The cis/trans isomer ratios of the Xaa-Pyr (Pyr = pyrrolidine) 3 degrees amide bonds are significantly high (similar to 90% cis) in the novel peptidomimetics where Pyr contains 1,3-oxazine (Oxa) or 1,3-thiazine (Thi) at its 2 position. We find that an unusual n -> pi(i-1)* interaction, selectively stabilizes the cis conformer and the n X n repulsion destabilizes the trans conformer of these molecules. Both these electronic effects oppose the steric effects in the 3 degrees amide bond. The structural requirements for manifestation of these electronic effects are determined. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Carbonaceous nickel oxide powder samples have been synthesized from an adducted nickel beta-ketoester complex used as a ``single source precursor'' through a solution-based microwave-assisted chemical route. Comprehensive analysis of the resulting powder material has been carried out using various characterization techniques. These analysis reveal that, depending on the solvent used, either NiO/C or Ni/NiO/C composites are formed, wherein Ni and/or NiO nanocrystals are enveloped in amorphous carbon. As the components emerge from the same molecular source, the composites are homogeneous on a fine scale, making them promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. Electrochemical capacitive behavior of these oxide composites is studied in a three-electrode configuration. With a specific capacitance of 113 F g(-1), Ni/NiO/C is superior to NiO/C as capacitor electrode material, in 0.1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. This is confirmed by impedance measurements, which show that charge-transfer resistance and equivalent series resistance are lower in Ni/NiO/C than in NiO/C, presumably because of the presence of metallic nickel in the former. The cyclic voltammograms are nearly rectangular and the electrodes display excellent cyclability in different electrolytes: Na2SO4, KOH and Ca(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O. Specific capacitance as high as 143 F g(-1), is measured in Ca(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O electrolyte.

Structural, iono (IL) and thermoluminescence (TL) studies of Zn2SiO4:Sm3+ (1-5 mol%) nanophosphor bombarded with swift heavy ions in the fluence range 3.91 x 10(12)-21.48 x 10(12) cm(-2) have been carried out. The average crystallite sizes for pristine and ion irradiated for 3.91 x 10(12) ions cm(-2) and 21.48 x 10(12) ions cm(-2) were found to be 34, 26 and 20 nm. With increase of ion fluence, the intensity of XRD peaks decreases and FWHM increases. The peak broadening indicates the stress induced point/clusters defects produced due to heavy ion irradiation. IL studies were carried out for different Sm3+ concentrations in Zn2SiO4 by irradiating with ion fluence of 15.62 x 10(12) ions cm(-2). The characteristic emission peaks at similar to 562, 599, 646 and 701 nm were recorded by exciting Si7+ ions in the fluence range 3.91 x 10(12)-21.48 x 10(12) ions cm(-2). These peaks were attributed to (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(5/2) (562 nm), (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(7/2) (599 nm), (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(9/2) (646 nm), and (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(5/2) (701 nm) transitions of Sm3+. The highest emission was recorded at 3 mol% of Sm3+ doped Zn2SiO4. TL studies were carried out for 3 mol% Sm3+ concentration in the fluence range 3.91 x 10(12)-21.48 x 10(12) ions cm(-2). Two U glow peaks at 152 and 223 degrees C were recorded. The kinetic parameters (E, b, and s), were estimated using Chen's peak shape method. Simple glow curve structure (223 degrees C), highly resistive, increase in TL. intensity up to 19.53 x 10(12) ions cm(-2), simple trap distribution makes Zn2SiO4:Sm3+ (3 mol%) phosphor highly useful in radiation dosimetry.

