Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) were deposited on single layer graphene (SLG) and few layers graphene (FLG) by applying the gas aggregation technique, previously adapted to a 4-gun commercial magnetron sputtering system. The samples were supported on SiO2 (280 nm)/Si substrates, and the influence of the applied DC power and deposition times on the nanoparticle-graphene system was investigated by Confocal Raman Microscopy. Analysis of the G and 2D bands of the Raman spectra shows that the integrated intensity ratio (I-2D/I-G) was higher for SLG than for FLG. For the samples produced using a sputtering power of 30W, the intensity (peak height) of the G and 2D bands increased with the deposition time, whereas for those produced applying 60W the peak heights of the G and 2D bands decreased with the deposition time. This behaviour was ascribed to the formation of larger Au-NPs aggregates in the last case. A significant increase of the Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) of the G band for SLG and FLG was also observed as a function of the DC power and deposition time. Surprisingly, the fine details of the Raman spectra revealed an unintentional doping of SLG and FLG accompanying the increase of size and aggregation of the Au-NPs. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. To study the consumption of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by bacteria living in untra-oligotrophic artificial or natural seawater, we analyzed the composition of DOM before (timepoint t0, directly after inoculation) and after (timepoint t2, 3 weeks of incubation) growth of the bacteria using Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR-MS). The oligotrophic natural seawater used originates from the South Pacific Gyre. Our data show that the bacteria were able to utilize a variety of different organic compounds. These compounds belong to different chemical compound groups and likely fuel the bacterial energy, carbon and nitrogen requirements under the ultra-oligotrophic conditions.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the oceans constitutes a major carbon pool involved in global biogeochemical cycles. More than 96% of the marine DOM resists microbial degradation for thousands of years. The composition of this refractory DOM (RDOM) exhibits a molecular signature which is ubiquitously detected in the deep oceans. Surprisingly efficient microbial transformation of labile into RDOM was shown experimentally, implying that microorganisms produce far more RDOM than needed to sustain the global pool. By assessing the microbial formation and transformation of DOM in unprecedented molecular detail for 3 years, we show that most of the newly formed RDOM is molecularly different from deep sea RDOM. Only <0.4% of the net community production was channeled into RDOM molecularly undistinguishable from deep sea DOM. Our study provides novel experimentally derived molecular evidence and data for global models on the production, turnover and accumulation of marine DOM.

Thermokarst lakes in the Siberian Arctic contain sediment archives that can be used for paleoenvironmental inference. Until now, however, there has been no study from the inner Lena River Delta with a focus on diatoms. The objective of this study was to investigate how the diatom community in a thermokarst lake responded to past limnogeological changes and what specific factors drove variations in the diatom assemblage. We analysed fossil diatom species, organic content, grain-size distribution and elemental composition in a sediment core retrieved in 2009 from a shallow thermokarst lake in the Arga Complex, western Lena River Delta. The core contains a 3,000-year record of sediment accumulation. Shifts in the predominantly benthic and epiphytic diatom species composition parallel changes in sediment characteristics. Paleoenvironmental and limnogeological development, inferred from multiple biological and sedimentological variables, are discussed in the context of four diatom zones, and indicate a strong relation between changes in the diatom assemblage and thermokarst processes. We conclude that limnogeological and thermokarst processes such as lake drainage, rather than direct climate forcing, were the main factors that altered the aquatic ecosystem by influencing, for example, habitat availability, hydrochemistry, and water level.

Whether intrinsic molecular properties or extrinsic factors such as environmental conditions control the decomposition of natural organic matter across soil, marine and freshwater systems has been subject to debate. Comprehensive evaluations of the controls that molecular structure exerts on organic matter's persistence in the environment have been precluded by organic matter's extreme complexity. Here we examine dissolved organic matter from 109 Swedish lakes using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry and optical spectroscopy to investigate the constraints on its persistence in the environment. We find that degradation processes preferentially remove oxidized, aromatic compounds, whereas reduced, aliphatic and N-containing compounds are either resistant to degradation or tightly cycled and thus persist in aquatic systems. The patterns we observe for individual molecules are consistent with our measurements of emergent bulk characteristics of organic matter at wide geographic and temporal scales, as reflected by optical properties. We conclude that intrinsic molecular properties are an important control of overall organic matter reactivity.

Marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) represents one of the largest active carbon reservoirs on Earth. Changes in pool size or composition could have major impacts on the global carbon cycle. Ocean acidification is a potential driver for these changes because it influences marine primary production and heterotrophic respiration. Here we show that ocean acidification as expected for a 'business-as-usual' emission scenario in the year 2100 (900 µatm) does not affect the DOM pool with respect to its size and molecular composition. We applied ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry to monitor the production and turnover of 7,360 distinct molecular DOM features in an unprecedented long-term mesocosm study in a Swedish Fjord, covering a full cycle of marine production. DOM concentration and molecular composition did not differ significantly between present-day and year 2100 CO2 levels. Our findings are likely applicable to other coastal and productive marine ecosystems in general.

