Reliable estimates of forest productivity are essential for improved predictions of timber yields for the private native spotted gum resource in southern Qld and northern NSW. The aim of this research was to estimate the potential productivity of native spotted gum forests on private land by making use of available inventory data collated from Qld and northern NSW for spotted gum forest on Crown land (i.e. state forests). We measured a range of site-related factors to determine their relative importance in predicting productivity of spotted gum forest. While measures such as stand height and height-diameter relationships are known to be useful predictors of productivity, we aimed to determine productivity for a site where this information was not available. Through estimation of stand growth rates we developed a spotted gum productivity assessment tool (SPAT) for use by landholders and extension officers. We aimed to develop a tool to allow private landholders to see the benefits of maintaining their timber resource. This paper summarises the information used to develop the SPAT with a particular focus on forest growth relationships.

A wide range of biotic and abiotic factors, operating over different time perspectives and intensities, cause defoliation and a rapid decrease in the crown size of trees. Scleroderris canker disease [Gremmeniella abietina (Lagerb.) Morelet] has caused widespread crown reduction and tree mortality in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L) in forests in Scandinavia during the last three decades. In the 1980's, attempts were made to show, on the basis of the higher foliar N and S concentrations of affected pines in the diseased area, that sulphur and nitrogen deposition predispose trees to G. abietina. Unfortunately, in many studies on defoliated trees, exceptionally high or low needle mineral nutrient concentrations are still often interpreted as one of the causes of tree injury and not, conversely, as the result. In this thesis, three different field experiments, with foliar analysis as the main study method, were conducted in order to asses the possible long-term effects of living crown reduction on the needle nutrient concentrations of Scots pine trees in southern Finland. The crown ratio and length of the living crown were used to estimate the amount of defoliation in the reduced canopies. The material for the partial studies was collected and a total of 968 foliar samples were analysed individually (15-17 elements/sample) on a total of 488 sample trees (140 diseased, 116 pruned and 232 control trees) during the years 1987-1996 in 13 Scots pine stands. All the three experiments of this thesis provided significant evidence that severe, disease-induced defoliation or artificial pruning of the living branches can induce long-lasting nutritional changes in the foliage of the recovering trees under the typical growing conditions for Scots pine. The foliar concentrations of all the 17 mineral nutrients/elements analysed were affected, to a varying degree, by artificial pruning during the following three years. Although Scots pine, as an evergreen conifer, is considered to have low induced chemical responses to defoliation, this study proved experimentally under natural forest conditions that severe artificial pruning or disease-induced defoliation of Scots pine trees may induce biologically significant changes in the concentrations of most of the important macro- and micronutrients, as well as of carbon, in refoliated needles. Concerning the studies in this thesis, I find the results significant in providing new information about the long-term effects of rapid living crown reduction on the foliar nutrient and element status of Scots pine trees. The crown ethers, 2,3-benzo-1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-cyclopentadeca-2-ene and 2,3, ll,12-dibenzo-l,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxscyclooctadeca-2,11-diene are incorporated into H,N'-ethylenebis(acetylacetoneimino) nickel(II) and copper(II), phenol, and β-naphthol by diazo coupling reactions. The selective nature of the coupling reaction has-been demonstrated by the isolation of both asymmetric mono- and symmetric bis(glyoxalarylcrownhydrazoneimino) metal(II) complexes. An interesting binuclear complex containing two intramolecularly rearranged (glyoxal-hydrazonearylimino) metal(II) groups joined by 18-crown-6 result8 when bis(arenediazonium)-18-crown-6 is coupled with the metal(I1) Schiff bases. The substituted ethers form cationic salts with NaClO4, KCNS, NH4CNS, 14g(CNS)2 and Ca(CNS)2. All the synthesised ethers exhibit ion selectivity sequence as K+ > Na+ and Ca2+ > Mg2+.

Porphyrins appended with crown ether, benzo-15-crown-5, at the methine positions have been synthesized and characterized. The fully and partially substituted porphyrins and their metallo (Co, Cu, and Zn) derivatives describe one or more ether cavities in the periphery that are capable of recognizing spherical cations. The ability of these macrocycles to complex cations (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2', and NH4+) is investigated by use of visible, 'H NMR, ESR, and emission spectral studies. The tetrasubstituted crown porphyrin (TCP) exhibits very high selectivity for K+. The cations (K', Ba2+, and NH4+) that require two crown ether cavities for complexation promote dimerization of the porphyrins. The ESR study of the cation-induced porphyrin dimers reveals axial symmetry with the porphyrin planes separated by -4.2 A. This distance increases from the fully substituted to partially substituted porphyrins. The cations (K', Ba2+, and NH4') quench efficiently the fluorescence of the free base porphyrins and their metallo derivatives. The quenching process is attributed to the steric geometry of the dimers.

