Evidence Algorithm and Processing Formalized Mathematical Texts

The goal of a research programme Evidence Algorithm is a development of an open system of automated proving that is able to accumulate mathematical knowledge and to prove theorems in a context of a self-contained mathematical text. By now, the first version of such a system called a System for Automated Deduction, SAD, is implemented in software. The system SAD possesses the following main features: mathematical texts are formalized using a specific formal language that is close to a natural language of mathematical publications; a proof search is based on special sequent-type calculi formalizing natural reasoning style, such as application of definitions and auxiliary propositions. These calculi also admit a separation of equality handling from deduction that gives an opportunity to integrate logical reasoning with symbolic calculation.

Terror Management Theory and Belief in an Afterlife

Research has shown that belief in an afterlife, a form of symbolic immortality, can alleviate the negative emotions associated with one’s mortality (Deschesne et. al, 2003). We found this aspect of TMT particularly interesting, but lacking any substantial research. Therefore, we set out to determine if belief in an afterlife could diminish the effects of mortality salience. As far as we know, our study is the first to use a pre-screening process to determine participants’ prior beliefs. One prediction might be that those who believe in an afterlife will be less affected by the effects of mortality salience.

Growth of transcendental meditation: a sociological study

Sociology, in concerning itself with methodology and cultural determinism,may have overlooked the value of human experience in determining social action. We feel that the structural-functionalist point of view is not mutually exclusive with that of symbolic interaction theory. The field of collective behavior has not adequately explained a certain incidence of human activity called Transcendental Meditation. This paper will define Transcendental Meditation in sociological terms and explore its growth in terms of structural-functionalism,as well as in terms of the symbol-making faculty of human experience. In the first chapter, the author will state his biases and background as well as the problem and purpose of the paper. In the second chapter, Transcendental Meditation will be defined through an explanation of its concepts in sociological terms. A view of the TM program will also be reported. Following this in the third chapter, the origins of TM will be discussed~showing its basis to be in a tradition of Indian gurus and following its development in the United states until the present. The history of TM will proceed through biography of leading figures, with special mention of innovations in the TM institution of teaching and events in the growth of the 'movement' of TOO that are of key importance. Having set down the history of TM, in the fourth chapter we will discuss TM in terms of various sociological models. We will try to identify TM as either a social movement; a charismatic organization or a bureaucracy. In the fifth chapter we will look more closely at the structure of the organization that teaches TM in regard to its own functioning; that is, compliance, communication, socialization and recruitment, and also in regard to its relationship with national institutions, such as military, industry, religion, and government. Finally, we will explore TM in terms of individual and group goals and offer an explanation defining the growth of TM. Throughout-the paper, sociological perspectives will be applied to phenomena that exist in the society today. It is not within the scope of this paper to verify all the sociological implications and appraisals offered. It is hoped that this will not invalidate the ensuing discussion. It is also hoped that this paper will expand the horizons of sociology and offer some direction in future studies of collective behavior. If this is accomplished, the author will be gratified and indebted to his teachers. If not the author takes full responsibility. Previsão em tempo atual de cheias com uso de sistema especialista difuso

Sistemas de previsão de cheias podem ser adequadamente utilizados quando o alcance é suficiente, em comparação com o tempo necessário para ações preventivas ou corretivas. Além disso, são fundamentalmente importantes a confiabilidade e a precisão das previsões. Previsões de níveis de inundação são sempre aproximações, e intervalos de confiança não são sempre aplicáveis, especialmente com graus de incerteza altos, o que produz intervalos de confiança muito grandes. Estes intervalos são problemáticos, em presença de níveis fluviais muito altos ou muito baixos. Neste estudo, previsões de níveis de cheia são efetuadas, tanto na forma numérica tradicional quanto na forma de categorias, para as quais utiliza-se um sistema especialista baseado em regras e inferências difusas. Metodologias e procedimentos computacionais para aprendizado, simulação e consulta são idealizados, e então desenvolvidos sob forma de um aplicativo (SELF – Sistema Especialista com uso de Lógica “Fuzzy”), com objetivo de pesquisa e operação. As comparações, com base nos aspectos de utilização para a previsão, de sistemas especialistas difusos e modelos empíricos lineares, revelam forte analogia, apesar das diferenças teóricas fundamentais existentes. As metodologias são aplicadas para previsão na bacia do rio Camaquã (15543 km2), para alcances entre 10 e 48 horas. Dificuldades práticas à aplicação são identificadas, resultando em soluções as quais constituem-se em avanços do conhecimento e da técnica. Previsões, tanto na forma numérica quanto categorizada são executadas com sucesso, com uso dos novos recursos. As avaliações e comparações das previsões são feitas utilizandose um novo grupo de estatísticas, derivadas das freqüências simultâneas de ocorrência de valores observados e preditos na mesma categoria, durante a simulação. Os efeitos da variação da densidade da rede são analisados, verificando-se que sistemas de previsão pluvio-hidrométrica em tempo atual são possíveis, mesmo com pequeno número de postos de aquisição de dados de chuva, para previsões sob forma de categorias difusas.

