This review provides an overview of surface diffusion and capillary condensate flow in porous media. Emphasis has been placed on the distinction between purely surface diffusion, multilayer surface diffusion, and, capillary condensate flow.

Recent studies have provided evidence that breast cancer susceptibility gene products (Brca1 and Brca2) suppress cancer, at least in part, by participating in DNA damage signaling and DNA repair. Brca1 is hyperphosphorylated in response to DNA damage and co-localizes with Rad51, a protein involved in homologous-recombination, and Nbs1.Mre11.Rad50, a complex required for both homologous-recombination and nonhomologous end joining repair of damaged DNA. Here, we report that there is a qualitative difference in the phosphorylation states of Brca1 between ionizing radiation (IR) and UV radiation. Brca1 is phosphorylated at Ser-1423 and Ser-1524 after IR and W; however, Ser-1387 is specifically phosphorylated after IR, and Ser-1457 is predominantly phosphorylated after W. These results suggest that different types of DNA-damaging agents might signal to Brca1 in different ways. We also provide evidence that the rapid phosphorylation of Brca1 at Ser-1423 and Ser-1524 after IR (but not after W) is largely ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) kinase-dependent. The overexpression of catalytically inactive ATM and Rad3 related (ATR) kinase inhibited the UV-induced phosphorylation of Brca1 at these sites, indicating that ATR controls Brca1 phosphorylation in vivo after the exposure of cells to UV light. Moreover, ATR associates with Brca1; ATR and Brca1 foci co-localize both in cells synchronized in S phase and after exposure of cells to DNA-damaging agents. ATR can itself phosphorylate the region of Brca1 phosphorylated by ATM (Ser-Gln cluster in the C terminus of Brca1, amino acids 1241-1530), However, there are additional uncharacterized ATR phosphorylation site(s) between residues 521 and 757 of Brca1, Taken together, our results support a model in which ATM and ATR act in parallel but somewhat overlapping pathways of DNA damage signaling but respond primarily to different types of DNA lesion.
Scavenging of siliceous grain-boundary phase of 8-mol%-ytterbia-stabilized zirconia without additive

The grain-boundary conductivity (sigma (gb),) of 8-mol%-ytterbiastabilized zirconia increased markedly with heat treatment between 1000 degrees and 1300 degreesC with a slow heating rate (0.1 degreesC/min) before sintering. The extent of the sigma (gb) improvement was the same or larger than that via Al2O3 addition. The heat treatment did not affect the grain-interior conduction when sintered at 1600 degreesC, while Al2O3-derived scavenging significantly did, given the larger increment of total conductivity in the heat-treated sample. The formation of a silicon-containing phase in a discrete form was suggested as a possible route of scavenging the resistive phase from the correlation between average grain size and sigma (gb).

We propose a model for permeation in oxide coated gas barrier films. The model accounts for diffusion through the amorphous oxide lattice, nano-defects within the lattice, and macro-defects. The presence of nano-defects indicate the oxide layer is more similar to a nano-porous solid (such as zeolite) than silica glass with respect to permeation properties. This explains why the permeability of oxide coated polymers is much greater, and the activation energy of permeation much lower, than values expected for polymers coated with glass. We have used the model to interpret permeability and activation energies measured for the inert gases (He, Ne and Ar) in evaporated SiOx films of varying thickness (13-70 nm) coated on a polymer substrate. Atomic force and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the structure of the oxide layer. Although no defects could be detected by microscopy, the permeation data indicate that macro-defects (>1 nm), nano-defects (0.3-0.4 nm) and the lattice interstices (<0.3 nm) all contribute to the total permeation. An acceleration compensated transducer was developed to enable the direct measurement of skin friction in hypervelocity impulse facilities. The gauge incorporated a measurement and acceleration element that employed direct shear of a piezoelectric ceramic. The design integrated techniques to maximize rise time and shear response while minimizing the affects of acceleration, pressure, heat transfer, and electrical interference. The arrangement resulted in a transducer natural frequency near 40 kHz. The transducer was calibrated for shear and acceleration in separate bench tests and was calibrated for pressure within an impulse facility. Uncertainty analyses identified only small experimental errors in the shear and acceleration calibration techniques. Although significant errors were revealed in the method of pressure calibration, total skin-friction measurement errors as low as +/-7-12% were established. The transducer was successfully utilized in a shock tunnel, and sample measurements are presented for flow conditions that simulate a flight Mach number near 8.

