The effect of phosphorus levels on seedling growth, dry and fresh matter production, and in vivo acid phosphatase activity was studied in Lychnophora ericoides cultivated during 130 days after transplanting in a greenhouse. Experimental design was completely randomized, with four P 2O 5 levels (0; 40; 80; 160 mg dm -3 as triple superphosphate) and five replicates of four plants each. The used soil was dystrophic acid dark red latosol. Lychnophora ericoides is responsive to phosphate fertilization with modification in daily relative growth rate, dry matter production and distribution among the plant parts. Acid phosphatase activity had significant and negative correlation with total, leaf and stem dry matter production, as well as with P levels accumulated in the leaf tissue. On the other hand, acid phosphatase activity had significant and positive correlation with root/shoot ratio.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the serum biochemical parameters of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), Thai Chitralada lineage, raised under an intensive pisciculture system and captured by the cast net technique. Blood samples from 40 individuals were obtained by caudal venopuncture. Mean body weight was 453 ± 52 g. The serum biochemical parameters evaluated were total protein, albumin, globulins, acid uric, creatinine, urea, calcium, inorganic phosphorus, Ca/P ratio, alkaline phosphatase, and magnesium. In general, the data showed similar parameters in comparison to those established for scale fish, exception of the acid uric.

This study evaluated the effect of different concentrations of sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) with and without fluoride (F) on the concentration of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P) and F in hydroxyapatite (HA). Synthetic HA powder (0.15 g) was suspended (n=6) in solutions (75 mL) of TMP at 0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, 1.0%, 2.0%, 4.0%, 6.0%, 8.0% and 10% concentrations in the presence and absence of 100 ppm F and subjected to a pH-cycling process. The precipitates were filtrated, dried at 70° C for 24 h and ground onto a fine powder. The concentrations of F (KOH (CaF2) and HCl (FA) soluble), Ca (Arsenazo III), and P (molybdate method) in HA were determined. The Ca P, and Ca/P ratio data were subjected to Tukey's test and the F data were subjected to Student-Newman-Keuls test (p<0.05). The addition of TMP to the samples reduced F deposition to 98% (p<0.001). The groups containing 100 ppm F and 0.4% or 0.6% TMP exhibited a higher Ca concentration than the group containing only 100 ppm F (p<0.05). Furthermore, the HA treated with 0.2% and 0.4% TMP and 100 ppm F showed a higher Ca/P ratio than the other groups (p<0.001). In conclusion, TMP at 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% concentrations combined with F seemed to be able to precipitate HA with low solubility. However, especially at high concentrations, TMP interferes with F deposition on HA.

This work was designed to evaluate the effect of storage forms and conditions upon the enzyme activity of phytase and bioavaibility of calcium and phosphorus in broiler diets. The work was accomplished in two steps. The first step, made in the laboratory measured the activity of the phytase enzyme along the storage period. In this step, two experiments were performed: Experiment 1, constituted of 5 treatments (pure phytase stored at 0 °C, 4 °C and environmental temperature and mixed to vitamin and mineral supplement, stored at environmental temperature) in CRD and split plot scheme. The activities were evaluated every 14 days for 112 days of storage, being verified that the phytase storage in the pure form at 0o C was superior to the other treatments. Experiment 2, made up of 4 treatments (phytase mixed to the ration directly, directly and afterwards pelleted, via mineral supplement and via vitamin supplement),all the treatments being stored at environmental temperature, in CRD and split plot scheme. The activities were evaluated every 7 days for 56 days' storage, being verified that the storage of the phytase mixed to the ration via vitamin supplement and directly with the ration pelleted later, provoked a fall in phytase activity when compared with the other treatments. In the second step, the effect of phytase on the bioavaibility of calcium and phytic phosphorus was evaluated, 2 experiments being accomplished (3 and 4); in both experiments were utilized 576 broiler line chicks, housed in an array of heated batteries, receiving practical diets on the basis of corn and soybean meal (basal) for 21days. At the end of 27 days of age,96 birds were slaughtered for evaluation of the mineral contents (Ca and P) in the tíbias and plasma phosphorus. The excretae were collected from 22 to 27 days of age of the birds. Experiment 3: A CRD with the treatments in 2 x 3 x 2 +4 factorial arrangement was utilized, namely, two levels of total phosphorus (0.35 and 0.45% of total phosphorus), three leveis of phytase (500, 750 and 1,000 FTU) and four additional treatments with levels of 0.35 and 0.45 % of available phosphorus for each sex, with three replicates per treatment. There was significant interaction among levels of phosphorus and phytase (P< 0.05) for weight gain, ration consumption and feed conversion. Phytase did not indicate significant differences when the level 0.45% was utilized, nevertheless, at the level 0.35% as phytase was supplemented, weight gain, ration consumption and feed conversion were improved, chiefly with 1,000 FTU/Kg, in both sexes. The males presented greater weight gain. The ration consumption and feed conversion were equal to those of females. The contrast 0.45% did not affect the performance of males and females, the same not occurring with the level 0.35%,at which the available phosphorus was superior in both the sexes. The highest contents of ashes, phosphorus and calcium in the tíbias and plasma phosphorus were obtained with the levels of 750 and 1,000 FTU/Kg of phytase and 0.45% of total phosphorus. The males presented higher contents of ashes in the tibias. The level 0.45% of available phosphorus presented the greatest contents of ashes, calcium and phosphorus in the tibias, and phosphorus in the plasma. The lowest excretions of phosphorus occurred at the levels 0.35% of total phosphorus and 1,000FTU/kg of phytase. The lowest contents of ashes and calcium in the excretae were obtained with 0.35% and 1,000FTU/Kg of phytase. The females excreted smallest amounts of ashes, calcium and phosphorus than the males. Experiment 4: a CRD with the treatments in 3 x 4 x 2 factorial arrangement, namely, three levels of phytase (0, 500 and 1,000 FTU), four levels of calcium (0.7, 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0%) with four replicates per treatment. The performance was not affected by the treatments utilized, the males being superior to the females in weight gain, feed consumption and conversion. The contents of ashes in the tibias were not affected by the levels of phytase but as calcium levels raised, the ash contents increased. The contents of calcium and phosphorus in the tibias increased with the supplementation of 500 and 1,000 FTU/kg of phytase and with calcium levels. The utilization of phytase did not decrease the excretion of ashes, calcium and phosphorus.

