A consequence in patients with d-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) and tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) and right ventricular failure. Myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE) permits the determination of the myocardial microvascular density reflected by the relative myocardial blood volume (rBV; ml/ml). This study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between RVH and myocardial microvascular changes by quantitative MCE in patients with d-TGA and TOF.

In adults with congenital heart disease and a systemic right ventricle, subaortic ventricular systolic dysfunction is common. Echocardiographic assessment of systolic right ventricular (RV) function in these patients is important but challenging. The aim of the present study was to assess the reliability of conventional echocardiographic RV functional parameters to quantify the systolic performance of a subaortic right ventricle. We compared 56 contemporary echocardiograms and cardiac magnetic resonance studies in 37 adults, aged 26.9 ± 7.4 years, with complete transposition and a subaortic right ventricle. The fractional area change (FAC), lateral tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, lateral RV systolic motion velocities by tissue Doppler, RV myocardial performance index, and the rate of systolic RV pressure increase (dp/dt) measured across the tricuspid regurgitant jet were assessed by echocardiography and correlated with the cardiac magnetic resonance-derived RV ejection fraction (EF). The mean RVEF was 48.0 ± 7.8%. FAC (r(2) = 0.206, p = 0.001) and dp/dt (r(2) = 0.173, p = 0.009) significantly correlated with RVEF, and the other nongeometric echocardiographic parameters failed to show a significant correlation with RVEF by linear regression analysis. FAC <33% and dp/dt <1,000 mm Hg/s identified a RVEF of <50% with a sensitivity of 77% and 69% and a specificity of 58% and 87%, respectively. In conclusion, in patients with a systemic right ventricle, routine nongeometric echocardiographic parameters of RV function correlated weakly with cardiac magnetic resonance-derived EF. RV FAC and the measurement of the rate of systolic RV pressure increase (dp/dt) should be preferentially used to assess systemic systolic function in adult patients with a subaortic right ventricle.

Mammalian birth is accompanied by profound changes in metabolic rate that can be described in terms of body size relationship (Kleiber's rule). Whereas the fetus, probably as an adaptation to the low intrauterine pO2, exhibits an "inappropriately" low, adult-like specific metabolic rate, the term neonate undergoes a rapid metabolic increase up to the level to be expected from body size. A similar, albeit slowed, "switching-on" of metabolic size allometry is found in human preterm neonates whereas animals that are normally born in a very immature state are able to retard or even suppress the postnatal metabolic increase in favor of weight gain and O2 supply. Moreover, small immature mammalian neonates exhibit a temporary oxyconforming behavior which enhances their hypoxia tolerance, yet is lost to the extent by which the size-adjusted metabolic rate is "locked" by increasing mitochondrial density. Beyond the perinatal period, there are no other deviations from metabolic size allometry among mammals except in hibernation where the temporary "switching-off" of Kleiber's rule is accompanied by a deep reduction in tissue pO2. This gives support to the hypothesis that the postnatal metabolic increase represents an "escape from oxygen" similar to the evolutionary roots of mitochondrial respiration, and that the overall increase in specific metabolic rate with decreasing size might contribute to prevent tissues from O2 toxicity.

In most mammals, dispersal rates are higher in males than in females. Using behavioural and genetic data of individually marked bats, we show that this general pattern is reversed in the greater sac-winged bat (Saccopteryx bilineata). Dispersal is significantly female biased and male philopatry in combination with rare male immigration causes a patrilineal colony structure. Female dispersal helps avoid father-daughter inbreeding, as male tenure exceeds female age at first breeding in this bat species. Furthermore, our data suggest that females may engage in extra-harem copulations to mate with genetically dissimilar males, and thus avoid their male descendants as mating partners. Acquaintance with the natal colony might facilitate territory takeover since male sac-winged bats queue for harem access. Given the virtual absence of male immigration and the possible lower reproductive success of dispersing males, we argue that enhancing the likelihood of settlement of male descendants could be adaptive despite local mate competition. We conclude that resource defence by males is important in promoting male philopatry, and argue that the potential overlap of male tenure and female first conception is the driving force for females to disperse.

BACKGROUND: Several epidemiological studies show that inhalation of particulate matter may cause increased pulmonary morbidity and mortality. Of particular interest are the ultrafine particles that are particularly toxic. In addition more and more nanoparticles are released into the environment; however, the potential health effects of these nanoparticles are yet unknown. OBJECTIVES: To avoid particle toxicity studies with animals many cell culture models have been developed during the past years. METHODS: This review focuses on the most commonly used in vitro epithelial airway and alveolar models to study particle-cell interactions and particle toxicity and highlights advantages and disadvantages of the different models. RESULTS/CONCLUSION: There are many lung cell culture models but none of these models seems to be perfect. However, they might be a great tool to perform basic research or toxicity tests. The focus here is on 3D and co-culture models, which seem to be more realistic than monocultures.
