In November 2009 the Government published an Action Plan for Health Research. The Plan was prepared by the Health Research Group following a commitment set out in Building Ireland’s Smart Economy (December 2008). The Action Plan, which was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation, provides the lead on national priorities and resource allocation in health research. The Action Plan was prepared to prioritise a programme of actions essential to creating a health research system which supports outstanding individuals, working in world class facilities and conducting leading edge research focused on the needs of patients and the public. The HRG is committed to measuring the success of the Action Plan by the extent to which it meets these deliverables by 2013. One year on, this report reviews the progress being made to implement the Plan.

In a competitive world, the way a firm establishes its organizational arrangements may determine the enhancement of its core competences and the possibility of reaching new markets. Firms that find their skills to be applicable in just one type of market encounter constraints in expanding their markets, and through alliances may find a competitive form of value capture. Hybrid forms of organization appear primarily as an alternative to capturing value and managing joint assets when the market and hierarchy modes do not present any yields for the firm's competitiveness. As a result, this form may present other challenging issues, such as the allocation of rights and principal-agent problems. The biofuel market has presented a strong pattern of changes over the last 10 years. New intra-firm arrangements have appeared as a path to participate or survive among global competition. Given the need for capital to achieve better results, there has been a consistent movement of mergers and acquisitions in the Biofuel sector, especially since the 2008 financial crisis. In 2011 there were five major groups in Brazil with a grinding capacity of more than 15 million tons per year: Raízen (joint venture formed by Cosan and Shell), Louis Dreyfus, Tereos Petrobras, ETH, and Bunge. Major oil companies have implemented the strategy of diversification as a hedge against the rising cost of oil. Using the alliance of Cosan and Shell in the Brazilian biofuel market as a case study, this paper analyses the governance mode and challenging issues raised by strategic alliances when firms aim to reach new markets through the sharing of core competences with local firms. The article is based on documentary research and interviews with Cosan's Investor Relations staff, and examines the main questions involving hybrid forms through the lens of the Transaction Cost Economics (TCE), Agency Theory, Resource Based View (RBV), and dynamic capabilities theoretical approaches. One focal point is knowledge "appropriability" and the specific assets originated by the joint venture. Once the alliance is formed, it is expected that competences will be shared and new capabilities will expand the limits of the firm. In the case studied, Cosan and Shell shared a number of strategic assets related to their competences. Raízen was formed with economizing incentives, as well to continue marshalling internal resources to enhance the company's presence in the world energy sector. Therefore, some challenges might be related to the control and monitoring agents' behavior, considering the two-part organism formed by distinctive organizational culture, tacit knowledge, and long-term incentives. The case study analyzed illustrates the hybrid arrangement as a middle form for organizing the transaction: neither in the market nor in the hierarchy mode, but rather a more flexible commitment agreement with a strategic central authority. The corporate governance devices are also a challenge, since the alignment between the parent companies in the joint ventures is far more complex. These characteristics have led to an organism with bilateral dependence, offering favorable conditions for developing dynamic capabilities. However, these conditions might rely on the partners' long-term interest in the joint venture.

Literature on sex occupational segregation has typically focused on the micro and macro determinants of it, on mobility patterns over the life course, on implications of segregation and mobility for gender inequalities. Rarely the link between sex-type occupations and women’s risk of labour market interruptions over family formation has been explored. In this piece of work we shall analyse whether women who are working in the female-dominated, male-dominated or integrated occupations have more or less chances to remain attached to the labour market, controlling for qualifications, class, sector and contract positions. By drawing from ECHP, and comparing Italy, Spain, Denmark and the UK, we shall in particular see whether such connection varies across countries with different institutional and cultural configurations.We find that, ceteris paribus, only in the UK the sex-composition of an occupation matters: women in female occupations are more likely to move to inactivity than women in mixed or male occupations. In the other countries considered the main cleavages lie elsewhere. In Italy what matters most is the sector of employment (public vs. private). In Spain the sector is relevant too, but also social class and the type of contract held (permanent vs. temporary). In Denmark women’s transitions to inactivity are largely independent of human capital and job characteristics.

