This study relates the organic sedimentation characteristics to the lithostratigraphic successionsthat were observed at Site 767 (Celebes Sea) and Site 768 (Sulu Sea) during ODP Leg 124. It is based on the total organic carbon content (TOC) of the sediments, on the petrographictype and maturity of the organic matter, and on the TOC accumulation rates calculated for the lithostratigraphic units. In the Celebes and Sulu Seas sediments, the organic matter is mainly of terrestrial origin with the highest concentrations and TOC accumulation rates occurring in the middle Miocene turbiditic sequences that correspond to a major compressive event between the Philippine Mobile Belt and the Palawan, Cagayan, and Sulu Ridges. Petrographic analysis of the Eocene and lower Miocene organic matter in the Celebes Sea shows that it consists only of highly degraded terrestrial particles. This observation and the very low TOC accumulation rates indicate poor conditions for organic carbon preservation during this open-ocean phase of the Celebes Basin formation. The organic matter, either of marine or terrestrial origin, is much better preserved in the younger sediments, suggesting physico-chemical changes in the depositional environment. Because of the dilution phenomena by turbidites, it is difficult to observe the progressive improvement of the organic matter preservation throughout the turbiditic series. The same change in preservation is broadly observed in the Sulu Sea from the early Miocene (rapid opening phase of the basin with massive pyroclastic deposits) to the present.

The barium distribution in sediments and pore fluids from five sites drilled in the Japan Sea have been used to illustrate the geochemical behavior of this element as it pertains paleoproductivity reconstructions, diagenetic remobilization, and barite precipitation in authigenic fronts. Sites where sulfate is depleted in the pore fluids also show high concentrations of dissolved barium, reflecting dissolution of biogenic barite. The high rate of sedimentation at Sites 798 and 799 results in a rapid sulfate depletion, which in turn leads to barite dissolution and reprecipitation in diagenetic fronts. The dissolved barium distribution at these sites has been used to quantify the rate of barite dissolution; we estimate a first-order rate constant for barite dissolution to be 2*10**-6/s at Site 799 and 2*10**-7/s at Site 798. Authigenic barite has been documented in sediments from Site 799 at 323 meters below seafloor by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray fluorescence analysis. These results indicate barite precipitation in a diagenetic front near the zone of sulfate depletion by upward migration of dissolved barium and downward diffusion of sulfate. Barite precipitation has also been inferred at Sites 796 and 798 based on sedimentary and dissolved barium distributions. Sulfate is not depleted in the pore fluids of Site 794. The lack of diagenetic remobilization of biogenic barium at this site preserves the high barium signal associated with the high-productivity sequences deposited during the late Miocene to Pliocene. Significantly, the organic carbon distribution does not indicate high accumulation rates during the periods of high opal and barium deposition. Instead, higher organic carbon accumulations are recorded in the Quaternary and middle Miocene sequences; intervals that are also characterized by deposition of siliciclastic turbidites. The presence of a terrestrial component in the organic carbon record renders barium a more useful indicator than organic carbon for paleoproductivity reconstructions in this marginal sea.

