Emmy Noether: her heritage

Emmy Noether is my role model for the following reasons. She is one of the most important mathematician and physicists of the 20 century; She fought to be a scientist in times where women were not allowed to be one; She was a leader that gathered around her a large school of students and collaborators. In the lecture these reasons will be substantiated with historical facts. In addition, a general assessment of the significance of her ideas and works, from her times until today, will be advanced.

Social Networking on Mobile Environment on top of PeerHood

Social networking and social networking sites have gained popularity among internet users during the past few years. Social networks fulfill the need of users to stay connected to friends and other people interested in the same issues. Combining social networks to the mobile environment is a growing interest of mobile device users as it allows the users to be in their online social community despite their mobility. This thesis highlights the basics of mobile environment, social networking and PeerHood and introduces a new approach of social networking on mobile environment, which is a new concept in mobile social networking. This approach is based on dynamic group discovery in accordance to some common user interests and management in the PeerHood environment. A reference implementation of a social networking application built on top of PeerHood is presented and it is tested and analyzed to understand the social networking on mobile environment and the new concept of dynamic group discovery in it.

Built environment and elderly population health: a comprehensive literature review

Global population aging over recent years has been linked to poorer health outcomes and higher healthcare expenditure. Policies focusing on healthy aging are currently being developed but a complete understanding of health determinants is needed to guide these efforts. The built environment and other external factors have been added to the International Classification of Functioning as important determinants of health and disability. Although the relationship between the built environment and health has been widely examined in working age adults, research focusing on elderly people is relatively recent. In this review, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence on the built environment and health in the elderly.

1000 V jakelujännitteen käyttömahdollisuudet Kymenlaakson Sähköverkko Oy:ssä

Kymenlaakson Sähköverkko Oy:n 20/0,4 kV tekniikalla toteutettu sähkönjakeluverkko on monin paikoin saavuttamassa pitoaikansa loppua. Sähkönjakeluverkko sijaitsee pääasiassa haja-asutusalueilla ja on pääosin avojohtotekniikalla rakennettua. Haja-asutusalueilla 20 kV sähköverkko sisältää paljon lyhyitä 1–5 km pituisia johtohaaroja. Tässä diplomityössä selvitettiin 20/1/0,4 kV sähkönjakelujärjestelmän käyttömahdollisuuksia Kymenlaakson Sähköverkko Oy:n sähkönjakeluverkossa. Työssä vertailtiin erilaisilla verkostoratkaisuilla saatavia elinkaarikustannuksia perusparannus- ja uudisrakennuskohteissa. Tutkimuksen perusteella Kymenlaakson Sähköverkko Oy:n sähkönjakeluverkossa on potentiaalia 1000 V jakelujännitteen käytölle. Työssä perehdyttiin myös 1000 V verkostokomponenttien merkitsemiseen ja verkkoyhtiön tekemiin 1000 V verkon tarkastuksiin.

Komponenttikirjasto verkkosivujen suunnitteluun

Tärkeänä osana Internet-sivujen toteutusta on niiden huolellinen suunnittelu. Käyttöliittymäsuunnittelun työvälineinä Internet-sivujen toteuttamisessa käytetään apuna hahmotelmia ja erilaisia prototyyppejä. Näiden avulla sivuston suunnitelmaa selkeytetään yhteistyössä asiakkaan ja tulevien käyttäjien kanssa. Tässä diplomityössä toteutetaan komponenttikirjasto verkkosivujen suunnitteluun Uoma Oy nimiselle yritykselle. Kirjastoon tulevia komponentteja kartoitetaan analysoimalla toteutettuja projekteja. Työssä myös selvitetään komponenttien laatukriteerit ja toteutetaan kirjaston komponentit. Kirjaston laatua ja tehokkuutta arvioidaan toteuttamalla mallisivusto. Työ osoittaa, että käyttämällä kirjastoa saadaan sekä laadullista hyötyä että parannetaan tehokkuutta, verrattuna yrityksessä aiemmin käytettyyn tapaan työskennellä. Kirjastoa voidaan käyttää monipuolisesti eri suunnitteluvaiheiden tarpeisiin.

