Disaggregation of polygons of surficial geology and soil maps using spatial modelling and legacy data

Examples from the Murray-Darling basin in Australia are used to illustrate different methods of disaggregation of reconnaissance-scale maps. One approach for disaggregation revolves around the de-convolution of the soil-landscape paradigm elaborated during a soil survey. The descriptions of soil ma units and block diagrams in a soil survey report detail soil-landscape relationships or soil toposequences that can be used to disaggregate map units into component landscape elements. Toposequences can be visualised on a computer by combining soil maps with digital elevation data. Expert knowledge or statistics can be used to implement the disaggregation. Use of a restructuring element and k-means clustering are illustrated. Another approach to disaggregation uses training areas to develop rules to extrapolate detailed mapping into other, larger areas where detailed mapping is unavailable. A two-level decision tree example is presented. At one level, the decision tree method is used to capture mapping rules from the training area; at another level, it is used to define the domain over which those rules can be extrapolated. Social Movements and the Dynamics of Rural Territorial Development in Latin America

This special section brings together 4 of the 12 studies conducted within a research program analyzing the relationships among social mobilization, governance. and rural development in contemporary Latin America. The introduction Lives an overview of the contemporary significance of social movements For rural development dynamics in the region, and of the principal insights of the section papers and the broader research program of which they were a part. This significance varies Lis an effect of two distinct and uneven geographics: the geography of social movements themselves and the geography of the rural political economy. The paper identifies several such characteristics. The general pattern is that movements have had far more effect oil widening the political inclusiveness of rural development than they have oil improving its economic inclusiveness and dynamism. Social Movements Beyond the Iron Cage: Weak Ties in Territorial Development

The incentives and governance system of organizations are important in explaining how they behave in localized development processes. This article builds on the observation that the literature on territorial development does not generally address the action of social movements. At the same time, research on social movements rarely studies their effects on the territories ill which they act. This text is a contribution to fill this gap. It compares two social movement organizations: a trade union federation and a credit cooperative system operating throughout southern Brazil, Both organizations share common origins and social bases, yet their impacts oil territories have been quite different. The analysis focuses Oil the social ties that link trade unions and cooperatives to their territories to show that governance systems may explain the performance of each organization, especially with regard to their capacity for innovation. Riddling and invariance for discontinuous maps preserving Lebesgue measure

In this paper we use the mixture of topological and measure-theoretic dynamical approaches to consider riddling of invariant sets for some discontinuous maps of compact regions of the plane that preserve two-dimensional Lebesgue measure. We consider maps that are piecewise continuous and with invertible except on a closed zero measure set. We show that riddling is an invariant property that can be used to characterize invariant sets, and prove results that give a non-trivial decomposion of what we call partially riddled invariant sets into smaller invariant sets. For a particular example, a piecewise isometry that arises in signal processing (the overflow oscillation map), we present evidence that the closure of the set of trajectories that accumulate on the discontinuity is fully riddled. This supports a conjecture that there are typically an infinite number of periodic orbits for this system.

Multiple maps and activity-dependent representational plasticity in the anterior Wulst of the adult barn owl (Tyto alba)

In the present study we addressed the issue of somatosensory representation and plasticity in a nonmammalian species, the barn owl. Multiunit mapping techniques were used to examine the representation of the specialized receptor surface of the claw in the anterior Wulst. We found dual somatotopic mirror image representations of the skin surface of the contralateral claw. In addition, we examined both representations 2 weeks after denervation of the distal skin surface of a single digit. In both representations, the denervated digital representation became responsive to stimulation of the adjacent, mutually functional, digit. The mutability and multiple representations indicates that the Wulst provides the owl with sensory processing capabilities analogous to those in mammals.

Pseudo-randomness of round-off errors in discretized linear maps on the plane

We analyze the sequences of round-off errors of the orbits of a discretized planar rotation, from a probabilistic angle. It was shown [Bosio & Vivaldi, 2000] that for a dense set of parameters, the discretized map can be embedded into an expanding p-adic dynamical system, which serves as a source of deterministic randomness. For each parameter value, these systems can generate infinitely many distinct pseudo-random sequences over a finite alphabet, whose average period is conjectured to grow exponentially with the bit-length of the initial condition (the seed). We study some properties of these symbolic sequences, deriving a central limit theorem for the deviations between round-off and exact orbits, and obtain bounds concerning repetitions of words. We also explore some asymptotic problems computationally, verifying, among other things, that the occurrence of words of a given length is consistent with that of an abstract Bernoulli sequence.

Patrimônio territorial integrado e espaço cotidiano : o planejamento urbano interativo do centro de Vitória (ES)

O conceito de patrimônio territorial e cultural amplia o conceito tradicional de patrimônio, segundo o qual o monumento se restringe a sua materialidade e permanece isolado de seu território. A ambiência e a vivência desse patrimônio ganham importância visto que são essenciais ao seu reconhecimento e a impressão de pertencimento e de identificação por parte de seus usuários. Tais conceitos vão de encontro à mercantilização do patrimônio e ao seu uso puramente turístico, tão comuns na contemporaneidade. Este trabalho traz estudos e discussões referentes ao tema, que auxiliaram na análise da evolução histórica de Vitória, tendo sua origem na região central. Tais abordagens levaram ao entendimento da construção da cidade e dos resultados encontrados na atualidade decorrentes desse desenvolvimento. O conhecimento sobre a temática do patrimônio territorial e cultural e o entendimento histórico do Centro de Vitória tornaram possíveis algumas avaliações referentes aos procedimentos adotados no Planejamento Urbano Interativo do Centro, um programa elaborado pela prefeitura de Vitória em 2006.

Metodologia de representação identitária do patrimônio territorial : a água como elemento de identidade em Linhares/ES

Apresenta primeiramente o conceito de desenvolvimento local autossustentável dentro do enfoque territorialista. Mostra também o conceito de patrimônio territorial e o de representação identitária do território como instrumento de preservação do patrimônio, neste caso o territorial. O enfoque territorialista é adotado como base teórica para a construção do roteiro metodológico de representação identitária do território com vistas à preservação do patrimônio tendo como objeto empírico o município de Linhares/ES, que passa por um processo de intenso desenvolvimento de seu território e que apresenta um rico patrimônio, no que diz respeito aos recursos naturais, em especial o hídrico. Nos últimos anos tem-se registrado um crescimento forte dos instrumentos disponíveis para a produção de imagens do território, neste caso o uso da tecnologia de Sistemas de Informações Geográficas. Por meio deste recurso, adotado na Escola Territorialista Italiana, representa-se o patrimônio que constitui o território municipal, tendo como produtos finais o Atlas do patrimônio territorial no município de Linhares/ES e o Roteiro metodológico de representação identitária do patrimônio territorial.
