The study of ultra-cold atomic gases is one of the most active field in contemporary physics. The main motivation for the interest in this field consists in the possibility to use ultracold gases to simulate in a controlled way quantum many-body systems of relevance to other fields of physics, or to create novel quantum systems with unusual physical properties. An example of the latter are Bose-Fermi mixtures with a tunable pairing interaction between bosons and fermions. In this work, we study with many-body diagrammatic methods the properties of this kind of mixture in two spatial dimensions, extending previous work for three dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures. At zero temperature, we focus specifically on the competition between boson condensation and the pairing of bosons and fermions into molecules. By a numerical solution of the main equations resulting by our many-body diagrammatic formalism, we calculate and present results for several thermodynamic quantities of interest. Differences and similarities between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases are pointed out. Finally, our new results are applied to discuss a recent proposal for creating a p-wave superfluid in Bose-Fermi mixtures with the fermionic molecules which form for sufficiently strong Bose-Fermi attraction.

In this work the fundamental ideas to study properties of QFTs with the functional Renormalization Group are presented and some examples illustrated. First the Wetterich equation for the effective average action and its flow in the local potential approximation (LPA) for a single scalar field is derived. This case is considered to illustrate some techniques used to solve the RG fixed point equation and study the properties of the critical theories in D dimensions. In particular the shooting methods for the ODE equation for the fixed point potential as well as the approach which studies a polynomial truncation with a finite number of couplings, which is convenient to study the critical exponents. We then study novel cases related to multi field scalar theories, deriving the flow equations for the LPA truncation, both without assuming any global symmetry and also specialising to cases with a given symmetry, using truncations based on polynomials of the symmetry invariants. This is used to study possible non perturbative solutions of critical theories which are extensions of known perturbative results, obtained in the epsilon expansion below the upper critical dimension.

Ultracold dilute gases occupy an important role in modern physics and they are employed to verify fundamental quantum theories in most branches of theoretical physics. The scope of this thesis work is the study of Bose-Fermi (BF) mixtures at zero temperature with a tunable pairing between bosons and fermions. The mixtures are treated with diagrammatic quantum many-body methods based on the so-called T-matrix formalism. Starting from the Fermi-polaron limit, I will explore various values of relative concentrations up to mixtures with a majority of bosons, a case barely considered in previous works. An unexpected quantum phase transition is found to occur in a certain range of BF coupling for mixture with a slight majority of bosons. The mechanical stability of mixtures has been analysed, when the boson-fermion interaction is changed from weak to strong values, in the light of experimental results recently obtained for a double-degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of 23 Na - 40 K. A possible improvement in the description of the boson-boson repulsion based on Popov's theory is proposed. Finally, the effects of a harmonic trapping potential are described, with a comparison with the experimental data for the condensate fraction recently obtained for a trapped 23 Na - 40 K mixture.

This thesis project is framed in the research field of Physics Education and aims to contribute to the reflection on the importance of disciplinary identities in addressing interdisciplinarity through the lens of the Nature of Science (NOS). In particular, the study focuses on the module on the parabola and parabolic motion, which was designed within the EU project IDENTITIES. The project aims to design modules to innovate pre-service teacher education according to contemporary challenges, focusing on interdisciplinarity in curricular and STEM topics (especially between physics, mathematics and computer science). The modules are designed according to a model of disciplines and interdisciplinarity that the project IDENTITIES has been elaborating on two main theoretical frameworks: the Family Resemblance Approach (FRA), reconceptualized for the Nature of science (Erduran & Dagher, 2014), and the boundary crossing and boundary objects framework by Akkerman and Bakker (2011). The main aim of the thesis is to explore the impact of this interdisciplinary model in the specific case of the implementation of the parabola and parabolic motion module in a context of preservice teacher education. To reach this purpose, we have analyzed some data collected during the implementation in order to investigate, in particular, the role of the FRA as a learning tool to: a) elaborate on the concept of “discipline”, within the broader problem to define interdisciplinarity; b) compare the epistemic core of physics and mathematics; c) develop epistemic skills and interdisciplinary competences in student-teachers. The analysis of the data led us to recognize three different roles played by the FRA: FRA as epistemological activator, FRA as scaffolding for reasoning and navigating (inhabiting) the complexity, and FRA as lens to investigate the relationship between physics and mathematics in the historical case.

