The stabilization of alumina suspensions is key to the development of high-performance materials for the ceramic industry, which has motivated extensive research into synthetic polymers used as stabilizers. In this study, mimosa tannin extract and a chitosan derivative, that is, macromolecules obtained from renewable resources, are shown to be promising to replace synthetic polymers, yielding less viscous suspensions with smaller particles and greater fluidity, that is, more homogeneous suspensions that may lead to better-quality products. The functional groups of tannin present in mimosa extract and N,N,N-trimethylchitosan (TMC) are capable of establishing interactions with the alumina surface, thus leading to repulsion between the particles mainly due to steric and electrosteric mechanisms, respectively. The stabilization of the suspension induced by either TMC or mimosa tannin was confirmed by a considerable decrease in viscosity and average particle size, in comparison with alumina suspensions without stabilizing agents. The viscosity/average particle size decreased by 49/84% and 52/87% for suspensions with TMC and mimosa tannin, respectively. In addition, the increase in the absolute zeta potential upon addition of either TMC or mimosa tannin extract, especially at high pHs, points to an increased stability of the suspension. The feasibility of using derivatives of macromolecules from renewable sources to stabilize aqueous alumina suspensions was therefore demonstrated. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, composites based on a phenolic matrix and untreated- and treated sisal fibers were prepared. The treated sisal fibers used were those reacted with NaOH 2% solution and esterified using benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA). These treated fibers were modified with the objective of improving the adhesion of the fiber-matrix interface, which in turn influences the properties of the composites. BTDA was chosen as the esterifying agent to take advantage of the possibility of introducing; the polar and aromatic groups that are also present in the matrix structure into the surface of the fiber, which could then intensify the interactions occurring in the fiber-matrix interface. The fibers were then analyzed by SEM and FTIR to ascertain their chemical composition. The results showed that the fibers had been successfully modified. The composites (reinforced with 15%, w/w of 3.0 cm length sisal fiber randomly distributed) were characterized by SEM, impact strength, and water absorption capacity. In the tests conducted, the response of the composites was affected both by properties of the matrix and the fibers, besides the interfacial properties of the fiber-matrix. Overall, the results showed that the fiber treatment resulted in a composite that was less hygroscopic although with somewhat lower impact strength, when compared with the composite reinforced with untreated sisal fibers. Different compositions of visible-light-curable triethylene glycol dimethacrylate/bisglycidyl methacrylate copolymers used in dental resin formulations were prepared through copolymerization photoinitiated by a camphorquinone/ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate system irradiated with an Ultrablue IS light-emitting diode. The obtained copolymers were evaluated with differential scanning calorimetry. From the data for the heat of polymerization, before and after light exposure, obtained from exothermic differential scanning calorimetry curves, the light polymerization efficiency or degree of conversion of double bonds was calculated. The glass-transition temperature also was determined before and after photopolymerization. After the photopolymerization, the glass-transi-tion temperature was not well defined because of the breadth of the transition region associated with the properties of the photocured dimethacrylate. The glass-transition temperature after photopolymerization was determined experimentally and compared with the values determined with the Fox equation. In all mixtures, the experimental value was lower than the calculated value. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphological differences in the prepared copolymer structures. Trypanosomes are flagellated protozoa responsible for serious parasitic diseases that have been classified by the World Health Organization as tropical sicknesses of major importance. One important drug target receiving considerable attention is the enzyme glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase from the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease (T. cruzi Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (TcGAPDH); EC 1.2.1.12). TcGAPDH is a key enzyme in the glycolytic pathway of T. cruzi and catalyzes the oxidative phosphorylation of D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P) to 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate (1,3-BPG) coupled to the reduction of oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, (NAD(+)) to NADH, the reduced form. Herein, we describe the cloning of the T. cruzi gene for TcGAPDH into the pET-28a(+) vector, its expression as a tagged protein in Escherichia coli, purification and kinetic characterization. The His(6)-tagged TcGAPDH was purified by affinity chromatography. Enzyme activity assays for the recombinant His(6)-TcGAPDH were carried out spectrophotometrically to determine the kinetic parameters. The apparent Michaelis-Menten constant (K(M)(app)) determined for D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and NAD(+) were 352 +/- 21 and 272 +/- 25 mu M, respectively, which were consistent with the values for the untagged enzyme reported in the literature. We have demonstrated by the use of Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) that this vector modification resulted in activity preserved for a higher period. We also report here the use of response surface methodology (RSM) to determine the region of optimal conditions for enzyme activity. A quadratic model was developed by RSM to describe the enzyme activity in terms of pH and temperature as independent variables. According to the RMS contour plots and variance analysis, the maximum enzyme activity was at 29.1 degrees C and pH 8.6. Above 37 degrees C, the enzyme activity starts to fall, which may be related to previous reports that the quaternary structure begins a process of disassembly. