Internet ha rivoluzionato il modo di comunicare degli individui. Siamo testimoni della nascita e dello sviluppo di un'era caratterizzata dalla disponibilità di informazione libera e accessibile a tutti. Negli ultimi anni grazie alla diffusione di smartphone, tablet e altre tipologie di dispositivi connessi, è cambiato il fulcro dell'innovazione spostandosi dalle persone agli oggetti. E' così che nasce il concetto di Internet of Things, termine usato per descrivere la rete di comunicazione creata tra i diversi dispositivi connessi ad Internet e capaci di interagire in autonomia. Gli ambiti applicativi dell'Internet of Things spaziano dalla domotica alla sanità, dall'environmental monitoring al concetto di smart cities e così via. L'obiettivo principale di tale disciplina è quello di migliorare la vita delle persone grazie a sistemi che siano in grado di interagire senza aver bisogno dell'intervento dell'essere umano. Proprio per la natura eterogenea della disciplina e in relazione ai diversi ambiti applicativi, nell'Internet of Things si può incorrere in problemi derivanti dalla presenza di tecnologie differenti o di modalità eterogenee di memorizzazione dei dati. A questo proposito viene introdotto il concetto di Internet of Things collaborativo, termine che indica l'obiettivo di realizzare applicazioni che possano garantire interoperabilità tra i diversi ecosistemi e tra le diverse fonti da cui l'Internet of Things attinge, sfruttando la presenza di piattaforme di pubblicazione di Open Data. L'obiettivo di questa tesi è stato quello di creare un sistema per l'aggregazione di dati da due piattaforme, ThingSpeak e Sparkfun, con lo scopo di unificarli in un unico database ed estrarre informazioni significative dai dati tramite due tecniche di Data Mining: il Dictionary Learning e l'Affinity Propagation. Vengono illustrate le due metodologie che rientrano rispettivamente tra le tecniche di classificazione e di clustering.

Med begreppet "Internet of Things" menas att ett objekt ur den riktiga världen blir en del av internet. Tunabyggen i Borlänge planerar att implementera ett sådant informationssystem som med hjälp av sensorer och en ständig internetuppkoppling håller uppsikt över temperatur och luftfuktighet i utvalda lokaler. Det är ett enkelt system som till synes inte har så stora effekter på den nuvarande verksamheten. De ekonomiska effekterna går ofta att räkna på i förhand men effekterna på personal, miljö och rutiner kan glömmas bort. Vi har därför med detta examensarbete undersökt vilka inledande effekter som kan tänkas uppkomma efter implementering av ett nytt informationssystem med "Internet of Things" funktionalitet i en verksamhet. Detta sker inom kategorierna ekonomi, arbetsmiljö, miljöpåverkan och systemförvaltning. För att kunna besvara detta har vi gjort en fallstudie baserad på en scenariometodik som består av fyra faser. Fas 1, där vi fick vårt Case och skapade en förståelse för scenariofältet. Fas 2, där vi identifierade nyckelfaktorer. Detta har gjorts genom en litteraturstudie samt intervju med berörd personal på Tunabyggen. Fas 3, där analysen av dessa nyckelfaktorer skedde genom nulägesanalys och framtidsanalys av nyckelfaktorer. Fas 4, där vi genererade scenarier av de analyserade nyckelfaktorerna. Det har sedan gjorts en SWOT-analys för att belysa styrkor, svagheter, möjligheter och hot. Resultatet visar tydliga tecken på att det kommer att bli många effekter för Tunabyggen efter implementering av det nya informationssystemet som yttrar sig i alla kategorier. Slutsatsen är att vid implementation av ett informationssystem som detta är effekterna många. Detta är något som vi anser bör beaktas av alla verksamheter som har tankar på att införskaffa ett nytt informationssystem. De bör inte bara utvärdera informationssystem rent ekonomiskt utan borde ta i beaktning att det finns ett antal andra faktorer som har en avgörande roll om implementation av informationssystem ska bli lyckad.