We investigate the potential of a high-energy muon collider in measuring the muon Yukawa coupling (y_μ) in the production of two, three and four heavy bosons via muon-antimuon annihilations. We study the sensitivity of these processes to deviations of y_μ from the Standard Model prediction, parametrized by an effective dimension-6 operator in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework. We also consider the κ framework, in which the deviation is simply parametrized by a strength modification of the μ+μ−h vertex alone. Both frameworks lead to an energy enhancement of the cross sections with one or more vector bosons, although the κ framework yields stronger effects, especially for the production of four bosons. On the contrary, for purely-Higgs final states the cross section is suppressed in the κ framework, while it is extremely sensitive to deviations in the SMEFT. We show that the triple-Higgs production is the most sensitive process to spot new physics effects on y_μ.

This study reports on the successful use of magnetic albumin nanosphere (MAN) with in vivo magnetohyperthermia (MHT) in a mouse Ehrlich tumor. Maghemite nanoparticles (8.9 nm average diameter) were encapsulated within MAN (73.0 nm average diameter). Ehrlich tumor obtained after implantation of tumor cells in the subcutaneous tissue of mice was used as a model throughout this study. MHT was performed with MAN (40 mu L) containing 1.2 x 10(15) particle/mL and 40 Oe amplitude ac magnetic field oscillating at 1 MHz. Animals not treated, treated with MAN, or exposed to the ac field were used as controls. Histopathological analysis was carried out after 2, 5, or 11 days of tumor implantation. We found that the MHT most efficient condition was obtained while applying the ac field protocol twice a day during three consecutive days. Further, in this ac field-treated group no proliferation cells were detected. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi: 10.1063/1.3559498]

A buried conducting layer of metal/polymer nanocomposite was formed by very low energy gold ion implantation into polymethylmethacrylate. The conducting layer is similar to 3 nm deep and of width similar to 1 nm. In situ resistivity measurements were performed as the implantation proceeded, and the conductivity thus obtained as a function of buried gold concentration. The measured conductivity obeys the behavior well established for composites in the percolation regime. The critical concentration, below which the polymer remains an insulator, is attained at a dose similar to 1.0 x 10(16) atoms/cm(2) of implanted gold ions. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

We study the transport properties of HgTe-based quantum wells containing simultaneously electrons and holes in a magnetic field B. At the charge neutrality point (CNP) with nearly equal electron and hole densities, the resistance is found to increase very strongly with B while the Hall resistivity turns to zero. This behavior results in a wide plateau in the Hall conductivity sigma(xy) approximate to 0 and in a minimum of diagonal conductivity sigma(xx) at nu = nu(p) - nu(n) = 0, where nu(n) and nu(p) are the electron and hole Landau level filling factors. We suggest that the transport at the CNP point is determined by electron-hole ""snake states'' propagating along the nu = 0 lines. Our observations are qualitatively similar to the quantum Hall effect in graphene as well as to the transport in a random magnetic field with a zero mean value.

The magnetic europium chalcogenide semiconductors EuTe and EuSe are investigated by the spectroscopy of second harmonic generation (SHG) in the vicinity of the optical band gap formed by transitions involving the 4f and 5d electronic orbitals of the magnetic Eu(2+) ions. In these materials with centrosymmetric crystal lattice the electric-dipole SHG process is symmetry forbidden so that no signal is observed in zero magnetic field. Signal appears, however, in applied magnetic field with the SHG intensity being proportional to the square of magnetization. The magnetic field and temperature dependencies of the induced SHG allow us to introduce a type of nonlinear optical susceptibility determined by the magnetic-dipole contribution in combination with a spontaneous or induced magnetization. The experimental results can be described qualitatively by a phenomenological model based on a symmetry analysis and are in good quantitative agreement with microscopic model calculations accounting for details of the electronic energy and spin structure.
