Purpose: The paper aims to explore the nature and purpose of higher education (HE) in the twenty-first century, focussing on how it can help fashion a green knowledge-based economy by developing approaches to learning and teaching that are social, networked and ecologically sensitive. Design/methodology/approach: The paper presents a discursive analysis of the skills and knowledge requirements of an emerging green knowledge-based economy using a range of policy focussed and academic research literature. Findings: The business opportunities that are emerging as a more sustainable world is developed requires the knowledge and skills that can capture and move then forward but in a complex and uncertain worlds learning needs to non-linear, creative and emergent. Practical implications: Sustainable learning and the attributes graduates will need to exhibit are prefigured in the activities and learning characterising the work and play facilitated by new media technologies. Social implications: Greater emphasis is required in higher learning understood as the capability to learn, adapt and direct sustainable change requires interprofessional co-operation that must utlise the potential of new media technologies to enhance social learning and collective intelligence. Originality/value: The practical relationship between low-carbon economic development, social sustainability and HE learning is based on both normative criteria and actual and emerging projections in economic, technological and skills needs.

In this article, we advocate for the use of a social-technical model of trust to support interaction designers in further reflecting on trust-enabling interaction design values that foster participation. Our rationale is built upon the believe that technological-mediated social participation needs trust, and it is with trust-enabling interactions that we foster the will for collaborate and share—the two key elements of participation. This article starts by briefly presenting a social-technical model of trust and then moves on with establishing authors rational that interconnects trust with technological-mediated social participation. It continues by linking the trust value to the context of design critique and critical design, and ends by illustrating how to incorporate the trust value into design. This is achieved by proposing an analytical tool that can serve to inform interaction designers to better understand the potential design options and reasons for choosing them.

Climate change mitigation is driving demand for energy-efficient and environmentally conscious commercial buildings in Australia. In the Australian subtropics, high rainfall, warm weather and humidity present unique challenges and opportunities for the architects tasked with designing eco-sensitive projects. The case of the James Street Market in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley shows that climate-responsive design is an effective approach for reducing the environmental impact of commercial developments. The James Street Market combines climate-responsiveness, environmentally sensitive design strategies and smart planning to create a more sustainable retail precinct. This paper details the design strategies featured in the James Street Market, the project that kicked off a renaissance in climate-responsive commercial building design in Brisbane.

The Generation Workshop Program 2010, a part of the Queensland Government Unlimited: Designing for the Asia Pacific Event Program, consisted of two one-day intensive design thinking workshops run on October 7-8, 2011 at The Edge, State Library of Queensland, for 100 senior secondary students and 20 secondary teachers self-selected from the subject areas of Visual Art, Graphics and Industrial Technology and Design. Participants were drawn from a database of Brisbane and regional Queensland private and public schools from the goDesign and Living City Workshop Programs. The workshop aimed to facilitate awareness in young people of the role of design in society and the value of design thinking skills in solving complex problems facing the Asia Pacific Region, and to inspire the generation of strategies for our future cities. It also aimed to encourage the collaboration of professional designers with secondary schools to inspire post-secondary pathways and idea generation for education. Inspired by international and national speakers Bunker Roy (Barefoot College) and Hael Kobayashi (Associate Producer on "Happy Feet" film for Australia's Animal Logic), the Unlimited showcase exhibition Make Change: Design Thinking in Action and ‘Idea Starters’/teaching resources provided, students worked with a teacher in ten random teams, to generate optimistic strategies for the Ideal City of tomorrow, each considering a theme – Food, Water, Transport, Ageing, Growth, Employment, Shelter, Health, Education and Energy. Each team of 6 was led by a professional designer (from the discipline of architecture, interior design, industrial design, urban design, graphic design or landscape architecture) who was a catalyst for driving the student creative thinking process. Assisted by illustrators, the teams prepared a visual presentation of their idea from art materials provided. The workshop culminated in a video-taped interactive design chatter to the larger group, which will be utilised as a toolkit and praxis for teachers as part of the State Library of Queensland Design Minds Project. The knowledge economy relies on the diffusion and use of knowledge as well as its creation (Houghton and Sheenan, 2000). The future success of economic activity will depend on the capacity of organisations to transform by increasing their flexibility. In particular, this transformation is dependant on a decentralised, networked and multi-skilled workforce. To help organisations transition, new strategies and structures for education are required. Education systems need to concentrate less on specialist skills and more on the development of people with broad-based problem solving skills that are adaptable, with social and inter-personal communication skills necessary for networking and communication. This paper presents the findings of a ‘Knowledge Economy Market Development Mapping Study’ conducted to identify the value of design education programs from primary through to tertiary level in Queensland, Australia. The relationship of these programs to the development of the capacities mentioned above is explored. The study includes the collection of qualitative and quantitative data consisting of a literature review, focus groups and survey. Recommendations for the future development of design education programs in Queensland, Australia are proposed, and future research opportunities are presented and discussed.