Multimedia Internet KEYing protocol (MIKEY) aims at establishing secure credentials between two communicating entities. However, existing MIKEY modes fail to meet the requirements of low-power and low-processing devices. To address this issue, we combine two previously proposed approaches to introduce a new distributed and compressed MIKEY mode for the Internet of Things. Indeed, relying on a cooperative approach, a set of third parties is used to discharge the constrained nodes from heavy computational operations. Doing so, the preshared mode is used in the constrained part of network, while the public key mode is used in the unconstrained part of the network. Furthermore, to mitigate the communication cost we introduce a new header compression scheme that reduces the size of MIKEY’s header from 12 Bytes to 3 Bytes in the best compression case. Preliminary results show that our proposed mode is energy preserving whereas its security properties are preserved untouched.

Manufacturing companies have passed from selling uniquely tangible products to adopting a service-oriented approach to generate steady and continuous revenue streams. Nowadays, equipment and machine manufacturers possess technologies to track and analyze product-related data for obtaining relevant information from customers’ use towards the product after it is sold. The Internet of Things on Industrial environments will allow manufacturers to leverage lifecycle product traceability for innovating towards an information-driven services approach, commonly referred as “Smart Services”, for achieving improvements in support, maintenance and usage processes. The aim of this study is to conduct a literature review and empirical analysis to present a framework that describes a customer-oriented approach for developing information-driven services leveraged by the Internet of Things in manufacturing companies. The empirical study employed tools for the assessment of customer needs for analyzing the case company in terms of information requirements and digital needs. The literature review supported the empirical analysis with a deep research on product lifecycle traceability and digitalization of product-related services within manufacturing value chains. As well as the role of simulation-based technologies on supporting the “Smart Service” development process. The results obtained from the case company analysis show that the customers mainly demand information that allow them to monitor machine conditions, machine behavior on different geographical conditions, machine-implement interactions, and resource and energy consumption. Put simply, information outputs that allow them to increase machine productivity for maximizing yields, save time and optimize resources in the most sustainable way. Based on customer needs assessment, this study presents a framework to describe the initial phases of a “Smart Service” development process, considering the requirements of Smart Engineering methodologies.

Abstract: After developing many sensor networks using custom protocols to save energy and minimise code complexity - we have now experimented with standards-based designs. These use IPv6 (6LowPAN), RPL routing, Coap for interfaces and data access and protocol buffers for data encapsulation. Deployments in the Cairngorm mountains have shown the capabilities and limitations of the implementations. This seminar will outline the hardware and software we used and discuss the advantages of the more standards-based approach. At the same time we have been progressing with high quality imaging of cultural heritage using the RTIdomes - so some results and designs will be shown as well. So this seminar will cover peat-bogs to museums, binary-HTTP-like REST to 3500 year old documents written on clay.

Abstract: There is a lot of hype around the Internet of Things along with talk about 100 billion devices within 10 years time. The promise of innovative new services and efficiency savings is fueling interest in a wide range of potential applications across many sectors including smart homes, healthcare, smart grids, smart cities, retail, and smart industry. However, the current reality is one of fragmentation and data silos. W3C is seeking to fix that by exposing IoT platforms through the Web with shared semantics and data formats as the basis for interoperability. This talk will address the abstractions needed to move from a Web of pages to a Web of things, and introduce the work that is being done on standards and on open source projects for a new breed of Web servers on microcontrollers to cloud based server farms. Speaker Biography -Dave Raggett : Dave has been involved at the heart of web standards since 1992, and part of the W3C Team since 1995. As well as working on standards, he likes to dabble with software, and more recently with IoT hardware. He has participated in a wide range of European research projects on behalf of W3C/ERCIM. He currently focuses on Web payments, and realising the potential for the Web of Things as an evolution from the Web of pages. Dave has a doctorate from the University of Oxford. He is a visiting professor at the University of the West of England, and lives in the UK in a small town near to Bath.

