O espaço sagrado e os jardins iniciáticos da Quinta da Regaleira

A Quinta da Regaleira é um espaço simbólico sagrado que apresenta nos seus jardins, por um lado referências ao Cristianismo, e a certas Fraternidades iniciáticas e, por outro, referências ao Paganismo, às antigas religiões de Mistérios, à literatura clássica (particularmente à Divina Comédia de Dante). Podemos detectar nela percursos de iniciação, constituídos por poços, subterrâneos, grutas, lagos, os quais estão centrados no tema da "morte e ressurreição", no caminho das Trevas para a Luz.

O design e a interpretação do lugar

O modo de inventar é um acto de cultura que exige uma interacção com a imaginação e um controlo através dos dados culturais dessa mesma imaginação. O Designer move-se não tendo a garantia de eficácia dos seus movimentos, mas com dados de cultura sabe que pode controlar a imaginação, porque admite que o Design é a disciplina com a capacidade de transformar o espaço e o tempo. O Designer sabe que existe uma Teoria da Arte e uma Filosofia da Arte (que engloba todas as artes com estéticas diferentes). Em certos casos nota que há estéticas susceptíveis de serem aplicadas a várias artes, mas que há artes que desenvolvem estéticas (parece) não transmissíveis. Sabe que a poética existe e que sem ela não se consegue operar, pelo que tem de ter um programa de intervenção concreto para que a imaginação se desenvolva e se alcance um objecto concreto.

Fatores intraescolares associados ao abandono escolar no Chile : um estudo de caso

O presente artigo tem como objetivo central identificar os fatores de caráter intraescolar que, quando comparados, têm maior incidência no abandono escolar no ciclo primário de crianças de ambos os sexos que vivem em Cerro Navia, uma zona da cidade de Santiago Chile que se caracteriza por elevados índices de pobreza. A informação qualitativa que serve de base a este trabalho foi obtida através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas aplicadas a duas amostras de 25 casos: uma de menores que abandonaram a escola e outra composta por crianças de ambos os sexos com perfil idêntico que permanecem na escola. Esta informação foi analisada segundo os princípios da análise do discurso e refere-se à perceção dos próprios menores, assim como das suas famílias em relação aos fatores intraescolares de abandono escolar e de permanência dos alunos em escolas públicas de Cerro Navia. Os resultados permitem observar diferenças importantes nos percursos educativos dos que abandonaram a escola e dos que permaneceram na escola, o que indicia o tipo de ações que poderiam adotar os próprios estabelecimentos de ensino de modo a prevenir o abandono escolar precoce dos seus estudantes.

Toward a scholarly edition of Beckett's critical writings

This essay outlines the case for a new, scholarly edition of Beckett's critical writings, one that would be complete and with critical annotation. For the most part these texts (critical writings, tributes, in memoria and epigraphs) have been published in a range of places. As well as in the magazines, newspapers, books and special-issue publications in which pieces originally appeared, a number were collected in Disjecta (Calder 1983 & Grove 1984). This volume, however, is not exhaustive; it misses out a number of important texts (not least Proust) and contains some textual inaccuracies. Furthermore, Beckett's critical writings are currently not available from the UK publishers Faber and the Grove Press Centenary Edition of Beckett's works, the fourth volume of which contains a section entitled ‘Criticism’, presents only three works of criticism by Beckett (Proust, ‘Dante … Bruno . Vico . . Joyce’ and ‘Three Dialogues’). In this essay, we give a brief (and far from exhaustive) overview of the publication history of Beckett's non-fiction prose texts, before outlining some of the editorial challenges they pose. Although Beckett tended to be dismissive of these works, they form an integral part of his canon.

Fatty acid composition of intramuscular fat from Nellore steers fed dry or high moisture corn and calcium salts of fatty acids

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the fatty acid composition of the Longissimus muscle from carcasses of Nellore steers fed diets with calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA) and high moisture corn. Forty eight steers were fed during 70 days four diets containing dry corn (DC), high moisture corn (HM). dry corn plus CSFA (DC-CSFA) or high moisture corn plus CSFA (HM-CSFA). Fatty acid composition of the Longissimus muscle was determined by gas chromatography. Corn type had no effect on the ether extract percentage and in the content of the majority of the fatty acids, although steers fed HMC showed higher levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated/saturated ratio. Feeding CSFA increased ether extract percentage but had no effect on total of saturated, unsaturated and saturated: unsaturated ratio. Both high moisture corn and calcium salts of fatty acids increased CIA (cis9, trans11) and total CIA concentrations in intramuscular fat (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

On the generic identity of Odontophrynus moratoi Jim & Caramaschi, 1980 (Anura, Cycloramphidae)

The generic identity of Odontophrynus moratoi is controversial since the original description due to the presence of intermediate morphological features between the genera Odontophrynus and Proceratophrys. Herein we performed molecular analyses of three genes (16S, cyt b and Rag-1) and recovered O. moratoi deeply imbedded inside a clade containing only Proceratophrys species, appearing as the sister group of Proceratophrys concavitympanum. Therefore, this study formally transfers the species O. moratoi to the genus Proceratophrys [Proceratophrys moratoi (Jim & Caramaschi 1980) comb. nov].

Advertisement call, vocal activity, and geographic distribution of Brachycephalus hermogenesi (Giaretta and Sawaya, 1998) (Anura, Brachycephalidae)

Brachycephalus hermogenesi is an endemic leaf litter inhabitant of the Atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil, whose original distribution included a restricted area near the boundaries of the States of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. We were surprised to find out, while conducting herpetofaunal surveys at Estacao Biologica de Boraceia (EBB), that the background forest insect-like sound we have been searching for corresponded to calling individuals of the species. Males call during the day at high densities, hidden under the leaf litter. Individuals do not answer playback, seem to move very infrequently, and seem to ignore nearby calling activity. We gathered data on annual and daily vocal activity of the species at EBB, observing a total of 1,549 calls given by 31 focal individuals in November 2003 and 2005. The call varies from short single note calls to calls composed of groups of two to seven similar notes emitted at regular intervals. We also extend the known distribution of the species southward to the State of Sao Paulo.

Autoantibody response to chromatographic fractions from oxidized LDL in unstable angina patients and healthy controls

Levels of autoantibodies to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) have been correlated to atherosclerosis; however, contradictory results have been shown. To better understand the role of autoantibodies to oxLDL in atherogenesis, and their potential to predict risk of developing coronary artery disease we investigated the antibody response of unstable angina (UA) patients and healthy controls against chromatographic separated fractions of oxLDL. Five major peaks were detected after chromatographic separation of oxLDL and 10 fractions were collected. Surprisingly, when the response to high molecular weight fractions was analysed, we observed a significant increase in the levels of autoantibodies in controls compared to UA. In contrast, when the autoantibody response to intermediate and low molecular weight fractions was analysed, we observed that the UA group showed consistently higher levels compared with controls. Our data demonstrates that within oxLDL there are major fractions that can be recognized by autoantibodies from either UA patients or healthy individuals, and that the use of total oxLDL as an antigen pool may mask the presence of some antigenic molecules and their corresponding antibodies. Further studies are needed, but the analysis of antibody profiles may indeed open up a novel approach for evaluation and prevention against atherosclerosis.