Tuotannon tunnuslukujen analysointi ja kehittäminen kourukoneilla

Sisäisen suorituskyvyn tehostaminen on yrityksille jatkuvan kehityksen prosessi. Diplomityön tarkoituksena oli selvittää Paroc Oy Ab:n kourukoneiden suorituskykymittarit sekä analysoida ja kehittää niitä. Lisäksi selvitettiin suorituskykyä kuvaavat raporttimallit eri tuotantopaikkakunnilta ja kehitettiin niitä. Teoriaosuudessa kerrotaan, mitä suorituskyvyllä tarkoitetaan sekä käydään läpi sen eri osa-alueita. Siinä esitetään myös suorituskyvyn mittaamista sekä kuinka mittareita suunnitellaan ja rakennetaan. Työn painopiste on kuitenkin empiirisessä osuudessa, jossa ensin kerrotaan työn kohteena olevien kourukoneiden tuotantoprosessi ja tämän jälkeen paneudutaan suorituskykymittareihin ja niiden analysointiin sekä raporttimalleihin. Lopuksi esitetään työn aikana esille nousseita kehitysehdotuksia. Tunnuslukujen selvittämisen tuloksena havaittiin, että kirjallisuus tukee käytössä olevia mittareita. Työssä kerättiin tuotantodataa kourukoneilta usean vuoden aikajaksolta. Datasta valmisteltiin mallit, joita käytettiin mittarien analysointiin. Analysoinnin tuloksena kävi ilmi, että mittarien tarjoama tieto oli joiltakin osin puutteellista ja näin ollen päätöksentekijälle harhaanjohtavaa. Raporttimallit eivät olleet yhtenäisiä paikkakuntien välillä, mikä toi epävarmuutta tuloksiin laskentaperiaatteiden osalta. Työn lopputuloksena tehtiin käytössä oleville suorituskykymittareille kehitysehdotuksia tarkemman ja laadukkaamman tiedon takaamiseksi. Työssä esitettiin myös uusia mittariehdotuksia. Raporttimallit yhtenäistettiin uuden tuotannonohjausjärjestelmän tuomien mahdollisuuksien myötä.

Analysis of private natural heritage reserves as a conservation strategy for the biodiversity of the cocoa region of the southern State of Bahia, Brazil

Brazil was the first country in Latin America to establish and regulate this type of reserve, and there are currently more than 700 Private Nature Heritage Reserves (RPPN in Portuguese) officially recognized by either federal or state environmental agencies. Together, these RPPN protect more than a half million hectares of land in the country. The coastal forests in the southern part of Bahia State extend 100 to 200 km inland, gradually changing in physiognomy as they occupy the dryer inland areas. The coastal forest has been subjected to intense deforestation, and currently occupies less than 10% of its original area. For this work the creation processes of the RPPN were consulted to obtain the data creation time, size of property, the condition of the remaining forest, succession chain and the last paid tax. After that, interviews with the owners were made to confirm this data. Sixteen RPPN have been established in this region until 2005. Their sizes vary from 4.7 to 800 ha. Ten of these RPPN are located within state or federal conservation areas or their buffer zones. In spite of the numerous national and international conservation strategies and environmental policies focused on the region, the present situation of the cocoa zone is threatening the conservation of the region's natural resources. The establishment of private reserves in the cocoa region could conceivably improve these conservation efforts. This type of reserve can be established under a uniform system supported by federal legislation, and could count on private organizations.

World Heritage of the Kvarken Archipelago : Echoes of the Ice Age

The Kvarken Archipelago is Finland’s first Unesco Natural Heritage Site. The story of the Kvarken Archipelago began about 10.000 years ago when the melting of the continental ice sheet as it retreated gave rise to this unique archipelago. The land once forced down by the mass of ice is now gradually rising and continuously creating new landscapes. People, animals and plants have learnt to adjust to their changing conditions in exceptional ways. The Ice Age may be over in Kvarken, but the drama still continues to unfold.