Key message: QTLidentified for seedling and adult plant crown rot resistance in four partially resistant hexaploid wheat sources. PCR-based markers identified for use in marker-assisted selection. Abstract: Crown rot, caused by Fusarium pseudograminearum, is an important disease of wheat in many wheat-growing regions globally. Complete resistance to infection by F. pseudograminearum has not been observed in a wheat host, but germplasm with partial resistance to this pathogen has been identified. The partially resistant wheat hexaploid germplasm sources 2-49, Sunco, IRN497 and CPI133817 were investigated in both seedling and adult plant field trials to identify markers associated with the resistance which could be used in marker-assisted selection programs. Thirteen different quantitative trait loci (QTL) conditioning crown rot resistance were identified in the four different sources. Some QTL were only observed in seedling trials whereas others appeared to be adult plant specific. For example while the QTL on chromosomes 1AS, 1BS, and 4BS contributed by 2-49 and on 2BS contributed by Sunco were detected in both seedling and field trials, the QTL on 1DL present in 2-49 and the QTL on 3BL in IRN497 were only detected in seedling trials. Genetic correlations between field trials of the same population were strong, as were correlations between seedling trials of the same population. Low to moderate correlations were observed between seedling and field trials. Flanking markers, most of which are less than 10 cM apart, have now been identified for each of the regions associated with crown rot resistance.

Porphyrins appended with crown ether moieties function as efficient uncouplesrs of oxidative phorphorylation in rat liver mitochondria. Permeation of these highly organized porphyrins decrease the respiratory coefficient index (RCI) values. Lowering of the RCI values parallels the number of K+ chelating crown ether groups attached to the porphyrins. The inhibitory effect upon the oxidative phorphorylation reaction depends on the nature of divalent metal ions, VO, Co, Cu and Zn in the porphyrin cavity and related to their relative tendency to complex intracellular K+ ions.

The interaction of benzo-15-crown-5, dibenzo-18-crown-6 and dibenzo-24-crown-8 with 2-dicyanoethylene 1,3-indane dione in CH2Cl2 has been described in terms of the formation of 1 : 1 molecular complexes. The magnitude of association constants and thermodynamic parameters indicate cooperative interactions of oxygens with the acceptors. The 1H and 13C NMR spectra of the complexes show that gyama-gyama interactions are a major source of ground state stabilization in these complexes.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes [VO(sal-argH)(B)] Cl (1-3) and [VO(sal-lysH)(B)] Cl (4-6), where sal-argH2 and sal-lysH(2) are N-salicylidene-L-arginine and N-salicylidene-L-lysine Schiff bases and B is a phenanthroline base, viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1 and 4); dipyrido[3,2-d: 2', 3'-f] quinoxaline (dpq in 2 and 5) and dipyrido[3,2-a: 2', 3'-c] phenazine (dppz in 3 and 6), have been prepared, characterized and their DNA photocleavage activity studied. Complex 1, characterized by X-ray crystallography, shows the presence of a vanadyl group in VIVO3N3 coordination geometry with a tridentate Schiff base having a pendant guanidinium moiety and bidentate phen ligand. The complexes exhibit a d-d band at similar to 715 nm in 20% DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes are redox active showing cathodic and anodic responses near -1.0 V and 0.85 V (vs. SCE) for the V(IV)-V(III) and V(V)-V(IV) couples, respectively, in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes bind to calf thymus DNA giving Kb values in the range of 3.8 x 10(4) to 1.6 x 10(5) M-1. Thermal denaturation and viscosity data suggest DNA groove binding nature of the complexes. The complexes do not show any `chemical nuclease'' activity in dark in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid or H2O2. The dpq and dppz complexes are efficient photocleavers of plasmid DNA in UV-A (365 nm) and red light (676 nm) via singlet oxygen pathway. The dppz complexes exhibit photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells giving IC50 values of 15.4 mu M for 3 and 17.5 mu M for 6 in visible light while being non-toxic in dark giving IC50 values of > 100 mu M.

The interaction of five crown ethers, 15-crown-5, 18-crown-6, benzo-15-crown-5, dibenzo-l8-crown-6, and dibenzo-24-crown-8 with 2, 3, 5, 6 - tetracyano pyrazine has been studied by spectroscopic methods. The association constants and thermodynamic parameters of the 1:1 complexes formed by donor ethers with the acceptor have been evaluated. There is an indication that oxygens of the ethers and aryl part of the ether act cooperatively in binding of the acceptor.
