Optically active S-alkyl-N, N'-bis((S)-1-phenylethyl) thiouronium salts, abbreviated as (S)-[Cnpetu] Y (where Y is an anion; n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 16), have been prepared and studied by a broad spectrum of analyses. This consists of density, viscosity, and conductivity determination, followed by a discussion of relevant correlations. Unusual trends depending on the S-alkyl chain length were documented for (S)-[Cnpetu][ NTf2] series (where [NTf2] = bis{(trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl} amide), including the viscosity decreasing with increasing chain length, and the conductivity showing a maximum between the S-butyl and the S-hexyl derivative. In addition, a hindered rotamerism of the thiouronium cation in dmso-d(6) solution was recognised by H-1 and C-13 NMR techniques. Thorough analysis of NMR spectra confirmed that the main contribution comes from rotation about the partial double C-S bond. For the first time, a neat thiouronium ionic liquid system has been subjected to quantitative analysis of hindered rotamerism by dynamic NMR coalescence studies, with estimated activation energy for rotation of 63.9 +/- 0.4 kJ mol(-1). Finally, the application of (S)-[C(n)petu] Y salts as chiral discriminating agents for carboxylates by 1H NMR spectroscopy was further investigated, demonstrating the influence of the S-alkyl chain length on chiral recognition; (S)-[C(2)petu][NTf2] ionic liquid with the mandelate anion gave the best results.

High catalytic activity and selectivity has been demonstrated for the oxidation of both aliphatic and aromatic amines to nitriles under benign conditions with dioxygen or air using the Ru2Cl4(az-tpy)(2) complex. The conversion was found to be strongly influenced by the alkyl chain length of the reactant with shorter chain amines found to have lower conversions than those with longer chains. Importantly, by using the ruthenium terpyridine complex functionalized with azulenyl moiety at the 4 position of central pyridine core provided a much higher reactivity catalyst compared with a series of ruthenium terpyridine-based ligand complexes reported. Mechanistic studies using deuterated benzylamine demonstrated the importance of RuOH in this reaction.

Diol reactivity can be manipulated in ionic liquids to selectively give chlorinated or cyclic sulfite/sulfate products depending on the ionic liquid used and the presence or absence of base. In comparison with reactions in dichloromethane, the ionic liquid mediated reactions show greatly improved yields and product stability.

The molar polarisability and molar volume for 71 ionic liquids were extracted from 157 measurements of their refractive index and density, which were then further deconstructed into atomic contributions by means of a Designed Regression analysis. Using this approach, the density and refractive index for any chosen ionic liquid with alkyl-substituted imidazolium cations can be predicted in good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract image.

A new method for ketone enolate C-acylation is described which utilizes alkyl pentafluorophenylcarbonates, thiocarbonates and thionocarbonates as the reactive acylating agents, and MgBr2.Et2O, DMAP and i-Pr2NEt as the reagents for enolization. A wide range of ketones have been observed to undergo clean C-acylation via this protocol.

This paper provides an integrated overview of the factors which control gelation in a family of dendritic gelators based on lysine building blocks. In particular, we establish that higher generation systems are more effective gelators, amide linkages in the dendron are better than carbamates, and long alkyl chain surface groups and a carboxylic acid at the focal point enhance gelation. The gels are best formed in relatively low polarity solvents with no hydrogen bond donor ability and limited hydrogen bond acceptor capacity. The dendrons with acid groups at the focal point can form two component gels with diaminododecane, and in this case, it is the lower generation dendrons which can avoid steric hindrance and form more effective gels. The stereochemistry of lysine is crucial in self-assembly, with opposite enantiomers disrupting each other's molecular recognition pathways. For the two-component system, stoichiometry is key, if too much diamine is present, dendron-stabilised microcrystals of the diamine begin to form. Interestingly, gelation still occurs in this case, and the systems with amides/alkyl chains are more effective gels, as a consequence of enhanced dendron-dendron intermolecular interactions allowing the microcrystals to form an interconnected network.

A ditopic ligand (1), containing two tridentate bis(acylhydrazone) subunits and bearing both long alkyl chains and hydrogen-bonding groups, has been synthesised. Metal cation binding in the presence of a base leads to hierarchical self-assembly, forming first a neutral [2 x 2] grid-type complex (2) that hierarchically assembles into metallosupramolecular polymer gels in toluene.

