Distributions of Mn, Fe, Cu, Cd, Cr, Co and Ni in sea water are investigated (42 samples, dissolved and particulate forms) in the vicinity of the underwater gas vent field on the northwestern slope of the Paramushir Island. While regular background distributions of the elements occur in the shore zone, there is a column of elevated concentrations of particulate matter, particulate Mn, and dissolved Mn, Fe, Cu, Cd, Cr, Co and Ni that coincides with location of the gas plume. This column can be traced as high as 780 m above the bottom. High metal concentrations in water of the plume are attributable to physico-chemical concentration at the phase interface; the source of elevated mineral concentrations is obviously flux of dissolved minerals from interstitial waters, which extends to considerable distances in vertical direction.

ABSTRACT The cultivation of the cane of sugar is one of the most important in many countries of the world. The soils dedicated to this cultivation are usually compacted by the traffic of the machinery in the harvest process. The combined use of the geostatistics with the fractal analysis has demonstrated to be useful for the study of the same ones. The objective of the work was to determine the space changes from the resistance to the penetration of the floor due to the influence of the traffic of the machinery in the harvest process of harvest of the cane of sugar in a Vertisol applying the geostatistic-fractal methodology. The investigation was carried out in the period of harvest 2008-2009. The resistance to the penetration at two moments was evaluated, before and after the harvest. The sampling was realized systematically in grid and transect, selecting 144 and 100 observations before and after the harvest, respectively, and 221 for transect in diagonal. Also the soil moisture content of the ground by the gravimetric method was determined, so 288 random samples in the entire field were taken. The results shown that resistance to penetration values presented a normal distribution deeper than 5 cm before and after harvest. The transit of the agricultural machinery for sugar cane harvest concentrated the space variability at lower distances than the sampling one, reflected an increase in the nugget effect. At the same time, an increase space correlation rank and a redistribution of compaction areas were observed studying the variations in kriging maps. Another effect of the agricultural machinery transit was to induce antipersistence and anisotropy in some horizontal directions. However, in vertical direction of the longest transect an irregular behaviour was induced not only by the machinery as by another factors such as soil cracks, crop rows and allocation.

ABSTRACT The core of this thesis is the theoretical modeling of the interaction of light with a particular type of optical biosensor. This biosensor consists of two parts: in the lower region may have layers of materials with different thicknesses and optical properties, stacked horizontally; at the top, on which directly affects the light beam, there may be structures that make optical properties change in both, the horizontal and in the vertical direction. These biosensors optically respond differently when illuminated depending on its external surface is greater or lesser extent, coated with different types of biological material. In this thesis an approximate analytical model to simulate the optical response of biosensors with structures in its outer region is defined. After verifying the practical validity of the model by comparison with experimental measurements, it is used in the design of biosensors with optimal performance and the definition of new optical interrogation techniques. In particular, the transduction system IROP (Increased Relative Optical Power) based on the effect of the presence of biological material in the total power reflected from the biosensor cell in certain spectral ranges, has been patented and is under development by the startup company BIOD [www.biod.es/], being already available at this time, several diagnostic devices based on this idea. Devices based on this transduction system have proven their efficiency in detecting proteins and infectious agents such as rotavirus and virus of dengue. Finally, the developed theoretical model is used to characterize the optical properties of some of the materials from which biosensors are fabricated, as well as the optical properties of the biological material layers formed at different stages of an immunoassay. The optical parameters of the layers above are obtained by the general method of least squares fit to the experimental curves obtained in immunoassays.

