To understand the morphological and histological aspects of internal systems of ticks has become important matter since these arthropods have an impact in the areas of the economy and public health. In this context, this study has provided morphological data on female germinative cells of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks, ectoparasites of dogs that maintain a close relationship with human on a daily basis. Oocytes of engorged females were analyzed, through the PAS reaction (detection of polysaccharides) counterstained by methyl green (detection of RNA) revealing information that allowed to infer for the first time the presence of Cajal bodies, in the germinal vesicles (nuclei) of developing oocytes, as well as showing how the RNA and the polysaccharides are involved in the dynamics of the vitellogenesis in this species. Neste artigo, apresentamos os resultados de uma pesquisa sobre as contribuições e as dificuldades da abordagem de questões sociocientíficas na prática de professores de ciências em serviço. Na pesquisa realizada, de caráter qualitativo com corte crítico, a realidade é entendida como uma construção social subjetiva e intersubjetiva, marcada por um contexto histórico. A constituição dos dados foi feita no decorrer de uma disciplina sobre ensino de ciências a partir de questões sociocientíficas, desenvolvida em um curso de mestrado em ensino de química, e teve a participação de 31 professores de ciências em serviço. No intuito de garantir a validade de fidedignidade da pesquisa, foi utilizada mais de uma fonte de dados. Assim, os dados foram constituídos por meio de vários instrumentos, tais como: questionário inicial de caracterização dos participantes da pesquisa, gravações de entrevistas focais e trabalhos apresentados pelos professores sobre a abordagem de questões sociocientíficas (QSCs) em sala de aula. As análises alcançadas indicam que a abordagem de questões sociocientíficas possui um potencial considerável para a prática do professor em termos da tomada de decisão e do desenvolvimento de pensamento crítico dos alunos. O trabalho com questões sociocientíficas também exige planejamento do ensino e ações bem sustentadas, assim como a participação ativa do professor. Finalmente, são caracterizadas as dificuldades do trabalho realizado em termos pedagógicos, formativos e curriculares.

In the past 20 years, decentralization has been proposed as a strategy for enhancing public participation. Aid-providing organizations, such as the World Bank, stimulated decentralization processes in several countries in the hope that this would promote civic empowerment, diminish corruption, enhance efficiency, and improve public service delivery. This assumption forms the basis for a comparative analysis into the relation between decentralization and participation at the local level in Brazil, Japan, Russia and Sweden. A multi-level regression analysis using the data of the Democracy and Local Governance Project was undertaken in order to test the 'one size fits all' and the 'diversity in development' hypotheses. The results show that the second hypothesis was corroborated. Perceived autonomy had a different impact on openness to participation depending on the country considered; in one country (Japan), perceived autonomy diminished public officials' willingness to be open to public participation.

The involvement of opioid receptors in the analgesic response was evaluated by the tail-immersion test in simultaneously adrenalectomized and ovariectomized female Wistar rats (210-250 g). The reaction time (mean +/- SEM) for tail withdrawal from hot water decreased significantly 2 weeks after surgery (3.52 +/- 0.20 s) when compared to intact animals (6.09 +/- 0.23 s). Hormonal replacement with dexamethasone (50-mu-g/day) did not affect reaction time (3.38 +/- 0.19 s). However, this response was restored by combined adrenal and gonadal steroid substitution (estradiol 5-mu-g/day and progesterone 1.5-mu-g 6 h before the tests) therapy (5.11 +/- 0.45 s in animals treated with dexamethasone plus estradiol and 5.04 +/- 0.43 s in animals treated with dexamethasone plus estradiol plus progesterone). Naloxone (2 mg/kg) decreased the reaction time of animals treated with adrenal and gonadal steroids (5.11 +/- 0.45 vs 4.15 +/- 0.44 s and 5.04 +/- 0.43 vs 3.87 +/- 0.28 s, respectively, before and after naloxone) but failed to decrease it in rats treated with dexamethasone only (3.88 +/- 0.18 vs 4.34 +/- 0.25 s, before and after naloxone). These observations indicate that gonadal steroids are the most important steroid factors involved in the reaction time to tail immersion in hot water and confirm other reports that the opioid pathways modulating the neuronal circuitry require the presence of these hormones.

1. We investigated the possible potentiating effect of chloramphenicol succinate (30 mg/kg, every 12 h for 4 days, ip) on the response of polymorphonuclear neutrophils to carrageenin (150 mug, ip) or dextran (100 mug, ip) in the peritoneal cavity of male Wistar rats (180-230 g; N = 12 in each group).2. Chloramphenicol potentiated the cell migration induced by carrageenin (35%) but not that induced by dextran. Previous macrophage depletion in the peritoneal cavity by washing with sterile saline abolished the cell response, whereas a previous thioglycollate-induced increase in macrophage numbers enhanced the potentiating effect (60%).3. These results suggest that the potentiating effect on polymorphonuclear neutrophil migration induced by chloramphenicol may be related to chemotactic factors released by macrophages.
