Between 2000/01 and 2006/07, the approval rate of a Thermodynamics course in a Mechanical Engineer graduation was 25%. However, a careful analysis of the results showed that 41% of the students chosen not to attend or dropped out, missing the final examination. Thus, a continuous assessment methodology was developed, whose purpose was to reduce drop out, motivating students to attend this course, believing that what was observed was due, not to the incapacity to pass, but to the anticipation of the inevitability of failure by the students. If, on one hand, motivation is defined as a broad construct pertaining to the conditions and processes that account for the arousal, direction, magnitude, and maintenance of effort, on the other hand, assessment is one of the most powerful tools to change the will that students have to learn, motivating them to learn in a quicker and permanent way. Some of the practices that were implemented, included: promoting learning goal orientation rather than performance goal orientation; cultivating intrinsic interest in the subject and put less emphasis on grades but make grading criteria explicit; emphasizing teaching approaches that encourage collaboration among students and cater for a range of teaching styles; explaining the reasons for, and the implications of, tests; providing feedback to students about their performance in a form that is non-egoinvolving and non-judgemental and helping students to interpret it; broadening the range of information used in assessing the attainment of individual students. The continuous assessment methodology developed was applied in 2007/08 and 2008/09, having found an increase in the approval from 25% to 55% (30%), accompanied by a decrease of the drop out from 41% to 23,5% (17,5%). Flunking with a numerical grade lowered from 34,4% to 22,0% (12,4%). The perception by the students of the continuous assessment relevance was evaluated with a questionnaire. 70% of the students that failed the course respond that, nevertheless, didn’t repent having done the continuous assessment.

Remote Laboratories are an emergent technological and pedagogical tool at all education levels, and their widespread use is an important part of their own improvement and evolution. This paper describes several issues encountered on laboratorial classes, on higher education courses, when using remote laboratories based on PXI systems, either using the VISIR system or an alternate in-house solution. Three main issues are presented and explained, all reported by teachers that gave support to students use of remote laboratories. The first issue deals with the need to allow students to select the actual place where an ammeter is to be inserted on electric circuits, even incorrectly, therefore emulating real world difficulties. The second one deals with problems with timing when several measurements are required at short intervals, as in the discharge cycle of a capacitor. And the last issue deals with the use of a multimeter in DC mode when reading AC values, a use that collides with the lab settings. All scenarios are presented and discussed including the solution found for each case. The conclusion derived from the described work is that the remote laboratories area is an expanding field, where practical use leads to improvement and evolution of the available solutions, requiring a strict cooperation and information sharing between all actors, i.e. developers, teachers and students.

A survey was done to determine the most common hospital accidents with biologically contaminated material among students at the Medical College of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Six hundred and ninety-four students (between fifth and twelfth semesters of the college course) answered the questionnaire individually. Three-hundred and forty-nine accidents were reported. The accident rate was found to be 33.9% in the third semester of the course, and increased over time, reaching 52.3% in the last semester. Sixty-three percent of the accidents were needlestick or sharp object injuries; 18.3% mucous membrane exposure; 16.6% were on the skin, and 1.7% were simultaneously on the skin and mucous membrane exposure. The contaminating substances were: blood (88.3%), vaginal secretion (1.7%), and others (9.1%). The parts of the body most frequently affected were: hands (67%), eyes (18.9%), mouth (1.7%), and others (6.3%). The procedures being performed when the accidents occurred were: suture (34.1%), applying anesthesia (16.6%), assisting surgery (8.9%), disposing of needles (8.6%), assisting delivery (6.3%), and others (25.9%). Forty-nine percent of those involved reported the accident to the accident control department. Of these 29.2% did not receive adequate medical assistance. Eight percent of those involved used antiretroviral drugs and of these 86% discontinued the treatment on receiving the Elisa method applied to the patient (HIV-negative); 6.4% discontinued the treatment due to its side-effects; and 16% completed the treatment.

Cell/cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) dynamic interactions appear to have a major role in regulating communication through soluble signaling, directing cell binding and activating substrates that participate in the highly organized wound healing process. Moreover, these interactions are also crucial for in vitro mimicking cutaneous physiology. Herein we explore cell sheet (CS) engineering to create cellular constructs formed by keratinocytes (hKC), fibroblasts (hDFB) and dermal microvascular endothelial cells (hDMEC), to target skin wound healing but also the in vitro recreation of relevant models. Taking advantage of temperature-responsive culture surfaces, which allow harvesting cultured cells as intact sheets along with the deposited native ECM, varied combinations of homotypic and heterotypic three-dimensional (3-D) CS-based constructs were developed. Constructs combining one CS of keratinocytes as an epidermis-like layer plus a vascularized dermis composed by hDFB and hDMECs were assembled as skin analogues for advancing in vitro testing. Simultaneously both hKC and hDMEC were shown to significantly contribute to the re-epithelialization of full-thickness mice skin wounds by promoting an early epithelial coverage, while hDMEC significantly lead to increased vessels density, incorporating the neovasculature. Thus, although determined by the cellular nature of the constructs, these outcomes demonstrated that CS engineering appear as an unique technology that open the possibility to create numerous combinations of 3D constructs to target defective wound healing as well as the construction of in vitro models to further mimic cutaneous functions crucial for drug screening and cosmetic testing assays.

