Aziridinemethanol sulfonate esters react with tetrathiomolybdate 1 to give thiirane derivatives as the major product and cyclic disulfides as minor product under mild reaction conditions via an unprecedented thia-aza-Payne-type rearrangement. Interestingly, when the reaction of I was carried out with 2-aziridino-cyclohexanol derivatives it resulted in the formation of thia-bicyclo[3.1.1]heptane or dithia-bicyclo[3.2.1]octane derivatives.

We have investigated the structure and magnetic properties of the perovskite oxides of the formula La2Fe1-xMn2xCr1-xO6 (0 < x < 1.0). For 0 < x <= 0.5, the members adopt the orthorhombic (Pbnm) structure, where the transition metal atoms are disordered at the 4b sites and the MO6 (M = Fe, Mn, Cr) octahedra become increasingly distorted with increasing x. For 0.65 <= x < 1.0, the members adopt the rhombohedral (R-3c) structure that is similar to LaMnO3+delta (delta >= 0.1) where the MO6 octahedra are undistorted. While the magnetic properties of the latter series are largely similar to the parent LaMnO3+delta arising from the double-exchange (DE) between mixed valent Mn-III/Mn-IV, the magnetic properties of the orthorhombic members show a distinct (albeit weak) ferromagnetism (T-C similar to 200 K) that seems to arise from a Mn-III-mediated superexchange (SE) between Fe-III/Cr-III in the disordered perovskite structure containing Fe-III, Mn-III and Cr-III.

A series of molecular complexes, both co-crystals and salts, of a triazole drug-alprazolam-with carboxylic acids, boric acid, boronic acids, and phenols have been analyzed with respect to heterosynthons present in the crystal structures. In all cases, the triazole ring behaves as an efficient hydrogen bond acceptor with the acidic coformers. The hydrogen bond patterns exhibited with aromatic carboxylic acids were found to depend on the nature and position of the substituents. Being a strong acid, 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid forms a salt with alprazolam. With aliphatic dicarboxylic acids alprazolam forms hydrates and the water molecules play a central role in synthon formation and crystal packing. The triazole ring makes two distinct heterosynthons in the molecular complex with boric acid. Boronic acids and phenols form consistent hydrogen bond patterns, and these are seemingly independent of the substitutional effects. Boronic acids form noncentrosymmetric cyclic synthons, while phenols form O-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds with the triazole ring. Metallic glasses are of interest because of their mechanical properties. They are ductile as well as brittle. This is true of Pd77.5Cu6Si16.5, a ternary glassy alloy. Actually, the most stable metallic glasses are those which are alloys of noble or transition metals A general formula is postulated as T70–80G30-20where T stands for one or several 3d transition elements, and includes the metalloid glass formers. Another general formula is A3B to A5B where B is a metalloid. A computer method utilising the MIGAP computer program of Kaufman is used to calculate the miscibility gap over a range of temperatures. The precipitation of a secondary crystalline phase is postulated around 1500K. This could produce a dispersed phase composite with interesting high temperature-strength properties.

The quaternary system Sb1bTe1bBi1bSe with small amounts of suitable dopants is of interest for the manufacture of thermoelectric modules which exhibit the Peltier and Seebeck effects. This property could be useful in the production of energy from the thermoelectric effect. Other substances are bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) and Sb1bTe1bBi and compounds such as ZnIn2Se4. In the present paper the application of computer programs such as MIGAP of Kaufman is used to indicate the stability of the ternary limits of Sb1bTe1bBi within the temperature ranges of interest, namely 273 K to 300 K.

The compounds CdHgTe and its constituent binaries CdTe, HgTe, and CdHg are semiconductors which are used in thermal, infrared, nuclear, thermoelectric and other photo sensitive devices. The compound CdHgTe has a Sphaleritic structure of possible type A1IIB1IIC6VI. The TERCP program of Kaufman is used to estimate the stable regions of the ternary phase diagram using available thermodynamic data. It was found that there was little variation in stochiometry with temperature. The compositions were calculated for temperatures ranging from 325K to 100K and the compositional limits were Cd13−20Hg12−01Te75−79, Hg varying most. By comparison with a similar compound, Cd In2Te4 of forbidden band width. 88 to .90 e.V., similar properties are postulated for Cd1Hg1Te6 with applications in the infra red region of the spectrum at 300K where this composition is given by TERCP at the limit of stability.