The Second Skin 2012 Workshop Program consisted of a full-day intensive design immersion workshop run on Saturday 14 July 2012, at the QUT Faculty of Creative Industries Fashion Studios at Kelvin Grove Brisbane, Australia, for 30? self-selected high-achieving junior and middle school (year 5-9) students, as part of the Queensland Academies ‘Young Scholars’ Program. Inspired by a scientist researching the impact of sun on skin, and mentored by tertiary fashion design and interior design educators, and six tertiary fashion design and interior design students, the workshop explored science and design-inspired prototype solutions for sun-safety. This action research study aimed to facilitate an acute awareness in young people of the sun safety message (alternative to a scare campaign), the role of design in society and the value of design thinking skills in solving complex challenges, and to inspire the generation of strategies to address a systemic health issue. It also aimed to investigate the value of collaboration between junior and middle school students, tertiary design educators and students and industry professionals in targeting youth sun safety, and inspiring post-secondary pathways and idea generation for education. During the workshop, students developed sketching, making, communication, presentation and collaboration skills to improve their design process, while considering social, cultural and environmental opportunities. Through a series of hands-on collaborative design experiments, participants explored in teams of five, ways in which a ‘second skin’ can mirror elements of our skin – the ability to protect, divide, enclose, stretch, scar, pattern, peel and reveal – inspiring both functional and aesthetic design solutions. Underpinned by the State Library of Queensland Design Minds Website ‘inquire, ideate and implement’ model of design thinking, the experiments culminated in the development of a detailed client brief, the design and fabrication of a fashionable sun safe clothing range and then a team presentation and modelling of prototypes in a fashion parade, viewed also by parents. The final collections were judged by three prominent judges: Louise Baldwin - Executive Manager Public Health QLD Cancer Council, Shane Thompson - Architect and 2012 Queensland Smart Design Fellow, and Leigh Buchanan – Fashion designer and Project Runway Australia finalist. The workshop was filmed for Queensland television program ‘Totally Wild’ for dissemination of the value of design, the Design Minds model and the sun safety message to a wider target youth audience.

The goDesign Express 2011 Workshop was a design immersion workshop run by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Built Environment and Engineering Faculty during three weeks of 70-minute art class periods/sessions in August/September 2011 at Morayfield State High School, for 80 Grade 10 and 64 Grade 11 art students and two teachers, and October 2011 at Narangba Valley State High School for 60 Grade 10 and 30 Grade 11 art students and two teachers. Funded and administrated through QUT’s Widening Participation Program, which supports outreach activities to increase tertiary enrolments for under represented groups (such as low-SES, rural and indigenous students), the program utilised two activities from Day 1 of the highly successful 3-day goDesign Travelling Workshop Program for Regional Secondary Students (http://eprints.qut.edu.au/47747/). In contrast to this program, which was facilitated by two tertiary design educators, the goDesign Express 2011 Workshop was facilitated primarily by three tertiary interior design/architecture students, with assistance from a design educator. This action research study aimed to facilitate an awareness in young people, of the value of design thinking skills in generating strategies to solve local community challenges. It also aimed to investigate the value of collaboration between secondary school students and teachers, and tertiary design students and educators, in inspiring post-secondary pathways for school students, professional development for schoolteachers, and alternative career prospects and leadership skills for tertiary design students. During the workshop, secondary students and teachers explored, analysed and reimagined their local community through a series of scaffolded problem solving activities around the theme of ‘place’. Students worked individually and in groups designing graphics, fashion and products, and utilising sketching, making, communication, collaboration and presentation skills to improve their design process, while considering social, cultural and environmental opportunities for their local community. The workshop was mentioned in a news article in the local Caboolture Shire Herald newspaper.

In this paper, we report the device characteristics of ambipolar thin-film transistors (TFTs) based on a diketopyrrolopyrrole-benzothiadiazole copolymer. This polymer semiconductor exhibits the largest comparable electron and hole mobility values in a single organic semiconductor. The key to realizing such high mobility values, which are $0.5&cm}{2}/\hbox{V}̇\hbox{s, is molecular design, i.e., the use of suitable surface treatments of the source/drain contact electrodes and device architectures, particularly top-gate configurations. The subthreshold characteristics of the TFT devices are greatly improved by the use of dual-gate device geometry. We also report the first measurement of the velocity distribution of electron and hole velocities in an ambipolar organic semiconductor.