ABSTRACT Since the wall-bounded turbulence was first recognized more than one century ago, its near wall region (buffer layer) has been studied extensively and becomes relatively well understood due to the low local Reynolds number and narrow scale separation. The region just above the buffer layer, i.e., the logarithmic layer, is receiving increasingly more attention nowadays due to its self-similar property. Flores et al. (20076) and Flores & Jim´enez (2010) show that the statistics of logarithmic layer is kind of independent of other layers, implying that it might be possible to study it separately, which would reduce significantly the computational costs for simulations of the logarithmic layer. Some attempts were tried later by Mizuno & Jimenez (2013), who simulated the logarithmic layer without the buffer layer with obtained statistics agree reasonably well with those of full simulations. Besides, the logarithmic layer might be mimicked by other simpler sheardriven turbulence. For example, Pumir (1996) found that the statistically-stationary homogeneous shear turbulence (SS-HST) also bursts, in a manner strikingly similar to the self-sustaining process in wall-bounded turbulence. Based on these considerations, this thesis tries to reveal to what extent is the logarithmic layer of channels similar to the simplest shear-driven turbulence, SS-HST, by comparing both kinematics and dynamics of coherent structures in the two flows. Results about the channel are shown by Lozano-Dur´an et al. (2012) and Lozano-Dur´an & Jim´enez (20146). The roadmap of this task is divided into three stages. First, SS-HST is investigated by means of a new direct numerical simulation code, spectral in the two horizontal directions and compact-finite-differences in the direction of the shear. No remeshing is used to impose the shear-periodic boundary condition. The influence of the geometry of the computational box is explored. Since HST has no characteristic outer length scale and tends to fill the computational domain, longterm simulations of HST are ‘minimal’ in the sense of containing on average only a few large-scale structures. It is found that the main limit is the spanwise box width, Lz, which sets the length and velocity scales of the turbulence, and that the two other box dimensions should be sufficiently large (Lx > 2LZ, Ly > Lz) to prevent other directions to be constrained as well. It is also found that very long boxes, Lx > 2Ly, couple with the passing period of the shear-periodic boundary condition, and develop strong unphysical linearized bursts. Within those limits, the flow shows interesting similarities and differences with other shear flows, and in particular with the logarithmic layer of wallbounded turbulence. They are explored in some detail. They include a self-sustaining process for large-scale streaks and quasi-periodic bursting. The bursting time scale is approximately universal, ~ 20S~l (S is the mean shear rate), and the availability of two different bursting systems allows the growth of the bursts to be related with some confidence to the shearing of initially isotropic turbulence. It is concluded that SS-HST, conducted within the proper computational parameters, is a very promising system to study shear turbulence in general. Second, the same coherent structures as in channels studied by Lozano-Dur´an et al. (2012), namely three-dimensional vortex clusters (strong dissipation) and Qs (strong tangential Reynolds stress, -uv), are studied by direct numerical simulation of SS-HST with acceptable box aspect ratios and Reynolds number up to Rex ~ 250 (based on Taylor-microscale). The influence of the intermittency to time-independent threshold is discussed. These structures have similar elongations in the streamwise direction to detached families in channels until they are of comparable size to the box. Their fractal dimensions, inner and outer lengths as a function of volume agree well with their counterparts in channels. The study about their spatial organizations found that Qs of the same type are aligned roughly in the direction of the velocity vector in the quadrant they belong to, while Qs of different types are restricted by the fact that there should be no velocity clash, which makes Q2s (ejections, u < 0, v > 0) and Q4s (sweeps, u > 0, v < 0) paired in the spanwise direction. This is verified by inspecting velocity structures, other quadrants such as u-w and v-w in SS-HST and also detached families in the channel. The streamwise alignment of attached Qs with the same type in channels is due to the modulation of the wall. The average flow field conditioned to Q2-Q4 pairs found that vortex clusters are in the middle of the pair, but prefer to the two shear layers lodging at the top and bottom of Q2s and Q4s respectively, which makes the spanwise vorticity inside vortex clusters does not cancel. The wall amplifies the difference between the sizes of low- and high-speed streaks associated with attached Q2-Q4 pairs as the pairs reach closer to the wall, which is verified by the correlation of streamwise velocity conditioned to attached Q2s and Q4s with different heights. Vortex clusters in SS-HST associated with Q2s or Q4s are also flanked by a counter rotating streamwise vortices in the spanwise direction as in the channel. The long conical ‘wake’ originates from tall attached vortex clusters found by del A´ lamo et al. (2006) and Flores et al. (2007b), which disappears in SS-HST, is only true for tall attached vortices associated with Q2s but not for those associated with Q4s, whose averaged flow field is actually quite similar to that in SS-HST. Third, the temporal evolutions of Qs and vortex clusters are studied by using the method invented by Lozano-Dur´an & Jim´enez (2014b). Structures are sorted into branches, which are further organized into graphs. Both spatial and temporal resolutions are chosen to be able to capture the most probable pointwise Kolmogorov length and time at the most extreme moment. Due to the minimal box effect, there is only one main graph consist by almost all the branches, with its instantaneous volume and number of structures follow the intermittent kinetic energy and enstrophy. The lifetime of branches, which makes more sense for primary branches, loses its meaning in SS-HST because the contributions of primary branches to total Reynolds stress or enstrophy are almost negligible. This is also true in the outer layer of channels. Instead, the lifetime of graphs in channels are compared with the bursting time in SS-HST. Vortex clusters are associated with almost the same quadrant in terms of their mean velocities during their life time, especially for those related with ejections and sweeps. As in channels, ejections in SS-HST move upwards with an average vertical velocity uτ (friction velocity) while the opposite is true for sweeps. Vortex clusters, on the other hand, are almost still in the vertical direction. In the streamwise direction, they are advected by the local mean velocity and thus deformed by the mean velocity difference. Sweeps and ejections move faster and slower than the mean velocity respectively, both by 1.5uτ . Vortex clusters move with the same speed as the mean velocity. It is verified that the incoherent structures near the wall is due to the wall instead of small size. The results suggest that coherent structures in channels are not particularly associated with the wall, or even with a given shear profile.

