Part A

A problem restricting the development of the CuCl laser has been the decrease in output power with increases of tube temperature above 400°C. At that temperature the CuCl vapor pressure is about .1 torr. This is a small fraction of the buffer gas pressure (He at 10 torr).

The aim of the project was to measure the peak radiation temperature (assumed related to the mean energy of electrons) in the laser discharge as a function of the tube temperature. A 24 gHz gated microwave radiometer was used.

It was found that at the tube temperatures at which the output power began to deteriorate, the electron radiation temperature showed a sharp increase (compared with radiation temperature in pure buffer).

Using the above result, we have postulated that this sudden increase is a result of Penning ionization of the Cu atoms. As a consequence of this process the number of Cu atoms available for lasing decrease.

PART B

The aim of the project was to study the dissociation of CO2 in the glow discharge of flowing CO2 lasers.

A TM011 microwave (3 gHz) cavity was used to measure the radially averaged electron density ne and the electron-neutral collision frequency in the laser discharge. An estimate of the electric field is made from these two measurements. A gas chromatograph was used to measure the chemical composition of the gases after going through the discharge. This instrument was checked against a mass spectrometer for accuracy and sensitivity.

Several typical laser mixtures were .used: CO2-N2-He (1,3,16), (1,3,0), (1,0,16), (1,2,10), (1,2,0), (1,0,10), (2,3,15), (2,3,0), (2,0,15), (1,3,16)+ H2O and pure CO2. Results show that for the conditions studied the dissociation as a function of the electron density is uniquely determined by the STP partial flow rate of CO2, regardless of the amount of N2 and/or He present. The presence of water vapor in the discharge decreased the degree of dissociation.

A simple theoretical model was developed using thermodynamic equilibrium. The electrons were replaced in the calculations by a distributed heat source.

The results are analyzed with a simple kinetic model.

Gamma-ray irradiation-induced color centers in Al2O3 crystals grown by temperature gradient techniques (TGT) under a strongly reducing atmosphere were studied. The transition F+ -> F takes place during the irradiation process. Glow discharge mass spectroscopy (GDMS) and annealing treatments show that Fe3+ impurity ions are present in the crystals. A composite (F+-Fe3+) defect was presented to explain the origin of the 255 nm band absorption in the TGT-Al2O3 crystals. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The cataphoretic purification of helium was investigated for binary mixtures of He with Ar, Ne, N2, O2, CO, and CO2 in DC glow discharge. An experimental technique was developed to continuously measure the composition in the anode end-bulb without sample withdrawal. Discharge currents ranged from 10 ma to 100 ma. Total gas pressure ranged from 2 torr to 9 torr. Initial compositions of the minority component in He ranged from 1.2 mole percent to 7.5 mole percent.

The cataphoretic separation of Ar and Ne from He was found to be in agreement with previous investigators. The cataphoretic separation of N2, O2, and CO from He was found to be similar to noble gas systems in that the steady-state separation improved with (1) increasing discharge current, (2) increasing gas pressure, and (3) decreasing initial composition of the minority component. In the He-CO2 mixture, the CO2 dissociated to CO plus O2. The fraction of CO2 dissociated was directly proportional to the current and pressure and independent of initial composition.

The experimental results for the separation of Ar, Ne, N2, O2, and CO from He were interpreted in the framework of a recently proposed theoretical model involving an electrostatic Peclet number. In the model the electric field was assumed to be constant. This assumption was checked experimentally and the maximum variation in electric field was 35% in time and 30% in position. Consequently, the assumption of constant electric field introduced no more than 55% variation in the electrostatic Peclet number during a separation.

To aid in the design of new cataphoretic systems, the following design criteria were developed and tested in detail: (1) electric field independent of discharge current, (2) electric field directly proportional to total pressure, (3) ion fraction of impurity directly proportional to discharge current, and (4) ion fraction of impurity independent of total pressure. Although these assumptions are approximate, they enabled the steady-state concentration profile to be predicted to within 25% for 75% of the data. The theoretical model was also tested with respect to the characteristic time associated with transient cataphoresis. Over 80% of the data was within a factor of two of the calculated characteristic times.

