proteus mirabilis M50C demonstrated that in only 4 h of incubation it was possible to volatilize 72% of the mercury present in the culture. The results showed promising application for bioremediation strategies.