The discovery of exhumed continental mantle and hyper-extended crust in present-day magma-poor rifted margins is at the origin of a paradigm shift within the research field of deep-water rifted margins. It opened new questions about the strain history of rifted margins and the nature and composition of sedimentary, crustal and mantle rocks in rifted margins. Thanks to the benefit of more than one century of work in the Alps and access to world-class outcrops preserving the primary relationships between sediments and crustal and mantle rocks from the fossil Alpine Tethys margins, it is possible to link the subsidence history and syn-rift sedimentary evolution with the strain distribution observed in the crust and mantle rocks exposed in the distal rifted margins. In this paper, we will focus on the transition from early to late rifting that is associated with considerable crustal thinning and a reorganization of the rift system. Crustal thinning is at the origin of a major change in the style of deformation from high-angle to low-angle normal faulting which controls basin-architecture, sedimentary sources and processes and the nature of basement rocks exhumed along the detachment faults in the distal margin. Stratigraphic and isotopic ages indicate that this major change occurred in late Sinemurian time, involving a shift of the syn-rift sedimentation toward the distal domain associated with a major reorganization of the crustal structure with exhumation of lower and middle crust. These changes may be triggered by mantle processes, as indicated by the infiltration of MOR-type magmas in the lithospheric mantle, and the uplift of the Brianconnais domain. Thinning and exhumation of the crust and lithosphere also resulted in the creation of new paleogeographic domains, the Proto Valais and Liguria-Piemonte domains. These basins show a complex, 3D temporal and spatial evolution that might have evolved, at least in the case of the Liguria-Piemonte basin, in the formation of an embryonic oceanic crust. The re-interpretation of the rift evolution and the architecture of the distal rifted margins in the Alps have important implications for the understanding of rifted margins worldwide, but also for the paleogeographic reconstruction of the Alpine domain and its subsequent Alpine compressional overprint.

The Mississippi River Trail (MRT) is a world-class bicycle trail that will follow the Mississippi River all the way from its headwaters in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. The trail is partially completed; much of it is still in the planning and development stages. When complete, the MRT will Link over 2,000 miles of recreational trails through 10 states, including 280 miles in Iowa. Designated as a National Millennium Trail, the MRT will preserve natural environments along the river, stimulate economic growth in river communities, and provide bicyclists access to a variety of landscapes, history, and culture. The Iowa Department of Transportation commissioned the Center for Transportation Research and Education at Iowa State University to develop a plan for a safe, economically beneficial, and scenic MRT route through Iowa. This report presents the MRT plan for Iowa. It is organized in the following chapters: Executive Summary; (1) Introduction - vision statement and objectives; (2) Iowa MRT Minimum Design Standards; (3) Iowa MRT Route Analysis; (4) Recommended Improvement Plan; (5) MRT Implementation; and (6) Estimated Benefits and Impacts of the Iowa MRT. The world-class Idrija mercury deposit (western Slovenia) is hosted by highly deformed Permocarboniferous to Middle Triassic sedimentary rocks within a complex tectonic structure at the transition between the External Dinarides and the Southern Alps. Concordant and discordant mineralization formed concomitant with Middle Triassic bimodal volcanism in an aborted rift. A multiple isotopic (C, O, S) investigation of host rocks and ore minerals was performed to put constraints on the source and composition of the fluid, and the hydrothermal alteration. The distributions of the delta(13)C and delta(18)O values of host and gangue carbonates are indicative of a fracture-controlled hydrothermal system, with locally high fluid-rock ratios. Quantitative modeling of the delta(13)C and delta(18)O covariation for host carbonates during temperature dependent fluid-rock interaction, and concomitant precipitation of void-filling dolomites points to a slightly acidic hydrothermal fluid (delta(13)Capproximate to-4parts per thousand and delta(18)Oapproximate to+10parts per thousand), which most likely evolved during isotopic exchange with carbonates under low fluid/rock ratios. The delta(34)S values of hydrothermal and sedimentary sulfur minerals were used to re-evaluate the previously proposed magmatic and evaporitic sulfur sources for the mineralization, and to assess the importance of other possible sulfur sources such as the contemporaneous seawater sulfate, sedimentary pyrite, and organic sulfur compounds. The delta(34)S values of the sulfides show a large variation at deposit down to hand-specimen scale. They range for cinnabar and pyrite from -19.1 to +22.8parts per thousand, and from -22.4 to +59.6parts per thousand, respectively, suggesting mixing of sulfur from different sources. The peak of delta(34)S values of cinnabar and pyrite close to 0parts per thousand is compatible with ore sulfur derived dominantly from a magmatic fluid and/or from hydrothermal leaching of basement rocks. The similar stratigraphic trends of the delta(34)S values of both cinnabar and pyrite suggest a minor contribution of sedimentary sulfur (pyrite and organic sulfur) to the ore formation. Some of the positive delta(34)S values are probably derived from thermochemical reduction of evaporitic and contemporaneous seawater sulfates.