We describe the characteristics of the rapidly rotating molecular disk in the nucleus of the mildly active galaxy NGC4258. The morphology and kinematics of the disk are delineated by the point-like watervapor emission sources at 1.35-cm wavelength. High angular resolution [200 microas where as is arcsec, corresponding to 0.006 parsec (pc) at 6.4 million pc] and high spectral resolution (0.2 km.s-1 or nu/Deltanu = 1.4 x 10(6)) with the Very-Long-Baseline Array allow precise definition of the disk. The disk is very thin, but slightly warped, and is viewed nearly edge-on. The masers show that the disk is in nearly perfect Keplerian rotation within the observable range of radii of 0.13-0.26 pc. The approximately random deviations from the Keplerian rotation curve among the high-velocity masers are approximately 3.5 km.s-1 (rms). These deviations may be due to the masers lying off the midline by about +/-4 degrees or variations in the inclination of the disk by +/-4 degrees. Lack of systematic deviations indicates that the disk has a mass of <4 x 10(6) solar mass (M[symbol: see text]). The gravitational binding mass is 3.5 x 10(7) M[symbol: see text], which must lie within the inner radius of the disk and requires that the mass density be >4 x 10(9) M[symbol: see text].pc-3. If the central mass were in the form of a star cluster with a density distribution such as a Plummer model, then the central mass density would be 4 x 10(12) M[symbol: see text].pc-3. The lifetime of such a cluster would be short with respect to the age of the galaxy [Maoz, E. (1995) Astrophys. J. Lett. 447, L91-L94]. Therefore, the central mass may be a black hole. The disk as traced by the systemic velocity features is unresolved in the vertical direction, indicating that its scale height is <0.0003 pc (hence the ratio of thickness to radius, H/R, is <0.0025). For a disk in hydrostatic equilibrium the quadrature sum of the sound speed and Alfven velocity is <2.5 km.s-1, so that the temperature of the disk must be <1000 K and the toroidal magnetic field component must be <250 mG. If the molecular mass density in the disk is 10(10) cm-3, then the disk mass is approximately 10(4) M[symbol: see text], and the disk is marginally stable as defined by the Toomre stability parameter Q (Q = 6 at the inner edge and 1 at the outer edge). The inward drift velocity is predicted to be <0.007 km.s-1, for a viscosity parameter of 0.1, and the accretion rate is <7 x 10(-5) M[symbol: see text].yr-1. At this value the accretion would be sufficient to power the nuclear x-ray source of 4 x 10(40) ergs-1 (1 erg = 0.1 microJ). The volume of individual maser components may be as large as 10(46) cm3, based on the velocity gradients, which is sufficient to supply the observed luminosity. The pump power undoubtedly comes from the nucleus, perhaps in the form of x-rays. The warp may allow the pump radiation to penetrate the disk obliquely [Neufeld, D. A. & Maloney, P. R. (1995) Astrophys. J. Lett. 447, L17-L19]. A total of 15 H2O megamasers have been identified out of >250 galaxies searched. Galaxy NGC4258 may be the only case where conditions are optimal to reveal a well-defined nuclear disk. Future measurement of proper motions and accelerations for NGC4258 will yield an accurate distance and a more precise definition of the dynamics of the disk

