We evaluate the one-loop vacuum polarization tensor for three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED), using an analytic regularization technique, implemented in a gauge-invariant way. We show thus that a gauge boson mass is generated at this level of radiative correction to the photon propagator. We also point out in our conclusions that the generalization for the non Abelian case is straightforward.

Group theoretical-based techniques and fundamental results from number theory are used in order to allow for the construction of exact projectors in finite-dimensional spaces. These operators are shown to make use only of discrete variables, which play the role of discrete generator coordinates, and their application in the number symmetry restoration is carried out in a nuclear BCS wave function which explicitly violates that symmetry. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. In this paper, we present a measure of quantum correlation for a multipartite system, defined as the sum of the correlations for all possible partitions. Our measure can be defined for quantum discord (QD), geometric quantum discord or even for entanglement of formation (EOF). For tripartite pure states, we show that the multipartite measures for the QD and the EOF are equivalent, which allows direct comparison of the distribution and the robustness of these correlations in open quantum systems. We study dissipative dynamics for two distinct families of entanglement: a W state and a GHZ state. We show that, for the W state, the QD is more robust than the entanglement, while for the GHZ state, this is not true. It turns out that the initial genuine multipartite entanglement present in the GHZ state makes the EOF more robust than the QD. © IOP Publishing and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

It is shown that the correct mathematical implementation of symmetry in the geometric formulation of classical field theory leads naturally beyond the concept of Lie groups and their actions on manifolds, out into the realm of Lie group bundles and, more generally, of Lie groupoids and their actions on fiber bundles. This applies not only to local symmetries, which lie at the heart of gauge theories, but is already true even for global symmetries when one allows for fields that are sections of bundles with (possibly) non-trivial topology or, even when these are topologically trivial, in the absence of a preferred trivialization. In the paper, a complete description of the delta-derivations and the delta-superderivations of semisimple finite-dimensional Jordan superalgebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p not equal 2 is given. In particular, new examples of nontrivial (1/2)-derivations and odd (1/2)-superderivations are given that are not operators of right multiplication by an element of the superalgebra.

We study particle current in a recently proposed model for coherent quantum transport. In this model, a system connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs (meso-reservoir) is driven out of equilibrium by the action of super-reservoirs thermalized to prescribed temperatures and chemical potentials by a simple dissipative mechanism described by the Lindblad equation. We compare exact (numerical) results with theoretical expectations based on the Landauer formula.

For quantum systems with linear dynamics in phase space much of classical feedback control theory applies. However, there are some questions that are sensible only for the quantum case: Given a fixed interaction between the system and the environment what is the optimal measurement on the environment for a particular control problem? We show that for a broad class of optimal (state- based) control problems ( the stationary linear-quadratic-Gaussian class), this question is a semidefinite program. Moreover, the answer also applies to Markovian (current-based) feedback.

The problem of regression under Gaussian assumptions is treated generally. The relationship between Bayesian prediction, regularization and smoothing is elucidated. The ideal regression is the posterior mean and its computation scales as O(n3), where n is the sample size. We show that the optimal m-dimensional linear model under a given prior is spanned by the first m eigenfunctions of a covariance operator, which is a trace-class operator. This is an infinite dimensional analogue of principal component analysis. The importance of Hilbert space methods to practical statistics is also discussed.

An embedding X ⊂ G of a topological space X into a topological group G is called functorial if every homeomorphism of X extends to a continuous group homomorphism of G. It is shown that the interval [0, 1] admits no functorial embedding into a finite-dimensional or metrizable topological group.

We are concerned with two-level optimization problems called strongweak Stackelberg problems, generalizing the class of Stackelberg problems in the strong and weak sense. In order to handle the fact that the considered two-level optimization problems may fail to have a solution under mild assumptions, we consider a regularization involving ε-approximate optimal solutions in the lower level problems. We prove the existence of optimal solutions for such regularized problems and present some approximation results when the parameter ǫ goes to zero. Finally, as an example, we consider an optimization problem associated to a best bound given in [2] for a system of nondifferentiable convex inequalities.