A human primary lung carcinoma cell line (HPL-R1) established from the tumor biopsy of a lung cancer patient, lacking in cytochrome P1-450 [aryl hydrocarbon (benzo[a]pyrene) hydroxylase (AHH)], was cloned and used to obtain variants deficient in the expression of thymidine-kinase via treatment with 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine, and selection for drug resistance phenotype. The variant cell line, precharacterized for thymidine kinase negative phenotype, was transfected with the thymidine kinase gene bearing p R-tk and px1-tk plasmids. Transfections from both the plasmids, demonstrated a frequency of 5.5 X 10(-5). The transfectants showed a 76-100% retention of the transferred phenotype. These data suggest that transfection in variant human cells can approach significant levels of stability observed with rodent cell recipients.

Hemin catalyses the oxidation of dithiothreitol. One mole of oxygen is consumed for every 2 moles of dithiothreitol oxidized and the product is shown by spectral studies to be the intramolecular disulphide. The reaction shows a specificity for dithiol and for free heme moieties. Hemin molecules exhibit cooperativity in oxygen reduction. Oxygen radicals do not seem to be involved. H2O2 is not required for this oxidation of dithiothreitol and does not appear to be an intermediate in the reduction of O2 to H2O. However, an independent minor reaction involving a 2-electron transfer with the formation of H2O2 also occurs. These studies on the hemin-catalyzed oxidation of dithiothreitol provide a chemical model for a direct 4-electron reduction of O2 to H2O.

The details of cage-to-cage migration have been obtained from an analysis of the molecular dynamics trajectory of a probe adsorbate. It is observed that particles utilize the region within a radius of 2 angstrom from the window center but with diffusion taking place predominantly at 1.6 angstrom from the window center and a potential energy of nearly -12 kJ/mol. A barrier of about 0.5 kJ/mol is observed for surface-mediated diffusion. Surprisingly, for diffusion without surface mediation for a particle going from one cage center to another, there is an attractive well near the window instead of a barrier. At low adsorbate concentrations and room temperature, the predominant mode for cage-to-cage migration is surface-mediated diffusion. The analysis suggests that particles slide along the surface of the inner walls of the alpha-cages during migration from one cage to another.

The mechanism of action of ribonuclease (RNase) T1 is still a matter of considerable debate as the results of x-ray, 2-D nmr and site-directed mutagenesis studies disagree regarding the role of the catalytically important residues. Hence computer modelling studies were carried out by energy minimisation of the complexes of RNase T1 and some of its mutants (His40Ala, His40Lys, and Glu58Ala) with the substrate guanyl cytosine (GpC), and of native RNase T1 with the reaction intermediate guanosine 2',3'-cyclic phosphate (G greater than p). The puckering of the guanosine ribose moiety in the minimum energy conformer of the RNase T1-GpC (substrate) complex was found to be O4'-endo and not C3'-endo as in the RNase T1-3'-guanylic acid (inhibitor/product) complex. A possible scheme for the mechanism of action of RNase T1 has been proposed on the basis of the arrangement of the catalytically important amino acid residues His40, Glu58, Arg77, and His92 around the guanosine ribose and the phosphate moiety in the RNase T1-GpC and RNase T1-G greater than p complexes. In this scheme, Glu58 serves as the general base group and His92 as the general acid group in the transphosphorylation step. His40 may be essential for stabilising the negatively charged phosphate moiety in the enzyme-transition state complex.

The finding that peptides containing -amino acid residues give rise to folding patterns hitherto unobserved in -amino acid peptides[1] has stimulated considerable interest in the conformational properties of peptides built from , and residues,[2] as the introduction of additional methylene (CH2) units into peptide chains provides further degrees of conformational freedom.