This paper reviews the current knowledge and understanding of martensitic transformations in ceramics - the tetragonal to monoclinic transformation in zirconia in particular. This martensitic transformation is the key to transformation toughening in zirconia ceramics. A very considerable body of experimental data on the characteristics of this transformation is now available. In addition, theoretical predictions can be made using the phenomenological theory of martensitic transformations. As the paper will illustrate, the phenomenological theory is capable of explaining all the reported microstructural and crystallographic features of the transformation in zirconia and in some other ceramic systems. Hence the theory, supported by experiment, can be used with considerable confidence to provide the quantitative data that is essential for developing a credible, comprehensive understanding of the transformation toughening process. A critical feature in transformation toughening is the shape strain that accompanies the transformation. This shape strain, or nucleation strain, determines whether or not the stress-induced martensitic transformation can occur at the tip of a potentially dangerous crack. If transformation does take place, then it is the net transformation strain left behind in the transformed region that provides toughening by hindering crack growth. The fracture mechanics based models for transformation toughening, therefore, depend on having a full understanding of the characteristics of the martensitic transformation and, in particular, on being able to specify both these strains. A review of the development of the models for transformation toughening shows that their refinement and improvement over the last couple of decades has been largely a result of the inclusion of more of the characteristics of the stress-induced martensitic transformation. The paper advances an improved model for the stress-induced martensitic transformation and the strains resulting from the transformation. This model, which separates the nucleation strain from the subsequent net transformation strain, is shown to be superior to any of the constitutive models currently available. High quality MSS membranes were synthesised by a single-step and two-step catalysed hydrolyses employing tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), absolute ethanol (EtOH), I M nitric acid (HNO3) and distilled water (H2O). The Si-29 NMR results showed that the two-step xerogels consistently had more contribution of silanol groups (Q(3) and Q(2)) than the single-step xerogel. According to the fractal theory, high contribution of Q(2) and Q(3) species are responsible for the formation of weakly branched systems leading to low pore volume of microporous dimension. The transport of diffusing gases in these membranes is shown to be activated as the permeance increased with temperature. Albeit the permeance of He for both single-step and two-step membranes are very similar, the two-step membranes permselectivity (ideal separation factor) for He/CO2 (69-319) and He/CH4 (585-958) are one to two orders of magnitude higher than the single-step membranes results of 2-7 and 69, respectively. The two-step membranes have high activation energy for He and H-2 permeance, in excess of 16 kJ mol(-1). The mobility energy for He permeance is three to six-fold higher for the two-step than the single-step membranes. As the mobility energy is higher for small pores than large pores and coupled with the permselectivity results, the two-step catalysed hydrolysis sol-gel process resulted in the formation of pore sizes in the region of 3 Angstrom while the single-step process tended to produce slightly larger pores. Green Hill Fort, Thursday Islalld was constructed between 1891-1893 to defend the Australian colonies against a feared Russian invasion. It retained an operational role until the 1920.'1 and played a minor role in World /t'ar 2. From 1954 to 1993 the site, but not the facilities, was used as a weather station. More recently it has been home ofthe Ton-es Strait Historical Society and Museum Association museum. It is a major attraction during the tourist season and an important local icon. For archaeologists it has sign~ficance as a relatively intact nineteenth-century military installation. Two 'Centenary of Federation' grants have proVided the impetus to undertake conservation and presentation works involving various task -spec~fic, archaeological activities. At the management level archaeologists play the lead role in the project. The project has demonstrated the value oJarchaeology and tourism joining forces. The danger ofa 'theme park 'presentation has been avoided. Technical accuracy and careful site planning has ensured a high degree ofaccuracy is retained. Provided these qualities can be assured then, it is argued, there is an opportunity for archaeology to be a majOl; long-term beneficiary. But to achieve that, the discipline must move from being entrenched in its academic mould and become Jar more receptive to the broader needs ofthe twentyfirst century.