The Internet of Things is a vision for a world of interconnected smart devices. We present an alternative vision based on a review of literature that emphasizes the importance and role of objects in social relations. We situate this work in relation to a conceptual understanding of objects and sociality, and note some methodological implications of a more object-centred sociality that may suggest design opportunities alongside the emerging Internet of Things.

This one-day workshop brings together researchers and practitioners to share knowledge and practices on how people can connect and interact with the Internet of Things in a playful way. Open to participants with a diverse range of interests and expertise, and by exploring novel ways to playfully connect people through their everyday objects and activities, the workshop will facilitate discussion across a range of HCI discipline areas. The outcomes from the workshop will include an archive of participants' initial position papers along with the materials created during the workshop. The result will be a road map to support the development of a Model of Playful Connectedness, focusing on how best to design and make playful networks of things, identifying the challenges that need to be addressed in order to do so.

It is anticipated that constrained devices in the Internet of Things (IoT) will often operate in groups to achieve collective monitoring or management tasks. For sensitive and mission-critical sensing tasks, securing multicast applications is therefore highly desirable. To secure group communications, several group key management protocols have been introduced. However, the majority of the proposed solutions are not adapted to the IoT and its strong processing, storage, and energy constraints. In this context, we introduce a novel decentralized and batch-based group key management protocol to secure multicast communications. Our protocol is simple and it reduces the rekeying overhead triggered by membership changes in dynamic and mobile groups and guarantees both backward and forward secrecy. To assess our protocol, we conduct a detailed analysis with respect to its communcation and storage costs. This analysis is validated through simulation to highlight energy gains. The obtained results show that our protocol outperforms its peers with respect to keying overhead and the mobility of members.

This seminar takes the form of a research discussion which will focus on the Internet of Things (IoT) research being undertaken in WAIS and other research groups in ECS. IoT is a significant emerging research area, with funding for research available from many channels including new H2020 programmes and the TSB. We have seen examples of IoT devices being built in WAIS and other ECS groups, e.g. in sensor networking, energy monitoring via Zigbee devices, and of course Erica the Rhino (a Big Thing!). The goal of the session is to briefly present such examples of existing Things in our lab with the intent of seeding discussion on open research questions, and therefore future work we could do towards new Things being deployed for experimentation in Building 32 or its environs. The session will discuss what 'things' we have, how they work, what new 'things' might we want to create and deploy, what components we might need to enable this, and how we might interact with these objects.

As a subset of the Internet of Things (IoT), the Web of Things (WoT) shares many characteristics with wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs) and ubiquitous computing systems (Ubicomp). Yet to a far greater degree than the IoT, WSANs or Ubicomp, the WoT will integrate physical and information objects, necessitating a means to model and reason about a range of context types that have hitherto received little or no attention from the RE community. RE practice is only now developing the means to support WSANs and Ubicomp system development, including faltering first steps in the representation of context. We argue that these techniques will need to be developed further, with a particular focus on rich context types, if RE is to support WoT application development. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

El principal objetivo de Internet of Things (IoT) es integrar las tecnologías informáticas en el quehacer cotidiano de las personas, facilitando su interacción con un entorno de dispositivos interconectados, pero el estado actual del arte hace que dicha interacción esté aún lejos de resultar trivial, precisando de continua intervención del usuario. Como alternativa a esta situación, iniciativas emergentes como la de Internet of People (IoP) pretenden integrar de forma más efectiva el IoT en la vida de las personas. En línea con este propósito, el modelo People as a Service (PeaaS) facilita estas tareas por medio del uso del teléfono móvil como interfaz del usuario con el IoT y haciendo uso del contexto del usuario del mismo. PeaaS permite elaborar un perfil sociológico del usuario, que puede ser explotado por el mismo y servido a terceros de forma segura y controlada. En este trabajo presentamos una aplicación móvil para la supervisión de personas afectadas de alzhéimer mediante el aprendizaje y monitorización de sus rutinas como prueba de concepto del modelo PeaaS, teniendo como resultado una funcionalidad que va mucho más allá de la ofrecida por otros productos similares en este campo, y una tecnología que es base para infinidad de aplicaciones que provoquen el avance hacia IoP.