O Quilombo de Candeia: um teto para todos os sambistas

O objetivo desse estudo é refletir sobre como as iniciativas culturais afirmam suas identidades e podem trazer novas proposições e inovações para a área dos projetos culturais e sociais. Para tal, tomei como objeto de estudo o Grêmio Recreativo Arte Negra Escola de Samba Quilombo (GRANES Quilombo). Por meio da análise de como se constituiu a agremiação, no período entre 1975 e 1978, procurei observar como se representava o Quilombo e concluí que, sob os aspectos simbólicos, construiu seus discursos por meio das relações sociais dos seus participantes, que montaram uma ampla rede de sociabilidade na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. O Quilombo estava ligado ao universo das escolas de samba e do samba e operava com discursos que entrecruzavam concepções sobre "arte negra", "cultura brasileira", samba, identidade nacional e tradição.

Respostas dinâmicas em sistemas distribuídos e decomposição forçada da superfície livre para um modelo acoplado Oceano-Atmosfera

O objetivo deste trabalho é a introdução e desenvolvimento de uma metodologia analítico-simbólica para a obtenção de respostas dinâmicas e forçadas (soluções homogêneas e não homogêneas) de sistemas distribuídos, em domínios ilimitados e limitados, através do uso da base dinâmica gerada a partir da resposta impulso. Em domínios limitados, a resposta impulso foi formulada pelo método espectral. Foram considerados sistemas com condições de contorno homogêneas e não homogêneas. Para sistemas de natureza estável, a resposta forçada é decomposta na soma de uma resposta particular e de uma resposta livre induzida pelos valores iniciais da resposta particular. As respostas particulares, para entradas oscilatórias no tempo, foram calculadas com o uso da fun»c~ao de Green espacial. A teoria é desenvolvida de maneira geral permitindo que diferentes sis- temas evolutivos de ordem arbitrária possam ser tratados sistematicamente de uma forma compacta e simples. Realizou-se simulações simbólicas para a obtenção de respostas dinâmicas e respostas for»cadas com equações do tipo parabólico e hiperbólico em 1D,2D e 3D. O cálculo das respostas forçadas foi realizado com a determinação das respostas livres transientes em termos dos valores iniciais das respostas permanentes. Foi simulada a decomposição da resposta forçada da superfície livre de um modelo acoplado oceano-atmosfera bidimensional, através da resolução de uma equação de Klein-Gordon 2D com termo não-homogêneo de natureza dinâmica, devido a tensão de cisalhamento na superfície do oceano pela ação do vento.

Pesquisa exploratória empírica sobre o fenômeno das 'organizações de simbolismo intensivo'

Esta pesquisa pretende investigar a questão da "intensidade simbólica nas organizações". Organizações de Simbolismo Intensivo (OSI) são ambientes onde: (i) a liderança simbólica é predominante como estilo gerencial; (ii) líderes e liderados aplicam técnicas de gerenciamento da impressão; (iii) a inovação gerencial é tratada como evento dramatúrgico; e (iv) analistas simbólicos são predominantes na força de trabalho. Este trabalho busca evidências anedóticas e empíricas deste fenômeno.