STAC is a mobile application (app) designed to promote the benefits of climate-aware urban development in Subtropical environments. Although, STAC is primarily tool for understanding climate efficient buildings in Brisbane, Australia, it also demonstrates how other exemplary buildings operate in other subtropical cities of the world. The STAC research and development team applied research undertaken by the Centre for Subtropical Design (Brisbane) to profile buildings past and present that have contributed to the creation of a vibrant society, a viable economy, a healthy environment, and an authentic sense of place. In collaboration with researchers from the field of Interaction Design, this knowledge and data was collated, processed and curated for presentation via a custom mobile application designed to distribute this important research for review and consideration on-location in local settings and for comparison across all other global subtropical regions and projects identified by this research. This collaboration adopted a Design-based Research (DBR) Methodology guided by the main tenets of research and design iteration and cross-discipline collaboration in real-world settings, resulting in the formulation of contextually-sensitive design principles, theories, and tools for design intervention. Combined with significant context review of available technology and data and subsequent case study analysis of exemplar design applications.

Landslide is a kind of serious geological hazards and its damage is very great. In recent years, landslides become more and more frequent along with increase of scale of engineering constructions and cause greater loss. Consequently, how to protect landslides has become important research subject in the engineering field. This paper improves the method how to compute landslide thrust and solves the irrational problem in the design of piles because of the irrational landslide thrust according to the theory and technology of existed anti-slide piles and pre-stressed cable anti-slide piles. Modern pre-stressing technology has been introduced and load balancing method has been used to improve the stressing behavior of anti-slide piles. Anchor cables, anti-slide piles and modern pre-stressing technology have been used to prevention complicated landslide. It is an important base to select values for the landslide thrust. An improved method to calculate design thrust of anti-slide piles has been presented in this paper on the base of residual thrust method by comparing existing methods to select values of landslide thrust in the design of anti-slide piles. In the method, residual landslide thrust behind the anti-slide piles and residual skid resistance before the piles has been analyzed, equitable distribution of residual landslide thrust behind the piles has been realized, and the method to select value of design thrust becomes more reasonable. The pre-stressed cable anti-slide piles are developed from the common anti-slide piles and are common method to prevent landslide. Their principle is that internal force of anti-slide piles is adjusted and size of section is diminished by changing constraint conditions of anti-slide piles. For landslides with deep slip surface and large scale of slopes, limitation of the method appears. Such landslides are in need of long piles and anchor cables which are not only non-economic but also can generate larger deformation and leave potential danger after prevention. For solving the problem, a new kind of anti-slide piles, inner pre-stressing force anti-slide piles, is presented in this paper, and its principle is that an additional force, which is generated in the inner anti-slide piles by arranging pre-stressed reinforcement or tight wire in a certain form in interior of anti-slide piles and stretching the steel reinforcement or tight wire, may balance out the internal force induced by landslide thrust whole or partly (load balancing method). The method will change bending moment which anti-slide piles are not good at bearing into compressive stress which piles are good at bearing, improve stressing performance of anti-slide piles greatly, diminish size of section, and make anti-slide piles not fissured in the natural service or postpone appearance of the fissures, and improve viability of anti-slide piles. Pre-stressed cable anti-slide piles and inner pre-stressing force anti-slide piles go by the general name of pre-stressed structure anti-slide piles in the paper, and their design and calculation method is also analyzed. A new calculation method is provided in the paper for design of anti-slide piles. For pre-stressed structure anti-slide piles, a new computation mode is firstly presented in the paper on the foundation of cantilever piles. In the mode, constraint form of load-bearing section of the anti-slide piles should be confirmed according to reservoir conditions in order to figure out amount of pre-stress of the anchor cables, and internal force should be analyzed for the load-bearing section of pre-stressed structure anti-slide piles so as to confirm anchorage section of anti-slide piles. Pre-stressed cables of the pre-stressed cable anti-slide piles can be arranged as required. This paper analyzes the load-bearing section of single-row and double-row pre-stressed cable anti-slide piles and provides a calculation method for design of the pre-stressed cable anti-slide piles. Inner pre-stressing force anti-slide piles are a new kind of structural style. Their load-bearing section is divided into four computation modes according to whether pre-stressed cables are applied for exterior of the anti-slide piles, and whether single-row or double-row exterior pre-stressed cables are applied. The load balancing method is used to analyze the computation modes for providing a method to design the inner pre-stressing force anti-slide piles rationally. Pre-stressed cable anti-slide piles and inner pre-stressing force anti-slide piles are applied to research on Mahe landfall in Yalong Lenggu hydropower station by the improved method to select value of design thrust of anti-slide piles. A good effect is obtained in the analysis.