This dissertation deals with the development of a project concerning a demonstration in the scope of the Supply Chain 6 of the Internet of Energy (IoE) project: the Remote Monitoring Emulator, which bears my personal contribution in several sections. IoE is a project of international relevance, that means to establish an interoperability standard as regards the electric power production and utilization infrastructure, using Smart Space platforms. The future perspectives of IoE have to do with a platform for electrical power trade-of, the Smart Grid, whose energy is produced by decentralized renewable sources and whose services are exploited primarily according to the Internet of Things philosophy. The main consumers of this kind of smart technology will be Smart Houses (that is to say, buildings controlled by an autonomous system for electrical energy management that is interoperable with the Smart Grid) and Electric Mobility, that is a smart and automated management regarding movement and, overall, recharging of electrical vehicles. It is precisely in the latter case study that the project Remote Monitoring Emulator takes place. It consists in the development of a simulated platform for the management of an electrical vehicle recharging in a city. My personal contribution to this project lies in development and modeling of the simulation platform, of its counterpart in a mobile application and implementation of a city service prototype. This platform shall, ultimately, make up a demonstrator system exploiting the same device which a real user, inside his vehicle, would use. The main requirements that this platform shall satisfy will be interoperability, expandability and relevance to standards, as it needs to communicate with other development groups and to effectively respond to internal changes that can affect IoE.

A medida que la sociedad avanza, la cantidad de datos almacenados en sistemas de información y procesados por las aplicaciones y servidores software se eleva exponencialmente. Además, las nuevas tecnologías han confiado su desarrollo en la red internacionalmente conectada: Internet. En consecuencia, se han aprovechado las conexiones máquina a máquina (M2M) mediante Internet y se ha desarrollado el concepto de "Internet de las Cosas", red de dispositivos y terminales donde cualquier objeto cotidiano puede establecer conexiones con otros objetos o con un teléfono inteligente mediante los servicios desplegados en dicha red. Sin embargo, estos nuevos datos y eventos se deben procesar en tiempo real y de forma eficaz, para reaccionar ante cualquier situación. Así, las arquitecturas orientadas a eventos solventan la comprensión del intercambio de mensajes en tiempo real. De esta forma, una EDA (Event-Driven Architecture) brinda la posibilidad de implementar una arquitectura software con una definición exhaustiva de los mensajes, notificándole al usuario los hechos que han ocurrido a su alrededor y las acciones tomadas al respecto. Este Trabajo Final de Grado se centra en el estudio de las arquitecturas orientadas a eventos, contrastándolas con el resto de los principales patrones arquitectónicos. Esta comparación se ha efectuado atendiendo a los requisitos no funcionales de cada uno, como, por ejemplo, la seguridad frente a amenazas externas. Asimismo, el objetivo principal es el estudio de las arquitecturas EDA (Event-Driven Architecture) y su relación con la red de Internet de las Cosas, que permite a cualquier dispositivo acceder a los servicios desplegados en esa red mediante Internet. El objeto del TFG es observar y verificar las ventajas de esta arquitectura, debido a su carácter de tipo inmediato, mediante el envío y recepción de mensajes en tiempo real y de forma asíncrona. También se ha realizado un estudio del estado del arte de estos patrones de arquitectura software, así como de la red de IoT (Internet of Things) y sus servicios. Por otro lado, junto con este TFG se ha desarrollado una simulación de una EDA completa, con todos sus elementos: productores, consumidores y procesador de eventos complejo, además de la visualización de los datos. Para ensalzar los servicios prestados por la red de IoT y su relación con una arquitectura EDA, se ha implementado una simulación de un servicio personalizado de Tele-asistencia. Esta prueba de concepto ha ayudado a reforzar el aprendizaje y entender con más precisión todo el conocimiento adquirido mediante el estudio teórico de una EDA. Se ha implementado en el lenguaje de programación Java, mediante las soluciones de código abierto RabbitMQ y Esper, ayudando a su unión el estándar AMQP, para completar correctamente la transferencia.
