There we analyce the first touristic nucleus arouse in the Spanish Mediterranean coast between World War II and the Petroleum Crisis (1945-75). Special attention is payed to the characteristics of these new villages: the relation of their urban frame with nature -original or artificial- and the lack of industry. We make a distintion of three types: cluster nucleus (La Manga and El Saler), tridimentional urbanism (Playa de San Juan y Urbanova) and extreme typologies (Campoamor and Benidorm). With them the cities for vacations are discovered, mainly for second home purpouse (vacation home/holiday home). The panorama after the current crisis is a lineal chain of small urban settlements on the coast. Finally, Finally, we can see how these "secondary cities" without industry and specialized in leisure, are developing to our days until become new cities of services, doubling the existing ones; now they are "the other cities".

La incorporación de la perspectiva de género al planeamiento es una obligación de las administraciones públicas españolas, nacionales, autonómicas y locales. El ayuntamiento de Albacete y la Junta de Comunidades de Castilla La Mancha, en cumplimiento de estos preceptos y en ocasión de la revisión del Plan General de Ordenación Urbana, encargan a la autora del presente artículo la dirección de los equipos de trabajo para la gestión de la participación ciudadana, que se sitúa en la base misma de la consecución de los objetivos propuestos. El trabajo presentado se centra en la experiencia metodológica de la participación in situ, en la investigación que la sustentó y en las innovaciones que aporta. Se exponen los mecanismos e instrumentos habilitados para la participación que, habida cuenta de la casi total ausencia de referencias en España, constituyen una primera aproximación de posibles buenas prácticas a aplicar en otros proyectos similares.

Se muestra el estudio de la evolución del barrio residencial de Benalúa, una de las áreas más singulares y valoradas de la ciudad de Alicante, España, que ha transformado completamente su imagen original. Se hace una lectura global cronológica desde su formación y primera consolidación (1883-1900) hasta el momento actual (2011) y, como conclusiones, se identifican y destacan las claves que han propiciado mantener su identidad en el complejo proceso de adaptación y cambio a las nuevas demandas y necesidades urbanas; cualidades que devienen, exclusiva y directamente, de la calidad urbanística y validez de su proyecto. Como base del análisis, se incluyen algunos de los materiales estudiados en el transcurso de la investigación, la mayoría inéditos y de amplio contenido gráfico, con especial interés en los proyectos de obra.

La demolición del Grupo Escolar “Francisco Giner de los Ríos” supuso una pérdida incuestionable para la ciudad de Alicante (España), desapareciendo uno de los más relevantes ejemplos racionalistas, símbolo de modernidad y del desarrollo que en materia de enseñanza significó en la ciudad el “Plan de Construcción de Escuelas y Ordenación Escolar” de 1931. Con el fin de contribuir a subsanar el vacío documental que antecedió su demolición, el presente artículo muestra los resultados del estudio de las fases determinantes de la historia del edificio: proyecto (1933), construcción (1934-1935), reconstrucción y consolidación (1943-1944). Se concluyen las causas que originaron la ruina del inmueble, el alcance y magnitud de los daños y las avanzadas técnicas empleadas en su recuperación, prestando especial interés a las intervenciones de cimentación y consolidación del terreno, pilotajes e inyecciones de cemento, prácticas de relevancia internacional en el periodo de posguerra en España y Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Although deterministic models of the evolution of mass tourism coastal resorts predict an almost inevitable decline over time, theoretical frameworks of the evolution and restructuring policies of mature destinations should be revised to reflect the complex and dynamic way in which these destinations evolve and interact with the tourism market and global socio-economic environment. The present study examines Benidorm because its urban and tourism model and large-scale tourism supply and demand make it one of the most unique destinations on the Mediterranean coast. The investigation reveals the need to adopt theories and models that are not purely deterministic. The dialectic interplay between external factors and the internal factors inherent in this destination simultaneously reveals a complex and diverse stage of maturity and the ability of destinations to create their own future.

Background: For a comprehensive health sector response to intimate partner violence (IPV), interventions should target individual and health facility levels, along with the broader health systems level which includes issues of governance, financing, planning, service delivery, monitoring and evaluation, and demand generation. This study aims to map and explore the integration of IPV response in the Spanish national health system. Methods: Information was collected on five key areas based on WHO recommendations: policy environment, protocols, training, monitoring and prevention. A systematic review of public documents was conducted to assess 39 indicators in each of Spain’s 17 regional health systems. In addition, we performed qualitative content analysis of 26 individual interviews with key informants responsible for coordinating the health sector response to IPV in Spain. Results: In 88% of the 17 autonomous regions, the laws concerning IPV included the health sector response, but the integration of IPV in regional health plans was just 41%. Despite the existence of a supportive national structure, responding to IPV still relies strongly on the will of health professionals. All seventeen regions had published comprehensive protocols to guide the health sector response to IPV, but participants recognized that responding to IPV was more complex than merely following the steps of a protocol. Published training plans existed in 43% of the regional health systems, but none had institutionalized IPV training in medical and nursing schools. Only 12% of regional health systems collected information on the quality of the IPV response, and there are many limitations to collecting information on IPV within health services, for example underreporting, fears about confidentiality, and underuse of data for monitoring purposes. Finally, preventive activities that were considered essential were not institutionalized anywhere. Conclusions: Within the Spanish health system, differences exist in terms of achievements both between regions and between the areas assessed. Progress towards integration of IPV has been notable at the level of policy, less outstanding regarding health service delivery, and very limited in terms of preventive actions.