Parceria público-privado na área cultural

Este projeto examina a recente experiência (1992-1997) de incentivos fiscais para estimular o patrocínio empresarial à cultura. Uma lei federal ("Lei Rouanet"), e aproximadamente 20 leis, entre estaduais e municipais, estão em vigor atualmente. Elas fornecem um indispensável complemento ao dispêndio governamental em cultura. Constituem uma experiência a ser encorajada e avaliada em seus aspectos quantitativos e qualitativos. Esta pesquisa poderá servir como o primeiro passo para se construir uma ferramenta para acompanhamento dessa política pública, que vem sendo hoje, aliás, adotada em quase todos os países desenvolvidos, em qualquer parte do mundo.

Publicidade: comércio, cultura e profissão (parte inicial)

O universo daquilo que é abertamente comercial na sociedade contemporânea costuma ser tratado nos meios acadêmicos de forma costumeiramente distante, simplista e ressentida. Ou, ao contrário, através do otimismo ingênuo característico da literatura de celebração. O estudo da história social da publicidade e do marketing é estratégico para avançar contra esse maniqueísmo paralisante. Ele ajuda a ampliar a visão das relações entre industrialização capitalista e mercado, urbanização e modernização, comunicação de massa e vida familiar, favorecendo uma visão mais adulta dos significados do consumo, tanto material quanto simbólico. O texto apoia-se em alguns títulos selecionados em uma bibliografia especializada recolhida recentemente nos EUA, e escolhidos por sua relevância em recolocar questões de sociologia da cultura.

Agricultura ecológica : do engajamento possível à retribuição esperada : um estudo dos agricultores ecologistas de Antônio Prado e Ipê-RS

Nesta dissertação, analiso as lógicas de engajamento dos agricultores ecologistas na agricultura ecológica em Antônio Prado e Ipê, ambos municípios da Encosta Superior do Nordeste do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Os diferentes graus de engajamento dos agricultores estão relacionados à heterogeneidade na estrutura e volume de capitais acumulados por esses agentes durante suas trajetórias e às distintas expectativas de retribuição com relação a este referencial de agricultura. O referencial foi construído ou socializado neste cenário, principalmente, pelos técnicos do Centro Ecológico, constituindo-se num conjunto de práticas agrícolas alternativas que pretendem viabilizar avanços sustentáveis na produção agrícola. Na busca destes “avanços”, a agricultura ecológica é construída sob uma dimensão simbólica, orientada “pela filosofia da preservação ambiental e da justiça social”, e uma dimensão econômica caracterizada pelo objetivo de viabilizar econômica e socialmente a agricultura familiar. Assim, os agricultores, ao se engajarem, fazem suas releituras do referencial e, pela socialização, vão incorporando os limites impostos as suas ações pelas representações dominantes (legítimas) da “prática” e pelas normas que vão se institucionalizando ao longo do tempo, resultando na estrutura objetiva do espaço de relações da agricultura ecológica na região. Essas releituras resultam em distintos graus de engajamento. As distintas tomadas de posições e estratégias desenvolvidas pelos agricultores ecologistas possibilitam a formação de uma hierarquia normativa neste espaço social, permitindo que alguns agricultores, devido às disposições incorporadas durante suas trajetórias e ao tipo de relação estabelecida com os técnicos, se tornem novos mediadores.

Um desafio para a regulação do mercado de assistência à saúde no Brasil: a escolha do consumidor de planos de saúde

The objective of this dissertation is to discover and to analyze the way how the consumer uses his/her perception to decide contracting a health plan, to supply elements that can serve to subsidize the State, the market and the consumers, in relation to the knowledge on the process of choice of the consumer and the decisions of purchase and contracting services of private health. The estimated one is to evidence that the brand of health plan is an important variable and decisive to the consumer contracting the service of a company that operates in these sector, because mean for the consumer security about the product, through the symbolism that the same one represents, despite the consumer not knowing to the certainty what is contracting in quality and amount. The theoretical construction is carried through using literature of anthropology of the consumption, theory of modernity, theory of the regulation, economic utilitarism, and marketing. Moreover, referential specific theoretician on the regulation of the market of health plans in Brazil. The health plan market in Brazil is anti-symmetrical and the consumer doesn¿t have knowledge technician who makes possible it to form judgment and to carry through rationality choices. Than the consumer uses to his/her decision symbolic elements that are available to his/her and supply to his/her the security that is look likes in the consumption of this kind of good. These symbolic elements related the confidence and security and are into the strong brands of the companies and are transmitted to the consumer through the mass media. In this dissertation are used as sources of data some information of the regulatory agency of the sector ¿ ANS -, a research of public opinion with health plans users and the results of the application of proper questionnaires for this research.