We report the synthesis of a family of gelators in which alkyl chains are connected to the amino groups of L-lysine methyl ester using a range of different hydrogen bonding linking groups (carbamate, amide, urea, thiourea and diacylhydrazine) using simple synthetic methodology based on isocyanate or acid chloride chemistry. The ability of these compounds to gelate organic solvents such as toluene or cyclohexane can be directly related to the ability of the linking group to form intermolecular hydrogen bonds. In general terms, the ability to structure solvents can be considered as: thiourea <carbamate <amide <urea similar to diacylhydrazine. This process has been confirmed by thermal measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and infrared and circular dichroism spectroscopies. By deprotecting the methyl ester group, we have demonstrated that a balance between hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups is essential-if the system has too much hydrophilicity (e. g., diacylhydrazine, urea) it will not form gels due to low solubility in the organic media. However, the less effective gelators based on amide and carbamate linkages are enhanced by converting the methyl ester to a carboxylic acid. Furthermore, subsequent mixing of the acid with a second component (diaminododecane) further enhances the ability to form networks, and, in the case of the amide, generates a two-component gel, which can immobilise a wide range of solvents of industrial interest including petrol and diesel (fuel oils), olive oil and sunflower oil (renewable food oils) and ethyl laurate, isopropyl myristate and isopropyl palmitate (oils used in pharmaceutical formulation). The gels are all thermoreversible, and may therefore be useful in controlled release/formulation applications.

During this research, we present a study on the thermal properties, such as the melting, cold crystallization, and glass transition temperatures as well as heat capacities from 293.15 K to 323.15 K of nine in-house synthesized protic ionic liquids based on the 3-(alkoxymethyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium salicylate ([H-Im-C1OCn][Sal]) with n = 3–11. The 3D structures, surface charge distributions and COSMO volumes of all investigated ions are obtained by combining DFT calculations and the COSMO-RS methodology. The heat capacity data sets as a function of temperature of the 3-(alkoxymethyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium salicylate are then predicted using the methodology originally proposed in the case of ionic liquids by Ge et al. 3-(Alkoxymethyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium salicylate based ionic liquids present specific heat capacities higher in many cases than other ionic liquids that make them suitable as heat storage media and in heat transfer processes. It was found experimentally that the heat capacity increases linearly with increasing alkyl chain length of the alkoxymethyl group of 3-(alkoxymethyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium salicylate as was expected and predicted using the Ge et al. method with an overall relative absolute deviation close to 3.2% for temperatures up to 323.15 K.

The reactions of enantiopure cyclohexene epoxides and trans-1,2-bromoacetates, derived from the corresponding substituted benzene cis-dihydrodiol metabolites, with nitrogen nucleophiles, were examined and possible mechanisms proposed. An initial objective was the synthesis of new 1,2-aminoalcohol enantiomers as potential chiral ligands and synthetic scaffolds for library generation. These apparently simple substitution reactions proved to be more complex than initially anticipated and were found to involve a combination of different reaction mechanisms. Allylic trans-1,2-azidohydrins were prepared by Lewis acid-catalysed ring-opening of cyclic vinyl epoxides with sodium azide via an S(N)2 mechanism. On heating, these trans-1,2-azidohydrins isomerized to the corresponding trans-1,4-azidohydrins via a suprafacial allyl azide [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement mechanism. Conversion of a 1,2-azidohydrin to a 1,2-azidoacetate moved the equilibrium position in favour of the 1,4-substitution product. Allylic trans-1,2-bromoacetates reacted with sodium azide at room temperature to give C-2 and C-4 substituted products. A clean inversion of configuration at C-2 was found, as expected, from a concerted S(N)2-pathway. However, substitution at C-4 was not stereoselective and resulted in mixtures of 1,4-cis and 1,4-trans products. This observation can be rationalized in terms of competitive S(N)2 and S(N)2 reactions allied to a [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement. cis-1,2-Azidohydrins and cis-1,2-azidoacetates were much more prone to rearrange than the corresponding trans-isomers. Reaction of the softer tosamide nucleophile with trans-1,2-bromoacetates resulted, predominantly, in C-4 substitution via a syn-S(N)2 mechanism. One application of the reaction of secondary amines with allylic cyclohexene epoxides, to give trans-1,2-aminoalcohols, is in the synthesis of the anticholinergic drug vesamicol, via an S(N)2 mechanism. Herein, the N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide and the N-propyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide room temperature ionic liquids, combined with the lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide salt, are investigated as electrolytes for Li/LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (Li/NMC) batteries. To conduct this study, volumetric properties, ionic conductivity and viscosity of the pure ionic liquids and selected electrolytes were firstly determined as a function of temperature and composition in solution. These data were then compared with those measured in the case of the standard alkyl carbonate-based electrolyte: e.g. the EC/PC/3DMC + 1 mol·L−1 LiPF6. The compatibility of the selected electrolytes with the lithium electrode was then investigated by following the evolution of Li/electrolyte interfaces through impedance measurements. Interestingly, the impedances of the investigated Li/electrolyte interfaces were found to be more than three times lower than that measured using the standard electrolyte. Finally, electrochemical performances of the ionic liquid-based electrolytes were investigated using galvanostatic charge and discharge and cyclic voltammetry of each Li/NMC cell. Using these electrolytes, each tested Li cell reaches up to 145 mA·h·g−1 at C/10 and 110 mA·h·g−1 at C with a coulombic efficiency close to 100 %.

