One of the current challenges even pending of being achieved working with aluminium foams, is the development of easily reproducible methods at industrial level that allow the joint of aluminium foams between them or with other elements as for example aluminium plates for making bigger pieces or with more complex forms, remaining simultaneously in the weld bead the properties and main characteristics of aluminium foam, so much in the joint area or interface, since in the affected closer thermal zone. Currently, the most used joint processes for applying to aluminium foams are based mainly on adhesives and mechanical joins. These solutions initially valid, add technical problems to certain aluminium foams applications, which stop the complete integration of these materials in a more flexible and global manufacture environment. For this reason, current aluminium foam manufacturing processes are restricted to certain offers done to a specific customer requirement, not being able to attend for lack of available solutions, to a great potential market of these materials. In the present work, different joint methods between aluminium foams and between aluminium foams and plates for butt and lap configurations have been developed and characterized based on thermal welding processes.

Coronary and peripheral artery bypass grafting is commonly used to relieve the symptoms of vascular deficiencies, but the Supply Of autologous artery or vein may not be sufficient or suitable for multiple bypass or repeat procedures, necessitating the use of other materials. Synthetic materials are suitable for large bore arteries but often thrombose when used in smaller arteries. Suitable replacement grafts must have appropriate characteristics, including resistance to infection, low immunogenicity and good biocompatability and thromboresistance, with appropriate mechanical and physiological properties and cheap and fast manufacture. Current avenues of graft development include coating synthetic grafts with either biological chemicals or cells with anticoagulatory properties. Matrix templates or acellular tubes of extracellular matrix (such as collagen) may be coated or infiltrated with cultured cells. Once placed into the artery, these grafts may become colonised by host cells and gain many of the properties of normal artery. Tissue-engineered blood vessels may also be formed from layers of human vascular cells grown in culture. These engineered vessels have many of the characteristics of arteries formed in vivo. Artificial arteries may be also be derived from peritoneal granulation tissue in body bioreactors by adapting the body's natural wound healing response to produce a hollow tube. BACKGROUND: Recombinant protein production is universally employed as a solution to obtain the milligram to gram quantities of a given protein required for applications as diverse as structural genomics and biopharmaceutical manufacture. Yeast is a well-established recombinant host cell for these purposes. In this study we wanted to investigate whether our respiratory Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain, TM6*, could be used to enhance the productivity of recombinant proteins over that obtained from corresponding wild type, respiro-fermentative strains when cultured under the same laboratory conditions. RESULTS: Here we demonstrate at least a doubling in productivity over wild-type strains for three recombinant membrane proteins and one recombinant soluble protein produced in TM6* cells. In all cases, this was attributed to the improved biomass properties of the strain. The yield profile across the growth curve was also more stable than in a wild-type strain, and was not further improved by lowering culture temperatures. This has the added benefit that improved yields can be attained rapidly at the yeast's optimal growth conditions. Importantly, improved productivity could not be reproduced in wild-type strains by culturing them under glucose fed-batch conditions: despite having achieved very similar biomass yields to those achieved by TM6* cultures, the total volumetric yields were not concomitantly increased. Furthermore, the productivity of TM6* was unaffected by growing cultures in the presence of ethanol. These findings support the unique properties of TM6* as a microbial cell factory. CONCLUSIONS: The accumulation of biomass in yeast cell factories is not necessarily correlated with a proportional increase in the functional yield of the recombinant protein being produced. The respiratory S. cerevisiae strain reported here is therefore a useful addition to the matrix of production hosts currently available as its improved biomass properties do lead to increased volumetric yields without the need to resort to complex control or cultivation schemes. This is anticipated to be of particular value in the production of challenging targets such as membrane proteins.

Spray-dried materials are being used increasingly in industries such as food, detergent and pharmaceutical manufacture. Spray-dried sodium carbonate is an important product that has a great propensity to cake; its moisture-sorption properties are very different to the crystalline and amorphous species, with a great affinity for atmospheric moisture. This work demonstrates how the noncontact surface analysis of individual particles using atomic force microscopy can highlight the possible mechanisms of unwanted agglomeration. The nondestructive nature of this method allows cycling of localised humidity in situ and repeated scanning of the same particle area. The resulting topography and phase scans showed that humidity cycling caused changes in the distribution of material phases that were not solely dependent on topographical changes. ABSTRACT: This project makes an approach to the new museology and its role on tourist market, with special focus on the educational services in portuguese museums and its relationship with cultural tourism. The investigation about the artistic and cultural patrimony of Guy Fino Museum and the Manufacture, as well as the critic analysis of educational services in important national and international museums, supported the present project of creation of educational services for Guy Fino Museum. The defined main objective of the project is qualifying the touristic and cultural offer represented by the Tapestries of Portalegre. lt is structured in a way that allows activities to be developed in network with other museums in the city: The Municipal Museum and the Museum House of Jose Regio. ln this way, the following areas were chosen: History, History of Arte and Literature. The activities proposed for the themes are three types: dynamic visits, visits - hands on and visits - games, some being developed on-line, in an interactive way. Twelve activities were conceptualized. Ali the proposed activities explore programmed contents that integrate curricular plans of primary school. Some of the activities can also be developed by students of secondary school and families. The translation of the material used should be in a way that they can be used and developed by foreign visitors. The project constitutes a first step for a progressive transformation of the Tapestries of Portalegre in an anchor attraction of the regional cultural tourism, being sure of their unquestionable potentialities to become a national and international attraction.

Off-site manufacture (OSM) offers numerous benefits to all parties in the construction process. The uptake of OSM in Australia has, however, been limited. This limited uptake corresponds to similar trends in the UK and US, although the level of OSM there appears to be increasing. This project undertook three workshops — one each in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia — and 18 interviews with key stakeholders to assist in identifying the general benefits and barriers to OSM uptake in the Australian construction industry. Seven case studies were also undertaken, involving construction projects that used OSM, ranging from civil projects through to residential. Each of these case studies has been analysed to identify what worked and what didn’t, and suggest the lessons to be learned from each project.
