Cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV)-based thin films are biologically active for cell culture. Using layer-by-layer assembly of CPMV and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), quantitatively scalable biomolecular surfaces were constructed, which were well characterized using quartz crystal microbalance, UV-vis and atomic force microscopy. The surface coverage of CPMV nanoparticles depended on the adsorption time and pH of the virus solution, with a greater amount of CPMV adsorption occurring near its isoelectric point. It was found that the adhesion and proliferation of NIH-3T3 fibroblasts can be controlled by the coverage of viral particles using this multilayer technique.

A simple layer-by-layer (LBL) electrostatic adsorption technique was developed for deposition of films composed of alternating layers of positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and negatively charged multiwall carbon nanotubes bearing platinum nanoparticles (Pt-CNTs). PDDA/Pt-CNT film structure and morphology up to six layers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, showing the Pt-CNT layers to be porous and uniformly deposited within the multilayer films.

Layer-by-layer assembly technique was used to construct ultrathin film of cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) by electrostatic interactions, and the film was employed as a precursor on which an OF8T2 film was deposited by spin coating. Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) was observed and improved for the OF8T2 film. Compared with OF8T2 film on quartz, the introduction of CPMV nanoparticles reduced the threshold and loss, and remarkably increased the net gain. The threshold, loss, and gain reached 0.05 mJ/ pulse, 6.9 cm(-1), and 82 cm(-1), respectively. CPMV nanoparticles may enormously scatter light, resulting in a positive feedback, thus the ASE is easily obtained and improved.

Magnetic luminescent nanocomposites were prepared via a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly approach. The Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles of 8.5 nm were used as a template for the deposition of the CdTe quantum dots (QDs)/polyelectrolyte (PE) multilayers. The number of polyelectrolyte multilayers separating the nanoparticle layers and the number of QDs/ polyelectrolyte deposition cycles were varied to obtain two kinds of magnetic luminescent nanocomposites, Fe3O4/PEn/CdTe and Fe3O4/(PE3/CdTe)(n), respectively. The assembly processes were monitored through microelectrophoresis and UV-vis spectra. The topography and the size of the nanocomposites were studied by transmission electron microscopy. The LbL technique for fabricating magnetic luminescent nanocomposites has some advantages to tune their properties. It was found that the selection of a certain number of the inserted polyelectrolyte interlayers and the CdTe QDs loading on the nanocomposites could optimize the photoluminescence properties of the nanocomposites. Furthermore, the nanocomposites could be easily separated and collected in an external magnetic field.

Fabrication of ultrathin polymer composite films with low dielectric constants has been demonstrated. Octa( aminophenyl) silsesquioxane (OAPS) was synthesized and assembled with poly( acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly( styrene sulfonate) (PSS) via a layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly technique to yield nanoporous ultrathin films. The OAPS was soluble in water at pH 3 or lower, and suitable pH conditions for the OAPS/PAA and OAPS/PSS assemblies were determined. The multilayer formation process was studied by contact angle analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, quartz crystal microgravimetry, UV-vis spectroscopy, and ellipsometry. The multilayer growth was found to be steady and uniform, and the analysis of the film surface revealed a rough topography due to OAPS aggregates. The incorporation of porous OAPS molecules into the thin films significantly lowered their dielectric constants. The OAPS/PAA multilayer thin film thus prepared exhibited a dielectric constant of 2.06 compared to 2.58 for pure PAA film. The OAPS/PAA multilayer film was heated to effect cross-linking between the OAPS and the PAA layers, and the transformation was verified by reflection-absorption Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Protein multilayers composed of avidin and biotin-labeled antibody (bio-Ab) were prepared on gold surface by layer-by-layer assembly technology using the high specific binding constant (K-a: approximate to 10(15) M-1) between avidin and biotin. The assembly process of the multilayer films was monitored by using real-time BIA technique based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The multilayer films were also characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and reflection absorption Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results indicate that the growth of the multilayer is uniform. From response of SPR for each layer, the stoichiometry S for the interaction between avidin and bio-Ab is calculated to be 0.37 in the multilayer whereas 0.82 in the first layer. The protein mass concentration for each layer was also obtained. The schematic figure for the multilayer assembly was proposed according to the layer mass, concentration and S value. The utility of the mutilayer films for immunosensing has been investigated via their subsequent interaction with hIgG. The binding ability of the multilayer increased for one to three layers of antibody, and then reach saturation after the fourth layer. These layer-by-layer constructed antibody multilayers enhance the binding ability than covalently immobilized monolayer antibody. This technology can be also used for construction of other thin films for immunosensing and biosensor.

Layer-by-layer assembly of multilayer films of streptavidin and biotinylated antibody was completed on the streptavidin coated surface. Real-time biomolecular interaction analysis (BIA) based on surface plasmon resonance technique was used to monitor the multilayer assembly in solution continuously. The results indicate that the uniform multilayer film can be fabricated successfully based on the strong interaction between streptavidin and biotin. The mean surface mass concentration of each adsorption layer is 1. 32 ng/mm(2) for biotinylated antibody, 2. 93 ng/mm(2) for streptavidin, according to the correlation of SPR response with surface concentration.

