Since they present a negative Poisson's radio, auxetic materials are different from conventional ones. These materials present an unusual behaviour: when stretched (elongated in the longitudinal direction), their cross-section is increased. There are two different ways to obtain auxetic materials: through polymers or through structures. It is possible to affirm that those obtained through fibrous structures are very recent and that few authors have been dedicated to their study. This study compares the physicochemical characteristics of six species from Brazilian Malvaceae family with natural fibers of recognized applicability in the industry. The objective of the present study is present the physicochemical characterization of six Brazilian vegetal fibers: Sida rhombifolia L.; Sida carpinifolia L. f.; Sidastrum paniculatum (L.) Fryxell; Sida cordifolia L.; Malvastrum coromandelianum (L.) Gurck; Wissadula subpeltata (Kuntze) R.E.Fries. Respectively the two first species are from Brazilian Atlantic Forest biome and the four remaining from Brazilian Cerrado biome, despite of present in other regions of the plane

This work intends to evaluate the mechanical properties of eco-composites reinforced with natural fiber fabrics in different fibrous arrangements, with a thermoset matrix of natural origin. When integrated by hand lay-up process, the composites obtained present excellent mechanical characteristics combined with environment friendly features, being able to be used in various industrial sectors.

Natural Fiber Composites based on polypropylene have gained increasing interest over the past two decades, both in the scientific and industry communities. In this study, the mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP)/natural fiber composites were studied and compared with those of polypropylene reinforced by glass fiber. Flax and jute woven fabrics have been used. PP/glass fiber composites showed better performance in terms of tensile properties.

Current societal challenges increasingly demand the need to seek for efficient and sustainable solutions to daily problems. Construction, as a result of its activity, is one of the main responsible industry for the exploitation of resources and greenhouse gas emissions. In this way, several research works are being undertaken to change some of the current practices. This paper presents the work being done at University of Minho to study de degradation of natural fibers when used as a sustainable solution for soil reinforcement. Jute and sisal fibrous structures (0º/90º) were studied in terms of their degradation over time, when incorporated into soil and when subject to accelerated aging tests in a QUV weathering test equipment. Results show that the process of biodegradation of natural fibers is clearly accelerated by the action of temperature, moisture and solar radiation, explaining further degradation of jute and sisal fibers when exposed to these factors, although more pronounced in jute fabric structures.

The reinforcement of soil is defined as an effective and reliable technique to improve strength and stability. For this propose, the use of natural fibers has been commonly. Over the past years, a series of studies have been performed in order to investigate the influence of randomly oriented fibers, especially for compressible clayey soils. However, less attention has been given to the reinforcing of sandy materials, as well as the use of oriented fibers meshes in order to improve mechanical behaviour. The main aim of this study is to identify the influence that different percentages of fibers, as well as the use of meshes of oriented fibers, has on soil mechanical behaviour. For this purpose, unconfined compression tests with local strain measurements were performed on a silty sand reinforced with Sisal fibers and a comparative study between randomly oriented and 0° and 90° fibers is presented.

O caráter pluricultural das sociedades contemporâneas tem estado na base de reflexões de vária ordem sobre as relações entre cultura e Direito, entre diversidade cultural e prática jurídica, seja esta legislativa ou judicial. Neste âmbito aparentemente uniforme podem incluir-se os debates mais díspares, nos quais se cruzam, além disso, diferentes áreas do saber, diferentes tradições teóricas ou doutrinais no interior de cada uma e, por fim, diferentes níveis de análise. Centrando-me especificamente nos debates que envolvem a relação entre diferenças culturais e Direito penal ou o sistema de justiça criminal, proponho um esboço de roteiro capaz de identificar as principais dificuldades e mal-entendidos correntes no cruzamento de pontos de vista, bem como um método de discussão que contribua para preveni-los. Para tal, importa primeiro reconhecer a especificidade dos diferentes planos de discussão possíveis para perceber como e até que ponto são conjugáveis fins societais, regras de punição, programas políticos de gestão da diversidade cultural e direitos individuais

