Mass production of prestressed concrete beams is facilitated by the accelerated curing of the concrete. The ·method most commonly used for this purpose is steam curing at atmospheric pressure. This requires concrete temperatures as high as 150°F. during the curing period. Prestressing facilities in Iowa are located out of doors. This means that during the winter season the forms are set and the steel cables are stressed at temperatures as low as 0°F. The thermal expansion of the prestressing cables should result in a reduction of the stress which was placed in them at the lower temperature. If the stress is reduced in the cables, then the amount of prestress ultimately transferred to the concrete may be less than the amount for which the beam was designed. Research project HR-62 was undertaken to measure and explain the difference between the initial stress placed in the cables and the actual stress which is eventually transferred to the concrete. The project was assigned to the Materials Department Laboratory under the general supervision of the Testing Engineer, Mr. James W. Johnson. A small stress bed complete with steam curing facilities was set up in the laboratory, and prestressed concrete beams were fabricated under closely controlled conditions. Measurements were made to determine the initial stress in the steel and the final stress in the concrete. The results of these tests indicate that there is a general loss of prestressing force in excess of that caused by elastic shortening of the concrete. The exact amount of the loss and the identification of the factors involved could not be determined from this limited investigation.

Earthen fills and back slopes resulting from highway building and other construction projects pose problems with respect to erosion stabilization and establishing vegetation cover. Sediments from such slopes create stream pollution while the erosion itself results in maintenance problems. Furthermore, adverse conditions aggravated by erosion prevent satisfactory establishing of vegetative cover. A dense vegetative cover is very effective in controlling erosion but even with optimum weather and soil conditions there is a delay of about 10 weeks between seeding and the establishment of a vegetative cover. Under actual field conditions, 3 months to a year may elapse between completion of construction and establishment of a vegetative cover. A research project was initiated early in 1974 to determine the effectiveness of a rock mulch of crushed limestone aggregates in controlling soil losses on highway construction back slopes in Iowa and to find the influence of such treatments on stand establishment of grasses and legumes.

It is difficult to maintain reflectorized lane markings on high-traffic, multi-lane highways. This is particularly true of sections in urban areas where there are frequent lane changes, such as on the Des Moines Freeway, I-235. In spite of the fact that the lane markings are painted on an average of three times a year, they are frequently absent during a considerable portion of the winter period. In the summer of 1973, the office of Highway Maintenance suggested a research project using a new thermoplastic paint developed by the Prismo Universal Corporation. Because of difficulties in scheduling the work, a definite proposal was not submitted until 1974. Upon the recommendation of the Iowa Highway Research Board, the project was approved by the Iowa State Highway Commission on August 7, 1974.

Iowa has been using low slump concrete for repair and surfacing of deteriorated bridge decks on a routine basis since the mid 1960'2. More than 150 bridges have been resurfaced by this method with good results. A study was initiated in 1973 to evaluate 15 bridges resurfaced with low slump concrete, and one bridge resurfaced with latex modified concrete. The evaluation includes an assessment of concrete physical properties, chloride penetration rates, concrete consolidation, and riding qualities of the finished bridge deck. Results indicate that the overall properties of these two types of concrete are quite similar and have resulted in a contractor option concerning which system shall be used on bridge deck repair/resurfacing projects.

Many times during the past four years we have seen ranges in the durability factor for a single coarse aggregate source that were too great to be explained by variations in the coarse aggregate alone. The durability test (ASTM C 666 Method B) as presently used is a test of the concrete system rather than that of a particular coarse aggregate. An informal study of current durability factor data indicates that w/c ratio and/or percentage of air may be critical to beam growth and durability factor. The purpose of this project, R-258, is to determine the extent w/c ratio and air content variations have on beam growth and durability factor when other factors including coarse aggregate gradation are held constant.

The AASHO specifications for highway bridges require that in designing a bridge, the live load must be multiplied by an impact factor for which a formula is given, dependent only upon the length of the bridge. This formula is a result of August Wohler's tests on fatigue in metals, in which he determined that metals which are subjected to large alternating loads will ultimately fail at lower stresses than those which are subjected only to continuous static loads. It is felt by some investigators that this present impact factor is not realistic, and it is suggested that a consideration of the increased stress due to vibrations caused by vehicles traversing the span would result in a more realistic impact factor than now exists. Since the current highway program requires a large number of bridges to be built, the need for data on dynamic behavior of bridges is apparent. Much excellent material has already been gathered on the subject, but many questions remain unanswered. This work is designed to investigate further a specific corner of that subject, and it is hoped that some useful light may be shed on the subject. Specifically this study hopes to correlate, by experiment on a small scale test bridge, the upper limits of impact utilizing a stationary, oscillating load to represent axle loads moving past a given point. The experiments were performed on a small scale bridge which is located in the basement of the Iowa Engineering Experiment Station. The bridge is a 25 foot simply supported span, 10 feet wide, supported by four beams with a composite concrete slab. It is assumed that the magnitude of the predominant forcing function is the same as the magnitude of the dynamic force produced by a smoothly rolling load, which has a frequency determined by the passage of axles. The frequency of passage of axles is defined as the speed of the vehicle divided by the axle spacing. Factors affecting the response of the bridge to this forcing function are the bridge stiffness and mass, which determine the natural frequency, and the effects of solid damping due to internal structural energy dissipation.

This report describes the work accomplished to date on research project HR-173, A Computer Based Information System for County Equipment Cost Records, and presents the initial design for this system. The specific topics discussed here are findings from the analysis of information needs, the system specifications developed from these findings, and the proposed system design based upon the system specifications. The initial system design will include tentative input designs for capturing input data, output designs to show the output formats and the items to be output for use in decision making, file design showing the organization of information to be kept on each piece of equipment in the computer data file, and general system design explaining how the entire system will operate. The Steering Committee appointed by Iowa Highway Research Board is asked to study this report, make appropriate suggestions, and give approval to the proposed design subject to any suggestions made. This approval will permit the designer to proceed promptly with the development of the computer program implementation phase of the design.

Many accidents involving Iowa snowplows have happened in recent years. This study investigated the influence of time of day, sex of subject, type of snowplow sign and snowplow speed on the criteria of oncoming driver reaction time and his estimate of snowplow speed. Film strips were made of a car passing a snow-Plow under various experimental conditions. These experimental movie strips were viewed in the laboratory by college student drivers who were asked to indicate their reaction time to slow down and to estimate the speed of the snowplow being passed. The generally best sign condition for the snowplow was to have a striped rear sign and a speed-proportional flashing light in addition to the standard rotating beacon on top of the truck. Several recommendations were made.

As a result of the construction of the Saylorville Dam and Reservoir on the Des Moines River, six highway bridges crossing the river were scheduled for removal. One of these, an old pin-connected, high-truss, single-lane bridge, was selected for a comprehensive testing program which included ultimate load tests, service load tests, and a supplementary test program. A second bridge was used for a limited service load test program. The results of the research are detailed in two interim reports. The first interim report outlines the ultimate load tests and the second interim report details the results of the service load and supplementary test program. This report presents a summary of these findings along with recommendations for implementation of the findings.