The electrostatic Peclet number ranged in value from 0.13 to 4.33. Back-calculated ion fractions of the impurity component ranged in value from 4.8x10-6 to 178x10-6.

Negative ion element impurities breakdown model in HfO2 thin film was reported in this paper. The content of negative ion elements were detected by glow discharge mass spectrum analysis (GDMS); HfO2 thin films were deposited by the electron-beam evaporation method. The weak absorption and laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of HfO2 thin films were measured to testify the negative ion element impurity breakdown model. It was found that the LIDT would decrease and the absorption would increase with increasing the content of negative ion element. These results indicated that negative ion elements were harmful impurities and would speed up the damage of thin film. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

建立了缺陷吸收升温致薄膜激光损伤模型,该模型从热传导方程出发,考虑了缺陷内部的温度分布以及向薄膜的传导过程,通过引入散射系数简化了Mie散射理论得出的吸收截面.对电子束蒸发沉积的ZrO2:Y2O3单层膜进行了激光破坏实验,薄膜样品的损伤是缺陷引起的,通过辉光放电质谱法对薄膜制备材料的纯度分析发现材料中的主要杂质元素为铂,其含量为0.9%.利用缺陷损伤模型对损伤过程进行了模拟,理论模型和实验结果取得了较好的一致性.

用辉光放电质谱法和二次离子质谱仪测定了两种HfO2材料及它们相应的单层膜中的杂质含量,结果发现,无论是在体材料中还是在用电子束蒸发技术沉积的材料单层薄膜中,ZrO2都是这两种HfO2材料中最主要的杂质。而且,这两种HfO2材料中Zr含量的差别远远大于Ti、Fe含量的差别,这说明Zr含量的差别正是引起两种HfO2膜层光学性能差别的原因。用这两种不同纯度的HfO2材料与同一纯度的SiO2材料组合,沉积形成266nm的紫外反射镜,实验结果表明这两种反射镜的反射率分别在99.85% 和 99.15%左右。这个结果与依据单层膜得出的光学常数所设计的结果符合的很好。

Influence of ZrO2 in HfO2 on the reflectance of HfO2/SiO2 multilayer at 248 nm was investigated. Two kinds of HfO2 with different ZrO2 content were chosen as high refractive index material and the same kind of SiO2 as low refractive index material to prepare the mirrors by electron-beam evaporation. The impurities in two kinds of HfO2 starting coating materials and in their corresponding single layer thin films were determined through glow discharge mass spectrum (GDMS) technology and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) equipment, respectively. It showed that between the two kinds of HfO2, either the bulk materials or their corresponding films, the difference of ZrO2 was much larger than that of the other impurities such as Ti and Fe. It is the Zr element that affects the property of thin films. Both in theoretical and in experimental, the mirror prepared with the HfO2 starting material containing more Zr content has a lower reflectance. Because the extinction coefficient of zirconia is relatively high in UV region, it can be treated as one kind of absorbing defects to influence the optical property of the mirrors. The effects of hydrogen passivation on multi-crystalline silicon (mc-Si) solar cells are reported in this paper. Hydrogen plasma was generated by means of ac glow discharge in a hydrogen atmosphere. Hydrogen passivation was carried out with three different groups of mc-Si solar cells after finishing contacts. The experimental results demonstrated that the photovoltaic performances of the solar cell samples have been improved after hydrogen plasma treatment, with a relative increase in conversion efficiency up to 10.6%. A calculation modelling has been performed to interpret the experimental results using the model for analysis of microelectronic and photonic structures developed at Pennsylvania State University.

