A series of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) based composites were synthesized by using induced hydrolysis silylation method (IHS), surfactant precursor method, in-situ coprecipitation method, and direct silylation method. Their structures, morphologies, bonding modes and thermal stabilities can be readily adjusted by changing the parameters during preparation and drying processing of the LDHs. The characterization results show that the direct silylation reaction cannot occur between the dried LDHs and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) in an ethanol medium. However, the condensation reaction can proceed with heating process between adsorbed APS and LDHs plates. While using wet state substrates with and without surfactant and ethanol as the solvent, the silylation process can be induced by hydrolysis of APS on the surface of LDHs plates. Surfactants improve the hydrophobicity of the LDHs during the process of nucleation and crystallization, resulting in fluffy shaped crystals; meanwhile, they occupy the surface –OH positions and leave less “free –OH” available for the silylation reaction, favoring formation of silylated products with a higher population in the hydrolyzed bidentate (T2) and tridentate (T3) bonding forms. These bonding characteristics lead to spherical aggregates and tightly bonded particles. All silylated products show higher thermal stability than those of pristine LDHs.

This study demonstrates the feasibility of additive manufactured poly(3-caprolactone)/silanized tricalcium phosphate (PCL/TCP(Si)) scaffolds coated with carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA)-gelatin composite for bone tissue engineering. In order to reinforce PCL/TCP scaffolds to match the mechanical properties of cancellous bone, TCP has been modified with 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and incorporated into PCL to synthesize a PCL/TCP(Si) composite. The successful modification is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Additive manufactured PCL/TCP(Si) scaffolds have been fabricated using a screw extrusion system (SES). Compression testing demonstrates that both the compressive modulus and compressive yield strength of the developed PCL/TCP(Si) scaffolds fall within the lower ranges of mechanical properties for cancellous bone, with a compressive modulus and compressive yield strength of 6.0 times and 2.3 times of those of PCL/TCP scaffolds, respectively. To enhance the osteoconductive property of the developed PCL/TCP(Si) scaffolds, a CHA-gelatin composite has been coated onto the scaffolds via a biomimetic co-precipitation process, which is verified by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XPS. Confocal laser microscopy and SEM images reveal a most uniform distribution of porcine bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and cellsheet accumulation on the CHA-gelatin composite coated PCL/TCP(Si) scaffolds. The proliferation rate of BMSCs on the CHA-gelatin composite coated PCL/TCP(Si) scaffolds is 2.0 and 1.4 times higher compared to PCL/TCP(Si) and CHA coated PCL/TCP(Si) scaffolds, respectively, by day 10. Furthermore, the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blot analyses reveal that CHA-gelatin composite coated PCL/TCP(Si) scaffolds stimulate osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs the most compared to the other scaffolds. In vitro results of SEM, confocal microscopy and proliferation rate also show that there is no detrimental effect of GPTMS modification on biocompatibility of the scaffolds.

A novel antioxidant for the potential treatment of ischaemia was designed by incorporating an isoindoline nitroxide into the framework of the free radical scavenger edaravone. 5-(3-Methyl-pyrazol-5-ol-1-yl)-1,1,3,3-tetramethylisoindolin-2-yloxyl 7 was prepared by N-arylation of 3-methyl-5-pyrazolone with 5-iodo-1,1,3,3-tetramethylisoindoline-2-yloxyl 8 in the presence of catalytic copper(I)iodide. Evaluation of 7, its methoxyamine derivative 10 and 5-carboxy-1,1,3,3-tetramethylisoindolin-2-yloxyl (CTMIO) against edaravone 1 in ischaemic rat atrial cardiomyocytes revealed significant decreases in cell death after prolonged ischaemia for each agent; however the protective effect of the novel antioxidant 7 (showing greater than 85% reduction in cell death at 100 μM) was significantly enhanced over that of edaravone 1 alone. Furthermore, the activity for 7 was found to be equal to or greater than the potent cardioprotective agent N6-cyclopentyladenosine (CPA). The methoxyamine adduct 10 and edaravone 1 showed no difference between the extent of reduction in cell death whilst CTMIO had only a modest protective effect.

Isoindoline nitroxides are potentially useful probes for viable biological systems, exhibiting low cytotoxicity, moderate rates of biological reduction and favorable Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) characteristics. We have evaluated the anionic (5-carboxy-1,1,3,3-tetramethylisoindolin-2-yloxyl; CTMIO), cationic (5-(N,N,N-trimethylammonio)-1,1,3,3-tetramethylisoindolin-2-yloxyl iodide, QATMIO) and neutral (1,1,3,3-tetramethylisoindolin-2-yloxyl; TMIO) nitroxides and their isotopically labeled analogs ((2)H(12)- and/or (2)H(12)-(15)N-labeled) as potential EPR oximetry probes. An active ester analogue of CTMIO, designed to localize intracellularly, and the azaphenalene nitroxide 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-2,3-dihydro-2-azaphenalen-2-yloxyl (TMAO) were also studied. While the EPR spectra of the unlabeled nitroxides exhibit high sensitivity to O(2) concentration, deuteration resulted in a loss of superhyperfine features and a subsequent reduction in O(2) sensitivity. Labeling the nitroxides with (15)N increased the signal intensity and this may be useful in decreasing the detection limits for in vivo measurements. The active ester nitroxide showed approximately 6% intracellular localization and low cytotoxicity. The EPR spectra of TMAO nitroxide indicated an increased rigidity in the nitroxide ring, due to dibenzo-annulation.

In this paper, laminar natural convection flow from a permeable and isothermal vertical surface placed in non-isothermal surroundings is considered. Introducing appropriate transformations into the boundary layer equations governing the flow derives non-similar boundary layer equations. Results of both the analytical and numerical solutions are then presented in the form of skin-friction and Nusselt number. Numerical solutions of the transformed non-similar boundary layer equations are obtained by three distinct solution methods, (i) the perturbation solutions for small (ii) the asymptotic solution for large (iii) the implicit finite difference method for all where is the transpiration parameter. Perturbation solutions for small and large values of are compared with the finite difference solutions for different values of pertinent parameters, namely, the Prandtl number Pr, and the ambient temperature gradient n.

This article describes investigations into the development of supramolecular systems capable of sensing anions through either displacement type assays or molecular motion. An electron deficient naphthalene diimide thread and electron rich isophthalamide naphthohydroquinone macrocycle was shown to form a coloured pseudorotaxane assembly. Investigations into the ability of such interpenetrated systems to sense anions colorimetrically were undertaken. Anion complexation to the isophthalamide group of the macrocycle causes displacement of the naphthodiimide thread resulting in the loss of colour. The enhanced mechanically bonded binding strength between the naphthodiimide axle and the naphthohydroquinone groups of the macrocycle wheel in the corresponding rotaxane structure however, was found to negate the anion induced displacement process.

In the context of learning paradigms of identification in the limit, we address the question: why is uncertainty sometimes desirable? We use mind change bounds on the output hypotheses as a measure of uncertainty and interpret ‘desirable’ as reduction in data memorization, also defined in terms of mind change bounds. The resulting model is closely related to iterative learning with bounded mind change complexity, but the dual use of mind change bounds — for hypotheses and for data — is a key distinctive feature of our approach. We show that situations exist where the more mind changes the learner is willing to accept, the less the amount of data it needs to remember in order to converge to the correct hypothesis. We also investigate relationships between our model and learning from good examples, set-driven, monotonic and strong-monotonic learners, as well as class-comprising versus class-preserving learnability.