Tämä diplomityö tehtiin osana Componenta Cast Componentsin kolmivuotista toimitusketjujen kehitysprojektia. Työn tavoitteena oli kuvata tyypillinen yrityksen sisäinen toimitusketjuprosessi ja tehdä alustava suorituskykyanalyysi valimon ja konepajan väliseen logistiseen prosessiin liittyen. Tarkoituksena oli myös löytää kehityskohteita materiaali- ja tietovirtojen hallinnassa näiden tuotantoyksiköiden välillä. Logistiikkaan, toimitusketjujen hallintaan ja toimitusketjun suorituskyvyn mittaamiseen liittyvän kirjallisuustutkimuksen sekä käytännön perusteella valittiin sopivat analyysimenetelmät. Näitä menetelmiä hyödynnettiin tilaustoimitus – prosessin kuvaamisessa sekä suorituskyvyn analysoinnissa yrityksen sisäisessä toimitusketjussa. Luonnollisena jatkona kehitettiin ja pantiin käytäntöön toimitusketjua synkronoiva imutyyppinen tuotannon- ja materiaalinohjausmenetelmä. Diplomityöprojektin aikana kehitettiin myös apuvälineet käyttöönotetun menetelmän asianmukaista hyödyntämistä varten. Diplomityöprojektissa otettiin ensimmäiset askeleet kohti integroitua sisäistä toimitusketjua. Uuden tuotannon- ja materiaalinohjausmenetelmän standardisointi muihin menetelmiin yhdistettynä, sekä toimitusketjun avainmittarien jatkokehitys on jo alkanut. Läpimenoaikoja lyhentämällä ja synkronoidun, läpinäkyvän kysyntä-tarjontaketjun avulla integroitumisen astetta voidaan nostaa edelleen. Poikkiorganisatorinen kehitys ja johtaminen toimitusketjussa on avainedellytys menestykseen.

Viimeisien vuosikymmenien aikana teknologinen kehitys on muuttanut yritysten toimintaympäristöä suuresti. Yritysten käyttöön on tullut lukuisia teorioita ja menetelmiä, joilla yrityksen suorituskykyä voidaan mitata, kehittää ja vertailla. Näin myös erilaisten johtamisen menetelmien ja käytäntöjen rooli on korostunut yritysten johtamisjärjestelmissä. Myös yritysten suorituskykyä on tutkittu monella eri tavoin viimeisien vuosien aikana. Näiden tutkimusten tavoitteena on ollut löytää vertailtavuutta globaalien toimijoiden välillä. Tämä tutkimus lähestyy suorituskykyä aivan uudenlaisesta näkökulmasta ja tarkastelee tuloksia vertailuoppimisen, osaamisen ja tiedon johtamisen näkökulmasta. Oleellista on ollut luoda uusi näkökulma aikaisempiin tutkimuksiin, jotka ovat keskittyneet vertailemaan yrityksien operatiivista ja liiketoiminnan suorituskykyä sekä sitä, kuinka hyvin ne ovat pystyneet hyödyntämään parhaita käytäntöjä toiminnassaan. Tutkimuksen teoreettisen tarkastelun tavoite on selkeyttää koko strategisen johtamisen mallia. Tutkimus lähti liikkeelle analysoimalla aikaisemmista yritysten suorituskykyyn tehtyjä tutkimuksia. Tästä tehtiin havainto, että osaamisen johtamista ja kehittämistä on tutkittu varsin vähän yritysten suorituskyvyn kehittymiseen liittyen. Luotiin teoreettinen viitekehys, joka avulla henkilöstön osaaminen liitettiin osaksi strategian toteutumisen prosessia. Tämän tutkimuksen tulokset ja johtopäätökset perustuvat vuosina 1993 ja 2003 Made in Finland tutkimuksessa kerättyyn yritysten suorituskykyä tarkastelevaan aineistoon. Se perustuu 23 yrityksen haastatteluihin. Aineistosta valittiin kaikki ne tulokset, joilla katsottiin olevan merkitystä osaamisen johtamisen ja kehittämisen kannalta. Tutkittujen yritysten suorituskyvyssä oli kymmenen vuoden seurantajakson aikana tapahtunut selvää kehittymistä. Työn joustavuus ja työntekijöiden sitoutuminen on lisääntynyt ja vertailuoppimista on hyödynnetty. Tuotannon prosesseja on kehitetty ja näin uusien tuotteiden markkinoille tuloaikaa on saatu nopeutetuksi. Merkillepantavaa on, että satsaukset koulutukseen eivät ole lisääntyneet vaan osissa tutkituissa yrityksissä satsaukset ovat jopa vähentyneet. Tulokset tavoitteisiin nähden ovat hyvin ristiriitaisia. Toiminnan tehostumista odotetaan kaikilla osa-alueilla. Kuitenkin osaamiseen ei olla valmiita satsaamaan, eikä yritysten johdossa nähdä osaamisen kehittämistä tärkeänä tavoitteiden saavuttamiseksi. Suurimpana esteenä tavoitteen saavuttamiseksi yritysten johto näkee pätevän henkilökunnan saatavuuden. Vaikka moni yrityksistä käyttää tasapainotettua mittaristoa strategisen johtamisen työkaluna, ei sen kaikkia osa-alueita ja niiden tasapainon merkitystä ole selvästi ymmärretty.