Firm stratigraphic correlations are needed to evaluate the global significance of unconformity bounded units (sequences). We correlate the well-developed uppermost Campanian and Maestrichtian sequences of the New Jersey Coastal Plain to the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS) by integrating Sr-isotopic stratigraphy and biostratigraphy. To do this, we developed a Maestrichtian (ca. 73-65 Ma) Sr-isotopic reference section at Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 525A in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean. Maestrichtian strata can then be dated by measuring their 87Sr/86Sr composition, calibrating to the GPTS of S. C. Cande and D. V. Kent (1993, personal commun.), and using the equation Age (Ma) = 37326.894-52639.89 (87Sr/86Sr). Sr-stratigraphic resolution for the Maestrichtian is estimated as +-1.2 to +-2 m.y. At least two unconformity-bounded units comprise the uppermost Campanian to Maestrichtian strata in New Jersey. The lower one, the Marshalltown sequence, is assigned to calcareous nannofossil Zones CC20/21 (~NC19) and CC22b (~NC20). It ranges in age from ~74.1 to 69.9 Ma based on Sr-isotope age estimates. The overlying Navesink sequence is assigned to calcareous nannoplankton Zones CC25-26 (~NC21-23); it ranges in age from 69.3 to 65 Ma based on Sr-isotope age estimates. The upper part of this sequence, the Tinton Formation, has no calcareous planktonic control; Sr-isotopes provide an age estimate of 66 +- 1.2 Ma (latest Maestrichtian). Sequence boundaries at the base and the top of the Marshalltown sequence match boundaries elsewhere in the Atlantic Coastal Plain (Owens and Gohn, 1985) and the inferred global sea-level record of Haq et al. (1987); they support eustatic changes as the mechanism controlling depositional history of this sequence. However, the latest Maestrichtian record in New Jersey does not agree with Haq et al. (1987); we attribute this to correlation and time-scale differences near the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. High sedimentation rates in the latest Maestrichtian of New Jersey (Shrewsbury Member of the Red Bank Formation and the Tinton Formation) suggest tectonic uplift and/or rapid progradation during deposition of the highstand systems tract.

Lichens, symbiotic associations of fungi (mycobionts) and green algae or cyanobacteria (photobionts), are poikilohydric organisms that are particularly well adapted to withstand adverse environmental conditions. Terrestrial ecosystems of the Antarctic are therefore largely dominated by lichens. The effects of global climate change are especially pronounced in the maritime Antarctic and it may be assumed that the lichen vegetation will profoundly change in the future. The genetic diversity of populations is closely correlated to their ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions and to their future evolutionary potential. In this study, we present evidence for low genetic diversity in Antarctic mycobiont and photobiont populations of the widespread lichen Cetraria aculeata. We compared between 110 and 219 DNA sequences from each of three gene loci for each symbiont. A total of 222 individuals from three Antarctic and nine antiboreal, temperate and Arctic populations were investigated. The mycobiont diversity is highest in Arctic populations, while the photobionts are most diverse in temperate regions. Photobiont diversity decreases significantly towards the Antarctic but less markedly towards the Arctic, indicating that ecological factors play a minor role in determining the diversity of Antarctic photobiont populations. Richness estimators calculated for the four geographical regions suggest that the low genetic diversity of Antarctic populations is not a sampling artefact. Cetraria aculeata appears to have diversified in the Arctic and subsequently expanded its range into the Southern Hemisphere. The reduced genetic diversity in the Antarctic is most likely due to founder effects during long-distance colonization.

Geochemical analyses of the middle Eocene through lower Oligocene lithologic Unit IIIC (260-518 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) indicate a relatively constant geochemical composition of the detrital fraction throughout this depositional interval at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 647 in the southern Labrador Sea. The main variability occurs in redox-sensitive elements (e.g., iron, manganese, and phosphorus), which may be related to early diagenetic mobility in anaerobic pore waters during bacterial decomposition of organic matter. Initial preservation of organic matter was mediated by high sedimentation rates (36 m/m.y.). High iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) contents are associated with carbonate concretions of siderite, manganosiderite, and rhodochrosite. These concretions probably formed in response to elevated pore-water alkalinity and total dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations resulting from bacterial sulfate reduction, as indicated by nodule stable-isotope compositions and pore-water geochemistry. These nodules differ from those found in upper Cenozoic hemipelagic sequences in that they are not associated with methanogenesis. Phosphate minerals (carbonate-fluorapatite) precipitated in some intervals, probably as the result of desorption of phosphorus from iron and manganese during reduction. The bulk chemical composition of the sediments differs little from that of North Atlantic Quaternary abyssal red clays, but may contain a minor hydrothermal component. The silicon/ aluminum (Si/Al) ratio, however, is high and variable and probably reflects original variations in biogenic opal, much of which is now altered to smectite and/or opal CT. An increase in the sodium/potassium (Na/K) ratio in the upper Eocene corresponds to the beginning of coarsergrained feldspar flux to the site, possibly marking the onset of more vigorous deep currents. Although the Site 647 cores provide a nearly complete high-resolution, high-latitude Eocene-Oligocene record, the high sedimentation rate and somewhat unusual diagenetic conditions have led to variable alteration of benthic foraminifers and fine-fraction carbonate and have overprinted the original stable-isotope records. Planktonic foraminifers are less altered, but on the whole, there is little chance of sorting out the nature and timing of environmental change on the basis of our stable-isotope analyses.