O estudo é uma ação de pesquisa do projeto "Sustentabilidade da pecuária leiteira da agricultura familiar da Amazônia Oriental", desenvolvido pela Embrapa Amazônia Oriental e propôs determinar os principais problemas da nutrição mineral nos sistemas de produção leiteira de pequenas e médias propriedades na microrregião de Castanhal (MrC) e no município de Uruará (MuU), Estado do Pará. Como objetivos específicos visou definir as características da suplementação mineral efetuada nas propriedades, bem como analisar o conteúdo mineral das pastagens formadas de Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu. Para isso, foram utilizados dois estudos sendo que no primeiro foram definidas as características da suplementação mineral nos sistemas de produção leiteira de ambos os locais estudados através de um questionário/entrevista. Dos dados obtidos pelo questionário/entrevista foram extraídas 22 variáveis consideradas importantes que foram classificadas em quatro grupos principais. Utilizou-se a estatística descritiva aplicando-se o teste de Qui-quadrado ao nível de 5% de probabilidade para determinação das diferenças testadas. No segundo estudo foram colhidas amostras de Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu em duas propriedades da MrC e quatro do MuU. As amostras de forragem foram colhidas em dois períodos distintos do ano, final do período seco (novembro/1998) e final do período chuvoso (junho/1999) para determinação de cálcio (Ca), fósforo (P), magnésio (Mg), sódio (Na), potássio (K), cobre (Cu), zinco (Zn), ferro (Fe), manganês (Mn) e cobalto (Co). O delineamento experimental utilizado para a amostragem da forragem foi inteiramente casualisado considerando os dois locais estudados (MrC e MuU) como sendo dois fatores e os dois períodos do ano (chuvoso e seco) foram considerados como sub-parcelas. A análise de variância foi realizada pelo método de mínimos quadrados e o teste F foi utilizado ao nível de 5% para testar os efeitos. O teste de Tukey foi utilizado para comparação das médias. Na microrregião de Castanhal, a Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu não atendeu as necessidades de P, Na, Cu e Zn sugeridas para bovinos de corte, categoria vacas em lactação e demonstra a necessidade de suplementação mineral via cocho. Apesar da atividade leiteira ser mais antiga nessa microrregião, os criadores não conseguem distinguir as necessidades diferenciadas de requerimento dentro das categorias de produção animal. Esse desconhecimento deve ser considerado como um importante fator de restrição de produtividade. Particularmente nessa microrregião, a baixa concentração de P na forragem durante o período chuvoso parece agravar o problema da deficiência mineral por se tratar de um período de maior disponibilidade protéicoenergético da forragem, fazendo com que o animal requeira maiores quantidades do elemento fósforo na dieta. No município de Uruará, a Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu não atendeu as necessidades de P, Na e Cu, sugeridas pelo NRC (1986) para bovinos de corte, categoria vacas em lactação e demonstra também a necessidade de suplementação mineral via cocho. Nesse município, observou-se um baixo consumo de mistura mineral e as condições dos cochos eram precárias. A localização do cocho dentro do curral e o acesso somente durante o período de ordenha inibiu o consumo de mistura minera!. A freqüência elevada de relatos de apetite depravado, atraso no cio, fratura espontânea, diminuição do apetite e emagrecimento dos animais, são sintomas sugestivos de deficiência clínica de P e Cu sintetizam a baixa qualidade da nutrição dos animais neste local.