The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (www.isb-sib.ch) provides world-class bioinformatics databases, software tools, services and training to the international life science community in academia and industry. These solutions allow life scientists to turn the exponentially growing amount of data into knowledge. Here, we provide an overview of SIB's resources and competence areas, with a strong focus on curated databases and SIB's most popular and widely used resources. In particular, SIB's Bioinformatics resource portal ExPASy features over 150 resources, including UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot, ENZYME, PROSITE, neXtProt, STRING, UniCarbKB, SugarBindDB, SwissRegulon, EPD, arrayMap, Bgee, SWISS-MODEL Repository, OMA, OrthoDB and other databases, which are briefly described in this article.

Companies and organizations business activities rely on information. IT systems that manage master data must provide the highest level of service, world-class scalability and reliable information. This study discusses product information and how it can support the creation of a spare part catalog and the launching of eBusiness. The study consists of a theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical part contains a literature review and a framework for the analysis. For the empirical study two companies were selected and their information management processes were studied and analyzed based on the framework. The empirical results indicate that the challenges the companies face reflect the ones that can be found in the literature study. The results of the empirical study also show that the companies had recognized the issues which need to be developed and had recognized trends in eBusiness and product information management.

Diplomityön tavoitteena oli tuottaa toimenpidesuunnitelma energiatehokkuuden parantamiseksi sekä tilannekatsaus tehtaan energiankäytöstä Saint-Gobain Raken-nustuotteet Oy:n Hyvinkään lasivillatehtaalla. Diplomityön ensisijaiseksi tutki-mustavoitteeksi asetettiin energiankäytön tehostamisen tutkiminen sekä energian-käytön analysointi ja jatkotoimenpidesuunnitelman laatiminen. Diplomityössä osoitettiin että lämmöntalteenotolla poistoilmasta voidaan saavut-taa 2000 MWh lämpöenergiansäästö. Yhteensä hyödynnettävää lämpöenergiaa selvitettiin syntyvän vuodessa 10 600 MWh. WCM- konseptilla, eli tuotannonte-hostamisohjelmalla pyritään energiankäytön systemaattiseen pienentämiseen. Täs-sä diplomityössä on esitetty energiankäytön tehostamisratkaisuja sekä energiate-hokkuuden liittämistä WCM- konseptiin. Diplomityön tuloksia voidaan hyödyntää järjestelmällisen energiatehokkuuden parantamisohjelman kehittämisessä sekä konkreettisten energiansäästötoimenpiteiden toteuttamisessa.