During the extension of Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Leg 76 a new and previously unpenetrated lithological unit composed mainly of claystones was cored above basalt basement at Site 534 in the Blake-Bahama Basin. The Callovian part of the new unit contains interbedded 'black shales' which were hitherto unexpected in this part of the section. This Paper presents a brief palynological examination of lithofacies-kerogen relationships in these sediments and shows that their organic content is almost entirely a function of the re-deposition of terrestial and marine organic matter versus the ambient redox conditions of the depositional environment. Allochthonous organic matter inputs are highest in the interbedded turbidites and decline progressively toward the pelagic black shales in which marine organic matter is comparatively well preserved. The significance of various kerogen and palynomorph indices are discussed. The study emphasizes the absolute necessity for sedimentologically-aware sampling in all palynological and geochemical work on lithologically heterogeneous sequences.

Background: Octopods have successfully colonised the world's oceans from the tropics to the poles. Yet, successful persistence in these habitats has required adaptations of their advanced physiological apparatus to compensate impaired oxygen supply. Their oxygen transporter haemocyanin plays a major role in cold tolerance and accordingly has undergone functional modifications to sustain oxygen release at sub-zero temperatures. However, it remains unknown how molecular properties evolved to explain the observed functional adaptations. We thus aimed to assess whether natural selection affected molecular and structural properties of haemocyanin that explains temperature adaptation in octopods. Results: Analysis of 239 partial sequences of the haemocyanin functional units (FU) f and g of 28 octopod species of polar, temperate, subtropical and tropical origin revealed natural selection was acting primarily on charge properties of surface residues. Polar octopods contained haemocyanins with higher net surface charge due to decreased glutamic acid content and higher numbers of basic amino acids. Within the analysed partial sequences, positive selection was present at site 2545, positioned between the active copper binding centre and the FU g surface. At this site, methionine was the dominant amino acid in polar octopods and leucine was dominant in tropical octopods. Sites directly involved in oxygen binding or quaternary interactions were highly conserved within the analysed sequence. Conclusions: This study has provided the first insight into molecular and structural mechanisms that have enabled octopods to sustain oxygen supply from polar to tropical conditions. Our findings imply modulation of oxygen binding via charge-charge interaction at the protein surface, which stabilize quaternary interactions among functional units to reduce detrimental effects of high pH on venous oxygen release. Of the observed partial haemocyanin sequence, residue 2545 formed a close link between the FU g surface and the active centre, suggesting a role as allosteric binding site. The prevalence of methionine at this site in polar octopods, implies regulation of oxygen affinity via increased sensitivity to allosteric metal binding. High sequence conservation of sites directly involved in oxygen binding indicates that functional modifications of octopod haemocyanin rather occur via more subtle mechanisms, as observed in this study.

