Optical properties of intentionally disordered multiple quantum well (QW) system embedded in a wide AlGaAs parabolic well were investigated by photoluminescence (PL) measurements as functions of the laser excitation power and the temperature. The characterization of the carriers localized in the individual wells was allowed due to the artificial disorder that caused spectral separation of the photoluminescence lines emitted by different wells. We observed that the photoluminescence peak intensity from each quantum well shifted to high energy as the excitation power was increased. This blue-shift is associated with the filling of localized states in the valence band tail. We also found that the dependence of the peak intensity on the temperature is very sensitive to the excitation power. The temperature dependence of the photoluminescence peak energy from each QW was well fitted using a model that takes into account the thermal redistribution of the localized carriers. Our results demonstrate that the band tails in the studied structures are caused by alloy potential fluctuations and the band tail states dominate the emission from the peripheral wells. We consider the heat flux through a domain with subregions in which the thermal capacity approaches zero. In these subregions the parabolic heat equation degenerates to an elliptic one. We show the well-posedness of such parabolic-elliptic differential equations for general non-negative L-infinity-capacities and study the continuity of the solutions with respect to the capacity, thus giving a rigorous justification for modeling a small thermal capacity by setting it to zero. We also characterize weak directional derivatives of the temperature with respect to capacity as solutions of related parabolic-elliptic problems.

Assuming that the heat capacity of a body is negligible outside certain inclusions the heat equation degenerates to a parabolic-elliptic interface problem. In this work we aim to detect these interfaces from thermal measurements on the surface of the body. We deduce an equivalent variational formulation for the parabolic-elliptic problem and give a new proof of the unique solvability based on Lions’s projection lemma. For the case that the heat conductivity is higher inside the inclusions, we develop an adaptation of the factorization method to this time-dependent problem. In particular this shows that the locations of the interfaces are uniquely determined by boundary measurements. The method also yields to a numerical algorithm to recover the inclusions and thus the interfaces. We demonstrate how measurement data can be simulated numerically by a coupling of a finite element method with a boundary element method, and finally we present some numerical results for the inverse problem.

A uniform algebra A on its Shilov boundary X is maximal if A is not C(X) and no uniform algebra is strictly contained between A and C(X) . It is essentially pervasive if A is dense in C(F) whenever F is a proper closed subset of the essential set of A. If A is maximal, then it is essentially pervasive and proper. We explore the gap between these two concepts. We show: (1) If A is pervasive and proper, and has a nonconstant unimodular element, then A contains an infinite descending chain of pervasive subalgebras on X . (2) It is possible to find a compact Hausdorff space X such that there is an isomorphic copy of the lattice of all subsets of N in the family of pervasive subalgebras of C(X). (3) In the other direction, if A is strongly logmodular, proper and pervasive, then it is maximal. (4) This fails if the word “strongly” is removed. We discuss examples involving Dirichlet algebras, A(U) algebras, Douglas algebras, and subalgebras of H∞(D), and develop new results that relate pervasiveness, maximality, and relative maximality to support sets of representing measures.

The heterogeneous incoming heat flux in solar parabolic trough absorber tubes generates huge temperature difference in each pipe section. Helical internal fins can reduce this effect, homogenising the temperature profile and reducing thermal stress with the drawback of increasing pressure drop. Another effect is the decreasing of the outer surface temperature and thermal losses, improving the thermal efficiency of the collector. The application of internal finned tubes for the design of parabolic trough collectors is analysed with computational fluid dynamics tools. Our numerical approach has been qualified with the computational estimation of reported experimental data regarding phenomena involved in finned tube applications and solar irradiation of parabolic trough collector. The application of finned tubes to the design of parabolic trough collectors must take into account issues as the pressure losses, thermal losses and thermo-mechanical stress, and thermal fatigue. Our analysis shows an improvement potential in parabolic trough solar plants efficiency by the application of internal finned tubes.

An automatic Mesh Generation Preprocessor for BE Programs with a considerable of capabilities has been developed. This program allows almost any kind of geometry and tipology to be defined with a small amount of external data, and with an important approximation of the boundary geometry. Also the error checking possibility is very important for a fast comprobation of the results.

