"Preface and apology" on p. [3] contains information on Mrs. Fisher's life and names of benefactors in San Francisco and Oakland who assisted her in writing the book. "Awarded two medals at the San Francisco Mechanics' Institute Fair, 1880, for best Pickles and Sauces and best assortment of Jellies and Preserves. Diploma awarded at Sacrameto State Fair, 1879." Authored by Abby Fisher, an African American and an ex-slave from Mobile, Ala. Recipes originate in the plantation kitchens of the pre-Civil War South.
