Raman spectra of single crystals of diglycine hydrochloride, diglycine hydrobromide and diglycine nitrate have been recorded for the first time. λ 2536·5 resonance radiation of mercury has been used as exciter. The spectrum of diglycine hydrochloride exhibits 10 low frequency lines and 41 lines due to internal oscillations, while that of diglycine hydrobromide exhibits 11 lines and 41 lines respectively. In the case of diglycine nitrate 46 lines have been recorded, of which 10 belong to the lattice spectrum. These spectra are compared with the Raman spectra of triglycine sulphate and α-glycine and proper assignments have been given to the internal oscillations.

Raman spectra of single crystals of β-malonic acid and β-succinic acid have been photographed using λ 2536·5 radiation. 32 Raman lines have been recorded in the case of β-malonic acid. Of these 21 lines have been recorded for the first time. The three intense lattice lines at 52, 90 and 144 cm.-1 have been attributed to rotational lattice oscillations. 29 Raman lines in the case of β-succinic acid have been recorded. The entire lattice spectrum and many internal frequencies have been recorded for the first time. The three intense lattice lines at 80, 135 and 160 cm.-1 have been assigned to the rotational oscillations of the two molecules of the succinic acid in the unit cell.

neral expressions have been derived for the intensities of the three classes of Raman lines namely totally symmetric A, doubly degenerate E and triply degenerate F, in the case of cubic crystals under the following conditions. The direction of the incident beam which is polarised with its electric vector inclined at an angle α to the normal to the scattering plane makes an angle Θ with one of the cubic axes of the crystal. The transversely scattered light is analysed by a double image prism with its principal axes inclined at angle β to the normal to the scattering plane, which is horizontal. For incident unpolarised light and Θ=22 1/2°, and the scattered light being analysed by a double image prism rotated through 45° from the position when its principal axes are vertical and horizontal ρ{variant} for A lines is equal to one, for E lines >1 and for F lines <1. This gives a method of classifying the Raman lines of a cubic crystal in a single setting. The results have been experimentally verified in sodium chlorate.

The Raman and i.r. spectra of antiferroelectric copper formate tetrahydrate have been recorded. The i.r. spectrum of copper formate tetrahydrate at liquid air temperature (the phase transition is at −38·9°C) does not show any striking changes from the room temperature spectrum except for intensity variations. This is explained as due to the fact that the frequency of reorientation of the protons even in the paraelectric phase is much less than the optical frequencies.

Spontaneous ejection of chloride from a three-coordinate boron Lewis acid can be effected by employing very electron rich metal substituents and leads to the formation of a sterically unprotected terminal (dimethylamino)borylene complex that has a short metal-boron bond and remarkable resistance to attack by nucleophilic and protic reagents.

Switching frequency variation over a fundamental period is a major problem associated with hysteresis controller based VSI fed IM drives. This paper describes a novel concept of generating parabolic trajectories for current error space phasor for controlling the switching frequency variation in the hysteresis controller based two-level inverter fed IM drives. A generalized algorithm is developed to determine unique set of parabolic trajectories for different speeds of operation for any given IM load. Proposed hysteresis controller provides the switching frequency spectrum of inverter output voltage, similar to that of the constant switching frequency VC-SVPWM based IM drive. The scheme is extensively simulated and experimentally verified on a 3.7 kW IM drive for steady state and transient performance.

Ultrafast Raman loss spectroscopy (URLS) enables one to obtain the vibrational structural information of molecular systems including fluorescent materials. URLS, a nonlinear process analog to stimulated Raman gain, involves a narrow bandwidth picosecond Raman pump pulse anda femtosecond broadband white light continuum. Under nonresonant condition, the Raman response appears as a negative (loss) signal, whereas, on resonance with the electronic transition the line shape changes from a negative to a positive through a dispersive form. The intensities observed and thus, the Franck-Condon activity (coordinate dependent), are sensitive to the wavelength of the white light corresponding to a particular Raman frequency with respect to the Raman pump pulse wavelength, i.e., there is a mode-dependent response in URLS. This paper describes the design and development of a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor system for monitoring tsunami waves generated in the deep ocean. An experimental setup was designed and fabricated to simulate the generation and propagation of a tsunami wave. The characteristics and efficiency of the developed FBG sensor was evaluated with a standard commercial Digiquartz sensor. For real time monitoring of tsunami waves, FBG sensors bonded to a cantilever is used and the wavelength shifts (Delta lambda(B)) in the reflected spectra resulting from the strain/pressure imparted on the FBGs have been recorded using a high-speed Micron Optics FBG interrogation system. The parameters sensed are the signal burst during tsunami generation and pressure variations at different places as the tsunami wave propagates away from the source of generation. The results obtained were compared with the standard commercial sensor used in tsunami detection. The observations suggest that the FBG sensor was highly sensitive and free from many of the constraints associated with the commercial tsunameter.

A fully self-consistent formulation is described here for the analysis and generation of base-pairs in non-uniform DNA structures, in terms of various local parameters. It is shown that the internal "wedge parameters" are mathematically related to the parameters describing the base-pair orientation with respect to an external helix axis. Hence any one set of three translation and three rotation parameters are necessary and sufficient to completely describe the relative orientation of the base-pairs comprising a step (or doublet). A general procedure is outlined for obtaining an average or global helix axis from the local helix axes for each step. A graphical representation of the local helix axes in the form of a polar plot is also shown and its application for estimating the curvature of oligonucleotide structures is illustrated, with examples of both A and B type structures.

A general method for generation of base-pairs in a curved DNA structure, for any prescribed values of helical parameters--unit rise (h), unit twist (theta), wedge roll (theta R) and wedge tilt (theta T), propeller twist (theta p) and displacement (D) is described. Its application for generation of uniform as well curved structures is also illustrated with some representative examples. An interesting relationship is observed between helical twist (theta), base-pair parameters theta x, theta y and the wedge parameters theta R, theta T, which has important consequences for the description and estimation of DNA curvature.