Ichthyosporea is a recently recognized group of morphologically simple eukaryotes, many of which cause disease in aquatic organisms. Ribosomal RNA sequence analyses place Ichthyosporea near the divergence of the animal and fungal lineages, but do not allow resolution of its exact phylogenetic position. Some of the best evidence for a specific grouping of animals and fungi (Opisthokonta) has come from elongation factor 1alpha, not only phylogenetic analysis of sequences but also the presence or absence of short insertions and deletions. We sequenced the EF-1alpha gene from the ichthyosporean parasite Ichthyophonus irregularis and determined its phylogenetic position using neighbor-joining, parsimony and Bayesian methods. We also sequenced EF-1alpha genes from four chytrids to provide broader representation within fungi. Sequence analyses and the presence of a characteristic 12 amino acid insertion strongly indicate that I. irregularis is a member of Opisthokonta, but do not resolve whether I. irregularis is a specific relative of animals or of fungi. However, the EF-1alpha of I. irregularis exhibits a two amino acid deletion heretofore reported only among fungi. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science (USA). All rights reserved.

The HERG K+ channel has very unusual kinetic behavior that includes slow activation but rapid inactivation. These features are critical for normal cardiac repolarization as well as in preventing lethal ventricular arrhythmias. Mutagenesis studies have shown that the extracellular peptide linker joining the fifth transmembrane domain to the pore helix is critical for rapid inactivation of the HERG K+ channel. This peptide linker is also considerably longer in HERG K+ channels, 40 amino acids, than in most other voltage-gated K+ channels. In this study we show that a synthetic 42-residue peptide corresponding to this linker region of the HERG K+ channel does not have defined structural elements in aqueous solution; however, it displays two well defined helical regions when in the presence of SDS micelles. The helices correspond to Trp(585)-Ile(593) and Gly(604)-Tyr(611) of the channel. The Trp(585)-Ile(593) helix has distinct hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. The Gly(604)-Tyr(611) helix corresponds to an N-terminal extension of the pore helix. Electrophysiological studies of HERG currents following application of exogenous S5P peptides show that the amphipathic helix in the S5P linker interacts with the pore region of the channel in a voltage-dependent manner.

Esta pesquisa documental analisa as concepções de alfabetização, leitura e escrita subjacentes à Provinha Brasil no período 2008-2012 e o panorama em que esse programa de avaliação é produzido. Parte do referencial bakhtiniano e do conceito de alfabetização de Gontijo (2008, 2013). Ao tomar a Provinha como gênero do discurso, discute os elos precedentes dentro do contexto de produção dessa avaliação, a autoria do Programa e seus principais destinatários. Constata que a Provinha é criada como resposta às demandas de avaliação da alfabetização provenientes de organismos internacionais como o Banco Mundial e a Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação (Unesco). A avaliação é elaborada pelo Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira (Inep) como órgão que coordena as avaliações no País, em colaboração com pesquisadores de universidades e de organizações da sociedade civil, para demonstrar confiabilidade científica aliada à participação democrática no processo de produção. Seus principais destinatários são gestores de Secretarias de Educação e professores. Aos primeiros, cabe aderir ao programa de avaliação e tomar medidas administrativas para sua operacionalização nas redes. Os docentes têm o papel central de seguir as orientações do material e reorganizar sua prática em função de melhorias nos desempenhos das crianças no teste. Estas, por sua vez, são desconsideradas como sujeitos de dizeres e é legitimado um discurso homogeneizador sobre seu desenvolvimento. A partir dos testes aplicados e das matrizes de referência e seus eixos, a pesquisa analisa como a diferenciação teórica entre alfabetização e letramento se concretiza na organização das provas. A alfabetização, entendida como apropriação do sistema de escrita, é avaliada no primeiro eixo do teste principalmente como identificação de unidades menores da língua, como letras, sílabas e fonemas. As habilidades de leitura, ligadas ao letramento como concebido nos pressupostos do programa, são aferidas ora como decodificação de palavras e frases descontextualizadas, ora como apreensão de significado predeterminado do texto. A escrita somente é avaliada no ano de 2008 e por meio de itens que solicitavam codificação de palavras e frases ditadas pelo aplicador. Desse modo, a Provinha Brasil contribui para a subtração das potencialidades políticas e transformadoras do aprendizado da língua materna no País.