The development of a Laser Doppler Anemometer technique to measure the velocity distribution in a commercial plate heat exchanger is described. Detailed velocity profiles are presented and a preliminary investigation is reported on flow behaviour through a single cell in the channel matrix. The objective of the study was to extend previous investigations of plate heat exchanger flow patterns in the laminar range with the eventual aim of establishing the effect of flow patterns on heat transfer performance, thus leading to improved plate heat exchanger design and design methods. Accurate point velocities were obtained by Laser Anemometry in a perspex replica of the metal channel. Oil was used as a circulating liquid with a refractive index matched to that of the perspex so that the laser beams were not distorted. Cell-by-cell velocity measurements over a range of Reynolds number up to ten showed significant liquid mal-distribution. Local cell velocities were found to be as high as twenty seven times average velocity, contrary to the previously held belief of four times. The degree of mal-distribution varied across the channel as well as in the vertical direction, and depended on the upward or downward direction of flow. At Reynolds numbers less than one, flow zig-zagged from one side of the channel to the other in wave form, but increases in Reynolds number improved liquid distribution. A detailed examination of selected cells showed velocity variations in different directions, together with variation within individual cells. Experimental results are also reported on the flow split when passing through a single cell in a section of a channel . These observations were used to explain mal-distribution in the perspex channel itself.

A test protocol and a data analysis method are developed in this paper on the basis of linear viscoelastic theory to characterize the anisotropic viscoelastic properties of undamaged asphalt mixtures. The test protocol includes three nondestructive tests: (1) uniaxial compressive creep test, (2) indirect tensile creep test, and (3) the uniaxial tensile creep test. All three tests are conducted on asphalt mixture specimens at three temperatures (10, 20, and 30°C) to determine the tensile and compressive properties at each temperature and then to construct the master curve of each property. The determined properties include magnitude and phase angle of the compressive complex modulus in the vertical direction, magnitude and phase angle of the tensile complex modulus, and the magnitude and phase angle of the compressive complex modulus in the horizontal plane. The test results indicate that all tested asphalt mixtures have significantly different tensile properties from compressive properties. The peak value of the master curve of the tensile complex modulus phase angle is within a range from 65 to 85°, whereas the peak value of the compressive moduli phase angle in both directions ranges from 35 to 55°. In addition, the undamaged asphalt mixtures exhibit distinctively anisotropic properties in compression. The magnitude of the compressive modulus in the vertical direction is approximately 1.2 to ̃2 times of the magnitude of the compressive modulus in the horizontal plane. Dynamic modulus tests are performed to verify the results of the proposed test protocol. The test results from the proposed test protocol match well with those from the dynamic tests. © 2012 American Society of Civil Engineers.

CHAPTER II - The Chrysocyon brachyurus is the biggest South American canid which has a high frequency of dental injuries, both in wild and captivity. Thus, veterinary procedures are necessary to preserve the feeding capacity of hundreds of captive specimens worldwide. The aim of this study was to study the mandibular morphometry of maned wolf with emphasis on the establishment of anatomic references to the anesthetic blockage of the inferior alveolar and mental nerves. Therefore, 15 measurements in 22 hemimandibles of C. brachyurus adults were taken. For extra-oral technique of blockage of the inferior alveolar nerve at the level of the mandibular foramen, it is stated that the needle should be advanced, close to the medial surface of the mandibular ramus, by 11.4 mm perpendiculary from the palpable concavity. Alternatively, the needle can be introduced for 30.4 mm from the angular process at 20-25 degrees angle with the ventral margin. For blocking only the mentual nerve, it is recommended the introduction of needle for 10 mm, close to the lateral aspect of the mandibular body, at the level of the lower first premolar. The mandibular foramen showed similars position, size and symmetry in the maned wolfs specimens examined. The comparison of the data with those available for other carnivores reflects the necessity for determining these anatomical references specifically for each species.

Due to the limitation of the lens effect of the optical fibre and the inhomogeneity of the laser fluence on different cores, it is still challenging to controllably inscribe different fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) in multicore fibres. In this article, we reported the FBG inscription in four core fibres (FCFs), whose cores are arranged in the corners of a square lattice. By investigating the influence of different inscription conditions during inscription, different results, such as simultaneous inscription of all cores, selectively inscription of individual or two cores, and even double scanning in perpendicular core couples by diagonal, are achieved. The phase mask scanning method, consisting of a 244nm Argon-ion frequencydoubled laser, air-bearing linear transfer stage and cylindrical lens and mirror setup, is used to precisely control the grating inscription in FCFs. The influence of three factors is systematically investigated to overcome the limitations, and they are the defocusing length between the cylindrical lens and the bare fibre, the rotation geometry of the fibre to the irritation beam, and the relative position of the fibre in the vertical direction of the laser beam.