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. The enzyme dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) has been suggested as a promising target for the design of trypanocidal agents. We report here the discovery of novel inhibitors of Trypanosoma cruzi DHODH identified by a combination of virtual screening and ITC methods. Monitoring of the enzymatic reaction in the presence of selected ligands together with structural information obtained from X-ray crystallography analysis have allowed the identification and validation of a novel site of interaction (S2 site). This has provided important structural insights for the rational design of T cruzi and Leishmania major DHODH inhibitors. The most potent compound (1) in the investigated series inhibits TcDHODH enzyme with K(i)(app) value of 19.28 mu M and possesses a ligand efficiency of 0.54 kcal mol(-1) per non-H atom. Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric Analysis, and X-ray Diffractometry have been used to investigate the rigid, semi rigid, and soft polyurethane (PU) forms, which were developed by the Group of Analytic Chemistry and Technology of Polymers - USF - Sao Carlos. The -NCO/-OH ratios were 0.6, 0.5, and 0.3% for rigid, semi rigid, and soft PUs, respectively, showing that different ratios cause differences in thermal behaviors and crystalline structures of the synthesized PU resins. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the storage time on the thermal properties of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate/2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxy-prop-1-oxy)-phenyl]propane bisphenyl-alpha-glycidyl ether dimethacrylate (TB) copolymers used in formulations of dental resins after photopolymerization. The TB copolymers were prepared by photopolymerization with an Ultrablue IS light-emitting diode, stored in the dark for 160 days at 37 degrees C, and characterized with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection. DSC curves indicated the presence of an exothermic peak, confirming that the reaction was not completed during the photopolymerization process. This exothermic peak became smaller as a function of the storage time and was shifted at higher temperatures. In DMA studies, a plot of the loss tangent versus the temperature initially showed the presence of two well-defined peaks. The presence of both peaks confirmed the presence of residual monomers that were not converted during the photopolymerization process. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thioxanthone-sensitized photodegradation of poly(alkyl methacrylate) films [alkyl = methyl, ethyl, butyl, and hexyl] was studied using near UV-vis light. The photooxidation process continued even after the total consumption of the sensitizer, possibly due to the excitation of the ketyl groups formed during the first stages of the process. The rate of oxidation, as well as the formation of hydroxy, peroxy, and ketyl groups was faster for polymers with larger ester groups. The decrease of the molecular weight of the degradated polymers was also larger for the hexyl substituted polymer. The side-chain size effect was attributed to the larger amount of secondary hydrogens available for abstraction by the triplet state of thioxanthone, present in the larger ester groups. The lower glass transition temperature of the hexyl substituted polymer allows a better diffusion of oxygen to the deeper layers of the films that also contributes to the faster photodegradation rate. Program SOLVEJ är ett användarvänligt program som visar solens vandring över himlavalvet vid upp till fem valfria datum och vid valfri ort. Programmet är utvecklat av två skäl. För det första, att demonstreras för en intresserad allmänhet som del av vandringsutställning om solenergi, vilken är initierad och utarbetad av SERC. För det andra, att användas av solenerglintressenter för att snabbt få en uppfattning om solinstrålningen på en ort vid olika tidpunkter på året.Indata till programmet ges från tangentbordet. Som svar på frågor skrivs för vilken ort diagrammet skall gälla, max fem datum, ortens latitud och longitud, som anges positiv i västlig riktning, samt tidszonen. Varje uppgift avslutas med tryck på tangenten ENTER. Programmet kommer nu att rita ett koordinatsystem på skärmen. Första axeln visar vädersträcken, norr, öster, söder, väster och norr, varje delstreck utgör 10 grader. För södra halvklotet byter norr och söder plats. Andra axeln visar höjden över horisonten i grader, 0 till 90 grader och 10 grader för varje delstreck. Efter några sekunder ritas diagrammet upp med solhöjden som funktion av väderstrecket och varje hel timme markerad. Se fig. 1-4. Slutligen frågas efter om diagrammet skall ritas ut på printer. SOLVEJ avbrytes med att trycka CTRL+BREAK.SOLVEJ är skrivet i Quick-BASIC (se App. 1) och leveras både som källkod och körklar version. Lämplig dator är IBM-kompatibel AT med EGA- eller VGA-skärmkort (ej Herkules Lämplig printer är IBM Proprinter eller liknande matrisskrivare, kopplad till LPT1 på kommunikationskortet.Till grund för beräkningarna har använts artikeln On Calculating the Position of the Sun, publicerad i nr. 1 1988 av The International Journal of Ambient Energy. Fem empiriska ekvationer beträffande beräkningar av solens position har studerats för att undersöka deras tillförlitlighet. Felaktigheter på fem grader eller mer kan uppträda om man använder sig av de enkla ekvationer som kan hittas solenergi-böcker och som inte kräver tillgång till dator. FORTRAN-rutinen SUNAE2 (se App. 2) beräknar solpositionen med noggrannast kända metod. Program SOLVEJ är en utveckling av SUNAE2.

