In this doctoral thesis a methodology was developed to fully apply the corpus-based approach to simultaneous interpreting research. DIRSI-C is a parallel (Italian-English/English-Italian) and aligned electronic corpus, containing transcripts of recorded medical international conferences with professional simultaneous interpreters working both from and into their foreign language. Against this backdrop, directionality represents the research parameter used to analyze interpreters' performance by means of corpus linguistics tools.

The aim of this dissertation is to show the power of contrastive analysis in successfully predicting the errors a language learner will make by means of a concrete case study. First, there is a description of what language transfer is and why it is important in the matter of second language acquisition. Second, a brief explanation of the history and development of contrastive analysis will be offered. Third, the focus of the thesis will move to an analysis of errors usually made by language learners. To conclude, the dissertation will focus on the concrete case study of a Russian learner of English: after an analysis of the errors the student is likely to make, a recorded conversation will be examined.

This study explores comics as an educational tool in teaching Italian as a foreign language, and shows that, in this perspective, the potential of this medium goes beyond the idea that pictures can help to understand words. Comics has to be understood as a unified text, where it is precisely the combination of pictures and words that promotes the development of the students' linguistic and communicative competences. The general educational potential of comics is analyzed in Chapter 1, with a focus on the notions of closure, cartooning and here and now, which are in harmony with the application of ludic teaching theories; an analysis then follows on the features of comics that can be exploited in the field of language teaching; finally a description is provided of the linguistic competences whose development can be favored by comics. Emphasis was placed only on those competences that are most affected by the context of use, i.e, lexical, textual, pragmatic and (inter-)cultural competences. In Chapter 2, three Italian comic books are analyzed with an eye to their use as teaching material in three ideally homogeneous classes, respectively belonging to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language A2, B2 and C2 levels. The cognitive processes carried out by students to achieve a global understanding of each book are postulated both for picture-to-picure and picture-to-word relations. After an overview of the main planning phases of a language-learning pathway, the educational approach adopted in Chapter 3 places the students at the core of the learning process, and emphasizes the need for a cooperative and interactional relationship between learners and teachers. In Chapter 4, three hypothetical learning pathways are described. Their main goal is to develop the linguistic and communicative competences of the students, who would then be able to understand and produce text not merely as learners, but rather as readers, hence users of an Italian cultural product.

While functional changes linked to second language learning have been subject to extensive investigation, the issue of learning-dependent structural plasticity in the fields of bilingualism and language comprehension has so far received less notice. In the present study we used voxel-based morphometry to monitor structural changes occurring within five months of second language learning. Native English-speaking exchange students learning German in Switzerland were examined once at the beginning of their stay and once about five months later, when their German language skills had significantly increased. We show that structural changes in the left inferior frontal gyrus are correlated with the increase in second language proficiency as measured by a paper-and-pencil language test. Contrary to the increase in proficiency and grey matter, the absolute values of grey matter density and second language proficiency did not correlate (neither on first nor on second measurement). This indicates that the individual amount of learning is reflected in brain structure changes, regardless of absolute proficiency.

A successful actor often requires a specific acting method or style to enhance their performance. Through theatrical research, rehearsal and performance, an actor can narrow down their seemingly endless search for the most productive methodology. By researching, studying, and applying the methods of Constantin Stanislavski, Stella Adler, and Tadashi Suzuki to my rehearsal process, I have found my most effective acting style: Stella Adler?s method. I utilize this acting method during the performance period of my early professional acting career. Experimental research for this thesis was completed inthe studio. I applied each of the three aforementioned methods to a dramatic/classical monologue. The results I gathered helped me to decide upon Adler?s methodology to carry with me through my upcoming professional auditions and career. From casting resulting from the auditions, I will employ the methodology to my professional work asan actress. Each acting teacher has provided the performance world with a new way to experience their stage time. The methods are unique and enable the actor to find the most dynamic performance through engaging technical skill.

This article proposes an interactional approach to the question of Russian language maintenance through the activity of bedtime story-reading in Russian-French bilingual families in French speaking Switzerland. Reading stories appears to be a language maintenance strategy commonly employed by the Russian speaking parent. The ritual and recreational moment of story-reading therefore becomes an opportunity for language learning. Drawing upon a language socialization perspective, this paper proposes an interactional analysis of the language use in the activity of story-reading. It shows how the language choice of the participants may be requested, negotiated and challenged during the interaction. The analysis further informs us about the language choice pattern and the bilingual competences in these families. We will gain insight into (Russian) language maintenance as a daily social and linguistic practice.