The present study on the vertical structure of horizontal wind variability in the surface boundary layer over Sriharikota. Based on clock wind speed and direction measuring meteorological tower facility from seven levels in the 100 m layer. The study on wind variability and elliptical approximation of wind hodographs investigated for this tropical coastal station established that Sriharikota is of meso-scale weather entity. Wind variability ratio increases from lower levels to upper levels. In South West monsoon months the station is of high ratio values and it gets affected with meso-scale weather features like thunderstorms. Average total shears are observed greater values than scalar shears. Scalar shears are high in the lowest shear levels compared to upper levels. Semi diurnal types of oscillation in average total shears are found in south west monsoon months. During cyclonic storm passage it is observed that there can be significant difference in mean wind speed from 10 m to 100 m level, but it is not so for peak wind speeds. The variations in wind variability ratio in different months is clearly depicted its strong link to define meso-scale or synoptic –scale forcing domination for this station. Meso-scale forcing is characterized by diurnal wind variability and synoptic- scale forcing by interdiurnal wind variability.

The literature on vertical disparity is complicated by the fact that several different definitions of the term “vertical disparity” are in common use, often without a clear statement about which is intended or a widespread appreciation of the properties of the different definitions. Here, we examine two definitions of retinal vertical disparity: elevation-latitude and elevation-longitude disparities. Near the fixation point, these definitions become equivalent, but in general, they have quite different dependences on object distance and binocular eye posture, which have not previously been spelt out. We present analytical approximations for each type of vertical disparity, valid for more general conditions than previous derivations in the literature: we do not restrict ourselves to objects near the fixation point or near the plane of regard, and we allow for non-zero torsion, cyclovergence, and vertical misalignments of the eyes. We use these expressions to derive estimates of the latitude and longitude vertical disparities expected at each point in the visual field, averaged over all natural viewing. Finally, we present analytical expressions showing how binocular eye position—gaze direction, convergence, torsion, cyclovergence, and vertical misalignment—can be derived from the vertical disparity field and its derivatives at the fovea.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate through radiographic and microscopic analysis the efficiency of the filling techniques by vertical hidraulic compression after the root canal mechanical instrumentation in vitro as well to evaluate the marginal apical leakage through macroscopic and microscopic analysis. Thirty human mandibular molars were used , they were divided on three groups, these were subdivided on six subgroups with five specimens each, come down to 106 root canals filled. Initially, the teeth were instrumented with Profile system series 29 and filled with two ways: single accessory cone or single cone associated with gutta-percha secundary cone, with Fill Canal sealer or Sealer 26. Completed the filling, the teeth were coated with araldit and finger -nail polish except for the apical 2 mm and dried for 3 hours, thep radiographs were taken of the teeth in orto and disto-radiai directions. Next, the coronal seal was carried out with composite resin photopolymerized and with their process of making impermeable. Teeth of positive controls were used without araldit and finger-nail polish whereas the negative controls were used with total coat of araldit and finger-nail polish. The specimens were placed in 2% Methylene Blue dye for 24 hours and thermocycled for 7 days. Afterwards, sections were made of each tooth at mesial and distal roat, after this the teeth were radiographed at buccolíngual direction for a macroscopic analysis and at buccolingual and mesiodistal directions for assessment of the marginal apical leakage. Cross sections were made 3 mm to 3mm since the tooth apice. The sections obtained for each group were observed with a stereomicroscope to evaluate the quality of the root canal filling and the marginal apical leakage. The results showed that: In the four techniques the marginal dye leakage was present in the apical third; in all groups the quality of the root canal filling in the radiography was better at mesial root canal and the single cone technique showed inefficient when only a single distal root canal was present. In the radiographic evaluation the best quality of the root canal filling was observed in the 1A group (single accessory cone + FiIl Canal), as in the mesial root as in the distal root wich Shcwed twe root canals: when the distaI root had only one canal. the best result was showed by 28 group (single accessory cone associated with secundary cone + Fill Canal) In the macroscopic analysis of longitudinal !eaKage (outside surface). less leakage was showed as In the mesial root as in the distal root in the negative control group (3) followed 2A group (single accessory cone + Sealer 26). When the microscopic analysis of tranversal leakage of both roots (inside surface) was carried out. the groups that showed less dye leakage were the negative control (38) followed the 28 group (single acessory cone associated with secundary cone + Sealer 26). The homogeneity o filling was best noted in the 1 A group (.single accessoty cone + Fill Canal). The groups that showed less dye penetration in the tranversal leakage (total area) were negative control (3B) and 2B