This thesis focuses on the adaptation of formal education to people’s technology- use patterns, theirtechnology-in-practice, where the ubiquitous use of mobile technologies is central. The research question is: How can language learning practices occuring in informal learning environments be effectively integrated with formal education through the use of mobile technology? The study investigates the technical, pedagogical, social and cultural challenges involved in a design science approach. The thesis consists of four studies. The first study systematises MALL (mobile-assisted language learning) research. The second investigates Swedish and Chinese students’ attitudes towards the use of mobile technology in education. The third examines students’ use of technology in an online language course, with a specific focus on their learning practices in informal learning contexts and their understanding of how this use guides their learning. Based on the findings, a specifically designed MALL application was built and used in two courses. Study four analyses the app use in terms of students’ perceived level of self-regulation and structuration. The studies show that technology itself plays a very important role in reshaping peoples’ attitudes and that new learning methods are coconstructed in a sociotechnical system. Technology’s influence on student practices is equally strong across borders. Students’ established technologies-in-practice guide the ways they approach learning. Hence, designing effective online distance education involves three interrelated elements: technology, information, and social arrangements. This thesis contributes to mobile learning research by offering empirically and theoretically grounded insights that shift the focus from technology design to design of information systems.

Ornitina decarboxilase (ODC) (EC 4.1.1.17) é a primeira enzima que desencadeia a síntese das poliaminas putrescina, espermidina e espermina nas células. As poliaminas são cátions alifáticos envolvidos no controle de crescimento e são requeridas para uma variedade de eventos biológicos como síntese de proteína, replicação do DNA e divisão celular. No presente estudo, a atividade da ODC foi medida em ovo, larva, pupa, fêmea jovem e adulta de Anastrepha fraterculus. Durante o desenvolvimento de A. fraterculus, a atividade da ODC apresentou flutuações. Entre os estágios anteriores à emergência, o ovo teve a mais alta atividade específica, provavelmente devido à embriogênese que é caracterizada pela alta taxa de divisão celular. A atividade da ODC foi também altamente significativa em ovários e corpo gorduroso de fêmeas jovens possivelmente devido ao avanço da oogênese e vitelogênese. Parâmetros cinéticos (Km app e Vmax) para atividade da ODC foram determinados em pupa, larva e ovário de fêmeas jovens e apresentaram grande variação. A guanosina trifosfato (GTP) demonstrou afetar grandemente estes parâmetros cinéticos, sugerindo estarem ocorrendo modificações pós-traducionais. Fêmeas jovens (4 dias) de A. fraterculus também foram analisadas quanto ao efeito do estresse de temperatura (6ºC e 20/6ºC) e da aplicação tópica do hormônio juvenil isolados ou em conjunto. . Os principais resultados foram que a concentração de 500 ng e os tempos de incubação de 3, 7 e 18 horas aumentaram a atividade da ODC. As fêmeas mantidas a 6ºC e 20/6ºC tiveram atividade da ODC mais alta do que as fêmeas mantidas a 25ºC. O tempo de incubação de 1 hora com o HJ aumentou a atividade da ODC no tratamento de 6ºC, quando comparado com fêmeas mantidas apenas com o estresse de temperatura sem a adição do hormônio (controle). No entanto, no tratamento das fêmeas mantidas a 20/6ºC, somente os tempos de 3 e 18 horas de incubação com o HJ demonstraram aumento na atividade da ODC quando comparadas com o tempo de incubação de 1 hora e com as fêmeas mantidas sem a adição do hormônio (controle). Os machos não apresentaram diferença na atividade da ODC quando submetidos ao estresse de temperatura de 6ºC, mas as medidas do apódema ejaculatório foram maiores a 25ºC que a 6ºC. Estes resultados podem ser considerados como parte de um processo adaptativo a mudanças ambientais. Por último, observamos que as medidas dos ovários (comprimento e largura) de fêmeas jovens mantidas com o inibidor da ODC, -difluormetilornitina (-DFMO; 50mM) são diferentes significativamente quando comparadas com às medidas das fêmeas controle sem o inibidor. O conjunto desses resultados indica a importância da relação entre ODC, HJ e estresse de temperatura para a A. fraterculus. Como esta mosca é uma das piores pragas para a fruticultura brasileira, estes dados, além de contribuírem para um maior conhecimento de sua biologia básica, poderão também ser usados para a escolha de melhores estratégias de controle populacional.

Neste artigo se desenvolvem alternativas de abordagem multicritério visando à seleção de municípios para a implementação de políticas públicas de educação. Considerando que a situação da educação no Brasil apresenta grande variabilidade, o que impacta as demandas educacionais por políticas públicas de educação de forma diferente em diferentes regiões, verifica-se a necessidade de critérios objetivos para a seleção de pontos de aplicação de recursos para o combate a desigualdades nessa área. Em particular, se discute o emprego do Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano como fundamento para decisões na área educacional. Além disso, visa-se a estabelecer condições para a comparação dessas situações segundo diferentes critérios utilizados para fundamentar políticas públicas de educação.