We report the synthesis of Pr6O11 microspheres self-assembled from ultra-small nanocrystals formed by the microwave irradiation of a solution of a salt of Pr in ethylene glycol (EG). The as-prepared product consists of microspheres measuring 200 to 500 nm in diameter and made of <5 nm nano-crystallites. The surface of these microspheres/nanocrystals is covered/capped with an organic layer of ethylene glycol as shown by TEM analysis and confirmed by IR spectroscopy measurements. The as-prepared product shows blue-green emission under excitation, which changes to orange-red when the product is annealed in air at 600 degrees C for 2 h. This change in luminescence behaviour can be attributed to presence of ethylene glycol layer in the as-prepared product. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), IR Spectroscopy (IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Diffusion controlled growth of the phases in Hf-Si and Zr-Si systems are studied by bulk diffusion couple technique. Only two phases grow in the interdiffusion zone, although several phases are present in both the systems. The location of the Kirkendall marker plane, detected based on the grain morphology, indicates that disilicides grow by the diffusion of Si. Diffusion of the metal species in these phases is negligible. This indicates that vacancies are present mainly on the Si sublattice. The activation energies for integrated diffusion coefficients in the HfSi2 and ZrSi2 are estimated as 394 +/- 37 and 346 +/- 34 kJ mol(-1), respectively. The same is calculated for the HfSi phase as 485 +/- 42 kJ mol(-1). The activation energies for Si tracer diffusion in the HfSi2 and ZrSi2 phases are estimated as 430 +/- 36 and 348 +/- 34 kJ mol(-1), respectively. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of extruded Mg composites containing micro-Ti particulates hybridized with varying contents of nano-B4C are investigated, and compared with Mg-5.6Ti. Microstructural characterization showed the presence of uniformly distributed micro-Ti particles embedded with nano-B4C particulates that resulted in significant grain refinement. Electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analyses of Mg-(5.6Ti + x-B4C)(BM) hybrid composites showed that the addition of hybridized particle resulted in relatively more recrystallized grains, realignment of basal planes and extension of weak basal fibre texture when compared to Mg-5.6Ti. The evaluation of mechanical properties indicated improved strength with ductility retention in Mg-(5.6Ti + x-B4C)(BM) hybrid composites. When compared to Mg-5.6Ti, the superior strength properties of the Mg-(5.6Ti + xB(4)C)(BM) hybrid composites are attributed to the presence of nano-reinforcements, the uniform distribution of the hybridized particles, better interfacial bonding between the matrix and the reinforcement particles and the matrix grain refinement achieved by nano-B4C addition. The ductility enhancement obtained in hybrid composites can be attributed to the fibre texture spread and favourable basal plane orientation achieved due to nano B4C addition. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Micro-Raman studies are conducted on as-quenched and annealed Ge15Te80 -_xIn5Agx glasses to probe the structural network and its evolution with composition. These studies reveal the presence of tetrahedral GeTe4 structural units in as-quenched samples. Specific signatures of the intermediate phase (IP) are observed in the composition dependence of Raman frequencies and corresponding intensities of different modes in the composition range, 8 <= x <= 16. In addition, the Raman peak positions are found to shift with silver doping. Apart from the Raman results, the compositional dependence of density, molar volume and thermal diffusivity, observed in the present study, confirms the presence of the intermediate phase. In thermally annealed samples, a unique variation of Raman wave-numbers in the intermediate region is observed due to the retention of some of the local structure even after the sample is crystallized. The observed Raman peaks are attributed to crystalline tellurium and silver lattice vibrational modes. Based on our present and earlier studies, we propose the occurrence of three thresholds in Ge15Te80 - xIn5Agx glasses, namely percolation of rigidity, percolation of stress and the onset of chemical phase separation on a nanoscale at 8%, 16% and 20% of silver concentration respectively. Polyhedral techniques for program transformation are now used in several proprietary and open source compilers. However, most of the research on polyhedral compilation has focused on imperative languages such as C, where the computation is specified in terms of statements with zero or more nested loops and other control structures around them. Graphical dataflow languages, where there is no notion of statements or a schedule specifying their relative execution order, have so far not been studied using a powerful transformation or optimization approach. The execution semantics and referential transparency of dataflow languages impose a different set of challenges. In this paper, we attempt to bridge this gap by presenting techniques that can be used to extract polyhedral representation from dataflow programs and to synthesize them from their equivalent polyhedral representation. We then describe PolyGLoT, a framework for automatic transformation of dataflow programs which we built using our techniques and other popular research tools such as Clan and Pluto. For the purpose of experimental evaluation, we used our tools to compile LabVIEW, one of the most widely used dataflow programming languages. Results show that dataflow programs transformed using our framework are able to outperform those compiled otherwise by up to a factor of seventeen, with a mean speed-up of 2.30x while running on an 8-core Intel system.