Flows of relevance to new generation aerospace vehicles exist, which are weakly dependent on the streamwise direction and strongly dependent on the other two spatial directions, such as the flow around the (flattened) nose of the vehicle and the associated elliptic cone model. Exploiting these characteristics, a parabolic integration of the Navier-Stokes equations is more appropriate than solution of the full equations, resulting in the so-called Parabolic Navier-Stokes (PNS). This approach not only is the best candidate, in terms of computational efficiency and accuracy, for the computation of steady base flows with the appointed properties, but also permits performing instability analysis and laminar-turbulent transition studies a-posteriori to the base flow computation. This is to be contrasted with the alternative approach of using order-of-magnitude more expensive spatial Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) for the description of the transition process. The PNS equations used here have been formulated for an arbitrary coordinate transformation and the spatial discretization is performed using a novel stable high-order finite-difference-based numerical scheme, ensuring the recovery of highly accurate solutions using modest computing resources. For verification purposes, the boundary layer solution around a circular cone at zero angle of attack is compared in the incompressible limit with theoretical profiles. Also, the recovered shock wave angle at supersonic conditions is compared with theoretical predictions in the same circular-base cone geometry. Finally, the entire flow field, including shock position and compressible boundary layer around a 2:1 elliptic cone is recovered at Mach numbers 3 and 4

We study a parabolic–elliptic chemotactic system describing the evolution of a population’s density “u” and a chemoattractant’s concentration “v”. The system considers a non-constant chemotactic sensitivity given by “χ(N−u)”, for N≥0, and a source term of logistic type “λu(1−u)”. The existence of global bounded classical solutions is proved for any χ>0, N≥0 and λ≥0. By using a comparison argument we analyze the stability of the constant steady state u=1, v=1, for a range of parameters. – For N>1 and Nλ>2χ, any positive and bounded solution converges to the steady state. – For N≤1 the steady state is locally asymptotically stable and for χN<λ, the steady state is globally asymptotically stable.

Parabolic reflectors, also known as parabolic troughs, are widely used in solar thermal power plants. This kind of power plants is usually located on desert climates, where the combined action of wind and dust can be of paramount importance. In some cases it becomes necessary to protect these devices from the joined wind and sand action, which is normally accomplished through solid windbreaks. In this paper the results of a wind tunnel test campaign, of a scale parabolic trough row having different windward windbreaks, are reported. The windbreaks herein considered consist of a solid wall with an upper porous fence. Different geometrical configurations, varying the solid wall height and the separation between the parabolic trough row and the windbreak have been considered. From the measured time series, both the mean and peak values of the aerodynamic loads were determined. As it would be expected, mean aerodynamic drag, as well as peak values, decrease as the distance between the windbreak and the parabolic increases, and after a threshold value, such drag loads increase with the distance.

Linear Fresnel collectors are identified as a technology that should play a main role in order to reduce cost of Concentrating Solar Power. An optical and thermal analysis of the different blocks of the solar power plant is carried out, where Fresnel arrays are compared with the most extended linear technology: parabolic trough collectors. It is demonstrated that the optical performance of Fresnel array is very close to that of PTC, with similar values of maximum flux intensities. In addition, if the heat carrier fluid flows in series by the tubes of the receiver, relatively high thermal efficiencies are achieved. Thus, an annual solar to electricity efficiency of 19% is expected, which is similar to the state of the art in PTCs; this is done with a reduction of costs, thanks to lighter structures, that drives to an estimation of LCOE of around 6.5 c€/kWh.

The equation ∂tu = u∂xx2u − (c − 1)(∂xu)2 is known in literature as a qualitative mathematical model of some biological phenomena. Here this equation is derived as a model of the groundwater flow in a water-absorbing fissurized porous rock; therefore, we refer to this equation as a filtration-absorption equation. A family of self-similar solutions to this equation is constructed. Numerical investigation of the evolution of non-self-similar solutions to the Cauchy problems having compactly supported initial conditions is performed. Numerical experiments indicate that the self-similar solutions obtained represent intermediate asymptotics of a wider class of solutions when the influence of details of the initial conditions disappears but the solution is still far from the ultimate state: identical zero. An open problem caused by the nonuniqueness of the solution of the Cauchy problem is discussed.
