ABSTRACT; System integration is a necessity progressively more required due to the business demand and competitiveness. It is possible to respond to the latter facts with technology, by following it and developing it. This study proposes a technological solution for the abovementioned facts. The case to be addressed is the need to renovate the port management system in a nationwide scale, assuring simultaneously the continuity of the business and the implementation of new functionalities that allow for this platform to be utterly independent and applicable to other systems and/or adaptable to other organizations in the future. SOA, Service Oriented Architecture, was the theory adopted to guarantee the simplification of the maritime traffic, by harmonizing the processes and the procedures among the several ports, especially concerning the interconnection and interoperability, and the electronic sharing and exchange of information referent to processes amongst the numerous members of the maritime and port community.

To store, update and retrieve data from database management systems (DBMS), software architects use tools, like call-level interfaces (CLI), which provide standard functionalities to interact with DBMS. However, the emerging of NoSQL paradigm, and particularly new NoSQL DBMS providers, lead to situations where some of the standard functionalities provided by CLI are not supported, very often due to their distance from the relational model or due to design constraints. As such, when a system architect needs to evolve, namely from a relational DBMS to a NoSQL DBMS, he must overcome the difficulties conveyed by the features not provided by NoSQL DBMS. Choosing the wrong NoSQL DBMS risks major issues with components requesting non-supported features. This paper focuses on how to deploy features that are not so commonly supported by NoSQL DBMS (like Stored Procedures, Transactions, Save Points and interactions with local memory structures) by implementing them in standard CLI.

Porous polymer particles are used in an extraordinarily wide range of advanced and everyday applications, from combinatorial chemistry, solid-phase organic synthesis and polymer-supported reagents, to environmental analyses and the purification of drinking water. The installation and exploitation of functional chemical handles on the particles is often a prerequisite for their successful exploitation, irrespective of the application and the porous nature of the particles. New methodology for the chemical modification of macroreticular polymers is the primary focus of the work presented in this thesis. Porous polymer microspheres decorated with a diverse range of functional groups were synthesised by the post-polymerisation chemical modification of beaded polymers via olefin cross metathesis. The polymer microspheres were prepared by the precipitation polymerisation of divinylbenzene in porogenic (pore-forming) solvents; the olefin cross-metathesis (CM) functionalisation reactions exploited the pendent (polymer-bound) vinyl groups that were not consumed by polymerisation. Olefin CM reactions involving the pendent vinyl groups were performed in dichloromethane using second-generation Grubbs catalyst (Grubbs II), and a wide range of coupling partners used. The results obtained indicate that high quality, porous polymer microspheres synthesised by precipitation polymerisation in near-θ solvents can be functionalised by olefin CM under very mild conditions to install a diverse range of chemical functionalities into a common polydivinylbenzene precursor. Gel-type polymer microspheres were prepared by the precipitation copolymerisation reaction of divinylbenzene and allyl methacrylate in neat acetonitrile. The unreacted pendent vinyl groups that were not consumed by polymerisation were subjected to internal and external olefin metathesis-based hypercrosslinking reactions. Internal hypercrosslinking was carried out by using ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reactions in toluene using Grubbs II catalyst. Under these conditions, hypercrosslinked (HXL) polymers with specific surface areas around 500 m2g-1 were synthesised. External hypercrosslinking was attempted by using CM/RCM in the presence of a multivinyl coupling partner in toluene using second-generation Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst. The results obtained indicate that no HXL polymers were obtained. However, during the development of this methodology, a new type of polymerisation was discovered with tetraallylorthosilicate as monomer.