The author perceives endogenous development as a social learning process, which is constructed by all actors involved. To enhance social learning, a methodology called Autodidactic Learning for sustainability is used, in which the perception of both local actors and external actors are highlighted. Reflecting on differences, conflicts and common interests leads to highly motivated debate and shared reflection, which is almost identical with social learning, and flattens the usual hierarchy between local and external actors. The article shows that the energies generated through collective learning can trigger important technical, social and political changes, which take into account the multiple dimensions of local reality.

This paper explores the relation between society, family, and learning. In particular, it addresses the features of home literacy environments in low income families and their impact on children's pre-literacy skills and knowledge. Sixty-two four/five-year-old children and their mothers were randomly selected for this study. The mothers were interviewed using an adaptation of a family literacy environment survey (Whitehurst, 1992). The children were assessed with specific tests to examine the scope of their 'early literacy'. The results revealed significant variability in the features and practices of home literacy environments as well as in the children's emerging pre-literacy skills and knowledge. The correlation between the two variables shows low to moderate statistical significance. The implications of such findings are discussed. Additionally, the purpose of isolating relevant features of the children and their home environments is to identify specific indicators related to the literacy fostering process. Ultimately, the goal is to design adequate, timely, and systematic intervention strategies aimed at preventing difficulties related to written language learning in children that could be considered at risk.

ABSTRACT The acquisition of intercultural communicative competence in Foreign Language (FL) and / or Languages for Specific Purposes teaching (LSP) must be a conscious and explicit learning to develop knowledge, skills and positive attitudes through contact with the target culture/s. The overall objective of this thesis is to assist the development of the intercultural communicative competence of the student of Spanish for Business (SB) through the audit of the teaching textbooks published in the last decade through a multidisciplinary approach to teaching LSP. The audit was carried out in order to ascertain the underlying approach and course design for the development of the intercultural communicative competence; to state the methodological approach to culture, language-and-culture relationship, culture teaching, culture acquisition and course design. To achieve this objective, the work has been divided into four parts: 1) review of the background on teaching the intercultural component and the analysis of materials in a courses of LSP through a multidisciplinary approach, 2) configuration of a theoretical construct allowing to select the object of study, to design the analytical instrument and to have an evaluative framework, together with the selection of a corpus of Spanish for Business textbooks, 3) development of the analytical instrument and 4) application of the analytical instrument and audit of selected textbooks. The results show that, in the textbooks analyzed, dominated a traditional view of culture, a low ratio treatment of the language-and-culture relationship, a partial implementation of the pedagogical principles for the acquisition of intercultural communicative competence; poor treatment of specific intercultural skills in business interactions, and partial coverage of the general cultural skills, which focus primarily on the acquisition of theoretical knowledge. Abstract The main objective of this Project has been to facilitate a multimedia resource for learning in English the basic concepts related to circuit analysis. The final product is directly addressed to the undergraduate students at a Telecommunications School, the EUITT from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Learning technical notions directly in English serves the students to reach the double purpose of not only acquiring a number of new concepts but also improving their proficiency in the foreign language or keeping up with their level of English through their studies. The project has several sections. There is a didactic section which explains the basic concepts using videos and images in order to approach the subject with ease and interest. This part is supplemented with a glossary in alphabetic order provided with the phonetics of the English words and some multimedia exercises for practicing different skills mainly listening, reading, and using technical vocabulary in English. All these activities have been adapted to the platform Moodle so that the students results can be assessed, if convenient. On the other hand, the practical implementation of the Project has consisted of designing a website capable of including all of the points mentioned above.

This study suggests a theoretical framework for improving the teaching/ learning process of English employed in the Aeronautical discourse that brings together cognitive learning strategies, Genre Analysis and the Contemporary theory of Metaphor (Lakoff and Johnson 1980; Lakoff 1993). It maintains that cognitive strategies such as imagery, deduction, inference and grouping can be enhanced by means of metaphor and genre awareness in the context of content based approach to language learning. A list of image metaphors and conceptual metaphors which comes from the terminological database METACITEC is provided. The metaphorical terms from the area of Aeronautics have been taken from specialised dictionaries and have been categorised according to the conceptual metaphors they respond to, by establishing the source domains and the target domains, as well as the semantic networks found. This information makes reference to the internal mappings underlying the discourse of aeronautics reflected in five aviation accident case studies which are related to accident reports from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and provides an important source for designing language teaching tasks.