A porous layered composite of Li2MnO3 and LiMn0.35Ni0.55Fe0.1O2 (composition:Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.22Fe0.04O2) is prepared by inverse microemulsion method and studied as a positive electrode material. The precursor is heated at several temperatures between 500 and 900 degrees C. The X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy studies suggested that well crystalline submicronsized particles are obtained. The product samples possess mesoporosity with broadly distributed pores around 10 similar to 50 nm diameter. Pore volume and surface area decrease by increasing the temperature of preparation. However, the electrochemical activity of the composite samples increases with an increase in temperature. The discharge capacity values of the samples prepared at 900 degrees C are about 186 mAh g(-1) at a specific current of 25 mA g(-1) with an excellent cycling stability. The composite sample also possesses high rate capability. The high rate capability is attributed to the porous nature of the material. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Surface energy processes has an essential role in urban weather, climate and hydrosphere cycles, as well in urban heat redistribution. The research was undertaken to analyze the potential of Landsat and MODIS data in retrieving biophysical parameters in estimating land surface temperature & heat fluxes diurnally in summer and winter seasons of years 2000 and 2010 and understanding its effect on anthropogenic heat disturbance over Delhi and surrounding region. Results show that during years 2000-2010, settlement and industrial area increased from 5.66 to 11.74% and 4.92 to 11.87% respectively which in turn has direct effect on land surface temperature (LST) and heat fluxes including anthropogenic heat flux. Based on the energy balance model for land surface, a method to estimate the increase in anthropogenic heat flux (Has) has been proposed. The settlement and industrial areas has higher amounts of energy consumed and has high values of Has in all seasons. The comparison of satellite derived LST with that of field measured values show that Landsat estimated values are in close agreement within error of 2 degrees C than MODIS with an error of 3 degrees C. It was observed that, during 2000 and 2010, the average change in surface temperature using Landsat over settlement & industrial areas of both seasons is 1.4 degrees C & for MODIS data is 3.7 degrees C. The seasonal average change in anthropogenic heat flux (Has) estimated using Landsat & MODIS is up by around 38 W/m(2) and 62 W/m(2) respectively while higher change is observed over settlement and concrete structures. The study reveals that the dynamic range of Has values has increased in the 10 year period due to the strong anthropogenic influence over the area. The study showed that anthropogenic heat flux is an indicator of the strength of urban heat island effect, and can be used to quantify the magnitude of the urban heat island effect. The present study combines field and satellite observations to investigate how hydrographical transformations influence phytoplankton size structure in the southern Bay of Bengal during the peak Southwest Monsoon/Summer Monsoon (July-August). The intrusion of the Summer Monsoon Current (SMC) into the Bay of Bengal and associated changes in sea surface chemistry, traceable eastward up to 90 degrees E along 8 degrees N, seems to influence biology of the region significantly. Both in situ and satellite (MODIS) data revealed low surface chlorophyll except in the area influenced by the SMC During the study period, two well-developed cydonic eddies (north) and an anti-cyclonic eddy (south), closely linked to the main eastward flow of the SMC, were sampled. Considering the capping effect of the low-saline surface water that is characteristic of the Bay of Bengal, the impact of the cyclonic eddy, estimated in terms of enhanced nutrients and chlorophyll, was mostly restricted to the subsurface waters (below 20 m depth). Conversely, the anti-cyclonic eddy aided by the SMC was characterized by considerably higher nutrient concentration and chlorophyll in the upper water column (upper 60 m), which was contrary to the general characteristic of such eddies. Albeit smaller phytoplankton predominated the southern Bay of Bengal (60-95% of the total chlorophyll), the contribution of large phytoplankton was double in the regions influenced by the SMC and associated eddies. Multivariate analysis revealed the extent to which SMC-associated eddies spatially influence phytoplankton community structure. The study presents the first direct quantification of the size structure of phytoplankton from the southern Bay of Bengal and demonstrates that the SMC-associated hydrographical ramifications significantly increase the phytoplankton biomass contributed by larger phytoplankton and thereby influence the vertical opal and organic carbon flux in the region. The structural effects of a representative disallowed conformation of Aib on the 3(10)-helical fold of an octapeptidomimetic are explored. The 1D (H-1, C-13) & 2D NMR, FT-IR and CD data reveal that the octapeptide 1, adopts a 3(10)-helical conformation in solution, as it does in its crystal structure. The C-terminal methyl carboxylate (CO2Me) of 1 was modified into an 1,3-oxazine (Oxa) functional group in the peptidomimetic 2. This modification results in the stabilization of the backbone of the C-terminal Aib (Aib*-Oxa) of 2, in a conformation (phi, =180, 0) that is natively disallowed to Aib. Consequent to the presence of this natively disallowed conformation, the 3(10)-helical fold is not disrupted in the body of the peptidomimetic 2. But the structural distortions that do occur in 2 are primarily in residues in the immediate vicinity of the natively disallowed conformation, rather than in the whole peptide body. Non-native electronic effects resulting from modifications in backbone functional groups can be at the origin of stabilizing residues in natively disallowed conformations. This note is a study of nonnegativity conditions on curvature preserved by the Ricci flow. We focus on a specific class of curvature conditions which we call non-coercive: These are the conditions for which nonnegative curvature and vanishing scalar curvature does not imply flatness. We show, in dimensions greater than 4, that if a Ricci flow invariant nonnegativity condition is satisfied by all Einstein curvature operators with nonnegative scalar curvature, then this condition is just the nonnegativity of scalar curvature. As a corollary, we obtain that a Ricci flow invariant curvature condition, which is stronger than a nonnegative scalar curvature, cannot be strictly satisfied by curvature operators (other than multiples of the identity) of compact Einstein symmetric spaces. We also investigate conditions which are satisfied by all conformally flat manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature.