A wide range of room temperature ionic liquids based on the 3-methylpiperdinium cation core were produced from 3-methylpiperidine, which is a derivative of DYTEK® A amine. First, reaction with 1-bromoalkanes or 1-bromoalkoxyalkanes generated the corresponding tertiary amines (Rmβpip, R = alkyl or alkoxyalkyl); further quaternisation reactions with the appropriate methylating agents yielded the quaternary [Rmmβpip]X salts (X(-) = I(-), [CF3CO2](-) or [OTf](-); Tf = -SO2CF3), and [Rmmβpip][NTf2] were prepared by anion metathesis from the corresponding iodides. All [NTf2](-) salts are liquids at room temperature. [Rmmβpip]X (X(-) = I(-), [CF3CO2](-) or [OTf](-)) are low-melting solids when R = alkyl, but room temperature liquids upon introduction of ether functionalities on R. Neither of the 3-methylpiperdinium ionic liquids showed any signs of crystallisation, even well below 0 °C. Some related non-C-substituted piperidinium and pyrrolidinium analogues were prepared and studied for comparison. Crystal structures of 1-hexyl-1,3-dimethylpiperidinium tetraphenylborate, 1-butyl-3-methylpiperidinium bromide, 1-(2-methoxyethyl)-1-methylpiperidinium chloride and 1-(2-methoxyethyl)-1-methylpyrrolidinium bromide are reported. Extensive structural and physical data are collected and compared to literature data, with special emphasis on the systematic study of the cation ring size and/or asymmetry effects on density, viscosity and ionic conductivity, allowing general trends to be outlined. Cyclic voltammetry shows that 3-methylpiperidinium ionic liquids, similarly to azepanium, piperidinium or pyrrolidinium counterparts, are extremely electrochemically stable; the portfolio of useful alternatives for safe and high-performing electrolytes is thus greatly extended.

The immobilization of a ruthenium complex (Ru2Cl4(az-tpy)2) within a range of supported ionic liquids ([C4C1im]Cl, [C4C1im][NTf2], [C6C1im]Cl, [C4C1pyrr]Br, [C4C1im]Br, [C4C1pyrr]Cl) dispersed silica (SILP) operates as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in oxidation of long chain linear primary amines to corresponding nitriles. This reaction follows a “green” route using a cheap and easy to handles oxidant (oxygen or air). The conversion was found to be strongly influenced by the alkyl chain length of the amine substrate and the choice of oxidant. No condensation reaction was observed between the starting amines and the selectivity to nitrile is 100%. Moving from a composition of 20 atm N2/5 atm O2 to 5 atm N2/20 atm O2 led to enhancements in the conversion (n-alkylamines) and selectivity (benzonitrile) which have been correlated with an increase of the solubilized oxygen. This was further supported by using different inert gas (nitrogen, helium, argon)/oxygen mixtures indicating that the O2 solubility in the SILP system, has an important effect on conversions and TON in this reaction using SILP catalysts. Experiments performed in the presence of CO2 led to a different behaviour due to the formation of amine-CO2 adducts. The application of the Weisz–Prater criterion confirmed the absence of any diffusional constraints.

A new homologous series of side-chain liquid crystal polymers, the poly[omega-(4-cyanoazobenzene-4'-oxy)alkyl methacrylate]s, have been prepared in which the length of the flexible alkyl spacer is varied from 3 to 12 methylene units. All the polymers exhibit liquid crystalline behaviour; specifically, crystal E, smectic A and nematic phases are observed. The glass transition temperatures decrease on increasing spacer length before reaching a limiting value at ca. 30 degrees C. The clearing temperatures exhibit an odd-even effect on varying the length and parity of the spacer. This is attributed to the change in the average shape of the side chain as the parity of the spacer is varied. This rationalization also accounts for the observed alternation in the entropy change associated with the clearing transition. A weak relaxation is observed theologically for several members of this polymer series at temperatures above their respective glass transition temperatures. This is attributed either to specific motions of the smectic layers or to 180 degrees reorientational jumps of the long axis of the mesogenic unit about the polymer backbone.