O século XVIII Português foi, à semelhança do resto da Europa, fértil em alterações académicas, científicas e ideológicas. O desenvolvimento da ciência e da técnica, o surgimento das primeiras máquinas, impulsionou a área do saber, que atualmente chamamos de engenharia. Em Portugal (à época ainda um império do qual fazia parte, entre outros, o Brasil), as escolas técnicas e militares consolidam-se e surgem vários engenheiros e militares de renome cujas obras se difundem pelo reino. Manuel de Azevedo Fortes (1660-1749), engenheiro-mor do reino Português, publicou, em 1728 e 1729, os dois tomos de uma das suas obras maiores, O Engenheiro Português, obra dedicada à formação dos engenheiros na Academia Militar de Lisboa.. A primeira parte deste tratado aborda os conhecimentos matemáticos que Azevedo Fortes considera essenciais na formação dos engenheiros. Na sua Geometria Especulativa, um manuscrito datado de 1724, aborda os elementos de geometria e trigonometria, sem esquecer as suas aplicações. O Brigadeiro José Fernandes Pinto Alpoim (1700-1765), engenheiro que se destacou na arquitetura e fortificação do Brasil no século XVIII, publicou o Exame de Artilheiros em 1744 e Exame de Bombeiros em 1748, obras contendo os princípios da geometria e da trigonometria e as suas aplicações à engenharia militar que se destinavam ao ensino dos militares na Academia Militar do Rio de Janeiro, onde era professor. Nesta comunicação analisaremos a matemática, em particular a geometria, presente nestas obras, salientando não só os conteúdos abordados mas a ênfase dada às aplicações desses conteúdos nos contextos militares da época.

PURPOSE – Health and education are inextricably linked. Health promotion sits somewhat uncomfortably within schools, often remaining a marginal aspect of teachers’ work. The purpose of this paper is to examine the compatibility of an HP-initiative with teacher professional identity. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH – A qualitative research design was adopted consisting of semi-structured interviews. In total, 49 teachers in two school districts in the Auvergne region in central France were interviewed in depth post having completed three years’ involvement in a health promoting schools initiative called “Learning to Live Better Together” (“Apprendre a Mieux Vivre Ensemble”). FINDINGS – Teachers in the study had a broad conceptualisation of their role in health promotion. In keeping with international trends, there was more success at classroom than at whole school level. While generally teachers can be reluctant to engage with health promotion, the teachers in this study identified having little difficulty in understanding their professional identity as health promoters and identified strong compatibility with the HP-initiative. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS – Teachers generally viewed professional development in health promotion in a positive light when its underlying values were commensurate with their own and when the context was seen as compatible with the school mission. The promotion of health in schools needs to be sensitive to professional identity and be tailored specifically to blend more successfully with current teacher identity and practice. In the last few years, many reports have been describing promising biocompatible and biodegradable materials that can mimic in a certain extent the multidimensional hierarchical structure of bone, while are also capable of releasing bioactive agents or drugs in a controlled manner. Despite these great advances, new developments in the design and fabrication technologies are required to address the need to engineer suitable biomimetic materials in order tune cells functions, i.e. enhance cell-biomaterial interactions, and promote cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation ability. Scaffolds, hydrogels, fibres and composite materials are the most commonly used as biomimetics for bone tissue engineering. Dynamic systems such as bioreactors have also been attracting great deal of attention as it allows developing a wide range of novel in vitro strategies for the homogeneous coating of scaffolds and prosthesis with ceramics, and production of biomimetic constructs, prior its implantation in the body. Herein, it is overviewed the biomimetic strategies for bone tissue engineering, recent developments and future trends. Conventional and more recent processing methodologies are also described.

Secondary metabolites from plants are important sources of high-value chemicals, many of them being pharmacologically active. These metabolites are commonly isolated through inefficient extractions from natural biological sources and are often difficult to synthesize chemically. Therefore, their production using engineered organisms has lately attracted an increased attention. Curcuminoids, an example of such metabolites, are produced in Curcuma longa and exhibit anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activities. Herein we report the construction of an artificial biosynthetic pathway for the curcuminoids production in Escherichia coli. Different 4-coumaroyl-CoA ligases (4CL) and polyketide synthases (diketide-CoA synthase (DCS), curcumin synthase (CURS) and curcuminoid synthase) were tested. The highest curcumin production (70 mg/L) was obtained by feeding ferulic acid and with the Arabidopsis thaliana 4CL1 and C. longa DCS and CURS enzymes. Other curcuminoids (bisdemethoxy- and demethoxycurcumin) were also produced by feeding coumaric acid or a mixture of coumaric and ferulic acids, respectively. Curcuminoids, including curcumin, were also produced from tyrosine through the caffeic acid pathway. To produce caffeic acid, tyrosine ammonia lyase and 4-coumarate 3-hydroxylase were used. Caffeoyl-CoA O-methyltransferase was used to convert caffeoyl-CoA to feruloyl-CoA. This pathway represents an improvement of the curcuminoids heterologous production. The construction of this pathway in another model organism is being considered, as well as the introduction of alternative enzymes.