The assembly of alternating DNA and positively charged poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) multilayer films by electrostatic layer-by-layer adsorption has been studied. The real-time surface plasmon resonance (BIAcore) technique was used to characterize and monitor the formation of multilayer films in solution in real time continuously. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and UV-vis absorbance measurements were also used to study the film assembly, and linear film growth was observed. All the results indicate that the uniform multilayer can be obtained on the poly(ethylenimine)- (PEI-) coated substrate surface. The kinetics of the adsorption of DNA on PDDA surface was also studied by the real-time BIAcore technique; the observed rate constant was calculated using a Langmuir model (k(obs) = (1.28 +/- 0.08) x 10(-2) s(-1).

Present work deals with the Preparation and characterization of high-k aluminum oxide thin films by atomic layer deposition for gate dielectric applications. The ever-increasing demand for functionality and speed for semiconductor applications requires enhanced performance, which is achieved by the continuous miniaturization of CMOS dimensions. Because of this miniaturization, several parameters, such as the dielectric thickness, come within reach of their physical limit. As the required oxide thickness approaches the sub- l nm range, SiO 2 become unsuitable as a gate dielectric because its limited physical thickness results in excessive leakage current through the gate stack, affecting the long-term reliability of the device. This leakage issue is solved in the 45 mn technology node by the integration of high-k based gate dielectrics, as their higher k-value allows a physically thicker layer while targeting the same capacitance and Equivalent Oxide Thickness (EOT). Moreover, Intel announced that Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) would be applied to grow these materials on the Si substrate. ALD is based on the sequential use of self-limiting surface reactions of a metallic and oxidizing precursor. This self-limiting feature allows control of material growth and properties at the atomic level, which makes ALD well-suited for the deposition of highly uniform and conformal layers in CMOS devices, even if these have challenging 3D topologies with high aspect-ratios. ALD has currently acquired the status of state-of-the-art and most preferred deposition technique, for producing nano layers of various materials of technological importance. This technique can be adapted to different situations where precision in thickness and perfection in structures are required, especially in the microelectronic scenario.

The layer-by-layer deposition of polymers onto surfaces allows the fabrication of multilayered materials for a wide range of applications, from drug delivery to biosensors. This work describes the analysis of complex formation between poly(acrylic acid) and methylcellulose in aqueous solutions using Biacore, a surface plasmon resonance analytical technique, traditionally used to examine biological interactions. This technique characterized the layer-by-layer deposition of these polymers on the surface of a Biacore sensor chip. The results were subsequently used to optimize the experimental conditions for sequential layer deposition on glass slides. The role of the solution pH and poly(acrylic acid) molecular weight on the formation of interpolymer multilayered coatings was researched, and showed that the optimal deposition of the polymer complexes was achieved at pHs ≤2.5 with a poly(acrylic acid) molecular weight of 450 kDa.

The control of size and shape of metallic nanoparticles is a fundamental goal in nanochemistry, and crucial for applications exploiting nanoscale properties of materials. We present here an approach to the synthesis of gold nanoparticles mediated by glucose oxidase (GOD) immobilized on solid substrates using the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technique. The LbL films contained four alternated layers of chitosan and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS), with GOD in the uppermost bilayer adsorbed on a fifth chitosan layer: (chitosan/PSS)(4)/(chitosan/GOD). The films were inserted into a solution containing gold salt and glucose, at various pHs. Optimum conditions were achieved at pH 9, producing gold nanoparticles of ca. 30 nm according to transmission electron microscopy. A comparative study with the enzyme in solution demonstrated that the synthesis of gold nanoparticles is more efficient using immobilized GOD. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Silica nanoparticles were applied onto the fiber surface of an interbonded three-dimensional polycaprolactone fibrous tissue scaffold by an electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. The nanoparticle layer was found to improve the fiber wettability and surface roughness. Osteoblast cells were cultured on the fibrous scaffolds to evaluate the biological compatibility. The silica nanoparticle coated scaffold showed enhanced cell attachment, proliferation, and alkaline phosphatase activities. The overall results suggested that interbonded fibrous scaffold with silica nanoparticulate coating could be a promising scaffolding candidate for various applications in bone repair and regeneration.

Rapid Prototyping Techniques (RPT) have evolved over the last decade. Novel RP techniques are being developed to improve the overall properties of parts manufactured using RPT. One such technique is the Curved layer fused deposition modeling (CLFDM) which has been developed based on the conventional Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technique. The CLFDM technique has gained significant amount of attention as a result of its advantages such as increased flexural strength, reduction of the stair-stepping effect and the reduction in the number of layers, especially for thin shell-like structures. This paper studies the effects of fill gap (FG) on flexural strength and bead dimension, middle-plane cross section profiles and the fracture surface and compares the results to parts made using the traditional planar layer-by-layer approach. Also, in the end some meaningful and interesting future study areas both in hardware design and software development for the CLFDM are proposed.
