Decreasing fires in a Mediterranean region (1970-2010, NE Spain)

We analyse the recent evolution of fires in Catalonia (north-eastern Iberian Peninsula), a typical Mediterranean region. We examine a homogeneous series of forest fires in the period 1970-2010. During this period, more than 9000 fire events greater than 0.5 ha were recorded, and the total burned area was more than 400 kha. Our analysis shows that both the burned area and number of fire series display a decreasing trend. Superposed onto this general decrease, strong oscillations on shorter time scales are evident. After the large fires of 1986 and 1994, the increased effort in fire prevention and suppression could explain part of the decreasing trend. Although it is often stated that fires have increased in Mediterranean regions, the higher efficiency in fire detection could have led to spurious trends and misleading conclusions.

This book is the result of a one-year seminar series"Islam médiéval d"Occident (VIIe-XVe)", held at the Colegio de España in Paris in 2006-07 by the Association des doctorants en histoire des mondes musulmans médievaux (Diwan http://diwan.hypotheses.org), and a second volume focusing on Arabization is expected (p. 33). The contributors" experience, alongside their university and research backgrounds, have led to the publication of articles of an outstandingly high level throughout this book. This scholarly achievement is combined with a thought-provoking theoretical framework, where Arabization and Islamization give a common theme to the proceedings, which are developed in four parts.

Organisaatiokulttuurin muutoksista viestiminen 1970- luvulta nykypäivään. Case UPM- Kymmene Oyj/ Kaukas

Tässä tutkielmassa on tarkasteltu organisaatiokulttuurin muuttumista ja siitä viestimistä case- yrityksessä. Tutkielman tavoitteena on ollut hahmottaa kuva yrityksen virallisesta tavasta viestiä muutoksista henkilöstölle ja ulkopuolisille intresseille. Tutkimusmenetelmänä on käytetty henkilöstölehtien sisältöanalyysia. Henkilöstölehtiä on tarkasteltu vuosilta 1974- 98 Organisaatiokulttuurin muuttuminen on monivaiheinen ja alati jatkuva prosessi. Jokainen organisaatiokulttuuri muuttaa muotoaan tarkoituksellisesti tai ilman, toiset nopeammin, toiset hitaammin. Yritysten tavoitteena muutoksissa on luoda ja ylläpitää vahvaa organisaatiokulttuuria, jonka voimin yritys selviää paremmin suuristakin muutoksista. Organisaatiokulttuuri on jatkuvasti muuttuva ja muutettava kokonaisuus, joka vaikuttaa kaikkeen organisaatiossa ja jota muovaavat niin yrityksen sisäiset kuin ulkoisetkin asiat. Johdon velvollisuutena on välittää informaatiota muutoksista henkilöstölle ja muille sidosryhmille oikeaan aikaan ja oikealla tavalla.