The relationships between thermokarst activity, limnogeological processes and climate change in the Siberian Arctic are not well understood. The objective of this paper is to identify the factors controlling the patterns of deposition, using grain size distribution, organic content, elemental composition and mineralogical composition of a 137-cm long sediment core with a maximum age of ~10.9 cal. kyr BP from Lake El'gene-Kyuele in the tundra of northeastern Siberia. Eight fine sand layers are attributed to depositional events associated with thaw slump activity acting upon orthogonally oriented patterns of ice-wedge networks in the ice-rich permafrost on the NW margin of the lake catchment. Sr/Rb ratios, which correspond to the total feldspar and illite content, serve as high-resolution grain size proxies. The Br content relates to the total organic carbon content, and the Fe/Mn ratio reflects the degree of oxidisation. Our results indicate a relationship between repeated phases of fine sand input and retrogressive thaw slumping dependent on hydroclimate variability and orthogonally oriented ice-wedge networks within the catchment.

Thirty-five samples from Hole 778A were prepared for X-ray diffraction (XRD) mineralogical analyses and for chemical analyses of major and trace elements. Most of the selected samples were silt- and sand-sized sedimentary serpentinites or microbreccias except for a soft clast of mafic rock, a hard clast of massive serpentinized peridotite, and a pebble of consolidated, undeformed serpentine microbreccia that contained planktonic foraminifers. Both mineralogical and geochemical analyses allow discrimination of three groups among the analyzed samples. These groups correspond to three stratigraphic intervals present along the drilled section. Group A contains the upper samples (lithologic Unit I). These consist of poorly consolidated serpentine muds carrying hard-rock clasts (serpentinized peridotites, metabasalts). They are characterized by the following mineralogical assemblage: serpentine, Fe-oxides and hydroxides, aragonite, and halite. They exhibit variable SiO2, MgO contents, but are characterized by a SiO2/MgO ratio near 1. CaO content is high in relation to development of aragonite. Al2O3 content is low. Relatively high K2O, Na2O, and Sr contents are present, presumably in relation to interactions with seawater. Group B (30-77 mbsf) contains samples exhibiting very homogeneous chemical and mineralogical compositions. They consist of serpentinite microbreccias exhibiting frequent shear structures. Hard-rock clasts are also present (serpentinized peridotites, metabasalts, one possible chert fragment). The mineralogy of the Group B samples is characterized by the presence of serpentine and authigenic minerals: hydroxycarbonates and hydrogrossular. Calcite and chlorite are also present, but all the samples lack aragonite. Their chemical compositions are remarkably similar to compositions of their parent rocks. Group C contains silt- and sand-sized serpentine and serpentine microbreccias, which are locally rich in red clasts, probably strongly altered (oxidized?) mafic fragments. Intervals having clasts of more diverse origin than those higher in the section were recovered. Clast lithology includes serpentinized peridotites, metabasalts, metavolcaniclastite, meta-olivine gabbro, and amphibolite sandstone. Mineralogy and geochemistry reflect these compositions. Serpentine content of the samples is less than in previous groups. Correlatively, sepiolite, palygorskite, and chlorite-smectite are mineral phases present in the analyzed samples. Accessory igneous minerals (amphiboles, pyroxenes, hematite) also were found. The chemical compositions of most of Group C samples differ from that of massive serpentinized peridotites. The main differences are (1) higher SiO2, CaO, TiO2 and Al2O3 contents, (2) a SiO2/MgO ratio greater than 1, and (3) a negative correlation between Al2O3, and MgO, Cr, and Ni. These characteristics suggest new constraints relative to the flow structure of the flank of Conical Seamount.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the main substrate and energy source for heterotrophic bacterioplankton. To understand the interactions between DOM and the bacterial community (BC), it is important to identify the key factors on both sides in detail, chemically distinct moieties in DOM and the various bacterial taxa. Next-generation sequencing facilitates the classification of millions of reads of environmental DNA and RNA amplicons and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry yields up to 10,000 DOM molecular formulae in a marine water sample. Linking this detailed biological and chemical information is a crucial first step toward a mechanistic understanding of the role of microorganisms in the marine carbon cycle. In this study, we interpreted the complex microbiological and molecular information via a novel combination of multivariate statistics. We were able to reveal distinct relationships between the key factors of organic matter cycling along a latitudinal transect across the North Sea. Total BC and DOM composition were mainly driven by mixing of distinct water masses and presumably retain their respective terrigenous imprint on similar timescales on their way through the North Sea. The active microbial community, however, was rather influenced by local events and correlated with specific DOM molecular formulae indicative of compounds that are easily degradable. These trends were most pronounced on the highest resolved level, that is, operationally defined 'species', reflecting the functional diversity of microorganisms at high taxonomic resolution.