Analyses of 40 carbonate core samples - 27 from Site 535, 12 from Site 540, and 1 from Site 538A - have confirmed many of the findings of the Shipboard Scientific Party. The samples, all but one Early to mid-Cretaceous in age (Berriasian to Cenomanian), reflect sequences of cyclically anoxic and oxic depositional environments. They are moderately to very dark colored, dominantly planar-parallel, laminated lime mudstones. Most show the effects of intense mechanical compaction. Visual kerogen characteristics and conventional Rock-Eval parameters indicate that these deep basinal carbonates contain varying mixtures of thermally immature kerogen derived from both marine and terrigenous precursors. However, variations in kerogen chemistry are evident upon analysis of the pyrolysis mass spectral data in conjunction with the other geochemical analyses. Particularly diagnostic is the reduction index, Rl, a measure of H2S produced during pyrolysis. Total organic carbon, TOC, ranges from 0.6 to 6.6%, with an overall average of 2.4%. Average TOCs for these fine-grained mudstones are: late Eocene 2.5% (1 sample), Cenomanian 2.2% (6), Albian 2.0% (10), Aptian 1.3% (1), Barremian-Hauterivian 2.8% (11), late Valanginian 4.8% (3), Berriasian-early Valanginian 1.6% (7). Most of the carbonates have source-potential ratings of fair to very good of predominantly oil-prone to mixed kerogen, with only a few gas-prone samples. The ratings correlate well with the inferred depositional environments, i.e., whether oxic or anoxic. Several new organic-geochemical parameters, especially Rl, based on pyrolysis mass spectrometry of powdered whole-rock samples, support this view. Tar from fractures in laminated to bioturbated limestones of Unit IV (late Valanginian) at 535-58-4, 19-20 cm (530 m sub-bottom) appears to be mature, biodegraded, and of migrated rather than on site indigenous origin.

Cores from the upper 70 meters below seafloor (mbsf) (upper Pleistocene) at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 645 in Baffin Bay show dramatic meter-scale changes in color and mineralogy. Below this interval, mineralogical changes are more gradual to the top of the Miocene at about 550 mbsf. The Pliocene-Pleistocene section can be divided into five facies: Facies 1 - massive, poorly sorted, gravel-bearing muds; Facies 2 - gray silty clays and silty muds; Facies 3 - laminated detricarbonate silty muds; Facies 4 - silty sand and sandy silt; and Facies 5 - poorly sorted muddy sands and silty muds. Facies 4 and 5 are restricted to the Pliocene section below depths of about 275 mbsf. The mineralogical/color cycles in the upper 70 mbsf are the result of alternations between Facies 2 and three lithotypes of Facies 1: lithotype A - tan-colored, carbonate-rich, gravel-bearing mud; lithotype B - weak, red-colored, gravel-bearing mud rich in sedimentary rock fragments; and lithotype C - gray, gravel-bearing mud. A fourth lithotype, D, is restricted to depths of 168-275 mbsf and is dark gray, carbonate-poor, gravel-bearing mud. We believe that all lithotypes of Facies 1 and the sand and gravel fractions of Facies 2 and 3 were deposited by ice rafting. Depositional processes for Facies 4 and 5 probably include ice rafting and bottom- and turbidity-current transport. Data from petrographic analyses of light and heavy sand-sized grains and X-ray analyses of silt- and clay-size fractions suggest that tan-colored sediments (lithotype A of Facies 1; Facies 3) were derived mainly from Paleozoic carbonates of Ellesmere, Devon, and northern Baffin islands. Weak red sediments (lithotype B) contain significant red sedimentary clasts, reworked quartzarenite grains and clasts, and rounded colorless garnets, all derived from Proterozoic sequences of the Borden and Thule basins, and from minor Mesozoic red beds. Other sediments in the upper 335 mbsf at Site 645 contain detritus from a heterogeneous mixture of sources, including Precambrian shield terranes around Baffin Bay. Sediments from 335 to 550 mbsf (Facies 5) are rich in friable sedimentary clasts and detrital micas and contain glauconite and, in a few samples, reworked diatoms. These components suggest derivation from poorly consolidated Mesozoic-Tertiary sediments in coastal outcrops and beneath the modern shelves of northeastern Baffin Island and western Greenland. For the upper Pleistocene section (about 0-100 mbsf), marked mineralogical cyclicity is attributed to fluctuating glacial margins, calving rates, and iceberg melting rates, particularly around the northern end of Baffin Bay. Tan-colored, carbonate-rich units were derived at times of maximum advance of glaciers on Ellesmere and Devon islands, during relatively warm intervals induced by incursion of warm Atlantic surface water into the bay. At the beginning of these warmer episodes, most icebergs were contributed by glaciers near sea level around the Arctic channels, which resulted in deposition of weak red, ice-rafted units rich in Proterozoic sedimentary clasts.