Evacuation route planning is a fundamental task for building engineering projects. Safety regulations are established so that all occupants are driven on time out of a building to a secure place when faced with an emergency situation. As an example, Spanish building code requires the planning of evacuation routes on large and, usually, public buildings. Engineers often plan these routes on single building projects, repeatedly assigning clusters of rooms to each emergency exit in a trial-and-error process. But problems may arise for a building complex where distribution and use changes make visual analysis cumbersome and sometimes unfeasible. This problem could be solved by using well-known spatial analysis techniques, implemented as a specialized software able to partially emulate engineer reasoning. In this paper we propose and test an easily reproducible methodology that makes use of free and open source software components for solving a case study. We ran a complete test on a building floor at the University of Alicante (Spain). This institution offers a web service (WFS) that allows retrieval of 2D geometries from any building within its campus. We demonstrate how geospatial technologies and computational geometry algorithms can be used for automating the creation and optimization of evacuation routes. In our case study, the engineers’ task is to verify that the load capacity of each emergency exit does not exceed the standards specified by Spain’s current regulations. Using Dijkstra’s algorithm, we obtain the shortest paths from every room to the most appropriate emergency exit. Once these paths are calculated, engineers can run simulations and validate, based on path statistics, different cluster configurations. Techniques and tools applied in this research would be helpful in the design and risk management phases of any complex building project.

Urban researchers and planners are often interested in understanding how economic activities are distributed in urban regions, what forces influence their special pattern and how urban structure and functions are mutually dependent. In this paper, we want to show how an algorithm for ranking the nodes in a network can be used to understand and visualize certain commercial activities of a city. The first part of the method consists of collecting real information about different types of commercial activities at each location in the urban network of the city of Murcia, Spain. Four clearly differentiated commercial activities are studied, such as restaurants and bars, shops, banks and supermarkets or department stores, but obviously we can study other. The information collected is then quantified by means of a data matrix, which is used as the basis for the implementation of a PageRank algorithm which produces a ranking of all the nodes in the network, according to their significance within it. Finally, we visualize the resulting classification using a colour scale that helps us to represent the business network.

The texts collected are a sample of the topics for study and debate that have been part of the Urban Planning 1 subject in the second year of the Bachelor Degree in Architecture during the academic year 2014-2015. These notes have been prepared by students as part of exercises of debate and presentation. The main aim of these exercises is to raise different questions about topics that have formed part of the discipline of Urban Studies for years. The implantation of new university degrees within the European Higher Education Area implies the need of innovative methodologies in teaching and learning to improve the skills and competencies of students and to answer the growing needs that society continuously demands to heritage management experts. The present work shows an application of the teaching methodology proposed during the international workshop entitled “I International Planning Preservation Workshop. Learning from Al Andalus”, which included the participation of the University of Alicante and Granada, Università Politecnico di Milano and Hunter College City University of New York; where we tried to dissolve traditional boundaries derived of interuniversity cooperation programs. The main objective of the workshop was to discuss and debate the role of urban Historical Centers within the Global Heritage by the integrated work through multidisciplinary teams and the creation of a permanent international working group between these universities to both teach and research. The methodology of this workshop was very participatory and considered the idea of a new learning process generated by "a journey experience." A trip from global to local (from the big city to the small village) but also a trip from the local (historical) part of a big city to the global dimension of contemporary historical villages identified by the students through a system of exhibition panels in affinity groups, specific projects proposed by lecturers and teachers or the generation of publications in various areas (texts, photographs, videos, etc.). So, the participation of the students in this multidisciplinary meeting has enhanced their capacity for self-criticism in several disciplines and has promoted their ability to perform learning and research strategies in an autonomous way. As a result, it has been established a permanent international work structure for the development of projects of the Historical City. This relationship has generated the publication of several books whose contents have reflected the conclusions developed in the workshop and several teaching proposals shared between those institutions. All these aspects have generated a new way of understanding the teaching process through a journey, in order to study the representative role of university in the historical heritage and to make students (from planning, heritage management, architecture, geography, sociology, history or engineering areas) be compromised on searching strategies for sustainable development in the Contemporary City.

El presente artículo describe la construcción de Benalúa, según proyecto del arquitecto José Guardiola Picó (1883), una de las áreas más singulares de la ciudad de Alicante -España-. Se realiza una exposición cronológica desde su concepción, documentando las tramitaciones legales que conllevaron su aprobación, hasta el cese en sus funciones de la Sociedad Anónima Los Diez Amigos, promotora y constructora del barrio (1896), sin finalizar con éxito el proyecto emprendido. Del estudio se concluyen tanto los aspectos más relevantes que caracterizaron el desarrollo de las obras del barrio como las causas que propiciaron el abandono de la Sociedad, siendo éstas exclusivamente económicas, con especial interés en la problemática que llegó a generar el proyecto y ejecución del Ensanche de Alicante.
