Oceanographic observations for the Mazatlan Project: October 1966 - August 1967

ENGLISH: To learn more about the early life of yellowfin tuna in their immediate environment, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission initiated a 2-year cooperative investigation with the Direccion General de Pesca e Industrias Conexas (DGP) of Mexico in August 1966. The project called for monthly cruises of about 5 days duration to be made in a triangular track between Mazatlan, Cape San Lucas and the Tres Marias Islands. Laboratory space for the field work was provided by the DGP in their biological station in Mazatlan and the research vessel Yolanda, property of the DGP, was made available for the monthly cruises. SPANISH: Con el fin de obtener un conocimiento mas avanzado sobre la vida temprana de estos atunes aleta amarilla, y del ambiente que los rodea, 1a Comision Interamericana del Atun Tropical inicio una investigacion colaborativa de 2 anos con la Direccion General de Pesca e Industrias Conexas (DGP) de Mexico, en agosto de 1966. El proyecto requirio cruceros mensuales de unos 5 dias de duracion para que fueran realizados en un rumbo triangular entre Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas y las Islas Tres Marias. La Direccion General de Pesca ofrecio amab1emente las facilidades del laboratorio para el trabajo experimental en la estacion biologica de Mazatlan, y e1 barco de investigacion Yolanda para los cruceros mensuales. The autobiographical project of Soveida Dosamantes in Face of an angel, by Denise Chávez

O objetivo desta dissertação é investigar o viés coletivo da autobiografia ficcional de Face of an angel, da escritora estadunidense e de origem mexicana Denise Chávez. Desse modo, o trabalho pretende discutir a sociedade chicana descrita sob a ótica da narradora/protagonista, Soveida Dosamantes, investigando desde o processo histórico de que é resultado, passando pela iniquidade entre os papéis desempenhados por homens e mulheres até chegar ao discurso autorreferencial com que a narradora/protagonista representa o ambiente cultural em que se insere. Antes da narrativa propriamente dita, há a árvore genealógica da narradora/protagonista, assinalando que o que vai se descortinar ao longo da leitura é uma saga de família. Assim, Soveida Dosamantes utiliza a sua ambiência doméstica, bem como a comunidade da fictícia cidade de Água Oscura, sua cidade natal, como recorte de uma estrutura social maior. Fazendo uso do discurso autobiográfico, a narradora/protagonista criada por Denise Chávez expõe as mazelas de uma comunidade que, em virtude ser produto do colonialismo e do neocolonialismo, perdeu sua identidade cultural. Em Face of an angel, através do relato em primeira pessoa de sua narradora/protagonista, a autora Denise Chávez reproduz o universo em que nasceu e cresceu. Cedendo a Soveida Dosamantes componentes autobiográficos como complicadas relações familiares, personagens femininas nativas que funcionam como sentinelas de práticas ancestrais que o domínio europeu apagou, personagens masculinos que mascaram sua fragilidade por trás de uma força e de um poder aparentes, Chávez representa em Face of an Angel o microcosmos de uma comunidade que vem, aos poucos, subvertendo o discurso oficial e conquistando o seu terreno no panorama político e social estadunidense

From drawing board to dining table: the success story of the GIFT project

As compared to crops and livestock, the genetic enhancement of fish is in its infancy. While significant progress has been achieved in the genetic improvement of temperate fish such as salmonids, no efforts were made until the late 1980s for the genetic improvement of tropical finfish, which account for about 90 percent of global aquaculture production. This paper traces the history of the Genetic Improvement of Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) project initiated in 1988 by the WorldFish Center and its partners for the development of methods for genetic enhancement of tropical finfish using Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) as a test species. It also describes the impacts of the project on the adoption of these methods for other species and the dissemination of improved breeds in several countries in Asia and the Pacific.

Engineering design and mechatronics: The schemebuilder project

The paper describes the development of a software design aid for use at the conceptual stage of engineering design. It is intended for use in the design of mechatronic products but has wider potential uses. Early approaches were based on function structures and tables of options and the system that evolved allows the assembly of schemes linked by matching their input and output ports. A database of components is provided which can be accessed via different indexes and the designer can easily create and compare alternative schemes at the concept stage. A bond graph approach is used to define the interconnections between components. This allows correct port matching but also provides for future development such as constraint propagation through the design and links to simulation tools. © 1993 Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Mainstreaming gender in the BOBLME Project

The paper presented a gender audit of international and regional instruments in the eight BOBLME countries. Uneven progress in tackling gender inequalities was found. Entry points to mainstream gender in the Strategic Action Plan(SAP) were identified and key recommendations to BOBLME partner countries were made.

General design of the CSR project in IMP

CSR, a new accelerator project under the construction. to upgrade the existing heavy ion cyclotron system in Lanzhou, is a double cooling-storage-ring system. It consists of a main ring and an experimental ring. The heavy ion beams from the cyclotron system will be accumulated and accelerated first in the main ring, then extracted to produce radioactive ion beams or high-Z beams, and finally to be send to the second ring for internal-target experiments.

Prototype of the Superferric Dipoles for the Super-FRS of the FAIR-Project

The FAIR China Group (FCG), consisting of the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP Lanzhou), the Institute of Plasma Physics (ASIPP, Hefei) and the Institute of Electric Engineering (IEE, Beijing) developed and manufactured in cooperation with GSI, Germany a prototype of a superferric dipole for the Super-Fragment-Separator of the FAIR-project [1]. The dipole magnets of the separator will have a deflection radius of 12.5 m, a field up to 1.6 T, a gap of at least 170 mm and an effective length of more than 2 meters to bend ion beams with a rigidity from 2 T . m up to 20 T . m. The magnets operate at DC mode. These requirements led to a superferric design with a yoke weight of more than 50 tons and a maximum stored energy of more than 400 kJ. The principles of yoke, coil and cryostat construction will be presented. We will also show first results of tests and measurements realized at ASIPP and at IMP.