Major element geochemical composition was established for 59 tephra horizons from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1150 and 1151, located in the Japan forearc. These data, encompassing typically between 15 and 30 individual shard analyses per tephra horizon, were used to investigate the degree to which sediment reworking, postdepositional geochemical alteration, and geochemical uniqueness of individual eruptives facilitate or impede the potential for establishing a tephrostratigraphical framework for the Japan Trench, as well as usage of the tephra record to document arc evolution. Evidence was found that hydration (termed phase 1 alteration) of glass shards increases with age in the Pliocene-Pleistocene, but there is no indication that element leaching (phase 2 alteration) has occurred. Post- or syn-depositional differences in preservational style are shown to have no significant bearing on tephrogeochemical homogeneity and suitability for tephrostratigraphical analysis. Overall, therefore, the volcaniclastic record is suitable for investigating medium- to long-term changes in arc geochemistry and, provided consideration is given to the potential for nonunique geochemical signatures, is suitable for erecting tephrochronological frameworks. A limited number of Pleistocene tephra correlations are suggested in furtherance of this framework goal.

DNA extraction was carried out as described on the MICROBIS project pages (http://icomm.mbl.edu/microbis ) using a commercially available extraction kit. We amplified the hypervariable regions V4-V6 of archaeal and bacterial 16S rRNA genes using PCR and several sets of forward and reverse primers (http://vamps.mbl.edu/resources/primers.php). Massively parallel tag sequencing of the PCR products was carried out on a 454 Life Sciences GS FLX sequencer at Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, MA, following the same experimental conditions for all samples. Sequence reads were submitted to a rigorous quality control procedure based on mothur v30 (doi:10.1128/AEM.01541-09) including denoising of the flow grams using an algorithm based on PyroNoise (doi:10.1038/nmeth.1361), removal of PCR errors and a chimera check using uchime (doi:10.1093/bioinformatics/btr381). The reads were taxonomically assigned according to the SILVA taxonomy (SSURef v119, 07-2014; doi:10.1093/nar/gks1219) implemented in mothur and clustered at 98% ribosomal RNA gene V4-V6 sequence identity. V4-V6 amplicon sequence abundance tables were standardized to account for unequal sampling effort using 1000 (Archaea) and 2300 (Bacteria) randomly chosen sequences without replacement using mothur and then used to calculate inverse Simpson diversity indices and Chao1 richness (doi:10.2307/4615964). Bray-Curtis dissimilarities (doi:10.2307/1942268) between all samples were calculated and used for 2-dimensional non metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordinations with 20 random starts (doi:10.1007/BF02289694). Stress values below 0.2 indicated that the multidimensional dataset was well represented by the 2D ordination. NMDS ordinations were compared and tested using Procrustes correlation analysis (doi:10.1007/BF02291478). All analyses were carried out with the R statistical environment and the packages vegan (available at: http://cran.r-project.org/package=vegan), labdsv (available at: http://cran.r-project.org/package=labdsv), as well as with custom R scripts. Operational taxonomic units at 98% sequence identity (OTU0.03) that occurred only once in the whole dataset were termed absolute single sequence OTUs (SSOabs; doi:10.1038/ismej.2011.132). OTU0.03 sequences that occurred only once in at least one sample, but may occur more often in other samples were termed relative single sequence OTUs (SSOrel). SSOrel are particularly interesting for community ecology, since they comprise rare organisms that might become abundant when conditions change.16S rRNA amplicons and metagenomic reads have been stored in the sequence read archive under SRA project accession number SRP042162.