Photoluminescence measurements have been performed in Si-rich a-SiNx:H (x less than or equal to 1.3) alloys prepared by glow discharge. It is observed that the blue shift of the peak of room temperature luminescence spectrum with increasing N content parallels increasing intensity. Two distinct luminescence mechanisms are proposed in a-SiNx:H with the threshold near x = 0.8. For low x, the samples show typical luminescence properties of a-Si:H, while for high x, the normalized luminescence bands are independent of temperature. Combining percolation theory, the luminescence origins are discussed on the basis of Brodsky's quantum well model. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The strong photoluminescence (PL) of SiOx:H prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition has been systematically studied in conjunction with infrared and micro-Raman spectra. We have found that each PL spectrum is comprised of two Gaussian components, a main band and a shoulder. The main band might originate from amorphous silicon clusters embedded in die SiOx network, and its redshift with annealing temperature is due to expansion of the silicon clusters. The shoulder remains at about 835 nm in spite of the annealing temperature and possibly comes from luminescent defect centers. The enhanced PL spectra after 1170 degrees C annealing are attributed to the quantum confinement effects of nanocrystalline silicon embedded in the SiO2 matrix. The free electron concentration of as-grown liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) InP measured by Hall effect is much higher than the concentration of net donor impurity determined by glow discharge mass spectroscopy. Evidence of the existence of a native donor hydrogen-indium vacancy complex in LEC undoped and Fe-doped InP materials can be observed with infrared absorption spectra. The concentration increase of the donor complex correlates with the increase of ionized deep acceptor iron impurity Fe~(2+) concentration in Fe-doped semi-insulating (SI) InP. These results indicate that the hydrogen-indium vacancy complex is an important donor defect in as-grown LEC InP, and that it has significant influence on the compensation in Fe-doped SI InP.

Undoped liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) InP samples have been studied by Hall effect, glow discharge mass spectroscopy (GDMS) and infrared absorption spectroscopy. A systematic discrepancy has been found between the Han electron concentration and net donor concentration measured by GDMS. The electron concentration is always higher than the net shallow donor concentration by about (3-6)x10(15)cm(-3). A hydrogen indium vacancy complex donor defect VInH4 was detected regularly by infrared absorption spectroscopy in all undoped LEC InP samples. The fact can be explained by taking into account the existence of the donor defect in as-grown undoped LEC-InP.

Device-quality a-Si:H films were prepared by glow discharge CVD with pure or H-diluted silane as well as by hot-wire CVD. The hydrogen content was varied from similar to 2 to 15 at. %. The Si-H bond absorption and its light-soaking-induced changes were studied by IR and differential IR absorption spectroscopes. The results indicate that the more stable sample exhibits an increase of the absorption at wave number similar to 2000 cm(-1), and the less stable one exhibits a decrease at similar to 2040 cm(-1) and an increase at similar to 1880 cm(-1).

In this paper, hydrophilic microporous cellulose nitrate membranes have been surface-modified by plasma polymerization of octafluorocyclobutane (OFCB). The microporous composite membranes with a hydrophilic layer sandwiched between two hydrophobic layers have been obtained. The obtained composite membranes have been used in a membrane distillation (MD) process and have exhibited good performance. The effects of polymerization conditions, such as glow-discharge power and deposition time, on the structures and MD performances of the obtained composite membranes have been investigated by SEM, X-ray microscopical analysis, and XPS. The polymerization conditions should be as mild as possible in order to prepare the hydrophobic composite membrane with good MD performance. The typical MD behaviors of the obtained hydrophobic composite membranes are in agreement with that of hydrophobic membranes directly prepared from hydrophobic polymeric materials, like PVDF, PTFE, or PP.

Na+ ions have a detrimental effect on the photocatalytic activity of thin sot gel films deposited on soda lime glass due to their diffusion into the film during the calcination process. Given that the content of sodium in glass substrate might be the crucial parameter in determining the activity of a photocatalyst, the aim of the present work was the comparison of the photoinduced properties of a thin TiO2 film prepared on three different glass substrates namely on quartz (Q) glass, borosilicate (BS) glass and soda lime (SL) glass which have different sodium content. The prepared layers were characterised by X-ray diffraction and UV-vis spectroscopy. The diffusion of Na+ from the substrate into the layers was determined by Glow Discharge Atomic Emission Spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of the films were assessed using two model pollutant test systems (resazurin/resorufin ink and stearic acid film), which appeared to correlate reasonably well. It was observed that TiO2 layer on SL glass has a brookite crystalline structure while the TiO2 layer on BS and Q glass has an anatase crystalline structure. On the other hand, the photodegradation of the model dye on TiO2 films deposited on Q and BS glass is about an order higher than on SL glass. The low sodium content of BS glass makes it the most suitable substrate for the deposition of photoactive sol gel TiO2 films. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