En utilisant des approches qualitative and quantitative cette thèse démontre que les aspects intangibles des espaces architecturaux influencent le bien-être humain. Le but est de faire savoir que les espaces intérieurs ont un impact sur le bien-être et que l’architecture peut être considérée comme une solution pour satisfaire les besoins des usagers. Dans la première étude, l’approche qualitative est explorée en utilisant la narration pour identifier les aspects intangibles des espaces intérieurs qui affectent le bien-être. Une discussion s’articule autour du Modèle de Réponses Expérientielles des Humains (Model of Human Experiential Responses to Space) et de son importance comme outil pour déterrer les caractéristiques environnementales qui influencent le bien-être et qui peut être utile pour les professionnels du design. Les résultats démontrent que 43 catégories sont interprétées comme étant des aspects intangibles et servent de canevas pour trois autres études. Les résultats démontrent que certaines caractéristiques environnementales similaires dans les résidences et les bureaux augmentent le sentiment de satisfaction et de bien-être. Dans la deuxième étude, une approche quantitative est explorée en utilisant les neurosciences et l’architecture afin de mesurer comment les espaces architecturaux affectent le bien-être. Le concept de neuroscience / environnement / comportement est utilisé où huit corrélats neuroscientifiques (Zeisel 2006) sont investigués afin de mesurer les effets du cerveau sur les espaces architecturaux. Les résultats démontrent que l’environnement peut affecter l’humeur, le niveau d’attention et le niveau de stress chez les humains et peut également augmenter leur performance. Les deux études contribuent aux connaissances que les caractéristiques environnementales affectent l’humeur et le niveau de satisfaction de la même façon dans les espaces résidentiels et dans les espaces de bureaux. Un bon environnement qui énergise les employés peut affecter leur performance au travail de façon positive (Vischer 2005).

La revolución del internet ha llevado a muchos cambios. Con el paso del tiempo, dependemos menos de los papeles y más de los archivos digitales. Los niveles de información han incrementado exponencialmente y la interconectividad que han brindado servicios como redes sociales se encuentra en niveles jamás pensados hace media década. Sin embargo, el mercado laboral tradicional ha visto pocos cambios; a pesar de que han surgido numerosas ocupaciones y desaparecido puestos del mismo modo, la gran mayoría de personas se ven obligadas a buscar el sustento propio y de sus familias dedicándole una cantidad considerable de tiempo a su trabajo y dejando de lado muchos otros asuntos pertinentes al hogar, a los negocios e incluso asuntos personales. El sistema de adquisición de servicios se encuentra completamente estancado. En Colombia, según cifras de 2011 del Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadistica (DANE), existen más de 10 millones de viviendas y más de 500.000 establecimientos de comercio, que por lo menos una vez por año tienen un reparo para hacer, por esta razón, se genera una amplia demanda en la prestación de este tipo de servicios. Miles de personas continúan sin encontrar servicios específicos a sus necesidades en el momento adecuado, incluso cuando existe dinero destinado hacia los mismos, en gran parte debido a los esquemas tradicionales y la inhabilidad de conectar necesidades con servicios. Este emprendimiento busca cambiar ese esquema tradicional de las páginas amarillas, los clasificados y otras fuentes que se han quedado en el siglo XX como medio publicitario de trabajos realizados por independientes en temas relacionados con el hogar u oficina y abrir camino hacia una nueva forma de encontrar un apareamiento en tiempo real y enfocado en los consumidores, creando una sitio web y posteriormente aplicaciones móviles, en la que cada cliente puede comparar los precios estandarizados de cada servicio del hogar, pagar electrónicamente lo pactado y dejar calificaciones del servicio posteriormente; cambiando el estilo de negociación de modo más formal y bajo un esquema que logre acuerdos mutuamente beneficiales. En el corto plazo, se busca que las personas puedan considerar alternativas a los esquemas existentes para dar a satisfacer sus necesidades. En el mediano y largo plazo el objetivo del 4 proyecto es romper los paradigmas en los mismos que se han mantenido desde tanto tiempo y revolucionar su funcionamiento conforme a las herramientas existentes en la actualidad. El siguiente proyecto tiene como propuesta proveer una solución completa para los hogares y establecimientos comerciales en términos de adquisición de servicios prestados por personas independientes y con poca o nula regulación en el mercado actual. Es una propuesta que permite cambiar la logística y el modelo de negociación de mediante una herramienta virtual que adicionalmente brinde una respuesta más rápida y facilidad de uso.

lo scopo della presente tesi di laurea è stato quello di redigere un progetto per l’adeguamento funzionale della strada ubicata nel Parco Nazionale dell’ Asinara, tenendo quindi in particolare considerazione le caratteristiche ambientali del territorio, ma garantendo, allo stesso tempo, caratteristiche prestazionali migliorative e una maggiore sicurezza per il traffico veicolare.
