Systolic two-port adaptor for high performance wave digital filtering

The authors present a VLSI circuit for implementing wave digital filter (WDF) two-port adaptors. Considerable speedups over conventional designs have been obtained using fine grained pipelining. This has been achieved through the use of most significant bit (MSB) first carry-save arithmetic, which allows systems to be designed in which latency L is small and independent of either coefficient or input data wordlength. L is determined by the online delay associated with the computation required at each node in the circuit (in this case a multiply/add plus two separate additions). This in turn means that pipelining can be used to considerably enhance the sampling rate of a recursive digital filter. The level of pipelining which will offer enhancement is determined by L and is fine-grained rather than bit level. In the case of the circuit considered, L = 3. For this reason pipeline delays (half latches) have been introduced between every two rows of cells to produce a system with a once every cycle sample rate.

A high performance IIR digital filter chip

The design of a high-performance IIR (infinite impulse response) digital filter is described. The chip architecture operates on 11-b parallel, two's complement input data with a 12-b parallel two's complement coefficient to produce a 14-b two's complement output. The chip is implemented in 1.5-µm, double-layer-metal CMOS technology, consumes 0.5 W, and can operate up to 15 Msample/s. The main component of the system is a fine-grained systolic array that internally is based on a signed binary number representation (SBNR). Issues addressed include testing, clock distribution, and circuitry for conversion between two's complement and SBNR.

Comparative study of human erythrocytes by digital holographic microscopy, confocal microscopy, and impedance volume analyzer.

Red blood cell (RBC) parameters such as morphology, volume, refractive index, and hemoglobin content are of great importance for diagnostic purposes. Existing approaches require complicated calibration procedures and robust cell perturbation. As a result, reference values for normal RBC differ depending on the method used. We present a way for measuring parameters of intact individual RBCs by using digital holographic microscopy (DHM), a new interferometric and label-free technique with nanometric axial sensitivity. The results are compared with values achieved by conventional techniques for RBC of the same donor and previously published figures. A DHM equipped with a laser diode (lambda = 663 nm) was used to record holograms in an off-axis geometry. Measurements of both RBC refractive indices and volumes were achieved via monitoring the quantitative phase map of RBC by means of a sequential perfusion of two isotonic solutions with different refractive indices obtained by the use of Nycodenz (decoupling procedure). Volume of RBCs labeled by membrane dye Dil was analyzed by confocal microscopy. The mean cell volume (MCV), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), and mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were also measured with an impedance volume analyzer. DHM yielded RBC refractive index n = 1.418 +/- 0.012, volume 83 +/- 14 fl, MCH = 29.9 pg, and MCHC 362 +/- 40 g/l. Erythrocyte MCV, MCH, and MCHC achieved by an impedance volume analyzer were 82 fl, 28.6 pg, and 349 g/l, respectively. Confocal microscopy yielded 91 +/- 17 fl for RBC volume. In conclusion, DHM in combination with a decoupling procedure allows measuring noninvasively volume, refractive index, and hemoglobin content of single-living RBCs with a high accuracy.

Use of digital camera to assess nitrogen status of winter wheat in the Northern China Plain

The most widely used methods to assess the nitrogen (N) status of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) are the determination of plant total N by combustion, the testing of nitrate in the leaf tissue and the use of SPAD readings. However, due to their labor requirements or high costs these methods can hardly be applied to the huge wheat growing areas of the Northern China Plain. This study therefore examined an alternative method to measure the N status of wheat by using a digital camera to record the visible green light reflected from the plant canopy. The experiment was conducted near Beijing in a multi-factorial field trial with three levels of N. The intensity of green light reflected from the wheat canopy was compared to the total N concentration, to the nitrate concentration of the basal stem, and to the SPAD readings of leaves. The results show significant inverse relationships between greenness intensity, canopy total N, and SPAD readings at booting and flowering. At booting, sap nitrate <2000mgL^-1 was inversely related to greenness intensity and to sap nitrate concentration in the basal stem. At sap nitrate ~2000mgL^-1, the greenness intensity reached a plateau. At booting and flowering, significant inverse relationships between greenness intensity and shoot biomass were found. The results show the potential of the new method to assess the N status of winter wheat.