Due to the few studies about grafting in net melon, in order to obtain better control of soil pathogens, the aim of the present study was to evaluate 16 genotypes of Cucurbitaceae: Benincasa hispida, Luffa cylindrica, pumpkin 'Jacarezinho', pumpkin 'Menina Brasileira', squash 'Exposição', squash 'Coroa', pumpkin 'Canhão Seca', pumpkin 'Squash', pumpkin 'Enrrugado Verde', pumpkin 'Mini Paulista', pumpkin 'Goianinha', watermelon 'Charleston Gray', melon 'Rendondo Gaucho', melon 'Redondo Amarelo', cucumber 'Caipira HS' and cucumber 'Caipira Rubi', regarding to compatibility of grafting in net melon and resistance to Meloidogyne incognita, based on the reproduction factor (RF), according to Oostenbrink (1966). To assess resistance, the seedlings were transplanted to ceramic pots and inoculated with 300/mL eggs and/or second stage juveniles of M. incognita. At 50 days after transplanting, the plants were removed from the pots and the resistance was evaluated. The compatibility between resistant rootstock and grafts of net melon was determined by performing simple cleft grafting, in a commercial net melon hybrid of great market acceptance and susceptible to M. incognita (Bonus no. 2). The genotypes Luffa cylindrica, pumpkin 'Goianinha', pumpkin 'Mini-Paulista', melon 'Redondo Amarelo', watermelon 'Charleston Gray' are resistant to the nematode M. incognita. The better compatibilities occurred with the rootstocks melon 'Amarelo', which presented 100% of success, followed by pumpkin 'Mini-Paulista' with 94%. On the other hand, Sponge gourd, watermelon 'Charleston Gray' and pumpkin 'Goianinha' showed low graft take percentages of 66%, 62% and 50%, respectively.

Background: Kidney stone is a major universal health problem, affecting 10% of the population worldwide. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is a first-line and established procedure for disintegration and removal of renal stones. Its surgical success depends on the precise needle puncture of renal calyces, which remains the most challenging task for surgeons. This work describes and tests a new ultrasound based system to alert the surgeon when undesirable anatomical structures are in between the puncture path defined through a tracked needle. Methods: Two circular ultrasound transducers were built with a single 3.3-MHz piezoelectric ceramic PZT SN8, 25.4 mm of radius and resin-epoxy matching and backing layers. One matching layer was designed with a concave curvature to work as an acoustic lens with long focusing. The A-scan signals were filtered and processed to automatically detect reflected echoes. Results: The transducers were mapped in water tank and tested in a study involving 45 phantoms. Each phantom mimics different needle insertion trajectories with a percutaneous path length between 80 and 150 mm. Results showed that the beam cross-sectional area oscillates around the ceramics radius and it was possible to automatically detect echo signals in phantoms with length higher than 80 mm. Conclusions: This new solution may alert the surgeon about anatomical tissues changes during needle insertion, which may decrease the need of X-Ray radiation exposure and ultrasound image evaluation during percutaneous puncture.

In an increasingly complex society, regulatory polices emerge as an important tool in public management. Nevertheless, regulation per se is no longer enough, and the agenda for a regulatory reform is increasing. Following this context, Brazil has implemented Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA) in its regulatory agencies. Thus, Brazilian specificities have to be considered and, in this regard, a systematic approach provides a significant contribution. This article aims to address some critical reflections about which policy-makers should ask themselves before joining the implementation of a RIA system in the Brazilian context. Through a long-term perspective, the implementation of RIA must be seen as part of a permanent change in the administrative culture, understanding that RIA should be used as a further resource in the decision-making process, rather than a final solution.