Transcription activator-like effectors (TALEs) are virulence factors, produced by the bacterial plant-pathogen Xanthomonas, that function as gene activators inside plant cells. Although the contribution of individual TALEs to infectivity has been shown, the specific roles of most TALEs, and the overall TALE diversity in Xanthomonas spp. is not known. TALEs possess a highly repetitive DNA-binding domain, which is notoriously difficult to sequence. Here, we describe an improved method for characterizing TALE genes by the use of PacBio sequencing. We present 'AnnoTALE', a suite of applications for the analysis and annotation of TALE genes from Xanthomonas genomes, and for grouping similar TALEs into classes. Based on these classes, we propose a unified nomenclature for Xanthomonas TALEs that reveals similarities pointing to related functionalities. This new classification enables us to compare related TALEs and to identify base substitutions responsible for the evolution of TALE specificities. © 2016, Nature Publishing Group. Current trends in broadband mobile networks are addressed towards the placement of different capabilities at the edge of the mobile network in a centralised way. On one hand, the split of the eNB between baseband processing units and remote radio headers makes it possible to process some of the protocols in centralised premises, likely with virtualised resources. On the other hand, mobile edge computing makes use of processing and storage capabilities close to the air interface in order to deploy optimised services with minimum delay. The confluence of both trends is a hot topic in the definition of future 5G networks. The full centralisation of both technologies in cloud data centres imposes stringent requirements to the fronthaul connections in terms of throughput and latency. Therefore, all those cells with limited network access would not be able to offer these types of services. This paper proposes a solution for these cases, based on the placement of processing and storage capabilities close to the remote units, which is especially well suited for the deployment of clusters of small cells. The proposed cloud-enabled small cells include a highly efficient microserver with a limited set of virtualised resources offered to the cluster of small cells. As a result, a light data centre is created and commonly used for deploying centralised eNB and mobile edge computing functionalities. The paper covers the proposed architecture, with special focus on the integration of both aspects, and possible scenarios of application.

This paper characterizes humic substances (HS) extracted from soil samples collected in the Rio Negro basin in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, particularly investigating their reduction capabilities towards Hg(II) in order to elucidate potential mercury cycling/volatilization in this environment. For this reason, a multimethod approach was used, consisting of both instrumental methods (elemental analysis, EPR, solid-state NMR, FIA combined with cold-vapor AAS of Hg(0)) and statistical methods such as principal component analysis (PCA) and a central composite factorial planning method. The HS under study were divided into groups, complexing and reducing ones, owing to different distribution of their functionalities. The main functionalities (cor)related with reduction of Hg(II) were phenolic, carboxylic and amide groups, while the groups related with complexation of Hg(II) were ethers, hydroxyls, aldehydes and ketones. The HS extracted from floodable regions of the Rio Negro basin presented a greater capacity to retain (to complex, to adsorb physically and/or chemically) Hg(II), while nonfloodable regions showed a greater capacity to reduce Hg(II), indicating that HS extracted from different types of regions contribute in different ways to the biogeochemical mercury cycle in the basin of the mid-Rio Negro, AM, Brazil.

Cementing operations are conducted at different times of the well s life and they have high importance, because the functions are fundamental to keep good properties during a long life of the well, such as, maintain the mechanical stability of the well, to promote the isolation hydraulic and support the tubing. In some situations, the rocky zones have low fractures pressures and require the use of lightweight slurries to prevent the hydrostatic pressure in the formation is greater than the pressure of fracture. There are three ways to reduce the density of cement slurries: exterders water additives, microspheres and foamed slurries. The most used extender water additive is sodium bentonite, which is a clay with a good capacity of water absorption and expansion of its volume, the main disadvantage of this additive is the reduction of the strength. Currently, the use of nanoscale particles has received special attention, mainly because they get new functionalities. Following this trend, this paper aims to use a colloidal solution of nano-silica as an exterders water additives for use in oil wells. Slurries were designed with fixed 13lb/gal density and concentration of nano silica 0.1 gpc; 0.4 gpc; 0.7 and 1gpc, the influence of nano-silica was studied at these levels in isolation and combined varying concentrations of CaCl2,. Tests including rheology, stability, strength, thickening time, porosity and permeability. Besides the API tests, microstructural characterizations were performed after 28 days of the slurries, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

In this paper, a tool to improve vocal tuning in Android devices is presented. This application aims to offer exercises to practice and improve singing skills. The designed tool includes two main functionalities: sound synthesis, to provide with singing sound references, and fundamental frequency analysis, to analize the sound and check if the user sings the right musical note. The well-known Yin algorithm has been selected to perform the fundamental frequency analysis. Three different singing exercises are included: sing single notes, sing intervals and sing a note in order to complete a chord. The system also includes a graphical interface in which musical notation is employed to write down the singing sound. The system has been evaluated in order to test out its correct performance regarding both the analysis and synthesis of musical sounds.