A regulação no mercado de planos de saúde: a ação do consumidor e a estratégia da Agência Nacional de Saúde Suplementar - ANS

The scope of this dissertation is to assess the attitudes of subscribers to private health insurance schemes and the regulatory strategy of the Ancillary National Health Agency -- ANS in relation to their demands. The ancillary health market features various players, each with their own specific interests and priorities. Consequently, the ANS should strive to maintain the balance between the consumers, the economic intermediaries and the State, ensuring that the Agency's powers to establish norms, as well as to regulate and to supervise each be exercised independently. Many people contend that there are elements not currently incorporated into the current services of the ANS which could contribute to its regulatory strategy. This study was conducted from the standpoint of theories applied to State administration for structural analysis of the ANS and its strategies, in addition to a symbolic and rational approach for a better understanding of the consumers involved. A survey was conducted of existing records of the ANS, as well as data collected from direct observation. Analysis of the data obtained led to the conclusion that the consumer can become a close ally in the regulatory activity of the ANS, to the extent that the latter may acquire more in-depth knowledge of aspects contained in the demands of the former.

A influência cultural na distância entre o discurso da qualidade total e a prática gerencial em instituições de ensino superior

O estudo procura identificar a influência cultural na distància entre o discurso do programa de Gestão pela Qualidade Total (GQT) e a prática gerencial de uma Instituição de Ensino Superior Caso (lESC), pois parecia haver uma incongruência entre os valores verbalmente expressos pela administração, compartilhados pelo conjunto dos colaboradores, e as práticas observadas na organização. Ou seja, havia uma lógica na articulação da prática gerencial que era incompatível com a lógica dos valores verbalmente expressos. Se acreditarmos, como Geertz (1989), que a análise do fenômeno cultural deve estar calcada sobre a observação do fluxo do comportamento, no qual cada ação é vista como uma ação simbólica, importa analisar fundamentalmente estas ações em seu contexto para compreender seu significado, e buscar então uma explicação para o fato destas práticas estarem incongruentes com o discurso. Para isto foram utilizados observações, entrevistas e questionários na instituição analisada, o que possibilitou verificar que sua relação com o ambiente legitimou práticas gerenciais convergentes com o estilo gerencial brasileiro, sendo possível constatar a intluência cultural na distància entre o discurso adotado pela lESC e sua prática gerencial

A formação do campo da saúde suplementar no Brasil

The aim of the present study is to analyze the evolution of the historical and institutional elements that generate the current design of the private health market in Brazil. Its main theoretical basis is the Theory of the Symbolic Power, by Pierre Bourdieu, complemented, in the non-conflictive aspects of these two visions, by the Anthony Giddens¿ institutional vision on the field genesis motivational factors. The research¿ data were collected through documents and semi structured interviews during 2002 e 2003 period, involving the qualitative analyze due to understand the field¿s phenomena under an actors¿ perspective. The research identifies the several players that integrate the market, their evident strategic goals, and those that are not so, besides of the powers¿ resources used to reach them, by DiMaggio and Powell¿ vision. Thus, it tries to show, through a historic linear description, and emphasis in the determinant facts, the evolution of the market¿s constitution. The study demonstrates that the field had formed from several Estate¿ actions, basically after the past seventy¿ decade, as result of a alternative Government¿ strategy towards a Brazilian population¿s dissemination plan of health¿ services that enforced the institutionalization of isomorphic structures, with a strong internal interaction and a hierarchy between kinds of values, that had emphasized the health¿ symbol as a citizenship¿s value. In the end, the study estimates that the crescent longevity¿ Brazilian¿s population and the consequent work¿s dismiss may cause a private health¿ elitism conforming a future problem in this sensible segment of the social politics of the Brazilian government.