Rockin' Muffin es una nueva pequeña empresa dedicada a la producción y venta de muffins de diferentes sabores que nace con el propósito de cubrir la alta demanda de productos de este tipo en la ciudad de Bogotá. Específicamente el mercado de la repostería y la pastelería en el país ha tomado un fuerte impulso a raíz del auge de la gastronomía gourmet especializada y la globalización, principalmente mediática, que este vive desde hace varios años. Continuamente surgen nuevos productos y nuevas tendencias de moda alimenticia que buscan mantener un constante crecimiento del sector adoptando estilos vanguardistas. Es ahí donde se abren cabida los muffins apareciendo en el mercado colombiano y posicionándose como uno de los acompañantes predilectos, sides, o postres para diferentes ocasiones. Este proyecto pretende, en su objetivo general, definir el segmento de mercado de Rockin’ Muffin, e implementar sólidas estrategias digitales y promocionales con el propósito de incrementar la venta de sus productos y sus resultados comerciales.

Due to the edition of the new Atles comarcal de Catalunya by the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya in digital format, we look at the structure of their contents and the dynamics of its use. Likewise, it is detailed which methodology was utilized to perform it. Finally, some reflections on the innovations that this new product entails in textual and cartographic areas are proposed, especially related to the current socioeconomic context and new employed technologies

The accuracy of digital elevation models derived from digitised contour data

Although accuracy of digital elevation models (DEMs) can be quantified and measured in different ways, each is influenced by three main factors: terrain character, sampling strategy and interpolation method. These parameters, and their interaction, are discussed. The generation of DEMs from digitised contours is emphasised because this is the major source of DEMs, particularly within member countries of OEEPE. Such DEMs often exhibit unwelcome artifacts, depending on the interpolation method employed. The origin and magnitude of these effects and how they can be reduced to improve the accuracy of the DEMs are also discussed.

Partial identification of spirochaetes from two dairy cows with digital dermatitis by polymerase chain reaction analysis of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene

Specimens taken postmortem from typical lesions of digital dermatitis in two dairy cows were tested by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of a spirochaetal 16S rRNA gene. Seven different assays detected the gene in the samples from both cows. Two of the PCR products were sequenced and a comparison of the nucleotide sequences revealed that the spirochaete belonged to the genus Treponema and was closely related to Treponema denticola. A PCR specific for the detection of the digital dermatitis-associated treponeme was developed.

Digital image correlation analysis of the load transfer by implant-supported restorations

This study compared splinted and non-splinted implant-supported prosthesis with and without a distal proximal contact using a digital image correlation method. An epoxy resin model was made with acrylic resin replicas of a mandibular first premolar and second molar and with threaded implants replacing the second premolar and first molar. Splinted and non-splinted metal-ceramic screw-retained crowns were fabricated and loaded with and without the presence of the second molar. A single-camera measuring system was used to record the in-plane deformation on the model surface at a frequency of 1.0 Hz under a load from 0 to 250 N. The images were then analyzed with specialist software to determine the direct (horizontal) and shear strains along the model. Not splinting the crowns resulted in higher stress transfer to the supporting implants when the second molar replica was absent. The presence of a second molar and an effective interproximal contact contributed to lower stress transfer to the supporting structures even for non-splinted restorations. Shear strains were higher in the region between the molars when the second molar was absent, regardless of splinting. The opposite was found for the region between the implants, which had higher shear strain values when the second molar was present. When an effective distal contact is absent, non-splinted implant-supported restorations introduce higher direct strains to the supporting structures under loading. Shear strains appear to be dependent also on the region within the model, with different regions showing different trends in strain changes in the absence of an effective distal contact.