A história da maconha no Brasil tem seu início com a própria descoberta do país. A maconha é uma planta exótica, ou seja, não é natural do Brasil. Foi trazida para cá pelos escravos negros, daí a sua denominação de fumo-de-Angola. O seu uso disseminou-se rapidamente entre os negros escravos e nossos índios, que passaram a cultivá-la. Séculos mais tarde, com a popularização da planta entre intelectuais franceses e médicos ingleses do exército imperial na Índia, ela passou a ser considerada em nosso meio um excelente medicamento indicado para muitos males. A demonização da maconha no Brasil iniciou-se na década de 1920 e, na II Conferência Internacional do Ópio, em 1924, em Genebra, o delegado brasileiro Dr. Pernambuco afirmou para as delegações de 45 outros países: "a maconha é mais perigosa que o ópio". Apesar das tentativas anteriores, no século XIX e princípios do século XX, a perseguição policial aos usuários de maconha somente se fez constante e enérgica a partir da década de 1930, possivelmente como resultante da decisão da II Conferência Internacional do Ópio. O primeiro levantamento domiciliar brasileiro sobre consumo de psicotrópicos, realizado em 2001, mostrou que 6,7% da população consultada já havia experimentado maconha pelo menos uma vez na vida (lifetime use), o que significa dizer que alguns milhões de brasileiros poderiam ser acusados e condenados à prisão por tal ofensa à presente lei. No presente, um projeto de lei foi aprovado no Congresso Nacional propondo a transformação da pena de reclusão por uso/posse de drogas (inclusive maconha) em medidas administrativas.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have shown to be promising sustainable media for a wide range of applications. Nonetheless, very limited data is available on the properties of these solvents. A more comprehensive body of data on NADES is required for a deeper understanding of these solvents at molecular level, which will undoubtedly foster the development of new applications. NADES based on choline chloride, organic acids, amino acids and sugars were prepared, and their density, thermal behavior, conductivity and polarity were assessed, for different NADES compositions. The NADES studied can be stable up to 170 °C, depending on their composition. The thermal characterization revealed that all the NADES are glass formers and some, after water removal, exhibit crystallinity. The morphological characterization of the crystallizable materials was performed using polarized optical microscopy which also provided evidence of homogeneity/phase separation. The conductivity of the NADES was also assessed from 0 to 40 °C. The more polar, organic acid-based NADES presented the highest conductivities. The conductivity dependence on temperature was well described by the Vogelâ Fulcherâ Tammann equation for some of the NADES studied.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the citotoxic activity of two commonly used anti-depressants: paroxetine and bupropion. We also evaluated the in vitro natural killer activity (NKA) after incubating the blood samples with the antidepressants. METHODS: Peripheral blood samples from 15 healthy volunteers were collected and the mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated and incubated for 24h with (or without = control cells) paroxetine and bupropion, in concentrations of 30, 100 and 1000 ng/ml. After the incubation period in both groups, the amount of dead cells was calculated using trypam blue technique. NKA was evaluated using the classic51Cr release assay. CONCLUSIONS: PBMCs dead cells occurred in both groups and in proportion to all pharmacological concentrations. Nevertheless, the NKA was not affected, even with the reduction in the number of effective cells.

The health industry has always used natural products as a rich, promising, and alternative source of drugs that are used in the health system. Propolis, a natural resinous product known for centuries, is a complex product obtained by honey bees from substances collected from parts of different plants, buds, and exudates in different geographic areas. Propolis has been attracting scientific attention since it has many biological and pharmacological properties, which are related to its chemical composition. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have been performed to characterize and understand the diverse bioactivities of propolis and its isolated compounds, as well as to evaluate and validate its potential. Yet, there is a lack of information concerning clinical effectiveness. The goal of this review is to discuss the potential of propolis for the development of new drugs by presenting published data concerning the chemical composition and the biological properties of this natural compound from different geographic origins.

When combined at particular molar fractions, sugars, aminoacids or organic acids a present a high melting point depression, becoming liquids at room temperature. These are called Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents – NADES and are envisaged to play a major role on the chemical engineering processes of the future. Nonetheless, there is a significant lack of knowledge of its fundamental and basic properties, which is hindering their industrial applications. For this reason it is important to extend the knowledge on these systems, boosting their application development [1]. In this work, we have developed and characterized NADES based on choline chloride, organic acids, amino acids and sugars. Their density, thermal behavior, conductivity and polarity were assessed for different compositions. The conductivity was measured from 0 to 40 °C and the temperature effect was well described by the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation. The morphological characterization of the crystallizable materials was done by polarized optical microscopy that provided also evidence of homogeneity/phase separation. Additionally, the rheological and thermodynamic properties of the NADES and the effect of water content were also studied. The results show these systems have Newtonian behavior and present significant viscosity decrease with temperature and water content, due to increase on the molecular mobility. The anhydrous systems present viscosities that range from higher than 1000Pa.s at 20°C to less than 1Pa.s at 70°C. DSC characterization confirms that for water content as high as 1:1:1 molar ratio, the mixture retains its single phase behavior. The results obtained demonstrate that the NADES properties can be finely tunned by careful selection of its constituents. NADES present the necessary properties for use as extraction solvents. They can be prepared from inexpensive raw materials and tailored for the selective extraction of target molecules. The data produced in this work is hereafter importance for the selection of the most promising candidates avoiding a time consuming and expensive trial and error phase providing also data for the development of models able to predict their properties and the mechanisms that allow the formation of the deep eutectic mixtures.

OBJETIVO: Testar a hipótese de associação entre hipertrofia miocárdica e níveis aumentados de insulina no soro de filhos de mães diabéticas, além de determinar a freqüência de regressão espontânea e o momento de sua ocorrência. MÉTODOS: Foram estudados 72 pacientes (54 filhos de mães diabéticas e 18 controles). O diagnóstico de hipertrofia miocárdica foi realizado por ecocardiografia pré-natal, uni e bidimensional. Os registros da insulina amniótica foram obtidos de um estudo pré-natal prévio sobre hipertrofia miocárdica, pois a participação das gestantes era comum aos dois projetos. RESULTADOS: Houve 10 (18,52%) casos de hipertrofia miocárdica entre os filhos de mães diabéticas. As medidas do septo foram significantemente diferentes entre os grupos (filhos de mães diabéticas e controles) na avaliação com 1 mês (p=0,04). A insulina manteve-se elevada nos filhos de diabéticas até 3 meses de idade, período em que era significativamente diferente em relação aos controles (p=0,003 e p=0,001, com 1 mês e 3 meses, respectivamente). A associação entre a regressão do septo interventricular e a regressão dos níveis de insulina ocorreu até 1 mês de idade. CONCLUSÃO: Houve regressão espontânea das medidas do septo interventricular até 6 meses de idade e a associação entre hiperinsulinismo e hipertrofia miocárdica esteve presente até 1 mês de idade.
